- Now that we are settled in, we thought we should revisit our walkthrough video and give you a more complete view into our new home. Come with us as we take you through our Island Packet 38 inside and out! Enjoy!
Best Island Packet 38 walk through I have seen!! Great job for those of us interested in buying one. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, good video, informative look forward to seeing more videos from you.
My wife, daughter and I lived on our IP38 Hull 42 for 5 years. It is a absolutely great sailboat. Have fun!
Thanks Larry, so far so good!
Great boat and a really good tour! To solve your annoying anchor chain problem, pause the chain recovery at 50%, then 1 person below should aim the PVC to the empty space, confirm the new aim to person above, then resume chain recovery. Do the same for releasing the anchor to ensure a smooth anchoring.
Great tip Leo and thanks for checking out my channel!
Thanks for the walkthrough. I've been looking at Island Packets, and I like your honesty about the good and the not so good.
You are welcome and I hope you found it helpful!
Nice walkthrough guys, lovely boat! Recommend, though, that you look up the laws governing how far offshore you need to be in US waters before you can legally pump out overboard using the macerator...
12 miles???
@@TaylanYalniz 3 miles.
He said "a couple miles" which is correct.
Nice boat!
Fantastic job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Lovely yacht. I'm no expert at IP's but the layout appears identical to the IP40. I guess one advantage of the 38 over the 40 is the holding tank location on the 40 is under the front bed.....so replacement involves cutting into the bed frame for access to remove.
Thinking about buying an Island Packet. Loved this walk though of your, thank you!
Thanks for the tour, very informative. I'm looking at an IP35 and learning as much about the brand as possible. The tanks and chain plates scare me most on the 90's IP's.
My tanks are aluminum so I'm happier with that than the black Iron some brands are known to have. Plus mine are centerline and below the salon sole so if I did need to tear them out, I think it would be better than if they were mounted next the hull and under cabinetry. My chain plates seem to have a good reputation as far as I can tell, no problems in the survey, no leaks, but I also haven't seen them myself. They are seriously buried!
@@svstellaj1530 Thank you for the kind and informative reply, I'm anxious to buy a boat and put in a couple of years exploring the east coast maybe more, only time will tell. Unless something changes my mind I'll be in a 35 foot Island Packet. I did a test run from Mobile Alabama to Jacksonville Florida in January 2021 via the Okeechobee Canal on a 20 foot open fisherman to see if I had it in me, Loved it!!! Stayed on the boat 5 nights and 3 in hotels for about 1100 miles.I've got the fever!!!! I Really appreciate folks like yourself that do the videos.
Our boat was actually trucking to the west coast from Alabama! 1100 miles is quite the run, keep up the good work!
@@svstellaj1530 is the holding tank under the port settee like the IP35? If so thats much easier to remove than other IP where its under the sole $$$.
@@willyum1208 that’s correct. I actually had to replace the holding tank in Santa Rosalia and I was thankful of the location then! It’s the only tank you can remove without tearing up the sole.
Finally narrowed it down to an island packet 38. Smooth sailing brother
Thanks for checking out my vids Matthew, fair winds and following seas!
@@svstellaj1530 prior Navy? That's one of our quotes lol. You did get me to subscribe so keep uploading them videos! Love to have you guys do one about the recommended maintenance
@@Oncewaslostbutnowimsaved Army but close! I will keep your recommendation in mind! I will have plenty to do before the departure to Mexico.
Heel veel plezier van deze boot ,met altijd ruimte onder de kiel en voor de boeg dit met een Zw windje 4a5 goede vaart.groeten uit Holland.
With 2 heads and you use the bow head place the spinnaker in aft head and wet gear. Great looking boat.
Last year, I sailed on a 40 IP with the exact same layout. I love that Pullman bed and plenty storage. Much better than a V berth layout. We too had the issue with the anchor chain, though we did not have that pipe, and we still had the self tacking stay sail. I like that cockpit full covers. Fair winds.
We just got back from a week out in the Islands and the dang anchor chain was nothing but a pain in the neck, not to mention the washdown pump quit working!! I'm sure you'll see us revamping the current setup in the near future.
Nice video. Great boat. That will be our upgrade from the 32 :)
I’ve been thinking about “starting” with the 32! These comments and the walkthroughs have made me look a lot closely at these boats, plus them being built in Largo, Florida in the states.
wow only a 3 feet upgrade, I wonder why they called it a 32 with a 35' LOA? This begs the question are the 32's priced cheaper than the 35's, even though they are the same LOA?
