Thank God for this guy. He points out that God's sovereignty reigns past the troubles of the world. I also appreciate how he stands by the truth and is so humbly honest about his own struggles with faith.

I like Philip Yancey. His books keep me constant 'in season and out of season.' Everything he says always projects towards God. The approach he makes is very practical and God-centered. May God bless him more and more.

Yancey makes me think about the way I think in my approach to how I read the Bible, my personal faith in God and they way I view the evangelical church. His brutal honesty is what sets him above many other writers of the faith. His courage and willingness to deal with difficult and complex issues makes him my favorite writer. His books have sustained me through difficult times. I am sure that God delights when we approach Him in frank honesty and candor. Thank you Philip.

God planted the notion of good and evil in all of us. That is why we recognize caring as a good thing.

It sure sounds dramatic, but books like The Jesus I never knew, Disappointment with God, How my faith survived the church and most of all What's so amazing about grace are the reason I'm still a believer.
Unlike many christian authors Yancey writes from a journalist perspective, a journalist who is honest in his doubts and criticism. I think he really has something to say to christians as well as non-believers.

It's not a double bind, it's a paradox. He's saying a relationship with Christ pushes you to be a better person and to care about things outside yourself. Good people care because of the present state of their heart/mind. It is not a completely static situation that cannot be changed.

There's definitely people who call Philip Yancey a heretic but as the same sort of people said the same things about Jesus, he's in good company.

Just one question here then. Just imagine I wanted to become a christian. Do I need to believe the bible is a real story?

Does phillip yancey have any connection with the Jewish community? Is his bloodline origin is hebrew?

No I don't. You are attacking a philosophy that teaches compassion, love and understanding. A philosophy that is the ground for human rights as described by the UN. A philosophy that encourages the strive to understand our world, that is the basis for scientific research. I don't expect you to understand but I hope you will one day.

    Romans 10:9
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
    Thats it.

"There are a lot of things I wish I didn't have to care about. I wish I didn't have to care about global property. I wish I didn't have to care about racism..."
This is the problem with Christianity. Yancey is openly saying he would rather not care about these things and be much happier if he didn't have to. The only way he can supposedly care about these things is by the decree of an all mighty God.
But everyone knows you can't make someone care. That's a double bind. Good people just care

Look again if your theology does not include the judgement of God on sinful people.

I know what I'm doing is unproductive, but your way of thinking is so blind and dangerous it's enraging. But I don't expect you to understand.
