Thank you for posting this. Mal Evans was a true gentleman, a gentle giant. The story is too long to tell here but Mal Evans was truly concerned about the welfare of we younger Beatles fans. Let me just say two friends of mine and I did a very stupid thing in an attempt to get access to "the boys" while they were in Los Angeles. Because of Mr. Evan's actions three foolish 12-year-olds avoided the possibility of being bitten by a rattlesnake and ensured that we did, indeed, briefly meet three of "the boys." I was living in Los Angeles when Mr. Evans tragically shot to death by members of the LAPD due to mental illness. It was heartbreaking. R.I.P. Mr. Evans, the gentle giant.
He was basically the Fab Four's errand boy. There's a photo of him during the shooting of the movie Help, sinking into an ice hole. I suspect none of the Beatles wanted to do this, so Mal volunteered. 😁
Poor guy, completely devoted to the band... apparently his earnings never increased, struggled financially . Sad ending as well, deserved better than that. RIP Mal..👍👍👍

i read somewhere that the beatles never raised mal's salary during his entire tenure with them. mal also appeared in 4 of the beatles' 5 films. and given a speaking part in "help!" i had no idea of the tragedy of his death until relatively recently. oddly, none of the band members attended his funeral but george martin and neil aspinall did. i wonder what that was all about? thanks for video.
I believe you are correct that they didn’t raise his salary and yes very true about the films. The Beatles didn’t attend a lot of even their own family member’s funeral to not make a scene. Paul McCartney didn’t even attend his own father’s funeral

I read his biography earlier in the year - I can thoroughly recommend it - a brilliant read. Mal was one of the Beatles - maybe not the 5th - I reserve that for George Martin - but I’d certainly rank him 6th or 7th - his loyalty to the band, even after their split was remarkable.
I can’t wait to read the book honestly! I just had this conversation in the comments about 5th Beatle or 6th Beatle really hard to say as Martin really helped them push boundaries with the music but Mal gave up his life and own happiness to serve their every need. Thanks so much for watching!
Mal was, is my friend. He just hunged with us, always. He held the drums up for Ritchie in D.C. No one anchored them. He was, is a big lovable teddy boy. It hurts to this day, I miss you.

His provided work mini moved equipment by night. Those were the best years of our lives. What would mcmac give for a do over knowing what we now know? Only George Martin and Brian Epstein could also be considered part of that. That is what I also thought after reading about him in a bio of McCartney. In the end after the band broke up, he was lost emotionally and financially. I think what he did for the band was ethical and professional, but I think he was too focused on them as though he was an actual band member. He wasn't. He was an employee and he failed to prepare himself for the "afterlife" for when the Beatles would break up.
I have a framed copy of the Mr. Kite poster that John Lennon used as inspiration for the Sgt. Peppers song of the same name. I received it as a gift from a house where I'd lived for almost a year. The house was a virtual shrine to The Beatles, chock full of memorabilia, including the Mr. Kite poster. Sadly, the lease on the house was discontinued, and we all had to pack up and move elsewhere. The poster was a parting gift from the leaseholder who owned the assorted memorabilia.
Poor Mal. When his ashes were lost in the mail, John Lennon said "they should look in the dead letter file". His ashes were eventually found in a Heathrow storage room and returned to his family.

I met Mal briefly with Hillary Gerard, May and John and Harry Nilsson at the Riviera Hotel In Las Vegas, In 74. A real gentleman! I still have the photos.

It seems to me that Mal could have cashed in, big time, by writing a book about his close observations of The Beatles. But he was likely far too loyal to the band members to do that. That has to be respected, too.
He was actually in the works of writing a book when he died. That’s not to say we would know what the exact contents would be. I’m pretty sure that it would have been respectful though.
Mal also contributed lyrics to a handful of Beatles songs, including "Here, There and Everywhere"'s final verse: "Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there". He also inadvertently co-created the name of their most famous album, when Paul misheard Mal's saying "salt and pepper" as "Sergeant Pepper"! Oh, and he led the police to the Apple Corp rooftop and started unplugging the band's equipment during their famous concert. The band just plugged their chords back in, and kept playing!

Dear sweet Mal. Contributed in many songs lyrically too but NEVER received any credits putting in words here and there and did EVERYTHING for them. He was treated like shit and was abandoned financially and personally. They left him alone to suffer alone. They didn’t even care !!! The shits .

