As a Maryland resident I tried to sign up to their website and “fan club” only to get a phone call the next day telling me I had to pay to sign up, I was 14 years old with no money and not even a bank account. Needless to say my dad was not happy with me or the team after that.
Funny stuff. In 1999 you just watched Sports Center and you knew and saw everything. This was before ESPN became the garbage it is now. You also had HBO, and all the networks with extensive coverage.
I was guessing 20 dollars per month. Back in 1999 it was not clear what people would pay for special internet content. Excellent video. I am sharing it on my twitter
Outstanding video. Generally overlooked are many missteps made by my Ravens in its first four years (Brock Marion "signing," Harper LeBel, etc.). Remnants of PSINet brand today include ads in team publications at the time, including back cover of media guides featuring people knocking on camera lens from its TV commercial which is featured in this video. PSINet also on stadium name in Super Bowl XXXV Championship season.
81 dollars more than all games combined! That's the craziest PR concept ever. Unreal that they actually thought this would somehow work out. Great story that I never heard of at any time. No shock it didn't work out...and very quickly. Yes, the "land of delusion" expecting 30k and getting 400 :)...and love the party analogy of 100 chairs set up fort everyone and only 1 person comes. Excellent analogies throughout this video
Regarding this concept the initials PR does not mean public relations. It means public ripoff. I have watched a lot of videos by JAGMAN. But this is the funniest one. I love it when he rants. Especially when it is so justified.
@@shackdaddy7106 I love it when he goes off too but IDK about $20 a month being such an issue when way more people pay way more than that to access internet content today that's just as much of a ripoff.
@@shackdaddy7106 I very grudgingly gave in and agreed to pay Stathead $5 a month to access data on Pro Football Reference that I'd been able to see for free for at least a decade before. I think this is even more ridiculous when you factor in that in 1999 a) streaming video quality was so so much worse than it is today, even more so on dial-up and b) you could find some email addresses for celebrities, so that wasn't even really useful. So yeah the idea of shelling out $20 a month is laughable.
In Pittsburgh, the RSN broadcasts the press conferences live. So it comes with your cable. I wonder if Comcast Sports Mod Atlantic (originally Home Team Sports) did anything similar then.
Hey JG9, would love to see a video about Levi’s Stadium at some point. I recall the first football game ever played there (Broncos vs 49ers preseason) was so hot that people were passing out from heat stroke and drenched in sweat and someone even died of a heart attack being out in the heat. I was reminded of this incident when my alma mater UC Davis had to cancel their graduation mid-ceremony last week because of the heat. It gets VERY hot in June up in the area and for whatever reason they had the ceremony on the football field. Just throwing an obscure NFL history tidbit suggestion out there, love your content!
I agree with that idea for a future video. I recall the very first event that was held at Levi's Stadium a nationally televised MLS game between San Jose & Seattle in which the field was in poor condition & too narrow for soccer. San Jose had to use Levi's Stadium for home games for 2 seasons while PayPal Park (a soccer specific stadium just for them) was being built. However since then, Levi's Stadium has greatly improved its ability to host major soccer events to the point in which they will be hosting World Cup games in 2026.
@@chrisguardiano6143 They seemed to figure it out after several years of a rough start to the stadium overall. The turf, battles with the city, not having enough shade, etc. along with some AWFUL 49ers teams were some dark days. Funny thing is that I’ve been to the In N Out right next to PayPal many many times but I have never actually gone inside the stadium. I remember when that was being built.
I always thought it was cool weather in San Francisco. Unlike Detroit where it usually warm or hot weather at Comerica Park from May to October for Tigers home games. I am glad Lions play indoors. Always 68 degrees inside Ford Field.
Our society sure has come a long way from the dark ages of the late '90s! It really was. The first message board I posted on in '98 had no rules except for some reason you couldn't type curse words. But otherwise anybody could say anything to anyone else they wanted. Also, there was no censorship or forcing people to pay for sites. But the popup ads were a HUGE problem.

This sounds like something that would happen in Washington with Daniel Snyder.
Minus the sexual harassment
Today. And Danny Boy would force season ticket holders to buy it, or face legal issues.
If it were Snyder, he would also own PSINet
