  • Join us at the Grotto in Portland, Oregon-the most unusual Catholic church I’ve encountered. The Grotto hosts an annual Christmas Festival of Lights that’s one of the most popular holiday destinations in Portland.
The Grotto itself is a sanctuary in a cave that’s been carved out of a giant cliff. An elevator leads to the top of the cliff, and during the day you can go to the top and explore the upper gardens. In today’s video, I’ll first show the annual Christmas Festival of Lights at the Grotto, and then journey up the elevator and show you what’s at the top of the cliff.
The Grotto is in Portland’s NE quadrant. On evenings from the day after Thanksgiving through December 30th, you can attend the annual Christmas Festival of Lights. Here is the website link so you can plan your visit: thegrotto.org/christmas-festi...
Since the Grotto is a Catholic Church, there are a lot of religious displays among the lights, but you definitely don’t have to be Catholic to enjoy the festival.
The Christmas festival features lots of carolers in both outdoor and indoor venues. Since it’s usually cold at the festival, there's hot chocolate available for purchase.
If you visit the Grotto during the day, you can take an intriguing elevator up to the top of the cliff to see the upper gardens. Set back among the gardens is an actual monastery building that’s closed to the public. The upper gardens are filled with monuments. They range from woodland shrines to a meditation chapel that looks like it could be in a Sci-Fi movie set.
The Grotto in Portland is truly an unusual and beautiful place. Thanks for joining us for the Festival of Lights and a walk through the upper gardens. Remember to give this a thumbs-up, and subscribe to our channel, and we’ll see you next time.