I love the second walk through you guys! Can't wait to come up and hang out in your new covered helm area with a couple of lagers.
You my friend are ALWAYS welcome on my boat!
Love the video. Bonus points for the Blenders
You know your sunglasses! Thanks for watching Andy, I’m glad you liked the vid:)
Thanks for the tour. Can you tell how long the berths are? Thanks in advance.
Hello Pat, both berths measure 6'6".
@@svstellaj1530 Perfect, I'm 6'5" and shrinking. Thanks much.
I would love to sail the Sea of Cortez. Some day. Hopefully.
MAKE IT HAPPEN!! :)
Happy to see another IP38 on Utube. We also have a 1992 IP38, hull #172. What is your hull #. Feel free to contact me with any questions about the boat. We post some sailing videos on Utube under sailingwiththecuscus. Nothing as good as your videos though, keep up the good work!
Hey guys, thanks for checking out my vids!! I've been trying to figure out my hull # and I don't see it marked clearly. If its the last 3 digits of the HIN, I suppose it would be hull # 192. Your boat is beautiful BTW, you can see the pride of ownership!!
@@svstellaj1530 your HIN # (on upper right corner of your transom, and on your title and probably lots of your purchase paperwork). It will start with "TDL", Island Packets were made by Traditional Watercraft.. The next 2 should be "38", which is the model. The next three are your hull number. The last 4 are the date the hull was made. So your boat was made on the first day of ? Month, 1992. There should be a letter in front on your 192, which would be the month, a=Jan, etc.
Keep the videos coming, and good luck in your adventures. Feel free to reach out with questions or just conversation about sailing. Probably easiest to communicate via FB messenger. Send me friend request, if you want, Jim Van Lenten.
@@SailingwithTheCuscus Looks like I'm 166 then. As far as the letter in front of the 192, I cant think of a month that starts with the letter C..?
@@svstellaj1530 ok cool. Looks like you boat was owned by someone from Alabama at one point ( there is an owner registry on the Island Packet owners site, IPhomeport.com)
You should join and update the registry. There is a TON of good info there. I was wrong about the last 4 digits. The last 2 are the model year, and the 2 before that are the month and year the hull was started. So your hull was laid in March of 91. "c" being the 3rd month.
Small world, we have hull 173 great boats
Nicely put together. You said this 38 was on the hard for awhile. If you don't mind me asking what was the price. I'm currently looking at a 38 in Connecticut. These Island packets aren't cheap and finding one in the shape yours is in would still hold it value for a long time to come. I'm looking forward to seeing more on your video's in the future. God bless
Hello James, from the stories I've been told, our boat was on the hard for approx 3 years from a long drawn out refit. Around $100K in receipts from the refit were provided, but the owner was never present so the rest of the boat was sorely neglected. The asking price was $149,000 but all said and done, we paid $122,000. The survey turned up a overheating issue with the engine, which I have addressed. You can see the problem I had in the following episode. Thanks for checking out my videos, take care!
ua-cam.com/video/6qmMaQuIj9Y/v-deo.html
I can't take credit for as it was made by the previous owners, regarding the anchor chain issue AND storing the spinnaker - I have an IP45 and have sloping shelf on one side of the anchor locker and on the other side is stored the spinnaker. Shame I can't add a photo, a little untidy looking but it works pretty well for both jobs and so far the chain doesn't bunch up.
That's a great idea for both!! I may try and stuff my spinnaker in there as well!!
Love the entire cockpit covering, dodger, Bimini, all connected and all around! Love it! Looks very sturdy too. Any specific brand/custom? Can you share info on costs as well?
Hello Taylan, we had the full enclosure done by a local guy out of Bellingham. He was recommended from a reliable company who themselves were to backed up to help us out. It wasn't cheap, that's for sure. The entire frame needed alterations and with all the work making everything from scratch, the end cost was around $10k. This also included replacement side screens for when we want to let the breeze in but not the sun. Hope this helps.
