  • I’ll show you how to change the clock spring in a Hyundai Sonata or Elantra. A bad clock spring can give you air bag light codes, problems with cruise control, radio buttons, trip meter, or phone control buttons on the steering wheel. This is a pretty easy repair if you take your time and follow the steps.

To ti fandím.

If your horn doesn’t work, does the steps in this video help fix it?

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  9 місяців тому

It could because the horn and everything else on the steering wheel goes through the clock spring.

Did you have to use the scanner to clear the airbag light DTCs once you completed the repair, or did the DTCs clear by themselves? My sister's Santa Fe had the recall on the clock spring and an update for "short statured adults" in the occupancy settings, so it had to go to a stealership unfortunately. After the repair, the airbag light initially turned off, but as soon as I moved the steering wheel it came back on and a new light "ESC Off" came on - it was not previously on. The stealership said it would require a diagnostic fee to determine the causes, even though they'd clearly made the car worse and I hadn't even left the place yet.
When I got home, I disassembled the steering wheel and found that they had not properly plugged in the new clock spring. It snaps into place and instead if was just loose in the connection. I wonder if it wasn't making good connection, causing the airbag light to return and the ESC to disable itself as well. Now that it's connected, do I need to clear the DTCs? If you have to clear them after a proper repair, then it would make a little more sense to me.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Sounds like you're handy enough to own a decent scanner. Check around on Amazon, they're all very similar and often on sale or have a coupon.
Most lights will reset once the problem is corrected. You can try removing both battery cables and touching them together to drain the system. Or disconnect them and wait an hour.
I probably cleared it with the scanner and didn't have an issue with the ESC so I'm not sure.

@@HouseDoctorRay Thanks for the reply and the great video as well. I unfortunately agree that I need a scanner for these SRS/chassis DTCs, etc. Lots of options and it gets confusing as to whether you're paying for extra software functionality or simply a bigger screen and faster processing. I watch Pine Hollow Diagnostics often so the features he has with his scanners would definitely come in handy occasionally in my vehicles and for friends and family.
Her TMPS module is also shot (there's like 10 DTCs set from it, a tire shop scanned them all a few years ago and Alldata says it's the TPMS module). Replacing that requires ECM encoding and it's not clear if any of the Topdon/Launch et al can do that. The Hyundai GDS software and Cloned VCIs seem to be readily available in expensively, so I may try that route first. Anything to avoid the stealership at this point, whose quality of work is highly suspect.
I appreciate the response and thanks again for the clear and concise video that helped me easily access the clock spring. I did use a non-elbow torque wrench for the proper torque valve, but whaddyaknow, the marks on the bolt lined up exactly.

@brassmule I doubt any of those scanners are going to be able to program any of the modules. You would need something like DiabloSport and a laptop to do that kind of work.
It's really sad that we can't trust stealerships anymore but they did it to themselves.

@@HouseDoctorRay Kind of my thought, too. I'm going to YOLO on the GDS + VCI and hope it works - other people seem to have had success with it. It's the dealership tool effectively. I can report back with success or failure. I've got an older Windows 7 laptop in storage so I'm mostly set up for it already.
I still need a scanner for my other cars so still a box to check off. Thanks again for your responses and feedback!

@@HouseDoctorRay All fixed as of today. Cleared the SRS codes (both codes from clockspring not being plugged in), reset the steering angle sensor and the ESC Off light is no longer illuminated. No more DTCs on scan now. Bought a Topdon ArtiDiag Pro to complete the "repairs" that the stealership left me with from failing to do the clock spring replacement correctly. Thanks for your help!

Double check the connections on the back of the airbag. The little clips need to be pushed on until they click.
There is a separate airbag recall for the Hyundais, check that out.