The Beatles were shockingly negligent towards some of their most loyal supporters. They almost deserved to get screwed by the likes of Dick James and Allen Klein.
@@Alexander-tj2dn I do believe Martin helped them to make better music beyond the capabilities of themselves for sure, but Mal helped in so many other ways that are beyond the music both personally and professionally with little pay. It was his undying loyalty and commitment to them that I honestly believe he sacrificed his own true happiness and his relationship to his own family to help make them who they are!
With all due respect, I can trump all of you. Sir Daniel Day-Lewis (three Oscars if you don't mind) was a roadie for Echo and the Bunnymen back in the day. Also, Lemmy of Motorhead fame was Jimi Hendrix's roadie for a time. But Mal Evans is the most loveable of them all.
I wonder if they didnt raise his salary due to taxation. They took care of his travel, lodging, clothing and food while on tour. I imagine it was a lot more exciting than being at home supporting a family. He made his own choices. In the end he lost all the blessings he could have had. Sorry Mal, you were a dear person, but you served the wrong people. And I say that as a huge fan of the Beatles.
I agree he made his choice and to have a family life and work for The Beatles at the height of their career would definitely be hard to juggle. He was severely loyal to them and put them 1st I believe before his family and his own happiness, that is why when they broke up everything he did for all those years stopped. It also was a contentious breakup and hard to be friendly to one party without looking like your taking sides. So lose lose situation and now lonely and feeling useless only added to his depressed state. Thanks for commenting!
I still don’t accept why none of The Beatles or the inner circle, including George Martin, were there near the end to help Mal Evans in an impactful and meaningful way; especially after all those years of Mal helping them. Yeah, I know Harrison helped a bit financially, but come on… No Excuses!

Poor Mal was a poorly paid gopher. He did so much for the Beatles and they paid him a pittance. When the band hired Allen Klein as their manager to get more money for themselves Mal should have done the same. The Beatles should have known better (pun intended) as they came from working class backgrounds. Totally tragic how his life ended.

Apparently he was shamelessly underpaid by The Beatles, and when the group suddenly broke up, the guy’s charmed life was over. From one day to the next, no more paycheck. We saw a similar dynamic with the death of Brian Epstein. When The Beatles abruptly decided to stop touring, their manager was basically out of a job. Became suicidal. While his death was not ruled a suicide, as with Mal Evans, there are still questions.

It seems to me that Mal could have cashed in, big time, by writing a book about his close observations of The Beatles. But he was likely far too loyal to the band members to do that. That has to be respected, too.
He was actually in the works of writing a book when he died. That’s not to say we would know what the exact contents would be. I’m pretty sure that it would have been respectful though.

Mal also contributed lyrics to a handful of Beatles songs, including "Here, There and Everywhere"'s final verse: "Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there". He also inadvertently co-created the name of their most famous album, when Paul misheard Mal's saying "salt and pepper" as "Sergeant Pepper"! Oh, and he led the police to the Apple Corp rooftop and started unplugging the band's equipment during their famous concert. The band just plugged their chords back in, and kept playing!

Dear sweet Mal. Contributed in many songs lyrically too but NEVER received any credits putting in words here and there and did EVERYTHING for them. He was treated like shit and was abandoned financially and personally. They left him alone to suffer alone. They didn’t even care !!! The shits .
Every musician that played in a Hometown band and then gone on the road has had a Mal Evans who made themselves irreplaceable ! Mal had the Greatest luck in the world UNTIL it ended causing him to spiral into pills and in a stupor getting killed by the police ! Thank You Mal !

With all due respect, I can trump all of you. Sir Daniel Day-Lewis (three Oscars if you don't mind) was a roadie for Echo and the Bunnymen back in the day. Also, Lemmy of Motorhead fame was Jimi Hendrix's roadie for a time. But Mal Evans is the most loveable of them all.

Everything I found on his death said it was an air riffle and YES I do believe it was suicide by cop. He was extremely depressed!
I wonder if they didnt raise his salary due to taxation. They took care of his travel, lodging, clothing and food while on tour. I imagine it was a lot more exciting than being at home supporting a family. He made his own choices. In the end he lost all the blessings he could have had. Sorry Mal, you were a dear person, but you served the wrong people. And I say that as a huge fan of the Beatles.
I agree he made his choice and to have a family life and work for The Beatles at the height of their career would definitely be hard to juggle. He was severely loyal to them and put them 1st I believe before his family and his own happiness, that is why when they broke up everything he did for all those years stopped. It also was a contentious breakup and hard to be friendly to one party without looking like your taking sides. So lose lose situation and now lonely and feeling useless only added to his depressed state. Thanks for commenting!
I still don’t accept why none of The Beatles or the inner circle, including George Martin, were there near the end to help Mal Evans in an impactful and meaningful way; especially after all those years of Mal helping them.

Poor Mal was a poorly paid gopher. He did so much for the Beatles and they paid him a pittance. When the band hired Allen Klein as their manager to get more money for themselves Mal should have done the same. The Beatles should have known better (pun intended) as they came from working class backgrounds. Totally tragic how his life ended.

Apparently he was shamelessly underpaid by The Beatles, and when the group suddenly broke up, the guy’s charmed life was over. From one day to the next, no more paycheck.
We saw a similar dynamic with the death of Brian Epstein. When The Beatles abruptly decided to stop touring, their manager was basically out of a job. Became suicidal.
While his death was not ruled a suicide, as with Mal Evans, there are still questions.
