Mark will have seen him while he was at Shawn Michaels' wrestling school in Texas (where Mark's from). Super, super early. He'd only been wrestling for a year when he signed his first contract: I'm assuming this is what Mark's talking about, if they didn't even know his height at the time.

I still remember that Monday Night Raw when all WWE/World Heavyweight champions were in the ring for Cena and Randy’s big match, and the crowd were all chanting for Daniel Bryan. Even when it wasn’t even about him. And Mark raised Daniel’s hand for the crowd. Great moment.
I love that Mark is still humble in telling this story and doesn't inflate or exaggerate his role. He didn't say he discovered, coached or made Daniel Bryan into what he became; he saw a guy with amazing talent, helped get his foot in the door, and Bryan did the rest.
