Merci Joan. Camille Rebuffet
About 15 years ago on a hot summers day in August, I was sitting in a park in Paris which backed onto some old apartments. Out of one open balcony came this recording of an amazing voice singing old American folk songs - I called up and asked the people there who it was - it turned out to be JB and I've never forgotten it.
Her performance has a Roy Orbison quality to it. She doesn’t move from her spot for the entire 4 minute performance. No drama, no theatrics. She lets her voice dominate the stage and have 400,000 plus captivated and amazed. A talent not of this earth!
Every time I hear this song, I remember when I was in 2nd grade and my whole school was parading the streets singing that song. That song and moment was so special to me. I will never forget it.
I am so touched to see people young and old listening to the mesmerizing and inspirational Joan Baez. Below, I paste my posting from the UA-cam in which she sings this song in her kitchen. Please remember to also listen to and remember Leonard Cohen -- one of the most intelligent song writers of all time. Hallelujah, Leonard; we miss you! Posted on her recent version of We Shall Overcome: I sit here with tears in my eyes listening to the great Joan Baez during these days when we celebrate the memory of Leonard Cohen and the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Bob Dylan; as well as challenge the falsely acclaimed winning of the presidency by Donald Trump. While I sometimes miss the passing of the 60's, especially the music, I never expected them to return in this fashion. I was one of those New Yorkers who dropped everything in the summer of 1969 and flocked to Woodstock when I was working at a nearby summer camp at the ripe old age of 17! What a time it was. What a singer SHE was -- and still is. The world needs peaceful leaders like Joan Baez now MORE THAN EVER.
This song was a Civil Rights song/hymn in the sixties. As long as there are supremacists of any color, religion, nationality, we will not know peace in our world. That gives us all an imperative to teach and live a peaceful life. We can learn to forgive others and ourselves. We can overcome the evils of this world.
+Jennifer Trippeer I believe what you are saying. Someone has to break the circle of violence and hate. Someday a victim of violence WILL turn the other cheek and say I WILL NOT HATE YOU whatever you do.
+Jennifer Trippeer We need to overcome alcohol supremacism, including the perverse alcohol supremacism over cannabis. It's an obstacle to a more peaceful world in a variety of ways.
hello jennifer - with google I want to answer your wonderful comment - I'm blind, please forgive me mistakes while writing! When I heard your comment I had to cry - now I know that there are still people who think like me as well. - Only when we learn peace to teach and to live we can approach each other, forgive each other and help each other. People have to get away from their nationalist traditions and turn back to god, then they can find peace - with themselves and with their next ones, no matter which skin color or nationality he belongs! This is what a former professional soldier tells you - I know exactly what I'm writing about - we should never be too proud to ask for forgiveness. we should not condemn anyone, because whoever is without mistakes - throw the first stone - so I have read it in the holy word of God. that was great comfort! I wish you peace !!!
This song puts me at peace with humanity, and.. and.. an.. even love it. We are one fascinating species. Don't forget, we're not just human, we are humankind. That's two words, human and kind.
Thank you for this and all your other songs of freedom, Joan Beaz.
Hearing Baez sing this, I am once again a teenager at a Peace Rally. It's amazing how a simple song (and beautiful voice) can restore my hope for (if not faith in) humanity.
I think that there will always be people who have an open ear and a hungry heart and thay will remember this songs (I am one of the second generation) peace for all beings
However, deep the valley of despair, however, long the tunnel may seem this song gives me strength to never give up. Why? Because love has ultimately always triumphed over hate. It may take days, months, years, decades even centuries but man will one day overcome inequality and all men will get equal opportunities to live a better, fuller life. Thank you Pete Seeger, Joan Baez. Salute the African American Civil rights movement and all other movements to throw off the yoke of tyranny. You may call me a dreamer but I'm not the only one
She is singing in Woodstock Festival, It was the last of the 14 songs she sang, closing the first night (August 16, 1969), even she began to sing at 12.55 AM and continued to 2.00 AM, it means on August 17 th. Arlo Guthrie sang before Joan...and before Melanie........
On June 25, 2009, Baez created a special version of "We Shall Overcome" with a few lines of Persian lyrics in support of peaceful protests by Iranian people. She recorded it in her home and posted the video on UA-cam and on her personal website. She dedicated the song "Joe Hill", to the people of Iran during her concert at Merrill Auditorium, Portland, Maine on July 31, 2009. Love You Joan
Yes, Iran needs female-leader supremacism like in the west, LGBT parades, tattoos, censorship to protect these ideas and mega-corporations dumping 1000000 iPhones, BMWs --- to save humanity.
This lady (she truly deserves that title) was and is a shining light. She didn't just sing protests, she put herself in the front line of civil rights protests when police brutality was at its worst. We mere humans must bow in awe: we shall not look upon her like again.
My first time hearing this, and its tearing me up; just the idea that one day love and goodwill for our fellow man will conquer hate. I'm normally a very unemotional guy!!!
At '1970, Korean resistor(student) sang this song against park jeong hee (korean dictator) It was dark season. Lyrics was translated to korean. Good song .... Thanks to Joan Baes.
With the major governments of the world being the way they have been since World War One, we've needed this song long before it ever existed. We need it even more today it seems, but most new ears don't seem to care to hear it nor it's message.
This is by far the best and purest song ever made. This song tells the world how we shall live our life. And just the fact that this was from woodstock makes this the best version of them all! Love Joan Baez Love the 60´s Love Peace! All we are saying is give peach a chanse!
She gives me chills when she passes through different notes singing the chorus "deep in my heart I know that I do believe...". I have never listen something like this...
We with Asperger's can overcome our awkward and repulsive behaviors. I truly believe every one of us on the autism spectrum can, with the right mindset, overcome what social difficulties handicap us mentally, and which bring needless distress to those around us. A thousand thank yous to Joan Baez for this beautiful cover of a beautiful song.
This song always makes me want to cry. In a good way though. It's beautiful and gives me hope. I'm still in highschool but I hate all of the hate in the world and this kind of music makes me feel a little better. I hope someday everyone could just learn to live in peace and love. We WILL overcome.
I first learned about her music from my first science adviser. Ever since her music has been a link between music and science. What a dream to learn to play the guitar her way! I just read part of her impressive biography. It is impressive not only for her talent but for how much she has given to others through her music! Thank You Joan Baez for touching so many lives!
I am very glad to know this. at least my comment was useful for me to gather that her songs are still an important message for youth. thanks to all young people who still feel like this.

