First time iv heard this song, just beautiful the Irish have wonderful poetry and there fight for freedom is known all over the world
I'm 30 year old dubliner who has heard this song thousands of times, I still cry when I hear Luke sing.
None better than Luke Kelly
He wrings the tears outta me
Bloody brilliant
It was a poem by the poet Patrick Kavanagh based on a real life one sided love affair he had with a woman much younger than himself.
They hung out together for a few months in Dublin and he tried to pass on to her all the knowledge he had of words and poetry etc (I gave her gifts of the mind etc).
However she had a real boyfriend down the country and finally broke up with Kavanagh (it was platonic). After a blazing row in the middle of the street she turned on her heel and walked away for good. (In a quiet street etc)
He went back to his lodgings on Raglan Road and jotted down notes on what had just happened.
He had kept the relationship on a platonic level and now realised that she was only human and he should have done more
(I have loved not as I should a creature made of clay... when the angel wooes the clay he'll lose his wings at the dawning of the day.
He's saying "I was too good for her anyway"
Luke's voice is perfection.
I’m an Irish Traveller. This man makes me even more proud to be Irish ☘️
You should be. As an arab i value your culture and heritage highly.
No such thing as a irish traveler only if they going on airplane for a holiday. native irish are Gael people that bare all irish surnames. travler isn't a race Gaels are Tál 🇮🇪 ⚓
The Irish aren't proud about you lot
Unless his ethnicity is an Irish traveller, right? Which I think he is stating in his comment.
@@goaskalice83there is no such thing as traveler ethnicity. There only Irish gaels and some native irish still live a nomadic way of life the Irish gaels who brang Gaeilge Gaelic to Scotland and the Isle of man and parts of Wales the Scottish were pics from picland spoke pictish wipe out by the Saxons Irish called it Albain mac MC ní ó all irish Gael bloodlines. The Irish gaels were first inhabitants on Iceland too before vikings. 60 percent of Icelandic share Gael Irish blood Tál. Stop trying to divide native irish people with Irish native surnames. There's only Irish gaels and no such thing as travlers as a race are ethnicity. Éire do Tál 🇮🇪 na hÉireann
Nice one, Petra. Decades ago Luke dropped in his banjo to my mother, asking her to look after it for the day. He was going to a wedding he said, and if he took it with him, people would insist that he sang. She took it; many hours later Luke called back to collect it. My mother went into front room to retrieve it, only to discover that it had been stolen during the course of the day, - seriously, she had one job to do. And at her funeral a couple of years ago, I made sure that the priest told that story. And a niece of mine sang Raglan Road as she was been taken from the church. The things you type at seven in the morning :) Take big care of you, you. Again, good job, and thanks for making me remember.
Maith thu 💚
Irish people listen to music with their eyes closed, so we can hear it better.
Well said pal. 💪🇮🇪💚
Facts!
I dunno, a bit more than that I think...that place between places...Lugh's golden tree!?! 😶🚪
Look after yourself, Petra! God bless from Ireland 🇮🇪🙏 Two Maestros - Patrick Kavanagh, who wrote RAGLAN ROAD, and Luke Kelly who sang it with such heart and soul ❤
Perfect diction and tone he never needed to force his accent out he just sang and today he teaches the angels to sing
Based on a poem by Irish Poet Patrick Kavanagh
who is the man with the closed eyes in the video... one of the few videos of him.
@@Connnor one of the people with their eyes closed were connected with Irish music.
@@Connnor Luke Kelly of the Dubliners, hours of video of him out there 👍🏻
As someone who knows the 'enchanted way' is not a metaphor but a road ... this song always brings me back to Dublin as a young man. The words of Paddy Kavanagh and sung by our finest bard.
Voted Ireland's favourite song of all time. Beautifully tragic unrequited love.
"Is he enjoying it or is he sleeping?" He's trying to hold his emotions in, trust me lol
All the people knew they were in the presence of greatness.
It was a poem written by Patrick Kavanagh , a story of unrequited love. The object of his affection was a pupil of his, she never knew that he loved her. It is a sad touching piece of writing and who better to sing it than Luke ❤
This is quite good. I was a little surprised to see him playing a banjo, but the sound was just right for this song. Although I am 35 years late with this wish, RIP Luke Kelly.
The -tenor- banjo actually was Luke's go-to instrument. It's not very prominent in the Dubliners, what with them having banjo master Barney McKenna in their lineup, but when singing solo Luke usually accompanied himself on the banjo. It's horribly out of tune here, but Luke's voice can make even that work.
