    I gave this a try for one month. My concussion is the scratchy plastic pads not only dry out much faster than dirt but the worms don’t actually like living in them . The worms that stayed alive in the container that required more water adjustment more often preferred to live on the clear plastic container walls. Ok I should say I have a dehumidifier running in the fish room 24/7 which helps to explain the scrubbing pads drying out continuously, but it does not explain why the worms did not move onto or into the pads long term . Tossed the pads away yesterday and added fresh potting mix that seems to last 6 months at least without smell.

    What will happen if I use the “home brand” scouring pads? I actually didn’t know about the dangers of the cheaper ones until now… I’ve made spawning mops with them and had them floating with rice fish. They’re fine, but I just tried to buy more and the coles brand actually says not to use in aquariums 😮

    • @BlakesAquatics
      @BlakesAquatics  Рік тому +2

      Usually thats because they have mould inhibitors in them or some sort of artificial scent. Its just an extra unknown to account for but if you have some in use with no issues I wouldnt panic about those it might just affect some sensitive fish in some way

    Great vid thank you. I started a culture using a couple of old plastic donut containers and the scouring pads. I bought the worms on eBay and they came with coconut husks. I put the worms and a little bit of the husks on the pads. I couldn't really get them off of it and didn't want to damage them. So far they seem to be doing great! I haven't had much luck with them crawling on the feeding thing. it's only been about 4-5 days so far. Maybe it needs more time. Do you need to add any water on the bottom, or can it stay dry on the bottom?

      It's definitely easier to prevent mites by having different cultures than trying to get rid of mites. Once mites get into your culture they compete with worms for the food source and eventually can destroy the culture anyway.
