I interpret the reaction of the internet to wish as "This corporation is devoid of passion for the art that made them big, so if they don't make good stories I'll be the one to put that goddam passion up there where it deserves to be" and I love it so much
I love that the enrirety of the Wish fandom's sole existence is dedicated to fixing the film Kinda gives off a sense of unity and teamwork in a way, yk? Having us all come toguether to have a better glimpse at what could have been great I myself hope to rewrite the movie someday, I even redid two songs already, so yeah
EXACTLY! And I hope that's what people will take away from this entire situation. There's something so powerful about people coming together to tell a story they really believe in 🥹🥹🥹
For real. Like I feel like "let people enjoy things" originally was supposed to be "Hey, maybe leave people alone & don't be a jerk" but instead people are really fixated on the "enjoying" part. And because "someone on Twitter said something snarky about the thing I like on my For You page even though it wasn't directed to me personally" could be taken by someone as that person not "letting people enjoy the thing" it's become a blanket statement of anyone being critical in their own space. Like if someone made a tweet about how much they adored this movie I would not say anything to them, that would be rude. But I'm not "letting them enjoy things" I'm just... not being an asshole to a stranger LOL.
@CalxiysnCaresTooMuch Facts. I think something that the “let people enjoy things” crowd misses is that negative discourse can be even more productive than positive discourse. Examining why this movie doesn’t work can be very insightful towards artists who don’t want to repeat the same mistakes, or who want to take a similar premise and execute it much better. Furthermore, if everyone had the middling “live and let live” attitude instead of the collective passionate negative reaction, would we have received the amazing animatics and fan works based on Wish’s original premise? I don’t think so. Negativity has its place, and considering the negativity towards Wish has been rightfully directed at Disney’s corporate vision and not at the individual artists who worked on this movie, I think it was very well placed here.
Basically it's "don't have any quality standards whatsoever, all things are equal" which is how we get generic/bad films, "art" that is (sometimes literally) garbage etc.
@@fatcat22ableI’m pretty sure we still would’ve had the animatics and fan works based on Wish’s original premise, regardless. People love making fan animations of all kinds of content, even actually good movies.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Yeah I would say the only time I feel like it gets frustrating is when people go out of their way to make someone's day worse that's just enjoying something and expressing that. Like that's not cool, neither side needs to be doing stuff like that. And regardless of whether they're 'right' or not, they will always be wrong if they're being a dick in making their points. I'm not a big fan of people being overly negative or contrarian for no reason, when it's founded I get it but sometimes people can take it too far. We tow the line between constructive criticism and personally motivated hate when that's happening. Internet cynicism is rampant too, important to keep in mind that it's hard for people to read negativity 24/7 (look at how unhealthy people chronically on platforms like twitter are because of constantly doomscrolling and feeling social pressure to post in support of all possible negative world events punctually). But outside of that, negative commentary has its place and it's not really my place to be mad about it. I can disagree, but I think that's also different. More people need to learn that disagreeing != hate. And that's for both the people disagreeing and the people being disagreed with.
Disney animated movies are supposed to be for Families. That does NOT mean made for 'kids'. It means something that can be enjoyed by children AND their parents. If the adults can't enjoy the movie it's no longer for 'families'. I Hate the rhetoric 'it's made for kids' or 'it's not that deep' cause I feel that only works for stuff Actually made for toddlers or super young children. Even then you need to be aware of what lessons your telling to children. If its for children it should have More thought put into it.
I totally agree. And that's why it's so great when you grow up and rewatch the movies again, because you're able to remember how you felt as a child and watch in real-time how your opinions about the movie changes with age. If you make a movie that impacts children AND adults, the movie will stick with that child as they became an adult for sure!
So many of the old Disney movies were so good because they had all those different subtextual meanings that people could debate about like "does this intentionally have queer subtext or is it just a fun coincidence?" or such, meanwhile with wish you have to read into it too deep like that just to even find a meaning in the first place.
Yeah that's something I noticed as well - like when I walked away from the movie I had an IDEA of the message/moral or what they were trying to say, but that was me being really generous. The movie barely has one meaning they're trying to convey, never mind multiple meanings.
@@quangamershyguyyz7166media SHOULD have layers. The outter layer would be the easy to read moral and message and the inner layer would be the things we think harder about to see and relate to (things hidden in metaphor or themes or just less obvious). So yes. Technically you are correct. But with Wish you cannot glean anything from the outter layer. What’s the message? Don’t trust any authority ever because even if they appear benevolent they’re evil? Soooo… sorry kids don’t trust your parents who (should!) have your best interests at heart?? It’s a bad message. That kind of message needs WAYYYY more nuance to work and cannot be the outter level message. It’s too deep. But then what is the outter layer message? There isn’t one. There is no single quick little one liner that describes the most basic message of this movie and that’s because it’s a mess of ideas with no execution
@@quangamershyguyyz7166Sure, the point is that it’s supposed simple to figure out when you watch the movie and think a bit, with wish you have to piece it together like a log from a wood chipper
I have a feeling people on social media have regressed to this mindset of "Criticizing something such as a movie makes us a hater just to be a hater", as if we don't have legit opinions.
Exactly! And my argument toward that is also going to be: Okay, if someone is just being a hater, it's still an important skill to tell the difference between someone mindlessly hating and bad faith and what actual criticism is. Like we can't completely get rid of people who are acting in bad faith, all we can do is equip people with the tools to tell the difference. I think the problem is people don't want to have to do that lol, like that's a media literacy skill in of itself too 😂
Well, the problem is that there is hate for the sake of hate, for example people who have not even seen the movie and mention that "Asha wants all the wishes to be returned" when her goal is to return them or romanticize an obvious villain just to hate the movie...
@@isaac_senkai That's kind of what I was saying about how some people's neutral/negative opinions over the movie are dumbed down just b/c people interpret it as some of us hating the movie for the sake of it, not realizing that _maybe_ there's some legit reason for those opinions. As for other people not seeing it in theaters, the blame goes to Disney themselves for not only choosing a release date that isn't entirely realistic (during the _week of Thanksgiving_ in North America mind you) but also not bothering to advertise the film outside of social media and UA-cam (though at least unlike the last animated movie by Disney meaning "Strange World", the merch for Wish wasn't limited primarily to the Disney Store). That whole "holiday months = blockbuster" mentality of Disney doesn't always work.
