My old Norwegian neighbor told me the mittens they would knit for the seamen were twice the size of the fisherman's hands, in all directions. The motions of fishing made them felt in length and width.
How very interesting! I suppose the felting adjustment can be applied to other garments/ accessories too!
Finally it’s been said out loud! I’ve figured out by myself that I need as tight gauge as possible, just like you said. It’s KEY! I’m always shocked when I see sock patterns written for 2,5 or even 3mm needle with a very loose gauge. Unless they’re meant to be house socks, I think it’s a waste of time and energy. There’s no way such a loose knit fabric can survive normal wear.
Another thing is the hype on super squishy merino sock yarns. I mean… they are lovely and super duper soft but personally I’d never use them for socks that are meant to be worn often. But hey, that’s just me. I know people knit socks with hand dyed yarns so maybe it works 😊

I didn't know about the fuzzy stuff so thank you!! I just finished the foot of my very first sock, i took a personal class to learn it. I'm so proud 🥲 I'm going to make them short to cover the ankle and add a little picot.

This video is one of my favorites! After years of knitting socks of varying yarns and weights, I love fingering weight, non-nylon, woolly socks. I too have learned the 3x1 rib lasts longer for utilitarian type socks, along with Jacob sheep blends. I am also experimenting with Navaho churro sheep/bison blends of yarns here in the US. I was introduced to your yarns via Woolly Thistle and the hearth sock yarn is awesome! Greetings from North Carolina :)

Thanks for the tips Emma! I just learned to knit socks over the summer and started with aran and worsted weight yarns. Just finished my first pair of fingering weight socks in Isager sock yarn, they were toe-up and I made them a little shorter than my foot and they feel pretty good. Just started my first cuff-down socks in retrosaria mondim and I appreciate the tip about felting and knitting them longer! Now I don't need to worry about accidentally making them too long!
I've been experimenting lately with different sock yarns as I've found I really don't love superwash wool, and I'd really rather not use nylon. I have an old skein of your natural sock that I'm excited to knit up, and sometime soon I've got to get some of your hearth sock to try! might hold it double for a more dk weight boot sock :)

Anyone tried knitting socks with istex lettlopi? Its not tight twist but know people do it and I wonder how it fares. Istex also have a fingering weight lopi yarn that I might try.
Will definitely get some hearth sock at some point too. Looks lush.

Thanks for this information. I have been knitting socks for years from super wash merino with no nylon and now it is hard to get it without nylon. I will not go there. I really like the look of your sock wools and although I am in Australia I will at some stage buy some. When I have run down my stash a bit and my finances allow. Love your approach.💕

You've mentioned in multiple videos that you're a loose knitter. Me too. I usually have to go to 1.5 mm or so to keep the gauge. What do you do to keep it to 35 sts/10 cm?

I think the best tip is to cut your toenails and use a good cream on your feet to keep your heels soft and callous-free.😉

I think that's a great idea! I heard this tip recently. I also heard about knitting area of your socks that wear quickly with a thicker weight wool!
I am knitting the zoe zipper sweater from Sandnesgarn, but making it into a cardigan. The #multecardigan is also high up on my knitlist! Just have to figure out which colours. Would love to heat your review on that. Feel like the Multe would look amazing on you!

Emma, I’m experimenting with holding your Natural Sock Yarn double and knitting up a swatch. You say in the beginning of the video that you want no less than 35 st per 10 cm… but what would this be with yarn held double? Do you remember what gauge worked for you with the double stranded socks you made?
No that only it held single! Hmm I can’t remember but I can measure a swatch and see! I need to start writing things down!
