This game just won “Best Family Game” at the Game Awards
It forces a family together, how can it not be the best??
Maybe the "Best Dysfunctional Family Game" award.
Indeed, because it's an amazing game with realistically selfish parents. The game doesn't pull punches, which is refreshing in a game like this.
No! OMG is that true? After playing this game I felt like they were a terrible family. The parents were bad and I didnt even really care about the kid in the end. It just seemed more like they just decided to stay together so that their kid wouldnt be sad, eventhough it seemed like they would be a lot happier if they werent together anymore. It honestly made me think that that little girl is just selfish and almost as fucked up as her parents.
@@briantalbert6290 I can understand it winning for its gameplay but yeah, to call it the best “family” game, when the subject matter isn’t exactly something I’d wanna subject my kids to seemed bizarre to me
This scene basically made concrete the feeling of despising these two as characters and even more as parents. The way they've been written has not made them likeable in any way.
They're just written very real and very human because they're enormously flawed
@@senatorsparky In this scene they're written about as deeply and compellingly as a GI Joe villain kicking a puppy.
I mean, it's a stuffed animal.. and their daughter is currently unsupervised in their house. I'd tear apart a real baby elephant with my bare hands in front of its mother if my kid needed me and I wasn't there.
If you were transformed into a doll and thought that the only way to not be stuck like that for forever was to rip apart one of your kid’s toys, would you hesitate for even a moment? I know which option I would go for, but maybe being a doll is a better choice for some.
@@KairuHakubi But NOBODY TOLD THEM THAT'D BREAK THE SPELL! They just came up with the idea out of nowhere, based on nothing. Hell, if they used any critical thinking it'd be obvious that it WOULDN'T work, because the magic book and every single character just kept telling them over and over "you need to learn to respect eachother and make your daughter happy". Instead of guessing "ok lets prove to the book we can do that", they jump to "mAYbe mAkiNg hER cRr wiLL BrEAk tHe sPeLL!"
It's astounding to me how mean-spirited the entire narrative of this game is so far, most especially in this scene.
That has been the point of the game up to this point: showing that the parents at no point have considered what effect their divorce has had on their daughter. It's cruel, but effective.
@@kamikazesopp Nah its repetetive. It was crystal clear that they were crappy parents (and just crappy people) from the beginning, painting it as being the divorce is a weird choice because couples that don't love each other *should* get divorced. Its much worse for kids to have to grow up in a dysfunctional household with parents that disrespect each other and fight all the time. Divorcing also teaches the kids not to settle for someone that doesn't treat them right.
Sometimes there's nothing you can do to make a relationship work, and you can't force yourself to love somebody. Just trying hard isn't always enough.
@@TheGrumbliestPuppy Did we play different games? This game does in no way advocate for maintaining a toxic relationship. The parents' problem is that they never talked about their problems with each other, and just charged ahead on their own. They turned dysfunctional because of this self-centered attitude because they were indeed trying their best.
Divorce is always tough on kids. While it's true that one shouldn't settle for something bad, what they have here isn't bad. They're just turning it bad because of the lack of empathy they've developed over time (which again, comes back to not communicating or cooperating). Shit, even the daughter does exactly something alomg the lines of what they've been doing at the end of the game!
This game is about two people rediscovering who they are and why they love each other, and about actually trying to fix a relationship instead of abandoning it. It doesn't sugarcoat it, and keeps it pretty real. Do I like the main characters as people? No. Do I like them as characters? Yes. Because they feel like actual people you could meet, not some weird abstraction like the dad in Fallout 3.
@@kamikazesopp Oh no, I understand perfectly what they were going for. They just failed because they're awful, toxic people like @Grumbles said, and have not up to this point made any unselfish attempt to communicate or rediscover their original relationship. They piss and moan and blame each other every step of the way and think that one more instance of their daughter being unhappy is a fair sacrifice for each of them respectively getting what they want. Their actions don't match the themes, and this scene cemented that I don't care what happens to them. Just because it pulls no punches doesn't mean it works.
@@OCyrus1989 Yeah, that about sums up what the game has buildt them up as at this point in the game. Breaking the elephant is the point where the game starts turning around, and they start improving as characters. I guess I can't blame anyone too harshly for writing the game off if they stopped at this point, but they miss out on the second half of the game, which anybody empathetic enough to get upset by toy-murder would most likely love.
This still hurts to watch. But for anyone wondering in the end credits there's a picture of cutie all fixed up
That makes me very happy.
Thank you, cause this was awful.
You can tell after this part is where they became disinterested in this series. I still don’t know if they’ll continue because there’s still more where they left off.
This game feels like it just got repetitive after the squirrel bit. I think they'll finish it, just because the co-op banter and support is strong enough to get over the last hurdles.
@@FireFarmer123 it's a WEIRD pace, especially after their previous game. At no point do you have ANY idea how much is left.