I hope you don't mind me doing a mini-rant myself about "Wish": (Before I start, I question why they didn't finish "Gigantic," a fairy tale musical set in Spain, or at least use the same team for "Wish" once it was cancelled.) 1. Asha is a disappointment in almost every way. She doesn't learn or grow her perspective like Judy Hopps, Anna, Pocahontas, Raya, etc. She's just always right, and she's "quirky" in such a cringey way. The hybrid art doesn't make her dress look as good if it was 100% 2D or 3D, and I wish they kept the orange color instead of purple like Rapunzel and Isabela Madrigal. Plus the braids seemed very modern and Sub-Saharan African to me (not an expert, but that's just my vibe)--plus look up "Aida" from the Disney Broadway play. They also have her with braids and a purple outfit in one of her performances. Not to mention her family is poorly fleshed out, from her mom's mystery wish to her dad influencing her despite not having a significant presence in the film, to her grandfather whose life before Rosas is never explained. My ideal version of Asha would've perhaps paid more homage to her Amazigh heritage--or make her Romani, since Spain has the highest Romani population in Europe and it'd be a good Esmeralda callback--an orange dress (or a red one; see complaint #6), as well as making her a little bit older and mature, maybe even shy--or a pessimistic person who sees the fairy tale life as a front and unattainable. Nevermind the story gives her better writing than having plot armor to defeat the king who can shapeshift, alter/erase memories, and has a magic mirror. 2. Magnifico and Amaya are poor imitations of what they could've been. Magnifico was originally a good guy while Amaya was a villain (as confirmed by Amaya's VA), followed by a villain couple, followed by a bland good guy Amaya and a lackluster villain Magnifico. A lot of people want a classic villain, but I want a new Disney antagonist, one who isn't a villain per se, but whose perspective is at odds with the protagonist so they can both grow. Just like Gaston paralleled the Beast and Lady Tremaine paralleled Cinderella (at least in the 2015 remake), allow Magnifico and/or Amaya to represent a broken hero, someone who lost their way but still learned a lesson that they took to extremes. 3. The Teens, while a good reference to the 7 dwarves, are WAY too many characters for one film to characterize properly. Conflate Hal with Dahlia, Dario with Safi, and Gabo with Simon, or something like that; just give us a smaller friend group to flesh out and explain their own motivations and wishes. 4. Star not being here feels like Disney continuing the backlash they used to get for their female lead always having romance. Asha and Star could've been a couple--heck, I LOVE the idea of Star being Magnifico and Amaya's son (think Hercules, Elsa, and Rapunzel vibes) and thus being the bridge between the protagonists and antagonists. 5. GIVE US COLOR! Everything was so pale, despite "Sleeping Beauty" (who's opening number shows an array of bright colors) being an inspiration. If everyone is pale after giving up their wishes, that works, but restore it when they get their wishes back/granted, explaining Asha's vibrant color palette. 6. The story is boring. Take inspiration from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" for Asha training under Magnifico, learning magic and understanding his worldview while she teaches him her own (and give them the Mickey/Yen Sid color palettes). Perhaps include "The Pink" and "The Fisherman and His Wife"--you know, fairy tales about wishing? Maybe even rip off "Shrek 2" by making Magnifico a fairy godfather with Asha as his apprentice, which helps the ending make more sense. Let Asha grant a wish against Magnifico's advice and race to fix it before potentially destroying the kingdom. Mix elements of "Kingdom Hearts" and "Enchanted" for good measure, perhaps with some good sassy jokes like "The Emperor's New Groove." 7. The music needs a retool. Based on what Jennifer Lee and Julia Michaels have said, Disney did her a disservice. While I'd have enjoyed Lin-Manuel Miranda or the Anderson-Lopez team to do the music (I love them for "Frozen," but Disney should give them other musicals, too), Julia being a pop/radio writer doesn't automatically disqualify her from writing music for a Disney film. Just let her and Benjamin Rice have more time to write the songs during production and come up with unique sounds and lyrics (Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eillish feel like good inspirations for a mainstream sound, personally).
@@onceuponahair20 Honestly we could've gotten a better movie, but it seems Disney didn't know what they wanted to do and then rushed their creatives; "This Wish" was made before the script and Julia said they only had one storyboard to work off of. Given how "Frozen 2" went through troubled production, I'm unsurprised that "Wish" ended up being a fallen star.
Thank you for giving your thoughts! Don't worry, I have a veeeeeery similar rant about these things that I want to make eventually. Like I have 11 pages of notes and what you said isn't too far off from how I feel, so I think you'll be vindicated lol. Particularly with Asha, I feel like this movie is really strange. Because the story book opens with a lore dump about Magnificio and it sort of frames him weirdly as the main character for some reason. I also feel like they had something really interesting to explore with Asha and her father - like they mention Magnificio knew Asha's father and that her father was a philosopher. To me that set off alarm bells as "philosopher = intellectual" and I thought it was going to be revealed that Magnificio killed him or something, since that happens in a lot of real world dictatorships. But they didn't go anywhere with that, or anywhere with anything. Ideally in my rewrite I'd want Asha to have magic all along and either be a candidate for Magnificio's apprentice, or that be something that's a secret. Then when Asha wishes upon the star, Starboy teaches her how to really hone her magic. Then she would go through this arc where she feels like she can't win without Starboy (like in the chase scene where she's panicking about the wand), but the magic was within her all along. Then at the end of the movie she would be pairing people up to make their wishes come true, and giving them a little extra help. Because what's weird about this movie is that in the background characters explicitly say "We didn't need Magnificio, we could make our wishes come true all along" but then they make Asha a fairy godmother which goes against that message. Instead of the idea that a fairy godmother helps to make people believe in themselves, and doesn't just solve everyone's problems. I have a lot of beef with this movie LOL
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Asha really feels like she has stuff handed to her. Her actually having magical potential would explain better how she became a potential candidate to be Magnifico's apprentice, though I'd also like to see her interact with the townspeople so it feels like she knows them on a personal level rather than her being a random tour guide who only interacts woth them for work. I forget Asha's dad was a philosopher, and I feel like they only mentioned that for the "aha! It's a star-related field"-type thing. I'd enjoy him being a mystic, something more magical than scientific to explain an ethereal connection to the stars. Magnifico says weird things that don't make sense to me ("I got these genes from outer space") and in his castle, he also has the zodiac symbols that harkens back to the Evil Queen's mirror. It's kind of weird to me that they lean into an almost sci-fi angle with people studying science and the natural aspect of the stars when the setting is deliberately fantasy. And yeah, Magnifico points out that no one wants to work hard for their dreams and then the citizens blame it on him like he just forced them to give up wishes. And Cinderella's fairy godmother said "even miracles take a little time" and "if you'd lost all your faith, I wouldn't be here," so Asha becoming a cure-all and basically the next Magnifico was pretty counterintuitive.
YEAH THAT REALLY CONFUSES ME LOL. Like... if my mere existence prevents people from enjoying the thing they like, I wonder if they really like it lol. No one has ever changed my mind about something I've genuinely loved, but people have changed my mind about things that I felt sort of torn about.
@@AbrasiousProductionsThere’s not really such thing as objectively bad media. You either enjoy something or you don’t, and the quality lies in how much enjoyment you get from it.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Ben Croshaw did a video about this, too. People assume he hates video games because most of the ones he reviews get mostly criticism from him. He brought up the same notion that maybe the reason people are hurt by not having their opinions validated is that their true feelings towards a game might be closer to his than they want to admit.
I like your point about consuming mindlessly. Not only does it allow big companies to continuously serve us slop, it also discourages aspiring artists and writers from trying because nothing they ever make will be appreciated by people who genuinely care. Mindless media consumption is also dangerous. Just Imagine how many problematic messages, propaganda, etc. can be spoon-fed to us if we viewed everything with neutrality and took everything at face value instead of trying to dig a little deeper. Personally, the feeling I get from people hating Wish isn't angry hate, it's disappointment hate. A lot of us artists, animators, writers, were inspired by Disney's older stuff, and to see their fall from grace is saddening. We WANT to like things, but it's really hard to do so when you care enough to realize how soulless their recent projects have become.
This mindset is so important to me. I will rail endlessly on works I actually love deeply but have major flaws, because I care so much about the finished product. The stuff I actually hate? I tend to just ignore since it's not even fun for me to analyze the failure of something that I don't want to engage with.
EXACTLY. That's really what I want people to take away from this. When I actually hate something and think it's totally trash, I don't even think about it. But I do care about Wish genuinely - it may seem like hate on the surface but this movie does resonate with me in a strange way.
THIS! I criticize this thing BECAUSE I love it and see how much potential it has - if I can't analyze and engage with something, then I, personally, am not enjoying it! it's perfectly okay to love something while also seeing and recognizing the flaws it has!
The way I see criticism of my favorite stuff is like watching people talk about what's good or bad about a recipe before trying it. Like for example, a repeated criticism in your Hazbin videos seems to be that some of the lyrics were over cooked, but I like crispier cookies, so I can admit that like "yeah, that part did try a bit too hard to be clever." but still think it's good.
That's a great point too! There are songs for me that are like that too where I'm like "this is technically questionable but I still like it" but having the knowledge of the mechanics allows me to pinpoint why, despite the flaws, I'm able to appreciate it!
I was always rooting for the movie & didn't hate it because I was so excited as it was the first classic Disney movie set in my country Spain. I been wanting a Spanish princess since forever. I loved they set it in Al-Andalus time which is a big period of the history of our country which is never represented in Hollywood. I loved the fact they decided to do Asha Afro Iberian. I didn't like how generic they made some stuff in the movie like I wish (pun intended) they would have given her a romantic partner it could have been so great if the King & Queen had a Prince who Asha ends up with. Also I would have loved a more authentic & Ethnic soundtrack inspired by Flamenco music & the cast should have been Iberian people they didn't care about us when literally there are names like Rosalia, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem & Antonio Banderas who could have & should have voiced the characters. I feel it was such a loss opportunity & the main reason why the movie tanked so bad in my country especially.
