I am 75 and grew up with dogs and have had them ever since. For many years, I had more than one at a time.I lost my husband 3 years ago, and thank God I still had the little terrier mix that he had picked out at the Humane Society shelter. I have no family and cannot imagine what I would have done without Holly. She is such a perfect match for me, and so smart. I get up at 7 am to let her out to go, in the fenced in back yard, and then we run back to bed to snuggle and get a couple more hours sleep. Don't know what I'd do without her. I live in New England, so if it snows, I do need to go out and shovel an area for her, but that comes with the territory. I have the same as you, in that she does shed, is mostly white, and I wear a lot of dark colors. The sticky tape roller is always at the ready. LOL. There is nothing like a dog. Unconditional love, that goes both ways.

I can't imagine my life at age 68 without my two little dogs. I've always had dogs throughout my whole life. My two little dogs sleep on the bed next to me, as I live alone and am retired, and they are snugglers. I love the mornings when I wake up and there they are all snuggled next to me. Mine are shedders too, but that's ok, they're worth everything. And yes, the roller tape is part of my life. LOL! I will run my life around my dogs because they are there for me every day, all the time, no matter what's going on, when I'm sick, etc. unlike any human.

@@nigella4me I totally agree! Mine doesn't usually sleep on the bed at night, unless it's summer time and the window is open, and she hears or smells some little animal outside. Then she gets scared and runs up and snuggles with me all night. LOL. I actually leave the window open, hoping that will happen. But she does come to bed with me in the morning after being let out. At night she likes her little bed, which is on a small hope chest at the foot of the bed. It's a big feather pillow, who wouldn't like it? What kind of dogs do you have? Mine is a 15 lb. mixed terrier.

You are such a sweetheart to make this video, I’ve never seen anyone talk about this. We just turned 70 and have been married 38 years and have always had a Sheltie. Our Dobi will be 9 years old next month and hubby has already said no more after Dobi. For one it’s so heartbreaking losing another one. He says at our age he’s afraid the next one would out live us and we have no one who we could re-home him to. Now that makes me sad, I can’t imagine my life without a Sheltie. I’m hoping to be able to talk him into adopting a senior dog that we could love and give him a good life and let him know he was loved, but at the same time the heartache of losing another one, I just don’t know right now what we will do, all I can do is pray. 🙏🏻🐾❤️ I love this quote:
Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog, it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.” - Erica Jong

I currently have three dogs…, at one point we had a total of four. ❤
I agree with you regarding how much work it is to have a dog and how you have to think of the dog before planning to go anywhere etc. Because my husband and I have so many Dogs we need to get a petsitter very expensive, the petsitter has to come to the house at a minimum 3 times a days, Ching, Ching.
I have people come to me asking if they should get a dog, I ask them about their life/day. I have told a lot of people NO don’t get a dog your lifestyle does not fit having a dog. The people who I tell no are people who have never owned a Dog…, they honestly have no idea.
The pros of owning a Dog, cannot be measured. It’s heartbreaking when they die…, but the joy a Dog gives is indescribable, it’s something only a Dog Lover can understand, 🐾

We just put our Maltese down, age 14, and it’s been very hard. We have a Shih-Tzu, age 11, who was with her all his life. He is missing her and looks for her a couple of times a day. We’ve had dogs most all of our lives but we are 77 and 78 and we will not replace our Oscar when it is time for him to go. We live in Arizona and have to worry about coyotes and other wild animals so we have to be with him all the time when outside. Dogs are the best but they require unconditional love and responsibility and if you can’t give that to them then I don’t recommend getting a dog, especially.

Hi, Sandra! I love pets, especially dogs. Over a year ago, our sweet pup of 12 years old, Charlie, peacefully passed away in his sleep. We were heart broken and miss him so much. We rescued Charlie and we would love to adopt another dog but the truth is we can't afford the fees. We rescued Charlie from our local shelter and fees are much higher now. With so many pets needing a forever home, you would think they could keep the fees lower Sad because I really would like to have a little pup to be my companion. My husband and I are in our 70's and we would both love a pup.

I have found that quite a few elderly people get dogs, or their family members get them for them, and that they are unable to care for them. A dog or cat or any animal depends on its owner to give them a great quality of life for however long that may be. I hope any one of any age that is getting a pet really takes a hard, long, realistic look at the costs and all the care that goes with it. The shelters are already overun with dogs, many which are senior dogs. That is so heartbreaking! Please make sure you have a plan in place if you are unable to care for or keep your animals.

I have two cockapoos, they are super friendly and don’t bark too much. Don’t shed. 12 lbs and 15 lbs.
Before that I had chihuahuas they barked and shed, but they were very small 5 lbs and they lived 15 years. I have never caged my dogs or kennels but when they were puppies I did have the large play pen area to keep them contained in my living room. I am blessed my parents are alive and close and can take care of the dogs. We do travel a lot, and it would be very costly to have pet sitters for our trips and cruises. Today my parents do sit and they enjoy it. I work from home and I have a fenced yard and the dogs go out all day long open and close the door.

