“The secret to getting ahead is getting started” - Mark Twain
That quote has stuck with me my whole life
Ain't *that* the fuckin truth.
A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.
Jadon N
So in your "whole life" you are still "getting started"? You have not got very far then!
Thats true but need to remind ourselves everyday that - its not done until it done...
where do I start?
"Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see." The most beautiful quote of this video.
Superb. Such a beautiful quote.
Yah right 👍
Very beautiful, as it deserves
Good eye and even more important- thank you for your heart...
The one that spoke to me was “do something everyday that you don’t want to do: this is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain.”
Kinda caught in the throws of a few challenges in my life now, and this one shone a light a reason I’m having some difficulties. I love quotes from various wise people. Really enlightens me and keeps my mind focused on what really matters. Could you imagine what our culture would look like today if the average person did that instead of desperately seeking ‘likes’ on some emotionally charged platform
I'm really astounded the quotation ' It's better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool , rather than open it and remove all doubt ' has not been included ! That's in my top Mark Twain classics .
That quote is from the book of proverbs in the Bible. " It's better to keep your mouth shut one.
Absolutely!
This is my brother’s gambit.
It works👍
I don't get it, am I being stupid rn? ('-')
@@IdkWhatToMakeMyHandle-_- no You are not stupid. Read the book of proverbs in the Bible, there you’ll find the truth and best advice.
"Loyalty to country always! Loyalty to government when it deserves it." So true in today's world.
Loyalty to company always ! Loyalty to boss when he deserves it !
This quote, is the reason I believe I followed this group
"Honesty, the best of all the lost arts."

@@askformrs No. Company is loyal to ME. Because I'm very good doing my job. They don't want to lose employees like me.

My all-time favourite Mark Twain quote (not here): "Do not complain about growing old. It is a privilege denied to many."
Yeah, I like that too.
As an old man, I really appreciated this truism when I first heard it a couple of years ago.
That's how I feel. I think more about that when I'm called an old fu&ker
LIFE SEEMS TO BE JUST , JOUTH , FILLED WITH DREAMS AND ENERGY , SENIORITY : Sufficient experience and knowledge to avoid time-consuming uselessness
I get that and all, but “IT SUCKS.”
“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who can not read” very true.
"Reading is equivalent to thinking with someone else's head instead of with one's own"
Yes like if we're not moving forward, we are never stuck as we think , we are definitely degrading into the bottom 👍
Somalia will rise my brother
Cause people are unable to read can easily outsmart those that refuse to read. At least the former is willing to learn.
Where did this quote came from? That is very wise as well.
"The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." Beautiful!

A man who lives fully is ready to die surely. By Gerry Samsom😂
These weren't mentioned but my favorite Mark Twain quotes: 1) Go to Heaven for the climate, hell for the company 2) It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear to be stupid than to open it and remove all doubt 3) Politicians and diapers have one thing in common, they both need to be changed regularly and for the same reason.
Now you further make it difficult to choose the favorite quote! I gotta say, these three are awesome.
I was looking for the diapers and politician “that is one of my favorites and does it ever apply to today. Term limits God bless America God bless President Trump🙏🏻🇺🇸

I've heard your #2 as "...appear to be thought a fool, than to open it..." Great either way.
This one really struck me considering the current politics of the US “Loyalty to country always! Loyalty to government when it deserves it.”
Amen. How I wish we all understood to cherish the land we live on. Islam has a similar tenet, whereby it is not only your duty to defend for your family, but also the land you live in from enemies foreign and within.

Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.
Mark Twain
“I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, *but most of them never happened.”*
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.”
These two resonate with me today. I’m at point in my life where I’m ready for change, and one of those changes includes pushing off this self-doubt that’s kept me down for so long. But for another, it’s the uncertainty of what will happen that has now come to replace that weight. I’ve been told in the past that the things you fear the most never end up happening in the end, and the thoughts I’m having today have been the most frightening of all. I just want reassurance that it will remain true this time, as well.
You forgot his best quote, “if you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed, if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed”!
But "never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel."

Same happening in India Nowadays

Here is a great one not mentioned here, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness, and many of our people need it solely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” Mark Twain
That's a great one!

Having talked to teenagers about what they know, and what they have been taught in school, for about a quarter of a century, I see the truth of that quote.
I used to be shocked by what they were ignorant of, despite (because of?) doing hours of homework every night. Information that I took as basic knowledge, when I was a kid, is usually something that very few people, even in their 20s and early 30s, seem to know.

