Coal Creek Falls, a Top Rainy Day Hike Near Seattle
Join us on a popular rainy day hike near Seattle that takes in two waterfalls: North Fork Falls and Coal Creek Falls. Along the way, you’ll notice ruins of an old coal mine and town, long-since overgrown by the forest. In today’s video, I’ll share the highlights and how to do the hike yourself.
🔔 If you enjoy this video, remember to give it a thumbs-up and subscribe to our channel! ua-cam.com/channels/jrLA6zf-M8pd6vkJ64hRsA.html
The Coal Creek Falls hike is in Bellevue, on the east side of the Seattle metro area. It’s part of Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park.
Either the Cinder Mine Trailhead or the Red Town Trailhead can be used to access Coal Creek Falls. The hike from the Cinder Mine Trailhead adds about half a mile, but this option adds in the North Fork Waterfall.
When we went (in March 2024), construction was also limiting access to the Red Town Trailhead. Check the latest trailhead conditions before you go.
So, let’s get started on the hike from the Cinder Mine Trailhead. The trail descends through a forest of mostly maple trees, which you’ll find covered in moss and licorice ferns in winter. The path here is wide, packed gravel. Later on, the trail gets more uneven and can be muddy, so some prefer to use hiking poles.
Coal Creek soon materializes along the trail. Water flow is best in the rainy season, and the waterfalls can dry up in summer. This was filmed in early March, when spring leaves and flowers were just beginning to emerge.
You’ll soon come across my favorite waterfall of the two, North Fork Falls.
Signs along the trail share the area’s coal-mining history and help interpret the ruins you’ll see in the forest.
In a nutshell, coal was discovered here along Coal Creek in 1863, and a mining town with the same name soon grew to support the miners. There were bunkers to sort the coal and clean away contaminants, a steam plant to provide power needed to haul coal up from far below the surface, as well as houses and other town buildings for the miners. In many cases, only foundations remain.
The trail crosses the road near the Red Town Trailhead. This is where the construction was when we visited.
There are a lot of interconnecting trails, so I’d recommend downloading the route map on AllTrails to follow along during your hike. Here is the link to the Coal Creek Falls hike entry: www.alltrails.com/trail/us/washington/coal-creek-falls
The hike is 2.2 miles out-and-back from the Red Town Trailhead, or about 2.7 miles out-and-back from the Cinder Mine trailhead.
The Coal Creek Falls hike is fairly popular, so you’ll likely find other hikers along the way, particularly around the falls.

If you can't park at the trail head there is a large, free parking area up the road there so you won't need to park where it says no parking.A paved trail connects the two places.
Guys this place looks and feels so adventurous! Music is brilliant as well
Oh I live to read! I nees to visit!
I want to visit. We don't have volcanoes in England
Looks like fun! I might move to Portland next year
Tiptoe through the window By the window, that is where I'll be Come tiptoe through the tulips with me Oh, tiptoe from the garden By the garden of the willow tree And tiptoe through the tulips with me Knee deep in flowers we'll stray We'll keep the showers away And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight Will you pardon me? And tiptoe through the tulips with me Knee deep in flowers we'll stray we'll keep the showers away And If I kiss you in the garden in the moonlight Will you pardon me? and tiptoe through the tulips with me
Closest hotel to tram?
thanks guys, nice video. next time grab some lunch to take and go up to high bridge, another cool spot. also some nice camping spots too!
absolutely beautiful,my life will mean nothing if i dont make it there😊. I am from Pacifica, CA and Lincoln, OR is just stunning! our beaches come second to these!
You seem like a pleasant person but all the history is missing. I hope your coastline may extend further in the future.
Thanks for your feedback! It’s helpful to know it would be better with more detail on the history included 😊.
It's nice to see that such a wonderful structure is still standing. Quite the opposite of what happened to a trestle that spanned the Wynoochee River in Mason County, Washington. It was burned in the climatic scene of a 1961 movie, "The Ring Of Fire". That scene is here on UA-cam, and the title is "Ring of Fire Train Crash Scene". The wreckage is still in the river all these years later! It's amazing how lax environmental laws were back in the 60's.
Oh wow, I didn’t know about the Wynoochee River trestle! What a major structure to burn down in a movie 😬. Thanks for sharing!
@@AdventuresPNW You're welcome.
Nice and chill video, subscribed 👌
Thanks so much!
Cool vid! We hiked up the quiet beach on the west side of Point Roberts, enjoying the late summer sun. After finally spotting an occupied cabin, we asked "what country are we in?" When they said "Canada", we knew we'd gone too far! Not well marked😂
Haha, that’s fabulous! It is a small area for sure.
I love the spinning glass balls!
Same! I found them super mesmerizing 😊.
Love this. Thanks for sharing. 🌄🏞🏔👍
Thanks so much! 😊❤️
The tram is right above my house
Very cool!
This is my favorite market to explore! We stayed at the Embassy Suites just so we would be able to walk to the market. What a fun place to spend hours shopping and eating. The best part is most everything is handmade and you can find so many unique items!
