My daily razor 1951 Gillette ball end tech mild and perfect for shaving with everyday also so light and perfect for travel it's been all over the world with me I wouldn't be without it.
Like the analogy water into ice. I'm always trying to teach others without details the average person can't understand. If anyone has ever dropped and broken a pot-metal piece they'd usually see the crystals and air pockets from the pouring and the cooling similar to water to ice. Nice!√
I really like this video. I manufacture DE razors and I want to do things as "right" as possible. Your videos keep inspiring me to do exactly that! Thanks.
When I started wet shaving again, I was going to buy one of the modern razors until I discovered they all have pot metal heads. So I got the pliers out and straightened out the kinks in the Fatboy my dad gave me and used it. He got it in 1959 when he lost his shaving kit, it traveled with him all over the US until he quit long haul trucking in 1976. In 1983 he got a really nice shaving set and gave me the Fatboy along with his Made-Rite badger brush and Old Spice mug. The set then traveled the world with me until 1990 when I left the service. Needless to say, the Fatboy got a little beat up, so did the brush, but the mug is pristine.
Actually that is not completely true. FaTip razors are all brass too.And of course the Stainless Steel razos from iKon, Weber, Pils and Feather will last two lifetimes aswell(only problem with those:They are very expensive).
Can't agree more with vincent, and there is also a cost thing, EJ and merkur razors are availble for 20-30$. If cleaned properly, not dropped or hit with something razor should last. Their handles are made from brass, so even if head breakes it can easily be replaced. And another thing, there is growing number of DE shavers and now there is bigger number of reported broken razors on shaving forums, but for big majority of people it should last. I think bigger problem are handles without grip that lead to dropping them.
vincent lobo Junior, it's not just a few years, it's taken since 1959 of almost daily use to wear the plating on my Fatboy. Your pot metal razor will need replacing in 5 years or less, if I spend the $70 to refurbish my Fatboy I'll have another 57 years of use. I think that's a much better deal.
Hmmm….🤔🤔 as a man of physics I am listening with much curiosity. How was that brass created? Being a portion of tin with copper it must have been liquid at some time. It absolutely was a liquid once. No question. Lol Having said that…I love Matt, the channel and all things RE.
Hi Matt! I'm a big fan of your videos - as a newb, I've found your shaving technique videos to be particularly helpful. I'm just now starting to consider getting a vintage razor. After watching this video, I'm wondering: Are the 1930s Gillette TTO open comb razors (i.e., the Aristocrat, etc.) made from cast brass, or stamped brass?
Gillettes biggest mistake was made back in the 50's-60's. They built their razors too well. I have a few of them that I use and I'll be handing them down to my sons. It would not surprise me if they last long enough to be handed down to their sons.
Hey Matt, is there any difference between having a pot metal razor like a Merkur or a stamped vintage Gillette replated? Does the plating adhere to one better than the other? Is it worth the investment to get a nice plate job on a pot metal razor?
What a way to manipulate people into getting Vintage Razors ! I purchased a Merkur 34c HD five years back. Its price was 30 $ .After shaving i wipe my razor with a dry cloth . I keep it in my cupboard ( In a plastic box) which is dry and free of moisture. I never had a problem with plating atleast till now and my razor works fine. If this razor even works for 5 more years ill be happy. Im sure it will work for more years than i expect. Buying vintage razor imo is only waste of money as it cost a lot. Fatboys in good condition easily costs above 100 $ in mint condition depending from where you get it. If in not so condition then maybe lesser but atleast above 50 $ . Now i use a fatboy for 5 or 10 years and after that it gives problems so i need to spend 70 $ including shipping for the repairs. If you use common sense a modern merkur razor (around 30 $) if used and taken care properly should atleast work for 10 years. So after that i can buy another one for maybe 30-40 $ in range. Instead of spending money in repairing an old razor by paying 70 $ now and 100 $ later( After a few years) i would obviously buy a new one around 30-40 $. Pot metal razor would only break if you purposely throw it with force on the ground .
I like the 1960s Gillette Safety Razors but just find the handles way too short. When you hold them they lack having what feels like a good grip. I have small hands and still find them tiny. Love their head design and their quality but prefer modern long knurled handles more. The positive is that you can swap the handles on the three piece shavers. Kind of the old meeting the new.
Why Razo charge so much for tuning and other service for vintage razor I mean one can buy new razor for that price and good brand razor cost in between 25 to 35 bucks you should make it reasonable price just tuning cost about 45 bucks
I realize that this is an "old" video. But, then, again, so is my 1917 Gillette Old Type razor. My question is simply this: Will a $300 modern, precision milled titanium or spendy exotic hand balanced & finished razor really shave any better than the BBS shave I already get from my 100 year old $30 vintage Gillette?
You will definitely get a very good shave from those ultra premium razors. You can also get a good shave from a Merkur or Weishi. The major difference is the shave quality. My Gillette Slim adjustable gives a very good shave. I use the higher settings so it's on the aggressive side. But the shave is Damm close. But my Aristocrat razor gives me a mild and smoother shave. The ATT, Timeless and others have a different feel. These razors have a 3 piece simple design.
Absolutely not. Keep using your vintage razor. I do. I use a 1947 to 1950 Tech Ball End gold, a Flat-Bottom Tech Made In England, a Rotbart with aluminium guard and handle, and very similar to a Tech, and a GEM / STAR SE "Flytrap" razor. Would not replace any of them with any modern garbage razor.
I've gotta hand it to you things back then were build better and are more efficient and effective and durable also mainly the manufacturing quality on vintage safety razors where build to last and most importantly you can get it repaired it can't get any better then that I much prefer vintage safety razors over modern safety razors remember things back then where build to last so I think that it's worth the money purchasing a vintage razor. also remember you get for what you pay for so a modern $30 dollar cheap razor blade won't last and I wouldn't expect it too either sometime in the future you'll have to invest on another one so you add that up to $60 and you can get a vintage razor sometimes being too cheap can cost you more then rather buying something that has good quality more durable and it'll last you on a long run.
Cant you send mee a mesage hear on UA-cam, i wont to send yuo some gillette wintage to fix and restore, im from europe, it will take a time when will get too you, i dont know howe long will take, please write a adres where to send thanks
I recently found my Dad's collection of vintage razors. He spent years buying them at flea markets and yard sales. Let me know if anyone is interested. Here are the photos: share.icloud.com/photos/0wpjRG6RVjdvfU4W2aJhGwatg