Twain must have known my father.
And, makes you laugh out loud, so you get two for one .
I’ll share with my loved ones, they are just stepping out into the world as young adults
Whom Can We Trust If No One Is Trustworthy?
One of my favorite quips from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is when Tom is defined as “a glittering hero…the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” and there were “some that believed that he would be President, yet, if he escaped hanging.” With these few words, Twain captured the essence of leadership in our world. Those who get to the top are the fiercest, most determined, and most ruthless. Today, the latter quality has become so intense that we can no longer believe our leaders, and certainly not trust them to have our best interest in mind.
I am not accusing any leader in particular, or even leaders as a whole. It is simply that in an egoistic world, where people vie to topple one another on their way to the top, the one at the top is clearly the one who trampled over and knocked down more people than anyone else. Concisely, to get to the top in an egoistic world you have to be the biggest egoist.
So how do we know whom to trust? We don’t know and we cannot know. All we know is that we are in the dark.
In a culture of unhinged selfishness, any conspiracy theory seems reasonable, while truth is nowhere to be found. When every person who says or writes something is trying to promote some hidden agenda, you have no way of knowing who is right, what really happened, or if anything happened at all.
The only way to get some clarity in the news and goodwill from our leaders is to say “Enough!” to our current system and build something entirely independent. The guiding principle of such a system should be “information only,” no commentary. Commentary means that information has already been skewed. Information means saying only what happened, as much as possible, not why, and not who is to blame and who we should praise.
Concurrently, we must begin a comprehensive process of self-teaching. We have to know not only what is happening, but why we skew and distort everything. In other words, we have to know about human nature and how it inherently presents matters according to its own subjective view, which caters to one’s own interest. To “clear” ourselves from that deformity, we must learn how to rise above our personal interest and develop an equally favorable attitude toward others. This is our only guarantee that our interpretation of things will be even and correct.
Once we achieve such an attitude, we will discover that the bad things we see in our world reflect our own, internal wickedness. Our ill-will toward others creates a world where ill-will governs, and so the world is filled with wickedness and cruelty. Therefore, all we need in order to create positive leadership-and to generally eliminate ill-will from the world-is to generate goodwill within us. When we nurture goodwill toward others, we will fill the world with goodwill. As a result, the world will fill with kindness and compassion. By changing ourselves, we will create a world that is opposite from the world we have created through our desires to govern, patronize, and often destroy other people.

When I was 14 years old I was surprised at how little my father knew about life. When I was 21 my father was dead :( It'll be 40 years ago in less than 3 months and now my mother had dementia and is unlikely to be here to mark his passing. And I'm so very sad.

I hope this helps in your time of need. I think your Mom did a good job of raising you! And now it's your turn to help her. 😃. I have been a very fortunate person all my life. Great minds and the utterances of great minds have enriched my soul. "The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read."....Mark Twain has convinced me to live to the fullest: " The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully, os prepared to die at any time." Thanks Mark Twain.
You missed my favorite"" A lie can travel half way around the world and back again before the truth gets it's boots on." At a time when the US is drowning in lies, this is an important one.
He didn’t write that quote lol

Happy and proud to see your comment dear ma’am 😊🙏..
This is a surprise. What are the chances
Is that your quote though :p
Nice to see you here. India is in need of the quote “ loyalty to country always, loyalty to government when it deserves it”. Always admired your achievements in life, especially as a women standing up for law & order.
From childhood have loved Twain's pearls of wisdom. One of my favorites is the two most important days of your life are the day you're born and the day you find out why.
Hello! Alice, how’re you doing?
"Don't argue with stupid people, they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience" I've used that one for YEARS, and most often recently in YT comment sections without ever knwoing where it came from. Thanks Samuel.
Couldn't pick a favourite...they're all spot on. Oul Twain was a wizard.
“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to there level and beat you with experience” M Twain. Couldn’t be more revenant today 100 years later! Sadly.
the word is relevant, not revenant. Couldn’t be more relevant today 100 years later! Sadly.
They will drag you down to THEIR level
@@Sydopath yeah i missed that one!