Thank you so much for your thoughts! Yeah that's something I have a lot of personal issue with - I think it was very disrespectful that they didn't have music representative of the culture they were trying to portray. It feels so wrong of them to use Spain as a setting and not give the opportunity to up-and-coming musicians that could make an authentic soundtrack.
I think bad stories inspire us more than good stories (I know it’s true for me) because with good stories there’s nothing we want to change but with bad stories we can choose what we like and rewrite the story off of a prewritten base to create something new. Wish has inspired many people to create their own stories and I love the creativity of the Wish fandom.
Yeah I totally agree. A good story will inspire me too, but definitely not to the same extent. I love brainstorming about what I’d fix while keeping the most plot in tact as possible! Like a patch-work sort of thing.
the irony is not lost on me that the villain (disney) says that he cannot grant the wish of inspiring people (won't create new fairy tales/stories to inspire future generations) while continuously granting the wishes of the people to ensure that they stay happy and placated (instead creating content that only exists for consumption and to keep the corporation running), only to then be overthrown by an underdog group that inspired themselves to ask for more than this (the fandom and internet collectively creating their own stories, art, songs, characters and more, while disney loses millions at the box office). (long ramble incoming, apologies) as someone who has genuinely not stopped thinking about this movie and its concepts since it came out, I absolutely love this video and the analysis you put behind it. I never put two and two together that fairy tales really have been told for centuries and are, at their core, from the people, but it makes so much sense. that's why disney's stories stick in the public conscious because they not only reflected the time period, culture, and thinking of the era, showing us that, at the end of the day, the interpretations may change, but the message and humanity still speak and ring true. these stories were created by the people and for the people. they still stay with us despite the years and now century that have past because of the humanity and love poured into them. something disney now clearly does not understand is that you will always haters. you cannot appeal to everyone - attempting that is only going to end up in pleasing no one. art will always comment on/challenge/criticize something because it was created by a human with experiences and influences based on the time of its creation. like you talked about with beauty and the beast, even if the movie wasn't ABOUT the aids crisis, you can absolutely still interpret it through that lens because of the creators behind it and the story they tell. and from the few interviews and videos we do have of the wish creators, as well as the art book and its concepts, they clearly did have an idea and passion for it that just got whittled down by corporate interference and capitalism. (I truly cannot wait for those NDAs to expire because I need to hear about the production issues that went on behind the scenes for this one - I need an HBO documentary, a dozen UA-cam analyses, and all of the Twitter threads.) it also absolutely delights me that in all of the disney mediocrity of the last few years, new creators, artists, writers, and fandoms have emerged and found success. after the train wreck of Mulan 2020, I found an entire community of AAPI creators who I've been following since and introduced me to so many stories I wouldn't have known about otherwise. and now, with Wish 2023, I've found some incredibly talented creators and awesome channels (such as yours) that have introduced me to music composition, fairy tale history, story creation, character creation, and more. it's so cool to see how this disappointing movie has inspired so many people and launched amazing works. anyway, fantastic video as always, calxyin! I'm so glad you cared so much about wish that you created your channel because your videos have been wonderful! I'm so proud to be apart of this little fandom and I cannot wait to see it continue to grow! (also, I know this is just words from a stranger on the internet, but I'm so sorry about your grandpa. thank you for sharing photos of him with us; I lost my own and know that saying I'm sorry can only do so much. I know it must not have been easy to keep putting out videos with everything going on, but I hope the good vibes and thoughts I'm sending your way help in some way!)
I loved Wish actually but I agree they should’ve stuck with the original concept AND they could’ve done Star as well as Starboy in one move. Make Starboy transform into Star when they’re traveling so he gets to the destination faster. We get a cute boy and the kids get the star plush. Although I loved Star as well cause of how cute he was anyway but I would’ve loved to buy some Starboy merch as well like it’s not that difficult
OR we can keep both Star and Starboy coexisting by having star be like Starboy’s lil partner. So it’s like Peter Pan and Tinkerbell’s dynamic. Plus, when Asha and SB are paired, The goat boy can be paired with the star
Yeah I totally agree! There's no reason why the Starboy couldn't shapeshift and then they could have sold a full sized doll (like a Starboy ken doll) AND THE PLUSHIE. I have no idea why they left that money on the table!
my autistic hyperfixation for seeing people fix this movie has a death grip on me LOL I'm utterly enthralled by peoples passion on making their own ideas for this film. because of all the POTENTIAL, it's story/setting had! it's not a bad thing to channel that "hate" into something productive! we lost something that could've been AMAZING! so now we're all like "let's make our OWN wish come true!" it's not necessary "hate" for this movie. It's more like "disappointment coupled with a ton of creative inspiration" like how we have fanfics, fanarts, and other kinds of AUs in other media! Thanks for coming to my (jumbled and unorganized) Ted Talk! xD
I also hate the sort of spinoff of "let people enjoy things" after a critical video blows up: "a youtuber gave you that opinion." It always causes the biggest eyeroll from me. Genuinely, I think this problem would be a lot less prevalent if people could accept that there's a difference between "I liked this" and "this was good."
YEAH THAT REALLY BOTHERS ME TOO. My hope is that someone would say "Calxiyn didn't give me this opinion, she gave me the knowledge about songwriting I didn't have so I could formulate my own opinion" - like sometimes people just parrot what they hear but I hope, more often, that I can teach people something.
Seeing Asha so Happy amd confident on a thumbnail saying The power of being a hater" is... I think Asha is also disappointed and angry at her own movie. She deserved better. She deserves better writers!
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Oh.. But I still think that she's unhappy with her own movie. I mean she's just the skin. I mean the only flaw she has is getting late and being naive and she doesn't know what she wants while in most disney movies the protagonist knows what they want. I mean yeah caring for others is good but what does she self want? I mean Rapunzel wants the best for her kingdom but she self wanted to find her own destiny. Mirabel wanted the best to her family but the she wanted recognition. Asha doesn't have anything she wants wich is a shame. The only good thing is her song (greek version of course) the hair, and her dress. It may not be historical accurate but it's still beautiful. Man they did EVERYONE dirty and destroyed so many good choices. Rip star boy, Rip evil couple, Rip 2D animation and Rip evil cat that I think has a name
It's a bummer that Wish wasn't good because I remember watching the trailer a lot and thinking wow this looks great Disney might actually be back and nah the opposite happened, maybe I'll watch Wish eventually but I'm not rushing to check it out
When I saw the trailer, I knew immediately that the hybrid art style (as usual) was gonna bother me. I prefer 3D or 2D--or one with elements of the other. Instead of feeling like a fairy tale, it felt like unfinished CGI. Plus "This Wish" was performed at D23, and given how vague it was lyrically, I wasn't amazed when they played it during the trailer.
Yeah I only waited until it was on Disney+ (which is basically "free"), I wouldn't recommend paying for it if you don't already have Disney+ access. In the future I want to do a scene-by-scene type review/rewrite because I still have a LOOOOOOT to say LOL
Me too, I really wanted to like it and, to be completely honest, I don’t think it fully deserved all the hate it got (Was it bad? Yes. Was it the worst movie I’ve ever seen? No.) But after seeing that first trailer I really was expecting something so much more creative and original, especially music wise! Why on earth didn’t they hire Alan Menken or at least LMM?!
@@jamiegdubois yeah from what I'm hearing Wish wasn't trash it was just invre disappointing and lackluster, like I said I'll watch it eventually but after seeing a lot reactions including y'all I'm definitely not rushing to watch it Lol
It's the principal of it. It wouldn't be the same if Wish was a regular Disney movie. We would have deemed it meh and moved on. But it's specifically because of the type of movie Wish is and what it represents that makes it so disappointing and fun to clown on. It is literally Disney's 100th anniversary celebration movie. Something we've been waiting all our lives for. Disney was king. It was a paragon of amazing stories, songs and animation. Quality in almost everything it did. And you would think, for it's 100th anniversary, Disney would put some actual effort into it's celebration movie. But they didn't. It's honestly a betrayal of the fanbase and themselves, and everything Disney built and stood for.
