      Soto isn’t leaving the Bronx; yes to Pete; I assume you meant Roki Sasaki, but he’s not getting posted; not sure Stearns wants to (or should) give a 7+ year megadeal to a 30-year-old pitcher with declining K rates, have to hope Burnes really did rediscover his cutter at the end of the year, as it’s his primary pitch and the one that made him an ace. Snell should be gettable on a shorter deal. (And to the person who said Adames-why? Someone else is going to pay him and let him play SS. And I don’t love the plate skills. Lots of chase, lots of Ks, has pop but the rest of the profile makes me think he won’t age that well.)

      @@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar "Soto isn't leaving the Bronx" - why is that exactly? Soto is a Boras client and he wants the most money. It's not 2004 anymore, the Mets have more money than the Yankees by a LOT, if the Mets come with the biggest offer (which I think they will) Soto's taking it.

      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 2 місяці тому +1

      @@MichaelAngelo-l5s Correct. Walker is a better defender, but at literally the least important defensive position other than pitcher, and he had that injury, as you pointed out. Obliques are even trickier for older players, so I’m not convinced Walker is ever going to produce like he did in 2022-23, because I’m not convinced the power is going to come all the way back. Pete’s power hasn’t diminished; he was just too passive and got behind in counts. Pete’s unusual for a power hitter, in that he doesn’t actually swing and miss that much. His chase rate was also better than average. But he was a little TOO selective, not always recognizing that pitchers were attacking him early in counts. He might also need to take his A-swing a little more often too, even if it results in a few more Ks. The top-end power is still there.

      They won’t get deGrom (who has a no-trade), but if he’s gettable, they should consider it. Fans have short memories. Jake was healthy until May 2021, tried to fight it for two years and finally got TJS, and showed that his skills were still elite when he returned (this is in contrast to Verlander, who won the Cy Young in his first year back, but the underlying skills screamed regression, which is why I HATED that signing). I think Jake has at least 1-2 more ace-like seasons in him, maybe more, and he only has three years left on his deal. If the Rangers want to cut payroll and are willing to take the salary relief without also requiring ridiculous prospect capital, I’d do it. It’s not like the Mets really have high-end position player prospects anyway (sorry, but Luisangel ≠ Ronald-not even close).

    Mets will not make any big name signings. They're cheap; 100% guaranteed they won't sign a name like Soto or deGrom as badly as we need those two IF they're series about a WS Championship.

    • @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar
      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 2 місяці тому

      Soto’s not leaving the Bronx because the Yankees can’t afford not to re-sign him. deGrom’s not a free agent, and he has a no-trade. That said, if the Rangers make him available, and don’t require Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong in the deal (there might be one or two others, but the Mets’ position player prospects are mostly overrated), I would absolutely do it. Jake just had TJS, looked great in his return, he’ll be fine. Should be good to go for the remaining three years on his deal.

      @@69ChevyGarage It’s weird to call a team “cheap” when they’ve had the league’s highest payroll each of the past two seasons. I don’t think they’ll get Soto because the Yankees will be too desperate to keep him, and deGrom isn’t a free agent (as much as I’d love for him to return). I don’t think they’re going to spend like idiots the way they did in 2023 (I HATED that Verlander signing sooooo much), but they’re going to spend, if for no other reason than they have so many players hitting free agency, including most of their pitching staff, and therefore a lot of slots to fill, and they don’t have guys in the minors who can step in right away. They’re going to have to backfill via FA and trades (personally, I hope they don’t ignore the trade market).

      To do that, the Mets would have to be terrible for a while, then draft the next Darryl and Doc. (And the new anti-tanking rules disallow teams from having top six picks in back-to-back years, so even that wouldn’t totally work.)

      I mean in order to do that the Mets would have to tank and be terrible for the next few years so they can get a couple of key guys from high in the draft and then some owners in other organizations will have to be looking to deal away their stars as that's how we got keith and gary. Listen Frank Cashen did a great job building up the 86 Mets and when he got those calls where other teams were looking to get rid of key players he was able to make them come to NY but I think the circumstances in how he did it was important because we're probably not going to be in that same circumstance again. There's one more than one to build a team though!

      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 2 місяці тому

      @ I meant for the season, but if you want to call that a push based on Manaea’s final two months, or even give Manaea the edge, fine. Yamamoto is still better than anyone else the Mets have (and it’s not like the Mets have Manaea right now), *IF* Buehler has actually figured it out, he’s probably at least equal to Severino, and maybe a lot better, and the Dodgers also have a MUCH better bullpen and lineup. The Mets were really fortunate that all their short-term signings worked out as well as they did, and that everyone stayed healthy. I don’t think that’s something you can count on. That doesn’t mean I think they should give Corbin Burnes $300mm, but I also don’t think they can cheap out, either. And by the way, the Dodgers a) paid Yamamoto $325mm, and b) had like two rotations worth of pitchers on the IL. Their situation was out of necessity, not by design. But they’re so ridiculously talented, and their offense got hot at just the right time, that they were able to make it work. I don’t think the Mets can build their roster that way.
