Here's a bit more info on our wiring/setup:www.physanon.com/cloud-chamber-stuff/
Suggestion if you're building your own: experiment with the voltages on your stack. The bottom layer will pretty much always be run full tilt, but the mid and top layers get big gains by even a half a volt adjustment. 12-6-4 worked really well for our setup, but I've had different numbers for different stacks before too.

The "cloth" ball looks like a gasmantle, which is mostly made from thoriumoxide and a bit of ceriumoxide. Both are radioactive

Nailed it, and it was so much more radioactive than we expected. Can't believe we used those camping probably 100 times as kids

You could use an excentric grinder with scotch pads. That leaves an awesome finish on aluminum parts. You can also sand it with the grinder if you like, great surface ~ 400-600 grid

Just for history, Wilson original chamber was using quick vacuum in a vapor saturated glass container, at least initially with water. It was not a "continuum cloud" device. Wilson introduced it to the Royal Society in 1912 (but the original idea dated back to 1899). The diffusion chamber like this was later proposed by I. C. Cornog , from Pennsylvania U., and further modified by R. B. Moody.

We need to see the electronics and wiring and stuff for this... you've got those digital meters on the top (their "camera flicker" just made the whole thing look LOADS more sci-fi) and that sensor poking up into the chamber... they must all be connected to something?
It's nice watching machines make chips and stuff but please remember the wire-heads in the audience. :)

Sure did: galvanic corrosion is a real thing and all, but modern coolants do a good job of keeping it minimal. Example: most cars have a mix of aluminum, cast-iron, and copper throughout their cooling chain but they last for 20-50 years at much higher temperatures.