I feel like you would enjoy reading the paper I wrote for my animation history class. It is about why animation and fairy tales work so well together and create these "definitive" versions. Edit: also as a follow up, I think it is very important to emphasize that not only were these stories written by peasants originally, but mainly PEASANT WOMEN. They have such happy endings and love as such a theme because of that. For most women, especially peasants, this was their way to envision a better life for themselves and their daughters. These stories were frequently told while doing chores. So while you wove, your older women told these oral stories to pass the time and make it more fun. Stories of "wouldn't it be nice to be richer? Would it be nice to have a lover who truly cared for you?" To hate on these stories for these qualities shows a classist undercurrent because it fails to understand the privilege we have now of not having to worry about an arranged marriage or being forced to stay in a loveless marriage. We can marry whomever we wish and (for now), leave if that marriage is not what we wanted. Those women couldn't so their dreams reflect that. You can change that if you wish, but do not mock these women of days past for only having that idea of "wouldn't it be nice if my husband truly loved me." That was their escapist fantasy. You have enough that you can dream bigger. Be glad for that.
LITERALLY POP OFF! I plan to talk about that more when I eventually cover Cinderella etc, but fairytales were as feminist as they could have gotten back in that time, in a sense. Cinderella is that wish fulfillment story of being able to be higher status but also fall in love. Women have a very underappreciated role in the creation of fairytales or other folk stories, and you can see in some of the stories how they weren't just about bagging the man (which there's nothing wrong with that either) but actually about their daughters and the horrors of the world lol. Like think about Rumpelstiltskin - this father LIES to the King about his daughter being able to weave straw into gold, and so she has to make a deal with the devil just to keep up that lie. It all works out in the end because she's clever enough to find Rumpelstiltskin bragging in the woods but like... the implication of this is that she didn't really love the King (probably lol), but ended up marrying him. But that she did love her daughter and that's what Rumpelstiltskin wanted her to give up. The girl in the story is treated terribly by men - her own father trades her to a King, the King is going to kill her in some versions if she doesn't weave the straw into gold, Rumpelstiltskin uses her bad situation to pressure her into a bad deal. She could have easily given her daughter away and not have thought twice about it now that she was a princess and had "the good life". But in the end, she fights to keep her daughter and she breaks the cycle of her terrible father.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch I know in my research, I ran into this entire theory that there are so many female fairies as a way to sort of... represent the storyteller in a way and thus be the one to grant these characters the things they wanted. It was a super fascinating idea that basically, the self-insert wasn't the lead, but rather the all powerful being that changes the course of the story. They also tied it into old pagan beliefs and goddesses which I personally thought was a stretch (by the time many of these ideas were really becoming more common elements, it was the nobility adding that in and later into the process. By that time, most pagan beliefs, especially in the French circles, were not really remembered that much.), but it was at least an interesting idea.
As someone who’s progressively grown more and more resentful of disney since 2013 I take some enjoyment in seeing them continue to fail more and more often than not
"let people enjoy things" is a valid sentiment, but i think we should also "let people criticize things" because it gets so tiring to go into comment sections from videos reviewing animation and see a bunch of people going "why do you care" and "it's for children". Animation studios did not become multibillion dollar corporations by making mediocrity and we have the right to point it out when they do
Children deserve good movies and TV. Just cause it'd for children doesn't mean it doesn't need to be well made (I'm not saying this as a rude statement, Thought I should make that clear so it doesn't get taken the wrong way.)
I feel about Wish the same way I did about Cats 2019. I hated it so much that i became fixated by it and felt a need to analyze every detail to figure out the how and why it was put together (i think part of it is trying to figure out how someone could willing make something like that, feel its appropriate for release, and then expect the world to not criticize something). I love the fact that I hate Wish because it means something in there connected with me and i want figure out what it was and how I would do it.
Thank you so much! There may be a few more videos in between until we get there but I do plan on covering all the songs eventually... at least by the time the year is over LMAO
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch I also can't wait for your criticism of Whatever It Takes. I say that, because I personally like the song, but I also like hearing other people's opinions, positive or negative.
I just watched the video. Normally I don't comment on videos like this but I want to say that this was a well-constructed video. It's very symbolic how people today are reinventing an original story by Disney, who are known for reinventing/retelling/adapting stories that have been told by the people... I guess you can say we're taking the power back? Haha! P.S. My condolences to you and your family, and may your grandfather rest in peace.
Thank you so much! That's exactly the message I wanted people to take away from this video - it's our fairytale now! There's so much power in that, and I suspect we will start to see some original stories published that are veeeeeeeeery similar to Wish but are changed enough that Disney won't be able to like, sue or something lol. One way or another this is going to become the people's fairytale as well! And thank you, I really appreciate your condolences 💜
Pretty ironic that Wish has succeeded in its goal of inspiring people to hope and dream and create, just not in the way it was expecting to XD Also if the "let people enjoy things" sayers were actually true to their beliefs, they should have absolutely no problem with letting someone enjoy critiquing a piece of work they found lacking, methinks. There can be a lot of catharsis found in ripping something you dislike apart and figuring out why it's not working for you, as I'm sure we're all a testament to by now. The Internet really looked at Wish, put their foot down and went "no, we have higher standards, and you're going to need to try harder than that" and I could not be prouder of us for it
Disney's animated movies have always been such a huge part of my life, and really helped shape me as a writer and casual artist. I was rooting for Wish to be a worthy celebration of their centennial, and then really upset when it turned out to be such hot garbage. But I've since come to think that my wish (heh) was granted, after seeing all the amazing creators online giving us their own versions of the story.
I actually didn't hate wish BUT it didn't wow me either. I thought it was just ok. I am sad they dropped the possible Starboy/Asha romance though. It could've been cute. It is what it is though, and for now tangled remains my favorite Disney movie(and series) ever with frozen right behind it. Also I heard that kh music in the background, good choice.
I’ve seen so many retellings of wish, and every time I think “man, I wish this could be the real thing” but I never stopped to think that those retellings ARE real, they are living breathing stories that people are sharing in the same way our ancestors did with oral storytelling. What a beautiful and mind blowing observation
I rlly want a remake of Wish not live action but 2d animated with all the original concept arts like starboy and the villain couple hell if that were to happen we would be so happy but they most likely will leave this movie to gather dust while we the audience dream that this movie could've been better.
Honestly it gives me no pleasure to hate this movie. I wanted this movie to be good. I wanted it to be what it was supposed to be: a celebration of 100 years of a company that made my childhood years very happy. But unfortunately, all it turned out to be was a bland and mediocre mess with every problem Disney is suffering from right now. And what pisses me off more in regard to it is that it didn’t need to be this way. From the concept art and original ideas we’ve heard was the original plan, this movie could have been something very special. But unfortunately it again is a movie that symbolizes everything wrong with Disney nowadays and their never ending stubbornness to fix its problems.
Yeah, I totally agree. What really strikes me is how they talked about the development of the movie purely in terms of looks and needing something for the 100th anniversary. It's like... okay, but where was the theme? Where was the story? Everything was about appearances and the movie didn't even look that great 😅😅😅
I think the worst thing about projects like these that have potentnial but end up a fail is imagining what it would be like to be one of the creatives. It's not the artists fault that Wish is like this so picture having to just work on this movie knowing what was scraped, knowing what it could have been and letting it fall through your fingers because it's ultimately up to the higher ups.
My favorite part of wish was when i misheard magnifico saying “how cute” to star, I thought he said “f*ck you” 😂 That’s the only way I can hear it now Also you always have the best outfits 👌✨
As for 'was the company telling them what to do': Recently watched a vid about apparently just that happening over at Pixar. That the execs said to NOT tell personal stories anymore, but stick to 'biggest possible mass appeal'
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch that's exactly the vid (i had to dive through my history to find who made it again Dx ) But yeah. It's like... isn't that what almost completely bankrupted several entertainment industries and got so many hows cancelled?
LOL We totally are. I have so many thoughts about this but I feel like the middle class is slowly disappearing and we are back to "peasants" and "the wealthy". And it's interesting how UA-cam and TikTok is giving a voice to us "peasants" lol.
My honest opinion is that Wish isn’t necessarily a bad movie, it’s just a _lazy_ movie. ESPECIALLY as Disney’s 100th anniversary film. Had they released it any other year, I feel like people wouldn’t have cared as much and wouldn’t have hated on it as much. Disney literally built up everyone’s expectations so high for a movie that was just so, _so_ lacklustre. It almost feels like someone went into a drawer of scrapped movie scripts, blindly picked one, sprinkled in some Disney Easter eggs and just said, “that’ll do”.
