- After four seasons of riding my 2017 Santa Cruz Hightower has treated me well. My talent certainly hasn't exceeded the capabilities of this bike yet. In this video, I talk about what has changed on the bike since the last bike check and what maintenance I've done since new.

Nice bike and some thoughtful upgrades. You can't go wrong with Santa Cruz
The lifetime frame warranty and lifetime bearings is a big plus too!
Love my HT. Great bike
Nice recap. I love the editing of the falls leading to new parts or cutting down the handlebars. I am currently running 730. That feels really big to me. I cant imagine 780 or even 770. Nice riding. Keep safe!
I was wary of the 780mm at first but I found it workable. 770 or 760 is probably closer to what I really need them to be.
I’m still very much in love with my 2017 OGHT. I ditched the Sram Guides in favor of some Shimano XTs. I also replaced the reverb with a PNW dropper. Fox FloatX out back and the OG Rct3 Pike up front at 150mm. It’s been up and down the east coast out to Wyoming and like you, I’m gonna run it until it won’t go any further. It’s a great bike.
Awesome! I'm still running the RCT3 Pike too. I'm considering changing it from 140 to 150 but I'm concentrating on the singlespeed right now. The Guide RSCs have never given me trouble. I get them professionally bled about every 1.5 years. That Reverb was the first major change.
How do you think it feels with 150mm vs the original 140? I've been thinking about doing that to my 2017 HT? Thanks!
Great walk through!! I’ve always wondered about the Rekons
Fast and light, but sub par for loose trail surfaces IMO.
Hey! I see you at Palos once in a while. I too have a v1 Hightower running topaz and oval. Def hate this dropper and need to try to rekons to keep up with all the xc folks. Thanks for the bike check.
Question: what are you running in the topaz for pressure (can/bladder) and spacers. I noticed I’m always at the end of the fun o meter even a few min into my rides. I’m about 160lb and run one spacer in positive with about 190 and 180 can/bladder. My new project. Just put another spacer in positive today. I feel DVO suggestions for sag just aren’t playing well with vpp/HT for whatever reason. I also have a lot of bob, so considering one in the negative. Coming off a broken hand, I’d like to keep it a little plush, though.
Also curious on your fork set up with spacers.
I'm running one volume spacer in the negative chamber. Pressure at 205 psi. Bladdar at 180-185ish. I'm about 185-190 lbs. Most rides I'm pushing the o-ring off the end of the shock shaft so I think I need to increase the pressure/reduce sag. No bob when climbing. Call out to me next time you see me at Palos and we can chat!
What! You've replaced the pivot bearings three times but the brake pads only once in four years? I recently replaced my rear pads after 600 miles and 6 months of riding.
Yea, not much elevation here in the 2nd flattest state. 🤷♂️
Hi, nice bike have same, the DVO is 200x50?
Yes! But I think it’s actually 200x51 per the DVO specs. Close enough. 😂
How do you feel that the Rekon’s do on IL trails? My bike came with a set of Vee tires that feel pretty overkill. Was looking at them or the Ardents.
Rekons are great for IL trails - specifically hardpack like Palos and Raceway. They only do OK in loose soil or rocky trail surfaces.
Nice! Thinking of buying a used 2017 CC frame for $1,200 with no warranty. Is it a good buy?
What's the inner width of your rims?
Thanks
29mm
See if the current owner is willing to work with you on getting replacement bearings and maybe even warranty frame if the worst happens. FYI, I’ve found the upper link bearings by the shock seems to seize first.
Oh, I’m not sure if that’s a good price or not. Thanks for watching!
Still have this bike in 2023?
I do! Suspension and brakes were just serviced for 2023 season. I didn’t ride it too much at the beginning of 2022 since I was riding two races with the singlespeed and I put a lot of hours into riding that bike.
@@TheMediocreMountainBiker Great! I'm looking at a 2017 just like yours -considering buying it vs buying a brand new bike for twice the $$$....
@@bri2233 The V1 is a great bike. If you do get one, the DVO Topaz is vastly superior to the stock RS Monarch.
