Thank you Richard. After building it, It took me a solid 6 weeks to sand and polish it. A lot of the body had become work hardened. So imagine starting with 80 grit and it would barely cut the stainless. Lol. Eventually once I worked my way up to 1000 grit. It polished on the buffer pretty easily.

Most hammers dont have the power and options to switch out different size air units like the TM Technologies airhammers. Check out Kent Whites website at Tinmantech.com
I always wanted to do it also but never had the time with my prior business. I finally sold my business and switched full time into nothing but metal art work about 8 years ago. This is what I do 7 days a week.. lol
On one off projects like this wallet, I cut everything with a small 4" imitation beverly shear. I've been looking for a used larger beverly shear. Works great for clean cuts.
How expensive do you think to make a solid stainless steel sculpture would be. Not to mention heavy it'd probably be at least a hundred pounds probably more
Hi Kris, sorry I didn't see your question until now. Honestly, solid stainless would be very time consuming. Also extremely heavy, depending on the size. Last I checked stainless was still over $4. Per pound. So you could imagine how expensive it could be.

That's a TM Technologies airhammer. It utilizes different size air units that are easily swapped out from soft hitting up to very hard hitting. I use a large air until for shaping, and a smaller unit for planishing (smoothing out) the metal once I have my desired shapes. Can see more about them at Tinmantech.com ask for Kent White.
I have questions. It may not be in your market but I'm designing stainless water pipes. I'm looking to see just how detailed I can get with it. From this it seems the sky is the limit. Hi Tom, to be honest I usually hit the stainless scrap pile on a lot of these that are one off builds. The local metal supply company had huge scrap piles I'll pick through. The only problem is theres no way to know what grade of stainless I'm getting.
Also I start with 80 grit on the welded areas then worked my way up to 1200 grit before going to the compound on a buffing wheel. It's a ton of work. I had 6 solid weeks working 7 days a week sanding and polishing that piece once it was built.
@@SteveNielsenArt There's a place that I go to and they have an "Artists Corner", lol. I researched enough and found 303/304 is virtually the same, minus a slightly better corrosion resistance. If it's art though...

If I had some heavier equipment rated to shrink and stretch 16ga stainless, I could save myself a lot of time and hard work. But we are talking about 14k for two machines I'd need. Eventually I'll get there. Also once the body was finished, I invested roughly 6 weeks just in metal finishing, sanding, and polishing. Sanding and polishing stainless is 10x more work than aluminum, and work hardened stainless is probably at least twice the work than non work hardened stainless steel.
I know - with your skills and the right tools/machines, it's "just" about making the right drawings aso, but it's still pretty fuckin' nie work. The amount of "barely fish-looking" fish art out there has depressed me over the years, and then this comes up.. Hope (and expect) you also make some good cash by doing this, because the amount of "mommy at home-art" popping up everywhere "for free", is absurd, even though very many people seem to live by the same quality screening as kids getting tattoos: "It's better than I could do it, so I'm happy with it" for a while... Yes I've collected tools and equipment to make building pieces like this possible, but it still took months! Every tool I own was bought and paid for from building art commissions. Many months of donated hours on top of what I agreed to do each piece for, in order to continue learning and growing with each project. I've now been a full time artist for 8 years and I'm finally getting paid what I should. I have a lot of sculptures, that I havent made time to create videos of.