Very cool! It is fun to see all the creative crafts 😊.
You have a very calm and soothing voice
Thanks so much!! 😊
It looks like a really fun place to explore!
Thanks!! 😊❤️
The parking gaps are insanely wide 😂 could fit a few more inbetween...nah just kidding we dont need any more cars lol... beautiful video ,i wish i could.visit but im the other side of the pond in wales , which i guess is a mini oregon 😊😊
Thanks so much! 😊😀Yeah, the parking was a bit tricky!
Absolute waste of our time. They just dump you off for an hour at an overpriced gift shop. If you sit on the wrong side, there is ZERO scenery from the train itself, and basically you’re just staring a a creek on the other. 45 minutes up, then back, while enduring the lame attempt at humor by the tour guide over the loud speakers. This guy makes Bob Hope look like a genius. He’s as funny as acid rain.
I also anticipated the train ride would be longer (it’s only 3 miles), and that it would spend more time in the Hood River Valley vs in the forest. I’m glad we checked it out, but I also wouldn’t do it again.
Great video as always!!
Thanks so much!! 😊
Planning to check it out on our trip. Thanks for the video!
Great!! Enjoy your trip!
Looks like an amazing place!
Thanks! 😊
The locals have never called it a “witch castle”, because the accused woman and the original house were long dead when the stone structure was built for public use. All you people calling it that are misleading at best. How would you like it if somebody accused YOU of witchcraft.
Interesting, I didn’t know there was ever an actual connection to anything witch-related; I’ve always heard it was just a really cool-looking park bathroom!
My go too place!!!❤
Very cool!
Your voice is so soothing
Thanks so much! 😀
I like oregon grape as well
Very cool! I've never tried Oregon Grape, though I do like the flowers. Do you eat it raw or cooked into other foods?
Thank you for this!! My friend are definitely going to the Salmon Cascades either tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday. 9/26 or 9/27 (2024). We’re heading to ONP tomorrow morning. Sooo excited about this!!! Thank you for posting such a beautiful, informative, clearly explained video. And your voice and the music you used were so calming. Thank you!!
Thanks so much! So glad it was helpful. I hope you have a great trip to ONP!!
SUCH perfect videos!❤️❤️❤️ I get so exhausted with the amped up over the top vlogs. Even the music you’ve chosen is so perfect and actually fits the mood of the landscape. 10/10!!!! ☺️
Thanks so much for your super thoughtful comment! Comments like these motivate me to make more videos 😀
Can't wait to visit!
I can't wait to get there!
So beautiful ! Did you hike down in the dark or camp somewhere
We hiked down in the dark. I’d bring a headlamp next time, though; we just used our phone lights, and it was pretty hard to see!
It's great 👍
Oregon is such an underrated state. Greetings from Europe.
Thanks for your thoughtful note! 😀
Please don't make driftwood forts. They become unstable and are unsafe for kids and dogs that like to go in them.
Very nice video. Which month did you go for the fall color? The Washington side is nice too. Was that the same season as you visited Oregon side?
Thanks so much! We filmed the fall color on the Oregon side at the very end of October. The clips from the WA side are from different seasons. Hamilton Mountain & Beacon Rock are from very early March, Coyote Wall mid-April. Our footage from Dog Mountain is from late June, but the flowers are usually even better if you go earlier in June or in May. I think our Cape Horn footage is from July.
Nice video! Thank you for giving us the date of your salmon run filming. We plan to go in Sept.
Thanks so much! Have a wonderful trip!!
I never rooted for fish before... but that is a lot of work! I'm really hoping we see them at the end of the month!
Very cool! Have a great time!
We will be at Sol Duc towards the last week of September - looks amazing and yes, Salmon Cascades is on our list!
That's awesome! It's a beautiful place 😀
Looks like an elderly women in/on the mountain @2:26
Do you need any sort of parking permit for Cape Flattery. Also any way to cut down the distance to Point of Arches?
Sorry for the slow reply! When we went in 2022, a Makah recreational use permit was required for Cape Flattery ($20), and they could be purchased at the nearby Makah Cultural & Research Center Museum (and a few other places in Neah Bay). I don't know of a way to reduce the distance on Shi Shi Beach/Point of Arches. Have a great trip!
So happy to see Redwoods in Oregon! I knew they exist-just nice to be able to see them in such a lovely video! Thank you
Thanks so much! 😀😀
Your videos are amazing❤
Thanks so much for your super thoughtful comment!! It made my day 😀
Amazing capture of the sunset!
Thanks so much!!
Thank you for showing us the trailhead and most of the trail. I think the views from the top are worth the scramble but stopping where you guys did is okay as well.
Very cool! Maybe someday I'll make the scramble!
Been here many times when i went to Western culinary 20 years ago.. i would always hit ip the cookbook section.
Very cool! It's a fun place 😀
Thank you!
You’re welcome! So glad it was useful 😀😀
Great video and narration.
Thanks so much!! 😊
Thank you so much for this!!! Very good video
Thanks so much!! 😊