@@HotelPapa100 Luke played the five string Banjo, Barney played the Tenor Banjo, just to set the record straight.
Quite Good having a laugh ain’t ya Luke was wonderful
Hope you're OK now. Great to see this - Luke Kelly was the best Irish singer ever, and this is one of his iconic performances. Unfortunately for us all, he died far too young.
Raglan Road a song from a poem by Patrick Kavanagh. Irish music is the only music that can make you cry and laugh at the same time.🍀 be well young Petra
The definitive recording of the song.
I can hear and smell the rain on the cobblestone streets in his playing.
I met Luke in Koln in Germany in about 1982 with the Dubliners of course , I was an international trucker and I was offloading the next morning in Koln …I went into a bar and there was Luke Kelly and Barney Mc Kenna and what shocked me most most of the people knew who they were, I said hello to the boys and told them who I was , from somewhere musical instruments appeared and a session began…What a fantastic night was had by all, Luke sang Raglan road and Barney on the banjo, at the finish the crowd erupted and before I knew the Poliezi arrived…Someone phoned them as they thought a fight had broke out, in the end the Police stayed quietly drinking a beer or 2 and a great night was had by all…Luke Kelly was Dublin and he was a fantastic singer , Raglan road was made for him…I really could not get over just how popular the Dubliners were in Germany , they absolutely loved them, well done Germany 👏👏…
Al O'Donnnell was a beautiful guitar player, and also a camera man with RTE Television. This is the definitive version. Petra, I wish you the very very best!
For those new, see how much the song means to the audience. Not asleep, just still with emotion and respect.
That her hair dark hair would one day leave a snare that I would one day rue...... Stunningly beautiful.
Luke Kelly was the greatest Irish singer of all time. RIP, Luke x
Good man, Luke.
I find many of the greatest Irish songs, including Raglan Road, and even the style of Luke Kelly, are hard to react to for someone hearing it for the first time, especially if they've always listened to other genres of music. In fact, they may not even understand why so many live it so dearly. I think this was clearly the place Petra was in.
The secret is keep listening. Listen to it again. You will grow to understand it, to hear what's in it and to love it.
What may start out as a song you didn't even like on first hearing, may in fact become your favorite song.
Petra said she was sick and pregnant and grieving her friend during this reaction ( that said its my 1st time coming across Petra). Wasn't it a perfect choice though for the soothing of her grieving soul?! I agree, I hope she does come back to rediscover it too. And that times are easier for her now.
Luke was amazing; he IS essence of Irishness, Kavanagh(s Raglan Road) the essence of Ireland. ✌️🇮🇪
The song is based on true events and is about a man professing his love and getting rejected.
Patrick Kavanagh based on him
Aw I would love to say cheer up and all would be well. But I’ll say be well and stay happy, a song from me is , Luke Kelly singing, a song for Ireland 🇮🇪, from me to you 👍, my beautiful country gives me tears of joy. I hope this can give you a few tears of joy too 🤗
The instrument is a banjo.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
_As a child I remember learning the song in Irish as "Fáinne Geal An Lae" (The Dawning Of The Day)..Long before Raglen Road. I am familiar with the Kelly family and indeed I remember Luke & his partner sitting beside me in a pub just a few weeks before he left us. Ní fheicimíd a leithéad arís_
Lots of love Petra!!! Try to stay strong and don't give up cause these "odd" times. Just keep being and showing as you are. Your weirdos love you in the good and in the bad moments and we fully get you 💞
So sorry to hear about the lost of your friend. thanks for all the hard work, time and love you put into all of your videos. nice voice Luke Kelly has, nice performance by the two on banjo and guitar. will need to listen to this song again. please take care of yourself and Leona within thanks petra.

Luke Kelly does a beautiful job, as always, of this very moving piece. It is from a Poem by Patrick Kavanagh, about a love that he couldn't have, She was married, and they had a meeting, but they couldn't go on with the affair. Here is a link to the original poem and the lyrics: ua-cam.com/video/1zAKth3GD1U/v-deo.html

Truely beautiful. The poetry of Patrick Kavanagh beautifully transformed by the timeless vocals of Luke Kelly. Two Irish men demonstrating the Irish soul. Language and music.
Thank-you
The great Luke kelly..legend
I grew up listening to Luke and the Dubliners, this still gets me
It's a song written originally as a poem about a girl who Paddy Kavanagh had fallen in love with
Luke put a melody to it and made it a song
R.I.P Luke
Very sorry for ur loss btw
Love this version of this song Luke Kelly best singer to come out of our lil island called Ireland he poured his heart and soul into it
Hope all is better now after your friend passed and baby is born best wishes from Ireland, cold play lights is a good tune and a good Irish song Grace
Ah luke was one of the best bless him.Everytime i hear this the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
Luke kelly, Ireland's greatest son. I taught art to an older lady who as a school girl got a bus home everyday with the poet Patrick Kavanagh who wrote this beautiful song. The bus always had to make a stop in the ditch for him to pee, he was always drunk.