Yeah I agree with that as well - when you think about it, if it wasn't the 100th anniversary they probably also wouldn't have jammed in so many references to other movies. If they weren't so focused on making it feel like a 100th anniversary it may have felt less... cringey I guess. Like all the references to the other movies made me roll my eyes cause it just wasn't very natural lol. That's the biggest thing (other than the songs) that I don't think is going to age very well, because as time goes on it's going to get even more jarring compared to the other movies. If they had just tried to make a good movie instead of a "100th anniversary moment", like they did for Tangled being the 50th released animated film, it would have probably been better.
@@13sinra13 If that’s the case, then fair enough to the musical theatre writers, but it bothers me that there was a time crunch in the first place. You would think this would be the type of project they should have given themselves plenty of time to work on (although I guess you could argue covid might have interfered?j
This is the first disney movie openly based on the mediterranean and it doesn't even look mediterranean at all. As a Spaniard that's what bothers me. Recently they've been putting in more effort with this stuff, but in here they just thought slapping him horseshoe arches here and there and some little references was good enough. This is an island in the mediterranean, but it looks atlantic. The climate, the fauna, the flora, the stone of the buildings or even most of the structures don't look "medieval mediterranean island" at all. That is a mountain everything, but it's somehow directly touching the sea. It makes sense because in the original concept those were forests meant for the mountain. But it was a disappointing misrepresentation. Even raya did it better and the put all those cultures in a slushie of whatever looks more asian. This doesn't even look mediterranean. You can like it, doesn't mean it's not disappointing and lacking in all the ways the recent movies that were already lacking aren't. And as a mediterranean it's especially disappointing. That's why old disney movies used very vague europeanish settings instead of compromising and then coming short. I didn't care about this movie, but from the trailer it looked aesthetically bland in a way I knew it shouldn't be, so I really don't care that it's terrible in terms of plot or whatever else. But the mediterranean setting was part of the marketing and premise and the only things that looks and feels particularly mediterranean and not generic or confused are magnifico and amaya and those random horseshoe arches.
I'm an art history minor and Rosas's architecture is historically accurate for a Moorish country. It would've worked better if Rosas were an ancient kingdom, as the audience would go, "Oh, that arena came from the Romans, that tower was part of a mosque that got repurposed into a church by Crusaders, etc."
Thank you for making this video! I have been feeling the same about Wish and I finnaly understand how i feel about Miraculous ladybug. (Hear me out-) While Mlb right now is at a stand still with production. This and Wish are kinda in the opposide sides of the scale. Everybody loves wish and wantwd more..sp they made it!Its honestly so refreshing to see a actual starboy. Disney has been declining and now theres a actual spark,I couldent be happier. Miraculous on the other hand is similar..we make fix its and animatics all the time. But they got tired of waiting. Its washy and though we love creating because of thier flaws. There is a bitterness to it. Thankfully the paris special came out to give us faith.
I watch Miraculous Ladybug on my other channel (or at least, I used to) and I totally feel that for Miraculous lol. Like it's such a cool concept but it's been sort of bogged down by how long they've stretched it out, so now people are trying to make similar rewrite content to tighten up that sort of thing lol.
Also where are the bad wishes. Like what if Asha sees a wish for something terrible to happen and is like “OHHHH!!!! The king has a valid reason not to grant some wishes!”
I think it's more interesting if the bad wishes don't actually exist but Magnificio is just paranoid about people becoming more powerful than him. But they'd have to establish that wishes are always "good" (like that they come from the heart and what not).
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuchI think the concept could work if they differentiate between a “wish that comes from heart” and a “flight of fancy”, the latter being more destructive. Also that, most people don’t know what they really want, they think they want A thing but instead want B thing, like for example someone who thinks they want revenge for the death of a loved one but no what they actually want is to have them back, but because that’s impossible revenge is the next best thing; or someone who thinks they want power, but what their heart really wants is safety and companionship, but power is what they believe will give them those things, even if it doesn’t as power often attracts danger and isolation.
@@melaniey.5596 They established this in the prologue and the first wish chamber scene. Asha and Magnifico outright say, "Not just any wish. The one that drives your heart. The one that makes you who you are. People think that wishes are just ideas. But no, they are a part of your heart. The very best part." Also, the people's hearts glow when they wish during the final battle.
It could have been better. For some reason the only songs I remember are the demo version for At All Costs, the villain song version of This Wish from Lydia the bard and the fan song for if both Amaya and Magnifico were the villain power couple by MilkyMelodies with Caleb Holes singing Magnificos part
The song that really shocked me was the end credits song. I REALLY like it and I was surprised that wasn’t Asha’s “I Want” song. Apparently it was the song that Julia Michaels pitched to the movie that got her the job…. But it got cut. And I’m like WHAT ???? You’re cutting the song that this person was hired based on????? HUH
I'm not mad, I'm just so disappointed. This movie could be good. I loved Encanto and Luca, I liked Elemental and I also really liked Strange World or Onward. But Wish was so flat and loveless :( Asha deserved better
It really does come down to how badly Disney fumbled what could have been great in a hundred different ways. They could have embraced their history and made something along the lines of a full-length Sorcerer's Apprentice movie starring Mickey himself or some original character to take the role. They could have done what they claimed to want and honestly have an origin story for their wishing star instead of just having it show up as a barely-relevant marketable plushie. They could have done one of the several variations of this movie's script that had a coherent narrative. Instead, for their 100th Anniversary movie, Disney decided to make the most bland, executive mandated, chopped salad of a movie. Something that has no passion, not thought, and no care involved in its creation beyond getting g something out that is completely devoid of substance. Instead of celebrating the best of the company's long history, Wish represents a compilation of Disney's current flaws.
I think "let people enjoy things" works best as a response to moral outrage, if that makes sense. In the online realm of criticism nowadays you see a lot of "X character did Y bad thing and the story didn't punish them for it, so the story condones doing Y." In cases where someone is using their analysis as a weapon to attack the artist or claim a lack of morality from the viewers, sometimes all you can say is to chill and let it be. I think a lot of people misconstrue legitimate criticism with reactionary or simplistic interpretations, and start to act like any criticism is some kind of personal claim. After all, if everyone you interact with does mean that criticism as a personal slight, you're going to take it as such. People just need to relearn how to separate criticism from morality imo
I saw Wish and I was like, "Ehhh, ok," and I hate to say it, it was very underwhelming and it doesn't have that wow factor that most of the classic Disney movies have and I feel like the ideas fell flat. I hate when great ideas aren't actually executed properly and that's what makes it disappointing. BTW, I've lost my 2 grandpas, and my grandma and seeing someone or even hearing them mention how they lost a relative, just hits me in the feels that can't be articulated. Side note, hearing the Wii music in the background made me snicker 😂😂😂, and one huge moment in my life is getting fired from my job that I won't get into much detail about, but I know for a fact that your videos cheer me up in no time, and I'll stand by you 💎💎💎
This makes a lot of sense! when the film came out I was so sad after seeing the concept art, because I was in looove with the film's potential and enchanted by all the possibilities of an incredible magical film (which unfortunately doesn't exist) which inspired me to start drawing again after MONTHS, I even rewrote the characters' stories along with my friends who were also REVOLTED with the final result of the film, we were talking for almost a full week about a new story, how we would like the film to be (based on the original ideas, taking things from the final result and adding our ideas) , I just need to put everything together, that would result in a new script HAHAHAHA
20:11 I truly believe that music is one of the most if not THE most important parts of a Disney movie and it is so mind-boggling to me that Alan Menken was not hired to be part of this film (RIP Howard Ashman). If not Menken, then why not Lin-Manuel Miranda? Or the Lopez’s? Or maybe even Pasek and Paul? I feel like they could do a great Disney musical. I have absolutely no clue wtf they chose Julia Michaels of all people….
Yeah I truly have no idea what they were thinking - what would have been a great symbol would have been to hire a different composer + lyricist team for each song. Like Alan Menken + Glenn Slater write the "I Want" song, LMM write the opening number, the Lopez write the group song with all the friends or "I'm A Star" etc. I wish they had done something like that because it would be a great tribute to Disney's history.
