      The only reason george isn't more respected is cause ali beat him. That's all casuals know him for, he's a top 10-15 heavyweight easy. People put tyson in their top 10 but foreman accomplished a lot more and has a way better resume. Also the fact that George is also a gold medalist on top of everything gives him an extra notch on his belt

    "I'm not fighting that animal....If you love him so much, you fight him!" (Mike Tyson to Don King in the 1990s about a proposed matchup between Tyson and Old George Foreman.) Tyson thought Foreman's nice guy thing was all an act and knew he still carried a ton of power and thought he neither had the size nor the style to beat him.

    • @bthorn5035
      @bthorn5035 4 роки тому +10

      That was based off the fights he saw with Cus during film session. His style was based off Frazier's and Cus warned Tyson how you couldn't stand in front of a beast like Foreman and hope to prevail. He watched Frazier get knocked down 6 times and lose it all in just 2 rounds. He knew Foreman wasn't exactly the same person, years later, but he knew he was a horrible matchup against those 2 sledgehammers hanging off Foreman's shoulders.

    Remember these lines taken from interview between Forman and a Journalist :
    - George Forman, if you loose that important bout, are you going to continue your carreer ?
    - I beg your pardon ?!
    - I mean, if you loose this fight, are you going to continue boxing ?
    Once again:
    - I beg you pardon ?!
    George Forman went from somebody who were never smiling, who always wanted to scare everybody and be seen as the very baddest all the way to a very nice and charming guy, whith great wisdom, self-confidence, joy and humility and lot of calm and peace in his words and behavior what I really believe is his very true personality. And it all changed after 1974 and that "Rumble in the jungle". And that is something Ali is able to do to a man. Bring out all the kindness and the very bright side of a terrifying warrior. Respect to two great athlets.

    Foreman against Ali, in my opinion, was scarier than Tyson. Tyson had such a ferocity and you could feel his domination and the will of a juggernaut. Foreman, on the other hand, felt like a murderer.

    Just to clear up a couple of misconceptions- Ali did not beat George into a nice guy- at least not directly. Foreman was doing pretty well coming back with somewhat improved stamina but still a reckless style, and then 3 years later he fought a light hitting boxer named Jimmy Young who was a known spoiler at the time. He didn't get a lot of KOs, but he had a fast style somewhat like Ali, and had no problem going the distance. Once again George had trouble although he did go the distance this time but lost the decision. He was so exhausted he suffered heat stroke after the match and this is when his religious experience occurred.
    Ali did train for the rope a dope, it may have been one of a number of strategies he considered, but you can see numerous training videos of him allowing a young Larry Holmes to pound him to the body and even the head. Larry didn't have as much power as Foreman, but he had a lot more than Ali, probably even at this stage. Naturally he wasn't the slick mover which is one reason he isn't as loved as Ali. But Ali was scared of Foreman. (He has admitted this in numerous interviews). He got in touch with Cus D'Amato whom he respected and asked him how he could possibly beat Foreman. Cus told him Foreman was a bully, so at the beginning of the fight hit George with a good right and George would be surprised and it would take the wind out of his sails. And if you watch the fight Ali took the advice. Now that we know the results of the Jimmy Young fight and see an old Ali possibly in the early stages of Parkinson's stand up to Earnie Shavers we can see that Ali beating Foreman was probably a foregone conclusion (maybe not by knockout, but definitely a UD), but at the time, even to Ali it was tough to imagine how he could do it. But Ali did know Foreman was slow, and he had been scared of Sonny Liston and that had come out just fine, so I think there was a mixture of both fear and somewhat real confidence that he exaggerated in interviews.

    The most underrated sporting event of the 20th century is George Foreman regaining the HW Championship. Not just because of his age, but because he had abandoned who he was and reinvented himself...and he was actually quite rich with his business ventures by then.

    If you ever find yourself not liking where you are in this world, there's no better role model than George Foreman. Larry Merchant was around back when George came up the first time. In Foremans 2nd time around, he spoke of the amazing transformation of his personality. When George was young, Merchant said he was a "very violent, uncooperative human being!!"

    the shot that KO'd Micheal Moorer didn't even look particularly hard, but it won him a World title. one shot, and 20 years faded into history. Ron Lyle was on his way to a decision against ALI, when ALI landed one of those rare right hands that took Lyle's legs away, causing the ref to stop it. the same shot he used to KO Zora Folley, and a couple other guys. underrated right hand.

    I've heard Sonny Liston hit harder than Foreman. Liston needed 22 oz gloves to spar. Angelo Dundee said he saw Liston knock a man's teeth out with a jab. Now that's hard hitting.