@@KairuHakubi ya had that feeling as well when i got to the last part it didn’t have a boss so made me even more confused
@@KairuHakubi agreed
@@FireFarmer123 I dunno, the main characters (and book of love) are so unbearable and the story is so bland that I lost interest at around the same place. I'd always rather they don't finish games that they don't like.
we're ALL going to need therapy after this
This was also my thougts playing this game... I *HATED* that scene...
My brother and I had the EXACT reactions. We felt so bad we sorta didnt want to continue
The more they started feeling bad, the more I started laughing, idk why 😂😂
In the movie Inside, her imaginary friend self sacrifices but in this it's straight up murder
It's amazing how disturbing this is, the devs really drag it out.
Ha, jokes on you, I already need therapy.
*cries in the corner*
omg that poor elephant.
**WHY WOULD YOU MAKE ME RELIVE THIS SHIT!??!?!**
It’s still hilarious how Dan spoils DDLC at every opportunity possible.
The game left an impact on him, 'nuff said. The game is also a couple of years old now, so anyone likely to play it probably has.
I hope they continue this
A sad reminder that they'll never go back to this series (which gets far less grim and more fulfilling as it continues)
... man, *FUCK* this game!!
If you'd seen what came later, that fuck might not have been so strong.
Not only was Cutie the literal “Elephant in the Room” at the breakfast table, I’ve always suspected that the devs gave her that name because it sounds like QTE.
💚😉😉💚
Well, I hadn't seen this, and now, now I am filled with regret.
Cool! I wish I never saw this. Hurting an innocent being who only wants friendship...I feel a sourness in my soul.
this is also the game i believe that ultimately suggests it's better for two parents who clearly are not good together to just stay together anyways "for their kid" which is the opposite of what's healthy
Yeah, the ”make the parents get back together" trope really pisses me off.
Really, the game actually ends like that?! I believed it would conclude with the parents still divorcing, but realizing that the well-being of their kid is important, so they make sure to make the divorce as amicable as possible and make sure the kid has access to both parents at any time.
Now I'm really glad I stopped watching this game. Holy fuck that's awful.
I assume they actually manage to settle the problems that are present in their relationship rather than staying together but not fixing anything. There really isn’t anything wrong with the former, because it’s no different than any other form of relationship being repaired after a time of stress.
@@imveryangryitsnotbutter End of game spoilers below
Yeah, i looked it up, the game ends with the parents dancing together and then kissing to break the spell. I expected a little more from the makers of A Way Out tbh.
More like parents who don't get along should work out their differences and develop a better relationship for the sake of their child, which is healthy, but too many parents split up instead and shuttle their kids between them.
Arin: “I hate hurting cute things”
And yet you still went through with it, you sick bastards 🥺🥺🥺
That's like saying someone is a sick bastard for watching a movie where mean-spirited things happen. What's the point of blaming the audience for sitting through it when the developer spent WEEKS making this shit as disturbing as possible?
@@PangolinMontanari no, there’s a difference in doing said thing and watching someone who does it.
Sad times😅
I recently saw this episode, their reactions made me laugh
Why would I want to watch this moment a second time?
Honestly, I was just waiting for them to reach this point
They can abandon it now that they are traumatized
I mean, it would be a bit like dropping DDLC after the first death.
Agreed. 😌 Cutie, the mole level, and the clock/time level were three of the only things I liked in this game.
@kamikazesopp true but i mean, they didn’t seem so energetic to play this in the first place since they left it for a month or 2 alone, came back n will probably do the same
This game is great, despite the very questionable parental choices made by the “adults” but sometimes they don’t feel pulled into the story as much as we are
@@darconious524 You are right I think. At this point there is little hope of the two of them getting any enjoyment out of the story, which is a shame. Doubly frustrating that they stopped at this of all points, so they're not likely to even remember the game positively.
Do I even wanna know the context of this?! I doubt it would make it any better.
Due to a magical mishap, the girl's parents got their souls trapped into voodoo dolls. A supposedly helpful spirit told these two that if they make their daughter cry, it'll break the spell and return them to normal.
The context really doesn't make it any better though. The parents are treating their own child purely as a means to an end.
@@imveryangryitsnotbutter The "spirit" never said so, it just didn't stop them. It was the dad's idea. It's probably an allegory for how little they have considered their daughters feelings when they decided to divorce.
game of the year
right here
The media form that is video games; a summary.
oh right they havent finished this game yet.
I love hurting cute things!
I AM NOT OKAY
Yeah, I think we ALL need therapy
This game beat Psychonauts 2 out for Game of the Year, btw
I love this game, but that is an actual crime if true.
🌚I feel like mr incredible phase 5
This was the whole reason I wanted them to play this game
this was the scene i heard of that convinced me i would never watch, play or read anything about this game
and i was right
I mean, if all you knew about GTA 5 is that you at one point play as a crazed drug-addict and have to graphically torture someone as part of the story, you'd have a pretty skewed view of that game, too.
