"Beaten to death with words" is probably another accurate description to Danganronpa.
Zelda: Words are evading me
Arin (and me, for that matter): I fucking wish
On one hand, Danganronpa’s tutorials are pretty wordy for fairly simple concepts. But it’s pretty hilarious that Arin’s tutorial tolerance is only like three sentences of text.
I feel like that’s what V3 did better with its tutorials. At least that game gave you images as a point of reference. Basically the best tutorials for Arin are like the new Mario party pre mini game explanations.
I agree. I think what they should've done is just introduce the game in small steps, or make it so the first time you're doing it, there's no real penalty for making a mistake.
Resulting in total incomprehension.
"Argh, I'll figure it out as I go along"
"Oh...uh..what the fuck?"
Three sentences? That tutorial was absurdly long, I almost expected the bit to be that the tutorial just goes on for 2 mins even when skipping it all 😆
Arin's "that sentence was named Franklin" comment really hit it on the head. Danganronpa tutorials read like explanations that I wrote when I made DIY board games in elementary school and was so excited by the fact that I made a game and came up with all this stuff that I didn't care to think about if other people would actually enjoy, understand or care for it.
"Improved" Hangman's Gambit should just be Wheel of Fortune's winner game, where they give you R, S, T, L, N and E, and you have to figure out the rest.
Still reading that as R. L. Stine to this day
"Beaten to death with words" is the perfect way to describe that experience
"beaten to death with words" is probably the most accurate description of these minigames.
The second any kind of instruction or tutorial comes up, Arin Hanson dies inside. Every. Single. Time.
ADHD king, hahahaha
Did you not see that tutorial? It was like a full on instruction manual for a chess game. There was way too many mechanics explained before they even got to the game.
It doesn’t help when they’re understandably too full of just words.
Especially when they introduce new concepts with only words.
Tbh same
This is an absolute perfect description of all of Danganronpa
Dangan explains everything like it's quantum physics.
Didn’t you get the 500 page Danganmanual that comes with your purchase of the game?
Anime exposition is some of the dumbest shit in fiction.
Wait! Let's go over this one more time!
Danganronpa has the flaw of not showing but telling. Even if you want to be clear don't just throw 5000 words at someone expecting them to remember everything, explain it with visuals from the minigame or on-screen tips during your first round. It's pretty basic game design.
Agreed. Every time in a game it gives me a lengthy tutorial even if I read it thoroughly it has no meaning until I acually play it.
Like I rage quit at the beginning of FF7R because it tells you a lot of info about necessary battle mechanics like バースト...burst? What is this called in English? Break zone? Iunno but its naming a mechanic before I use the mechanic. Later after looking up its actual relevance I had a blast with the game but I beat Nier Automata in like a week while I was mad at FF7R because that opening tutorial is the best I've ever seen in a game (the tutorial is integrated into the storytelling so your learning feels impactful)
In contrast Botw teaches me what an item does in like 3 sentences or less and then I have a space to practice.
Good game design: 3 sentences or less, space for practice, space for challenge, extra points for space for creativity (also these are basic tenants of learning. Look at any textbook it does the same thing. If it doesn't then you can feel the difficulty curve).
(darn it I can never leave short replies...)
Yeah, I learned pretty quickly that for the class trial minigames, it was way more effective and less confusing to just skip the tutorial text and figure out what I had to do myself. They're nowhere near as complicated as the text leads you to think they are.
Yeah, ngl nowadays I'm kinda starting to feel for Arin. Life is short and complicated and I can't process a paragraph of instructions with needing at least a quick graphic or visual to get a sense of what I'll be looking at. I fare much better at going in hands-on, and peeking at the tutorial/instructions if I need assistance.
Hey, it's my suggestion! Such a great moment, thanks for clipping it!
It’s Game grumps hell, *Reading*
Honestly after just playing that part of DR2 for myself, I am not judging Arin at all for that reaction.
Arin _"Maybe if I don't read the instructions I'll be _*_less_*_ confused"_ Hansen, ladies and gentlemen.