Matt thanks for all the good advices, it's great to have and enjoy this chanel.
Congrats
Very good. I had always thought cast was stronger. I Lear a lot from your videos. Keep ‘em coming. I’m enjoying the replanted fatboy I bought from RE.

Great story thanks for sharing! We could tune up the razor if you want- you'd be amazed how much better they look and function. Thx!
RazorEmporium Didn't know you did tune ups, I'll see about getting it to you next week.

Right. Then turned into a sheet metal and stamped into a form.
Very different than liquid zinc being bored into a cast.
@@RazorEmporium Yes, at that stage. But it WAS liquid at one time. No question. Just not at Gillette.
Thanks, Matt. Do you know of any brand that has durable metalwork? Something like the good vintage Gillette or better?

The open comb TTO razors are stamped brass! Those razors are very durable and great shavers!
Gillettes biggest mistake was made back in the 50's-60's. They built their razors too well. I have a few of them that I use and I'll be handing them down to my sons. It would not surprise me if they last long enough to be handed down to their sons.
I think back then Gillette had a saying like “we make the razors last and sell the blades”
And they ripped you off in razor blade cost after buying razor.
"Planned obsolescence" was not a thing then. They built it the razor to last, even though they were in the razor BLADE selling business.
Sounds like how Borgward went out of business.

Does the plating adhere to one better than the other? Is it worth the investment to get a nice plate job on a pot metal razor?
Yes! Plating a pot metal razor a second time doesn't go as well. Hence why we dropped support of them.

Why do you not screw on a toothbrush handle? It is people like you that make companies produce garbage products. Long handles are for BETA males.
I was thinking
why gillette do not introduce to their offer vintage safty razors, thay would sell like hotcakes.
Now I understand. Thank you .