My mom was wondering if she should get this game for me and my sister... I'm not so sure if I want to play it after seeing this...
The game is awesome. It's an entire journey about fixing a relationship broken by presumptions and neglect. There is, quite litterally, no game like it.
This was made by the same guy who made A Way Out and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Both good games, but MAN, Josef Fares seems to insist on making us feel terrible.
SPOILER ALERT
In Brothers, the older boy dies and you are forced to make the little brother drag his brother’s corpse into an grave and THEN push four piles of dirt on top.
In A Way Out, you’re forced to kill either Leo or Vincent, with no middle ground. And then feel terrible as you watch their significant others mourn for them.
I think he's the one basking in the child's tears, lol!
After this episode I hated this playthrough. I wanted to play this game before I saw this scene... but this was just brutal and like... unnecessarily drawn out :,(
You should still play this. This is the halfway-point, and is as dark and brutal as the game ever gets. The rest of the game is a lot more positve and sees the characters develop into much less dysfunctional people.
@@kamikazesopp idk it just made me so sad and made me hate the parents
@@zeldayraita9515 Well, that's kinda what you're expected to do at this point. They get a lot better in the second half of the game as they get less self-centered.
@@kamikazesopp it just made me too upset to pursue playing it
The game gets better after this
As soon as I saw the title I already knew what this was from. I can't believe they done this! How could you game! Such a fucked up sequence! My best friend and I are playing this game and we are getting to this point and I'm like I don't know if we can do this
Don't worry: it get's better. Stuffed toys also have the benefit of being fixable.
@@kamikazesopp Oh great! I'm glad to hear it gets better! :) we made it through this section tonight and I'm still recovering from it lol
lol
The most atrocious part is the fact she's wearing shoes in bed
Me after watching the Grumps play this:😢
WHY WOULD YOU CLIP THIS I NEVER WANNA SEE THIS AGAIN
I said it before and I'll say it again. These characters make Endeavor from My hero academia look like Ward Cleaver.
I mean, Endeavor also realizes he's been a horrible parent after a while.
Jebus. Now I really don't want to play this game
The fact that this won game of the year as well
Where is the rest of your sentence?
@@ZeppelinNL The fact that you think a sentence fragment isn't good enough for communication
It’s this part of the game and the parents ignorant drive to make their child cry that keeps me from wanting to play the game with anyone.
It’s just not okay to me.
Not me crying over a stuffed animal ( Who doesn't deserve it.) getting ripped apart like paper. I had to look away. What kind of sick bastard does that? I am very upset.
We've hit the first grump out clip I refuse to watch.
I can't hit Like on this video out of principle.
Y'know the worst part? The game designers think this is funny.
Highly doubt it
I legitimately believe this scene alone should've deprived this game of "Game of the Year."
Why? It very neatly summarizes how selfish and self-centered the parents have been leading up to deciding on getting divorced. Is ripping apart a stuffed toy that can be easily fixed more upsetting than shooting a stranger in litterally any videogame?
@@kamikazesopp eh, you call it "neat," i call it patronizing on top of needlessly disturbing. shock value does not improve an already heavy-handed metaphor, for me personally.
@@littlefoxglove276 To clarify, I meant "neat" as in "small and compact", not as in "cool". I was definitely uncomfortable when I played through it, but I think it served as a good moral low-point for the story overall. I agree they took it a bit further than necessary (especially the part where the ear gets torn off), but I'd find the game lesser without it.
John Cena Approved
I didn't like this part of the game legit sadness
this actually is hard to watch

I genuinely hate the protagonists in this game. Not just for this scene either. They’re just terrible.
I think this scene is hilarious. I especially enjoy when people overreact to it and get all emotional. Maybe I’m just a soulless husk, but I can certainly find the dark humor in this ridiculous situation.
How freaking DARE you make this into a clip, this is AWFUL
I forget how many kids watch this show. The amount of people genuinely distraught by this is astounding.
This year, besides all the other years, I lost 2 aunts (in the last 10 days), my 6 1/2 years girlfriend, my heart health, my knee (while my entire body health is fucked up for over a decade), and I can't even count what else. But yeah, everyone else complain about some lost biscuit or whatever.
How terrible. Let me play a song for you on the world's smallest violin. 🎶🤏😑
Losing loved ones is hard… but not sure what this comment is. I just saw a one minute clip of a game grumps video, now I got some random guy going on about “you shouldn’t complain because my life sucks” business. My beloved cat Angel died today and my grandma has stage 4 cancer. you’re not hearing me going crazy. People are allowed to think however they want about a UA-cam video. Typing this all out it still bewilders me that you just made a long list of things that suck for you and then said stop complaining 👍 thumbs up
I'm so sorry for your losses, jeez. And I thought I was having a bad year.
Yeah I feel like people spend all their empathy on fiction and then don't have any left for reality, and it frustrates me.
the sadist in me liked this scene