I went to artschool with Joanie at BU. She was just as much a naturally gifted visual artist. An amazing talent.
This song is timeless and never more needed than now in this crazy world
Every time I hear this song, I remember when I was in 2nd grade and my whole school was parading the streets singing that song. That song and moment was so special to me. I will never forget it.
My mother's favorite song. Missed you. We shall sing together in heaven someday!
We shall overcome someday.
So beautiful ! Made a grown man cry with pleasure!

I love Joan and her commitment to world peace. Thank you!
The sincerity in her eyes provides such a guiding light... if it doesnt give hope, i don't know what does.

Still praying for Iran and all the good Persian people. I know the people of Iran will eventually prevail.

don't thank. she was also against the shah. she doesn't know what she wants.
That's leftists, always wishes for best but bringing havoc.

One Person and so strong! Singing may be not the answer to the worlds problems but Joan Baez showed us a way!
Joan Baez is another favourite of me - her progressive attitude attract millions. I salute her.
Wonderful stuff .Beautiful lady with a beautiful voice.
What a touching song. It's so necessary these days when we still see terrible wars, death and destruction in the name of god money and power.
Sadly its not so much wars now but our politicians devotion to a UN/WEF agenda.
I was a kid when I listened this song for the first time and I never forgot it!
Thanks Joan. Sensational voice. A gift from God. Jesus is waiting and watching until the appointed time. He has already overcome.

It's amazing -- this is sung live without electronic tricks, echo chambers, or anything more complex than a guitar.

Sometimes in life I need a reboot / reset and this track does it well for me every time I feel so weighed down and defeated.
This song as brought me comfort and I really need it.
Me too
Joan is belting out that we are not afraid. I fear we have become so afraid we have lost sight of what Peace really brings humanity.

I have this on an old LP. I lived through the Vietnam Era and watched my friends die. My father, a career Army man, had to deliver the news to so many people. When he had to tell one of my girlfriends that her husband had been killed, he knew it was time to retire. However, all of us are proud of what the armed services have done, and we support them thoroughly. One of my son-in-laws was in the Navy, one in the marines, and my daughter was in the Army. A time when music spoke directly to the soul.
There can be nothing more comforting to ears than listen her singing a song which bring so much hope & desire to live more..

Much love to you my brother.
This song was substituted for our normal prayer during morning service at my traditional 'red brick' grammar school back in the mid-60s. I never found out why but the memory still stays with me.
Merci,Joan.