If they don't come back it's okay, these class trials are brutally long for no reason
Agreed. "I was the killer. I did it. Just kidding I'm lying!"
The trials are literally the game. That's like saying Trivial Pursuit is bad because there are too many questions.
Without the trials everyone would just say "This isn't a game, it's just a book!"
@@RuNoMai to be fair, I think the games suck. They only only redeemed by the grumps being funny, but I would never ever ever play one myself because I hate the trials and the "logic" behind them
I can see that they are not enjoying this game as much as we wanted, so it's ok if they want to quit it. Love em to see it through, but i can understand if they decide not to continue it
When did they say they weren't going to play it anymore? They're most likely still using up the back catalog they recorded before they went on holiday break, I bet you Danganronpa will be back within a week
@@w00tyd00d Yeah, they made a community post explaining the game would be back in Jan - I'm guessing Monday the third?
Yeah, Arin has specifically said that if the characters weren't fun and the writing stupid funny, he would hate Danganronpa so much.
@@Flitter9 That tracks, he doesn't have a lot of love for plot-focused games, and DR doesn't feature much actual gameplay
OH GOD DAMNIT!!! I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE SPOILER FREE! NOT MY BABY BOI BYAKUYA!!! WHO'S GOING TO EAT DONUTS AND DISCUSS THE DEEP STATE NOW!? XD
lol
You can tell Dan said the title
"just read the tutorial"
Ah yes, the best content for a comedy show: reading needlessly complex tutorials
I’ll have to side with Arin on this one.
Danganronpa’s tutorials use an unreasonably large amount of text for what they’re trying to convey.
It feels less like learning the mechanics at that point, and more like reading the Terms & Conditions
@@spugnoxngubcux9801 Plus the Danganronpa tutorials constantly throw random, contextless terms that just don't mean anything without visuals. Not to mention making the tutorial a character, so instead of just getting information you also have to deal with it having a personality.
I wonder if Arin’s ADHD has anything to with his low tolerance for tutorials
it does 100 percent. as someone who also has ADHD the flow of dopamine as I play a game IMMEDIATELY dies if there’s a wall of text to read. there’s a recurring meme on r/ADHDmeme of “what ADHD is”, in a pie chart listing several detailed symptoms, and then in the next panel of “what ADHD actually is” the chart is simply one color and reads “you immediately skipped reading the above because it was too long”. Not to mention how much harder it is in general for people to learn something solely from a description versus just trying it out yourself. I would say most people better pick up board and card games this way.
But can you spell BEATEN?
*insert Hangman's Gambit here for the word BEATEN*
IN THIS FUN MINIGAME?!
I really hope they finish DR2, the first case was so stupid, and it only gets _stupider_
but like, in a cool way
The game greatly improves after the first trial imo. It's my favorite game and character cast ever
That’s good to hear because this first trial s u c k e d
@@soJ2 every first trial is kinda bland besides v3 😅 they'll get to go to a new island after each trial and the murders get more and more mysterious so they get pretty interesting :)
shit man, if a series isn't done I don't think there should be grump out clips yet.
Like I'm taking my time to watch the series and let some episodes stack up because theres long periods of time where they don't upload Danganronpa eps.
And I got totally spoiled about the first death :/
Now I don't know if I should stay subbed because I don't want that shit to happen again.
John Cena Approved
The perfect illustration for how these games are boring and interminable to watch: It’s nothing but reading endless droning text.
Ngl nowadays I'm kinda starting to feel for Arin. Life is short and complicated and my anxiety-filled monke brain can't process a paragraph of instructions without at least a quick visual to get a sense of what I'll be looking at. I fare much better at going in hands-on, and peeking at the tutorial/instructions if I need assistance.
There's no way Arin will make it through he doesn't have what it takes
Day 76 of honouring The Only Thijs and continuing to wait for "does Bruno Mars is gay?
i can understand how it can be extremely frustrating when they do things like this. and completely miss out on understanding what is going on. because this one felt very obvious to me what happened and i never played it. but moments like thes are still worth all the complaining and ignorance to me.
I didn't understand a damn thing.