@@svstellaj1530 thank you so much
Great walkthrough! I’m currently looking at a IP40 for sale, but the bimini came off in a storm. Can you reply with the company info for Philip, the guy who did your canvas? I can’t find it by the company name (I’m probably spelling it wrong)
Sorry for the late reply, I forgot to let you know I reached out to Philip and left a voice mail. He hasn't responded but if you get ahold of Oyster Creek Canvas, these are the people who recommended him in the first place.
love the add on swim deck, I' actually prefer it over the scoop. I'm surprised more older IP don't have these added.
The swim deck is super stable too, we've had the dog and both of us on the deck at once and it feels like it could hold much more. I think its more usable than a sugar scoop..
@@svstellaj1530 its even color matched to the IP hull. Do you know who manufactured it? Beachcomber?
@@willyum1208 I'm not sure, Marine Servicenter did all the work. I do know that they stripped a spot on the bow so they could see the original color to match something on the stern, swim deck??
Your boat is impressive and the video was well done. Any chance on providing a source for the Island Packet badges?
Thanks Dan! Because my emblems were gifted to me, I'm not sure where they were purchased. Here is a link to IP's website where you can buy them directly but be warned, they are not cheap! ipy-com.3dcartstores.com/Deck-Rigging_c_19.html
Ask at any sign store, if they have the clip art or a picture they can copy they’re easy to make. I think “Fast Signs” can do them and they have franchises all over the place. You can probably use the video for them to copy, actually. (I owned a sign shop before retiring.)
Congratulations on buying your nice boat can you edit your audio so we can hear it
Hello Wayne, I hope my newer videos are more equalized for you, I have been trying to address this. I edit with headphones but some peoples audio setup is different and can come across badly.
I'm looking at a 38 Island Packet in La Paz that is for sale now. is this your boat?
No, we haven't arrived to La Paz yet, plus its too soon to sell her! She hasn't taken all my money yet ;-)
@@svstellaj1530 Hello guys. It’s a coincidence I found you because there is a boat in La Paz the same as yours although an 89. I haven’t caught up to your videos but if you get there message me I would love you to have a look at it for me. I live in Vancouver Washington and it’s ironic I was just up in Blaine two weeks ago trying to cross the border.
@@bseachamp Small world! If we make it to La Paz before the boat sells, I will definitely take a look for you!
I’ve been looking at the IP brand. Some told me they make poor speed you need to turn the motor on to tack. Any truth in that?
Well Greg, like any boat, what’s the wind like when you tack? More wind, the better! Yes, I’ve turned the motor on before, but in light winds. We prefer to furl in the head sail a bit while on the wind, then tack. The jib will pull through quicker allowing for a faster maneuver. But really, we make 4-7kts like anyone else, however performance boats will always kick our ass😉🤷🏼♂️
Thanks for the reply. What is considered a performance boat? My plans are during retirement to sail from the Delaware area down to the islands during the winter and return I don’t need anything fast I believe.
Sorry for the delay in a response, we just got back to the land of internet!
Production boats like Beneteau or Jeanneau are typically lighter with less displacements and are faster. Google the type of boat you may be looking at and check its blue water rating. Island Packets, Tayana's, Passports, they will all be rated a class A blue water cruiser. Also, the longer the water line, the faster your boat will go. We just motored from Bahia de los Muertos to La Paz at 2700rpm and had an average cruising speed of 6.5.
Guys! I’m desperate......I just bought a IP38 Hull #180. It’s 3 hours away so I can’t measure myself. Can you tell me the size of the toilets? I need to order replacements asap and don’t know if I should get “compact” or standard”! HELP
I hope this isn't coming too late, we've been sailing around without internet.
We have Raritan PH Superflush which a quick measurement shows
14"H 18"W 17"D. West Marine sells them for $330, I hope this reaches you in time!!
Got it! Thanks!
Price if you don’t mind
$122,000
que precio donde lo entrega o busco uno 35 o 37 pies island packet ok este es mi correo
Great job! More more more says Hayden :-) ...as for your anchor chain PVC pipe, I recommend that your remove that and put in a steep starboard open ramp. That way the chain will drop off and not jam up. You can see photos on my 2001 commissioning old site here: fhayden.com/rockhallfleet/islandspirit/anchor_system.htm
I will keep that in mind! That may just be the fix I've been looking for, thanks!!!
@@svstellaj1530 our IPYOA fleet of owners has been there, done that, and has seen it all. Just ask for solutions and someone will have it. That's the power and beauty of owning an IP, we are very connected and love to help