    Great tips, Mrs Sandra!!
We love our 140 lb, 3 yr old English Mastiff, by the name of Max. He sleeps with my hubby & I every night in a queen size bed....right in the middle. I call him our "bundling-board 😊Needless to say he's a whole lotta lovin' with a personality as big as he is. My hubby & I are 60 & 61 and retired. We live and travel full-time in our motorhome, which we have done so since we got Maximus at 6 wks old. I guess you can say that's pretty non-traditional. Yes, Lg dogs breeds like English Mastiffs can have an avg lifespan around 8-9 yrs. That's the sad part about it. Because they are Lg, the weight on their heart & frame can shorten their livespan. However, we had a mastidane that lived to be 11 yrs old. Definitely, you want to have health insurance for these big dogs. The larger the dog, the bigger the vet bill...it seems to be.
What have we learned by this non-traditional lifestyle with an Lg dog living full-time in an Rv? Even though we don't have a yard, with all the traveling we do, Max has had tons of trails to hike and beaches to walk. We just have to get creative. We were recently caretakers of an old ghost town, and we had a huge fenced-in yard for our motorhome, and Max had a ton of room to roam. Now we are traveling to see friends and family who, for the most part, are animal lovers too.
I would, however, say the downside might be the 14 walks per day on leash walks while staying in any Rv park as we're traveling across the states. I call Max my lil' jack-russel...he's young & still has a ton of energy!!...but he will grow out of that soon. One thing I wouldn't do past my 60's is own another large breed. I am in good condition for my age with no real health issues... as strong as these large breeds are, you have to be able to physically handle them... so you or they don't get hurt. They are very powerful. There's no way I foresee having a lg breed dog going into my 70's...but I know everyone is different.
All in all, the love Max shares and being able to be retired and spend everyday with him has been such a blessing.
If you get a chance, Max has his own Instagram you can always check him out along with our travels: MadMaxMastiff
    God bless you, Mrs. Sandra.

I love my little Jack Russell Terriers. We adopted them when they were 11 years old. Their family gave them up. We are giving them tons and tons of love. They really needed it. They were heart broken and traumatized. They couldn't understand why their family wasn't coming for them. Took us a good couple of months before they accepted their new situation. Yes. Fenced in yard is a must. Our two were not socialized so we have to be careful when we walk them. But they've gotten better. And you're right. No vacations since we got them. My husband said we'll give them the best years of their life while we have them. We can wait. We do take them with us when we go to our cabin up north, and they love that. They give us so much love. All my family’s pets are rescue animals… we will never pay for a pet.
Last year we lost 2 cats… one had been in our family since 2000 and one was 3 years old.
Our big mixed breed dog was found in middle of the road when she was 3 months old, she’s now 4 years old. Tomorrow she’ll be put to sleep for teeth cleaning and nails trimmed. The little dachshund was found on the streets by a veterinary. He’s 10 years old and high energy.
Yes , we travel at times with the dogs.
There are times pet friendly motels are hard to find.
I agree with the cons… the pros are worth it.
We have cried over the two cats deaths.
Food, vaccines, veterinary care, boarding fees and much more are part of pet ownership!!!

After he passed, I hated walking her at night, so I take her outside in the back yard. Have to stay with her to make sure she stays near the house. We get skunks coming through at night, and a raccoon! Cats are easier as they don't need to go out, and I like them, but am a bit allergic to them. And am really a dog lover. I am 69 with a chihuahua stray & 3 stray cats & I am a widow of 8 years. It’s a lot of daily care for them & expensive. What is a your health-do you have anyone to help with an animal if you need help. Do you live in a home or an apartment, are you in the sun belt or north, winters? It’s a long term daily commitment & ❤of them. Great companions-we have enough throw always.ok

Hi sandy, I really enjoyed your video about pros and cons of owning a dog. You covered it very well. I thought a few times of getting one. But you answered my questions. I’m 84. It would be too much for me, the care I mean. But thanks for solving my dilemma, Millie looks like a good doggie. And cute too. 😊

The people in my town look at me funny because I don't have one . They are everywhere. One complaint. If dogs are in the woods I don't see the need to pick up the stuff if its off the trail. In the city , yes . Stuff maintenance is a must . It bugs me when people pick up the stuff and then leave a bag of stuff on a rock or behind a tree. As a single person I would not get a dog. Not a fan. I have birds as pets but let them fly free outside.

@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 I know you do, thank you. Have you noticed how the male cardinal will feed the female ? Watch , she will vibrate to tell him she is hungry and he will put the food in her beak. Very cute. I love my Bald Eagles.

Yes, I have seen that, so sweet, my husband had a great experience with an Eagle swooping down and flying along side his car when he first moved to Tennessee. He has never forgotten that!

Marvelous video. You are giving us a well balanced perspective.
I am 67 and have plenty of people telling me we should get a dog.
No desire to be roused out of bed before I am willing.
Not going to pick up "poop" weekly.
Incessantly barking at everyone that goes by
    Vet bills.
    No thank you!!!
Elderly neighbors have 4 small dogs. They are sedentary and these dogs are the joy and delight of their lives. 🤷
    To each his own.

You should pick up poop where ever you live. When you poop in a toilet you flush it away. It’s disgusting to see or step on dog poop.

It seems that rescue dogs in our area are primarily pit bulls or pit bulls mix which I think are dangerous dogs. Our local news reported a man who was simply walking past a house and was attacked by three pit bulls, lost his arm, and died! I’ve checked online for different breeds of dogs, and they are expensive. When our children were young we had a wonderful cockatoo who lived 15 years. I got my husband a Welsh Corgei for our anniversary and he lived eight years. He died suddenly of a ruptured disc. Now I’m a 79 year old widow and would enjoy the company of a dog, but the cons outweigh the pros at this point of my life. Also I live in condo in MI and I wouldn’t enjoy taking a dog for a walk in the winter months. I loved our dogs but think it isn’t wise for me to get a dog at this time in my life and where I live.