Kind Petra, please do a review of a great rock band "The Warning" an amazing team of sisters Alejandra, Paulina and Alejandra Villarreal with their greates 2nd. album, specifically the first song "Dust to Dust"; they are very talented and you will be surprised with their performance, power and lyrics in this 2nd. album; they are an independant band who deserves your kind atention and review.... A fan from Monterrey, MEXICO, homeland of "The Warning"
My prayers are with you. God bless you.
the instrument is the banjo.
and at the end theirs a bit of irish, saying thank you-to Luke Kelly and then thank you - to the audience
Patrick kavangh wrote tat as a poem . And only luke kelly can sing it its a ballad whitch is a story the more u listen the more u.ll understand it. Powerfull
The song is about unrequited love which is why it has such a melancholic feel
Just saw your comments.Hope you are okay.love from Ireland.
Luke Kelly was the best ever
I was in Kilkenny city when News of Lukes stroke broke .the Dubliners were there including Ronnie so bloody sad
Best wishes Petra, from Ireland
One of my favourite tunes I play on my bagpipes Dawning Of The Day
Irish person here just letting you know the guy in the audience was not being disrespectful. Everyone sits back and close your eyes . Just take in the experience and don interup
Luke Kelly...in my mind the best male Irish singer. Died at f***ing 43 years old. How fair is this world?
LEGEND.
The great Gails of Ireland all their wars are merry and all their songs are sad
6:27 - "beautiful and haunting song"
It is said that Irish people don't often sing a happy song, but they'll sing a sad song happy.
Some British imperlist said about the irish " all their songs are sad and all their wars are happy " makes sense as all our wars were against British imperlist scum and any day your dying for your country or killing British imperlist scum is a great day , Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦
wow!
Patrick Kavanagh wrote this about Hilda Moriarty whom he had a great unrequited love for. She married a Donagh O'Malley who became a government minister. She was very beautiful.
in the local one night and that came on, the whole bar went quite
I'm very sorry for your loss
This was my song to my lost love
Whilst I love Luke Kellys singing style and presence, the beauty here is in the lyrics.
On Raglan Road started life as a poem by Irish poet Patrick Cavanagh. It was written autobiographically about his early life as a teacher in Dublin, where he fell in love with a young student, who never became aware of his affection for her. He would meet her every morning and she would never know of his love. As described in this video Luke Kelly met Patrick Cavanagh in a Dublin pub many years later and Cavanagh challenged Kelly to set his poem to music. Kelly, being the musical genius that he was, set the poem to the air of a very old Irish traditional song The Dawning Of The Day, perhaps taking his cue those words being included in Cavanagh's poem. On Raglan Road has been recorded by many artists down the years since, but most would agree that nobody ever sang it better than the late Luke Kelly.
Sorry to correct you but It’s Patrick Kavanagh not Cavanagh
@@murpho999 Point taken. No offence meant.

Luke nearly swallowed the cats tail!
An old fine song and an honest reaction. Im struggling myself to try to be able to walk again after I broke my back, but what really bother me is that my brain becom scattered by the trauma, so, I know what you are going through. Losing the edge for a moment. Anyhow, if you liked this song you will probely like 'Black is the colour' by Christy Moore. Take care and God speed. And, greetings from Gothenburg, Sweden.
The instrument is called a banjo!
I think he is very good at this.... Yes he is!!
Hi Petra..yes, The Warning Band!
I love the line from Alice and Wonderland "The queen of Hearts was still making Tarts"
The music is from another Irish song:. The Dawning Of The Day. Patrick Kavanagh acknowledged this by putting the words: '.....at the dawning of the day' into his poem. He was suggesting that air should be used to convert his poem into a song.
"and grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day", hope you are in a better place today hun
The great Luke Kelly r.i.p.
"Love Scorn not his simplicity" , sad true words about a young child.
Ireland’s greatest musician, gone way too soon. RIP Luke, may heaven be your home 💔🇮🇪🕊️
Let your grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day ☘
Ireland loves you Petra

It is about unrequited love 😮
Please, react to Dust to Dust by The Warning. Just listen to it!! Thanks
Listen to the studio version by luke. It's actually a very difficult song to do live because it is a waltz timing.