My favourite rewrite is probably the one I have in my head LOL. But what I really like is the joint Magnificio + Amaya original villain song! I also like the rewrite versions where they make the instrumental more broadway
After MONTHS of me talking high praise about this channel to my twin, THIS was the video that made her watch you. BECAUSE SOMEONE FINALLY SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THE FOLKTALES
Awwwwwwww I’m so glad to hear that! I’m glad you both are able to find a UA-camr to enjoy together 🥹🥹🥹🥹 my sister would never watch what I like with me 😂🤣
i was gonna say i’m not mad, just disappointed. but no wish makes me mad and disappointed. i am truly in shock of how much disney completely fumbled what could’ve been a fantastic film. the only good thing about it is how much it’s sparked my creativity. also because the film is so disliked it gives me basically free range to claim asha as my own cause she’s such a cutie pie
Yeah I completely agree with you. We are adopting her!! This is the only film where in 2045 or something I’d be like “yeah maybe a live action remake could fix this” lol. I guarantee we will see some loosely inspired by Wish YA novels in the next few years!
I'm really glad to hear that. English was always my favourite subject in school and I feel like it's becoming "this is the 'right' interpretation/theme/etc" and teaching students to just copy that instead of "this is how you analyze something to figure those things out". It's always good to know how to reflect and analyze these things to figure it out!
Wow This video made me feel a lot more then I expected. I guess I outta thank wish for creating this channel because I really love your thoughts and analysis on stuff! I've learned so much about music and how musical theater songs are constructed! Thank you!
Kinda off topic but I love how you reply to all of these comments bc it feels like an actual discussion about these topics. There’s just no one who I know IRL that cares enough about this stuff to talk about it with me
Awwwwww this makes me SO HAPPY!!! 😭😭😭😭🥹🥹🥹🥹 This is why I made my channel, because I felt like I had no one to talk to about these things after I graduated musical theatre school. So I'm glad we can all gather together here!!
It's a movie like this that makes you appreciate things that may have actually done things right. Many Disney adults that hate LMM have been mighty quiet since this disasterpeace dropped
That's a great point as well - when you do experience something you don't like, you're able to look at the things you do like and compare them. That's why it's so important to have reflection about the things we watch!
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch IMO, the big issue is that most Disney fans knowledge on musical theater begins and ends with Disney themselves. People on this app drive home the fact that Miranda's recruitment by Disney is the reason that they've been using more poppy songs lately. Even though the Sherman Brothers and the team behind Cinderella used to write for rock and roll and pop song before Walt Disney himself recruited them. Lin and the scores he makes are not much different from what you see on Broadway today, but because most people don't know that they just assumed that he's just trying to beat it and down with the kids. The man only knows how to write Broadway stuff.
Yeah that's a very good point. Like LMM IS Special and unique, but the problem is, a LOT of Broadway is unique. If Disney is your only frame of reference that's going to make LMM stand out more than he actually does. Because for the most part, Disney has the same composers and lyricists (except for this movie... idk why this is when they decided to change things LOL) and even though "Disney Sound" has totally become a sub-genre, it's also a style. Each songwriter has their own unique style and if people ONLY watch Disney movies they won't understand that aspect of Broadway at large.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch I think you should definitely make a video about that imo. I feel like Disney fans have a limited understanding of what makes a Broadway musical outside of the Disney Renaissance.
Legitimately got to 5 minutes in and then paused to talk about MORE cool ideas my hubby and I had for this movie… for 40 miles on our road trip. Anyway, we’re back to keep going!
I actually found your channel through your This Wish lyric analysis, and I've loved all of your musical analyses so far! I'm one of the people that never really knew the technical aspects of song writing, and now I find myself analyzing lyrics to a lot of songs I listen to lol! You've definitely helped me think more critically about music
Thank you so much, I'm so glad to hear that! 🥹🥹🥹 I am going to do more lyric analysis videos for sure, they take a lot of time in comparison to this but comments like these make it all worth it!
Well said, if you look in Wish illustrated book, you will see if the company or higher ups had just them tell their original story, sure it may been simple but i think that's what we need right now. A simple story to let our imagination fly My own prequel story will definitely be changing a few aspects and characters but I want to make it so the things that did happen in Wish make more sense...that's essentially my goal. ❤
Yeah it's so strange because they really bogged it down with all these unnecessary things, whereas an evil Queen and King and a hero with magic she needs to learn how to use would have been simple but effective in sending the message that I think they wanted to send. Like the artbook has that Asha is supposed to be a normal girl who has to fight against a corrupt system, so I don't know why they made everything so complicated when it came to demonstrating that.
Easiest question to answer: because it was for the 100th anniversary. They shoved in so much nostalgia bait. And won’t even dare to do daring things with their media because “money money money! must be funny! in a rich man’s world!” But Wish proved that it was so not worth it. I would rather have Encanto be the 100th year celebration film. I’d rather watch winx club season 7 than WISH. I WlSH this movie were in 2D at the ever fudging *_least!_* I wish the impossible. That they hired small indie creators to make a traditional tale into a Disney masterpiece. Hand drawn even. Yesh. Delusions. But *_come on!_* 100 years?! 1 Century? HeII yeah we should go all the way
because if my religion prevents me from hating people, I'm gonna at least hate media. that is permissable by the lord, other than that I try to remain positive and respect my fellow man✝❤
At this point, it will be a matter of time before someone actually makes a new Wish movie by piecing together everything the fans recreated. Even if it's just a animated story board. I would still watch it. I miss the times when stories were created to be fun and different and make you feel things, now, it's just a bunch of people doing check boxes and quotas. Stories were to transport you to a different world to experience a different life. We need to bring that back.
2:44 Yesss I'm not a song writer but I do write stories and comics and that stuff and I've always wanted to do that since I was five, I'm not an adult but I've learned how to write stories by watching critics criticize movies and cartoons and books. If they never made their videos I wouldn't know how to write the way I do now.
We hate Wish because we love the Disney legacy. All of wanted to celebrate the centennial with something special, magical, amazing. We had high hopes, but we were disappointed. I personally would have loved a sort of Fantasia 2023 where all the characters come together in a full length movie, with Mickey leading them to a special place where they could meet Disney himself. All the villains could attempt to stop them or smth. There could have been experimental animation, bringing back 2D animators to give interviews. A combination of 2D, 3D, live action, That would have been so cool! Disney did this in a short, but heck! It was too short. 100 years deserved a 100 minute movie about it. Wish was too bland for all our expectations. It simply didn't come out in the right year. Had it come out in 2024, we wouldn't be so upset maybe, but it definitely shouldn't have been marketed as THE movie to mark the 100th anniversary. It was like a bland tasteless cake at a very fancy wedding. Wish
I have a video suggestion, though im not sure how viable itd be- would it be possible to review some rewritten covers or versions of songs? Like some of Lydia the Bards covers, for example- and compare their remade lyrics to the original song, seeing whats improved and how well they held or shifted the tone. I think itd be interesting to compare fanwork to original. not sure if you could do this one, since youd probably have to get permission from the creators, but I wanted to suggest it!
i'M REALLY INTERESTED IN THAT I just need to get permission from the people and figure all of that out. I LOVE Lydia the Bard and I've actually worked with one of the composers she works with for one of my musical theatre fan songs haha.
I think many people had a lot of fun coming up with ideas to try to improve the idea of Wish. Many people like watching bad movies to see how they can try to improve a story.
Exactly! And it's fun to have a world to play with and explore. It shows how this movie has a lot of interesting concepts and ideas that they just didn't use.
Honestly though, “Poppin’ this one!” was the one part that actually made me laugh. I thought that was pretty good. (But what terrible parent wished for that?! You have 1 chance nd that’s what you ask for??)
Wish was my least favorite movie of last year (my favorite being TMNT mutant mayhem) This year my least favorite movie is kung fu panda 4 (and my favorite being monkey man!) I swear the only thing I remember about wish was like one good song and an Amazon prime commercial with homelander killing a crowd of people in a bloody mess! King fu panda 4 I like the end credits song and the animation is really good!