I really appreciate how genuinely funny this man was.
We sure could use a little Mark Twain wisdom these days .
Well, in 6 minutes and 44 Secs. I have learned more about how to deal with mankind than in a decade. Thanks for sharing these thoughts with us.
So sad
How can eating or not eating a live frog in the morning help dealing with mankind?
@@dannyleung2796 Eating a life frog stands for doing that, which you must, but truly dislike. A big task at hand, you'd rather avoid. Get it done and over with and enjoy the rest of the day, instead of run and hide from it, bearing the 'guilt' of not doing, what you know you ought to accomplish and thus NOT enjoying the day at all. It helps you deal with yourself.
Nice. Now bring the 3 most important ones in practice, and you've proven you learned something indeed.
The wisdom from this man lasts for every generation to come.
@No Lollygaggin. He already had his problems with prigs after he published " Huckleberry Finn." Now a new crop of prigs want to bowlderize the novel for offensive racial content.
My Grandmother was Grace Clemens and her Father, my Great Grandfather, was David Clemens. They were from the Missouri-Iowa area of Samuel Clemens. Our family history is filled with Mark Twain anecdotes and one of my Mother’s great aunts called him crazy Sam. I haven’t been able to trace the genealogy yet but this history was written by people not prone to hyperbole.
My favourite Twain quote has always been "I never let my schooling interfere with my education".
Ironically, that was on a plaque on the wall of one of my elementary school rooms.
One of my over-all favourite quotes comes from Groucho Marx
"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend.....
Inside of a dog it's too dark to read"
Equal measures of profundity, and silliness.
That one was printed, and hung on the workshop wall of the man I admired most in the world.
Well if you're inside a dog, he wasn't you best friend to eat you.
"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.
Small people always do that,
but the rally great make you feel that you, too, can become great."
People who bring out the best in you are always preferable to those that trigger the worst in you.
@@msjanegrey This is true but when you allow yourself to be provoked then you know yourself a little better👌
my favourite as well.
I have been in love with Mark Twain my whole life. All the qoutes are so simple yet so profound.
Hello Robin......
I'm using this medium to appreciate and thank you for your continuous prayers and support to me throughout my movie career, I'm Keanu reeves charlse, once again thank you where exactly are you from?
"I've been in love with Mark Twain my whole life..." Not yet
Wow, these are some of my new favorites. Truthful, logical, introspective.
When your friends say you look young, you know you are old! Mark Twain.
As a 79-year-old, I like the quote: "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. {One] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." As it happens, I am not afraid to die. Apparently the reason is that I was not afraid to live. Who knew?!?!
Bravo!!!
I'm 75, and when I realized where and what I was doing wrong, and corrected it as best I could, death took on a whole new meaning...the fear was gone.
The best quotes I liked are: 1. "Loyalty to country always! Loyalty to government when it deserves it." 2. "Honesty - the best of all the lost arts." 3. "If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything." Very astute in his observations. We need more like him around.
How do small people
Try to belittle your ambition that doesn't make sense.
@@larryandrews1515 yes it does if you think about it? when people are failing they want company, it's human nature for failures to want everyone else around them to fail too, that is really what racism is all about, it has nothing to do with color, it has everything to do with Jealousy, when poor whites are struggling and they see Blacks/Asians/Hispanics etc working hard and getting ahead in "their" country they start to hate them, but they can't say I hate them because they are better than me or because they are not lazy and stupid like me, can they? so they say they are getting ahead because they are getting some benefit from the Government that I ain't getting, and that is their reasoning for hating them, and then the hate is passed down through generations, that is simplifying it but that is basic Human nature....whereas successful people are less likely to belittle you, at least not until you reach their level and start to pass them, I hope that explains what Samuel Langhorne Clemens meant when he made that quote
The human race has only one weapon that is laughter. And A man who lives life fully prepared to die anytime
It is very much true
Great quotes, very intelligent man who knows people and the experiences of life ! I wish we had world leaders like him!
I love them all
When two people argue nobody wins
When a person behaved s vindictively towards another he showed. No respect for himself
Twain is a favourite of mine and it’s hard to single out which of the quotes is best, for I have lived many of them
"Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see."
Marlo Maher, Agreed......
i like that one best.
Hi Marlo, it’s nice meeting you here.. I’m Richard by name, it would be nice getting to know you better, if that’s ok with you? My mom once said good friends are never too much to have. if you don’t mind, can we be friends??
Lovely smile you got there on your profile picture, it can brighten up the most darkest atmosphere of any man’s world😉.
Ditto for the kindness one.
Even animals and insects can sense kindness.
I can't go through this without crying like a little girl...
The wisest man in history!
My hero!
In my opinion, he and William James were the finest intellectuals of their time.
"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great"
"A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds."
My Favorite quote.
"Do something everyday that you don't want to do;this is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain."
- or learn to bear your lifelong 'pain' ! ...
His wisdom is timeless.
For those reading this right now, remember, you cannot get well in the same environment that made you ill. Hope this helps you today.
I do agree with that to an extent but a certain measure of accountability must also be assessed. In many cases, the environment itself plays no part in the manifestation of many illnesses especially when the state of one's environment is directly within the realm of things that can be controlled.
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.Small people always do that but the really great people make you feel that you too can become great.”

The one about forgiveness is powerful!
"A Banker is the fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain." How absophakalutingly true!
That was also my favourite, as well as the one where man will do everything to be envied.
Actually prime purpose of umbrella is to cover from sun light. Umbrella comes from Latin "umbra" meaning shadow. Italian "parasole" means sun shelter. Just sayin 😉
@@nieczerwony I believe Mr. Twain (actually Mr. Clemens) was noting the tendency of bankers to be so called fair weather friends!

I love this one:Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it. All of them are truly inspiring.
Strange but not many (if any) selected this, and this too was inspiring. I think one has had to have suffered greatly to understand this quote. Most folk don't go through that type of suffering and rejection. That quote sang to me like a beautiful song.
That quote caused ripples on my soul/heart.
