  • In this video I talk about the Hegner scroll-saw, I discuss various aspects and features of the machine and offer some useful tips on it's use.
    There is an excellent woodworking forum which has a special section on Scrollsawing.
    It is a worthwhile place to visit and ask any questions that you have on the hobby. I am a member there myself under the name scrimper.

    Just picked up an old single speed Hegner Multicut 2 (from before they had the quick tensioning lever) to help make use of little offcuts from my general woodwork which I can't bring myself to throw away.
    It cost about the same as the generic Chinese machines, which I did consider, but I'm glad I went with the Hegner.
    This video has been brilliant for helping me assess machines before buying them, and then getting it set up and running.
    Thank you

      Hello Peter, many thanks for your kind comments about my videos, it makes my effort in making them very worthwhile. You were wise in buying a Hegner, I bought mine new 24 years ago and to this day never regretted buying it, they are a joy to use.
      If you haven't already done so I would urge you to retrofit the quick tension lever kit it makes blade changing so much easier, Unless you change the whole top arm (expensive) the retro lever will be at the back but it is much better than having to keep adjusting with a threaded knob so to speak. It's essential if you do lot's of internal cuts. John.

    Even though I don't have a Hegner I found this video both enjoyable and informative. Based on personal experience I agree completely with your advice to buy a good quality machine to start with. I unfortunately did not do this. I bought a very cheap Wen saw which I hated. I returned it after three unpleasant weeks of trying to use it. I then bought a much more expensive Pegas and have not at all regretted spending the extra money. It's a joy to use. Thanks again for another excellent video.

      James thank you so much for your very kind comment. Glad you now have a decent machine. I have not used a Pegas saw but I have head lot's of good reports on them and nothing negative. As I said in the video a cheap machine will drive you mad but a good one will bring huge joy and you soon forget the extra you paid.

    Thanks for the scroll saw video. I learned a lot about how they operate. I looked up the prices on Amazon and you are correct in that they are pricey. A quick check on Amazon found an 18" variable speed Hegner is $1,545.00 US. A 21" variable speed Hegner is $1,795.00 US. A Hegner 14" single speed is $885.00 US. I would guess they are worth the price if one is involved in doing delicate work.

    • @scrimperuk
      @scrimperuk  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for commenting Gary. Yes they are expensive and spare parts if you need them are horrendous but on the other hand the machines will last a lifetime and being very reliable they rarely need spares anyway.

    Good review, definitely agree with the universal motor sentiment. been through 4 dewalt dw788 scroll saws in the last year, the motors just don't hold up with heavy use.

    • @scrimperuk
      @scrimperuk  2 роки тому

      Thank you for your comment Travis. Throughout my many years doing work involving motors I have always found induction motors to be totally reliable and usually outlast the machine they are fitted too; which is not the case with carbon brush type universal motors which often are noisy, vibrate more and have many more parts that wear out such as the armature and brushes.

    Hi John. Thanks for this. I can confirm that an older style Hegner can be transformed by fitting the quick clamp at the front and their quick tension release lever at the rear (it replaces the screwed rod). Hegner charge around £70 for both. They are very easy to fit and work really well for those inside cuts. Thanks. Col.

    Thanks. My scroll saw is from Home Depot but I got away with one. It’s stout & heavy. The only plastic part is the round thingy in the middle of the table that the blade rides through (which I’ve managed to chew up). Changing the blades is a pain (relative to your Hegner) but I’m getting better at setting the blade tension, so I don’t have to replace blades as often. Long live whirligigs.

    • @scrimperuk
      @scrimperuk  3 роки тому

      Thanks Dennis, You could make a new table insert from a piece of plywood or make a supplementary table to go on top. Quick blade change is essential for intricate work with lots of cutouts. What are Whirligigs? Lol

      That is strange. I generally use the Niqua brand from Hobbies (UK) very rarely have any snap.
      I honestly can't understand why they snap in a Hegner and not in another make? I presume you are fitting them in the blade holders correctly?

    • @scrimperuk

      At the prices Hegner charge it amazes me that they are out of stock of those quick clamps, (£28+) it is just a simple item you would think they would switch a couple of machines on and produce a couple of thousand to keep customers happy!
      Have you considered fashioning one your self? I reckon you could fairly easily convert a standard blade holder with a lever, Axminster do a range of locking levers that are around £3.00, it might not be as perfect as the original Hegner one but if I was stuck I would give it a go.