Let me tell you a story: my grandfather (who I mention in this video) immigrated here (to Canada) from Italy. He started washing dishes, and worked his way up to owning a construction company. After years of hard work, he was able to afford sending his children to university, he built a cottage for them to enjoy, they built a big house, got all the things they were promised. He saved everything he could so when he died, his children could maintain the cottage and the house. He wanted to leave something behind. When he died, the government came for every singe cent. My family is forced to sell the house he built because the government is asking for so much money. And the cottage probably won’t be far behind. In the governments eyes, my grandfather made a “profit” because the “home” has increased in value. Even though we had no plans to sell it, and the current value is a reflection of Canada’s horrible housing market / crisis. My family is actually worse off compared to if he didn’t leave anything at all, because the government wants money that doesn’t exist. (Hence that we have to sell his house/the cottage, and it hasn’t sold). People have to take out loans or borrow money some other way just to get the government off their backs until they can sell the property they never wanted to have to sell! It no longer benefits anyone to die with anything more than a primary residence, and anything less than $50,000. They are taking everything he built. When I talk about the failed dream, that’s what I mean. I’m glad you haven’t experienced that, but it’s coming for all of us sooner or later. It won’t be easily noticed when you get here, but it will be felt when you try to build generational wealth for your own kids and they’ll be left with nothing. Idk about the US but I hear similar things down there too. People have to open their eyes.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch That’s pretty much fortuity not landing in his favour. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope he was a kind man. A man who was kind to anyone and everyone. We’ve achieved that and more and this modern era is taking steps to make sure an overhaul is inevitable for the good of the regular vulnerable people. I can see it!
Finally, someone else who had also came to the conclusion that Wish technically succeeded as an original fairytale that will be adapted in various ways.
Absolutely! And I feel like Disney has totally lost that recently 😔 like what is the message? Why do we as the people need to rally behind this story? What wish fulfilment does it provide as a fairytale and why do we care?
Well I mindlessly consume wish criticism cause potential was thrown out the window right into a warning sign bc they played it safe and didn’t give us what worked better and deserved to shine!
i guess theres smth to be said about how Asha was dissapointed in the "evil" king and took things into her own hands, just like how people on yt are doing with this movie
Disney could REALLY benefit from a movie that is purely art without worrying if the characters can be turned into cheap merchandise. Asha being black could've been deeper than just representation. She's was SUPPOSED to symbolize the comeback of 2D animation, and the last 2D animated movie by Disney was The Princess & The Frog which also had a black female lead. This should've been the moment to finally depict a black woman in fiction in a fantastical manner besides turning her into a FROG.
Personally, I didn't hate Wish. When I went to see it I actually liked it. I didn't think it was perfect and my main complaint with it is that it got a bit too bathos-y at times, but I liked it. But if someone else didn't like it, that's fine.
Why not? 🤔 Being part of a family is for 99% of people, relatable. And they made sure to find common truths about how people working on the movie felt. That is the human experience lol.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch I was referring to the 3 consecutive things that were listed. I just wouldn’t call then “universal truths” especially the 3rd one
I heavily disagree. Even in the healthiest family everyone has felt this way at least one. Universal truths doesn’t mean they are always true, it means that most people understand and have felt similarly, no matter how brief. It’s something everyone will go through.
Most these negative "feedback" are nothing new. It's the same thing of "this or that is shit, trash, garbage" with many people agreeing, each and everyday. Plus, people don't talk about improving, but rather destructive feedback and rather want said company(Disney) to die in acid. The commentary speaks for themselves. Btw cute Draculaura and Cruella DeVille hairstyle
Well luckily for you my channel doesn't do any of that! And a lot of the other channels I mentioned don't do that either - we talk about the actual problems and present real, functional solutions. I don't want Disney to go bankrupt or shutdown, I'm a Disney fan! Hopefully next time, they'll just... do better. And thanks, the hair is Neopolitan from RWBY!
I interpret the reaction of the internet to wish as "This corporation is devoid of passion for the art that made them big, so if they don't make good stories I'll be the one to put that goddam passion up there where it deserves to be" and I love it so much
That's because it's the correct interpretation.
Exactly, and this is what I want people to take away from this video.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch because that's the ONLY correct interpretation. Anyone who thinks differently has something wrong with them inside their brain.
I love that the enrirety of the Wish fandom's sole existence is dedicated to fixing the film
Kinda gives off a sense of unity and teamwork in a way, yk? Having us all come toguether to have a better glimpse at what could have been great
I myself hope to rewrite the movie someday, I even redid two songs already, so yeah
EXACTLY! And I hope that's what people will take away from this entire situation. There's something so powerful about people coming together to tell a story they really believe in 🥹🥹🥹
It’s a wonderful exercise for aspiring writers, musicians, and artists!
"Let people enjoy things" is what I call "positive contrarianism." It's just as annoying as people who hate everything popular.
I think the best thing that came out of wish was the inspiration it gave to the fans to make their own content
EXACTLY. That's what I hope people will remember and learn from this - this is exactly what I want people to take away from this video
Definitely! This movie sprouted lots of creativity, imagination, and character. Like fertilizer to plants.
Even if it was just for kids that doesn't mean they should get away with being bad
I’m sorry. Is reading into things too deep to find a message, not something people did with older Disney movies and most movies in general.
I hope you don't mind me doing a mini-rant myself about "Wish":
(Before I start, I question why they didn't finish "Gigantic," a fairy tale musical set in Spain, or at least use the same team for "Wish" once it was cancelled.)
Mix elements of "Kingdom Hearts" and "Enchanted" for good measure, perhaps with some good sassy jokes like "The Emperor's New Groove."
THESE ARE SUCH GOOD IDEAS I WISH THAT WISH WAS ACTUALLY LIKE THIS
@@onceuponahair20 Honestly we could've gotten a better movie, but it seems Disney didn't know what they wanted to do and then rushed their creatives; "This Wish" was made before the script and Julia said they only had one storyboard to work off of.
Every bag disney fumbles gives me more motivation to improve my own writing
I can't wait to see what all of you create someday! 🥰🥰
"Just let people enjoy things." I don't remember forbidding them to.
YEAH THAT REALLY CONFUSES ME LOL. Like... if my mere existence prevents people from enjoying the thing they like, I wonder if they really like it lol. No one has ever changed my mind about something I've genuinely loved, but people have changed my mind about things that I felt sort of torn about.
to me that's an unconscious admission of awareness that the media they enjoy is objectively bad.
(long ramble incoming, apologies)
as someone who has genuinely not stopped thinking about this movie and its concepts since it came out, I absolutely love this video and the analysis you put behind it.
(I truly cannot wait for those NDAs to expire because I need to hear about the production issues that went on behind the scenes for this one - I need an HBO documentary, a dozen UA-cam analyses, and all of the Twitter threads.)
it also absolutely delights me that in all of the disney mediocrity of the last few years, new creators, artists, writers, and fandoms have emerged and found success. after the train wreck of Mulan 2020, I found an entire community of AAPI creators who I've been following since and introduced me to so many stories I wouldn't have known about otherwise. and now, with Wish 2023, I've found some incredibly talented creators and awesome channels (such as yours) that have introduced me to music composition, fairy tale history, story creation, character creation, and more. it's so cool to see how this disappointing movie has inspired so many people and launched amazing works.
anyway, fantastic video as always, calxyin!
That's what I did for my rewrite! I was inspired by the Three Good Fairies from Sleeping Beauty.
OR we can keep both Star and Starboy coexisting by having star be like Starboy’s lil partner. So it’s like Peter Pan and Tinkerbell’s dynamic. Plus, when Asha and SB are paired, The goat boy can be paired with the star
@@petthepirate3115 I like that too. I like both of the ideas
Thanks for coming to my (jumbled and unorganized) Ted Talk! xD
I couldn't agree more.
Oh I totally agree. I love seeing people remake things, it's my favourite thing about this platform!
Haha, I wish I had a different picture but this is the only marketing render they had 😂🤣
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch yeah I can't wait to see what more you have to say especially after once I decide to finally watch Wish
I wish they kept Starboy, the shapeshifter, why not have a doll of him as a human fashion doll but also keep his star form cute for other merchandise
Yeah it’s really weird, they could have just had both! They didn’t have any problem making stuff with Tiana in frog form AND in human form 🥴🥴🥴
As someone who’s progressively grown more and more resentful of disney since 2013 I take some enjoyment in seeing them continue to fail more and more often than not
R.I.P. Calxiyn's grandpa. 😭😭
Just cause it'd for children doesn't mean it doesn't need to be well made
(I'm not saying this as a rude statement, Thought I should make that clear so it doesn't get taken the wrong way.)
Can't wait for the next Wish song criticism.
GIRL YOU POPPED OFF SO HARD WITH THIS ONE!!
🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹 AWWWW THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!
Pretty ironic that Wish has succeeded in its goal of inspiring people to hope and dream and create, just not in the way it was expecting to XD
Also if the "let people enjoy things" sayers were actually true to their beliefs, they should have absolutely no problem with letting someone enjoy critiquing a piece of work they found lacking, methinks.
Thank you! Tangled is my favourite princess movie 🥹🥹🥹 I love Hunchback of Notre Dame but Tangled and Tangled The Series are PEAK
Everything was about appearances and the movie didn't even look that great 😅😅😅
22:45 this just reminds me that art is becoming more and more monopolised and unless you’re Mr Eiger’s daughter, you’re not going to make it
I think the worst thing about projects like these that have potentnial but end up a fail is imagining what it would be like to be one of the creatives. It's not the artists fault that Wish is like this so picture having to just work on this movie knowing what was scraped, knowing what it could have been and letting it fall through your fingers because it's ultimately up to the higher ups.
I really need someone to leak information about the production of this movie because I am SO curious about what was happening over there LOL
My favorite part of wish was when i misheard magnifico saying “how cute” to star, I thought he said “f*ck you” 😂
That’s the only way I can hear it now
Also you always have the best outfits 👌✨
Thank you so much!! Also Lmaoooooooo could you imagine 😭 I feel like Magnificio WOULD say a swear word honestly.
There’s way more to talk about what WASN’T in the movie than what WAS
EXACTLY! I want to do a video about the entire movie (this was more about the fandom) and the script is 15,000 words long LMAOOOO
As for 'was the company telling them what to do': Recently watched a vid about apparently just that happening over at Pixar. That the execs said to NOT tell personal stories anymore, but stick to 'biggest possible mass appeal'
Yeah I watched a video from Schaffrillas about that and I was like... yikes. It's not looking good man
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch that's exactly the vid (i had to dive through my history to find who made it again Dx ) But yeah. It's like... isn't that what almost completely bankrupted several entertainment industries and got so many hows cancelled?
I didn’t think that today I would realize we are in our peasant era but I’m all for it
LOL We totally are.
Oh, don’t even get me started on the songs! Why, oh, why didn’t they just hire Alan Menken?!
@@jamiegduboisI heard somewhere that they tried to hire theatrical music writers, but they refused because of the time crunch.
And yeah, this movie (even though I haven’t watched it) just feels lazy.
@@13sinra13 If that’s the case, then fair enough to the musical theatre writers, but it bothers me that there was a time crunch in the first place. You would think this would be the type of project they should have given themselves plenty of time to work on (although I guess you could argue covid might have interfered?j
The fact that small channels like us also made more money off of wish than Disney did is endlessly hilarious to me aha
We created an entire economy for real LOL

21:56 JENNY NICHOLSON MENTION, LETS GOOO
Her videos are SO GOOD. I had to mention her lol
Thank you for making this video! I have been feeling the same about Wish and I finnaly understand how i feel about Miraculous ladybug. (Hear me out-)
While Mlb right now is at a stand still with production.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch It's like a train wreck you can never escape lol. Whats your other channel named?
HUH
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch whoa, really. That's messed up. I only saw the end credits once though
I'm not mad, I'm just so disappointed. This movie could be good. I loved Encanto and Luca, I liked Elemental and I also really liked Strange World or Onward. But Wish was so flat and loveless :( Asha deserved better
I feel the exact same way. "I'm not mad, just disappointed" is SO real 🥹🥹😭😭😭😭
Unrelated but omg I ADORE your outfit! 😍😍😍
Thank you so much!!
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch no problem! Love you content, keep up the great work
I saw Wish and I was like, "Ehhh, ok," and I hate to say it, it was very underwhelming and it doesn't have that wow factor that most of the classic Disney movies have and I feel like the ideas fell flat. I hate when great ideas aren't actually executed properly and that's what makes it disappointing.
BTW, I've lost my 2 grandpas, and my grandma and seeing someone or even hearing them mention how they lost a relative, just hits me in the feels that can't be articulated.
Side note, hearing the Wii music in the background made me snicker 😂😂😂, and one huge moment in my life is getting fired from my job that I won't get into much detail about, but I know for a fact that your videos cheer me up in no time, and I'll stand by you 💎💎💎
This makes a lot of sense! when the film came out I was so sad after seeing the concept art, because I was in looove with the film's potential and enchanted by all the possibilities of an incredible magical film (which unfortunately doesn't exist) which inspired me to start drawing again after MONTHS, I even rewrote the characters' stories along with my friends who were also REVOLTED with the final result of the film, we were talking for almost a full week about a new story, how we would like the film to be (based on the original ideas, taking things from the final result and adding our ideas) , I just need to put everything together, that would result in a new script HAHAHAHA
this movie hurt me because the king was made a hero and they banished him forever..
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Ooo, that would have been a great idea! And sounds like a really cool concept too!

My favourite rewrite is probably the one I have in my head LOL. But what I really like is the joint Magnificio + Amaya original villain song! I also like the rewrite versions where they make the instrumental more broadway

i was gonna say i’m not mad, just disappointed. but no wish makes me mad and disappointed. i am truly in shock of how much disney completely fumbled what could’ve been a fantastic film. the only good thing about it is how much it’s sparked my creativity. also because the film is so disliked it gives me basically free range to claim asha as my own cause she’s such a cutie pie
Yeah I completely agree with you. We are adopting her!! This is the only film where in 2045 or something I’d be like “yeah maybe a live action remake could fix this” lol. I guarantee we will see some loosely inspired by Wish YA novels in the next few years!
This us an excellent point! I watched the movie, I had no idea why I hated it. My a$$ had yo get educated to properly point out what I didn't like.
Wow

Yeah I didn’t pay either lol. I watched it on Disney+ but I didn’t buy Disney+ to watch this movie.
Well said, if you look in Wish illustrated book, you will see if the company or higher ups had just them tell their original story, sure it may been simple but i think that's what we need right now. A simple story to let our imagination fly
My own prequel story will definitely be changing a few aspects and characters but I want to make it so the things that did happen in Wish make more sense...that's essentially my goal.

Ahhhh I’m so happy to hear that! I hope my videos will be helpful to all writers, not just songwriters so I’m very glad!
Wish
I have a video suggestion, though im not sure how viable itd be-
would it be possible to review some rewritten covers or versions of songs? Like some of Lydia the Bards covers, for example- and compare their remade lyrics to the original song, seeing whats improved and how well they held or shifted the tone. I think itd be interesting to compare fanwork to original. not sure if you could do this one, since youd probably have to get permission from the creators, but I wanted to suggest it!
i'M REALLY INTERESTED IN THAT I just need to get permission from the people and figure all of that out. I LOVE Lydia the Bard and I've actually worked with one of the composers she works with for one of my musical theatre fan songs haha.

The one that’s currently failing 😭😭😭😭
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch welp cant relate :/ but hey thanks for the engagement ^^
I don't hate that movie
I don’t truly hate it either 😔✊ I just want to make it better!
Art is not meant for mindless consumption. There is always a deeper message that is conveyed from the artist to the audience.
I love this video! Thanks for making it!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
i guess theres smth to be said about how Asha was dissapointed in the "evil" king and took things into her own hands, just like how people on yt are doing with this movie
I'm just in awe that the writers accidentally made Asha the villain of the story
This is such a great video. It's very uplifting and empowering. :)
Thank you so much!!
I wouldn’t say that or call it that 21:19
21:26 sure Jan
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Poor things. (I was gonna say poor unfortunate souls😭) Maybe my bias is coming out because I never experienced those things 🤷♂️
Hi big fan❤ can you analyze a song from the tangled tv show i think that would be pretty cool🥰
