So consciousness isn't a single, basic property of the mind, like on/off switch - you either have it, or you don't - it's more of a spectrum? I remember old veterinarian dude back in the day on my university who was really rough with animals, saying that they do have whole "neurological tool set" to feel pain, but they don't have consciousness, so "they" are not suffering, because there's no one in there, they are like meat robots. When anybody tried to argue with him or show him some neurological/behavioral stuff about animals, he was always like "don't care, it's a philosophical stance, you can't prove or disprove they have observer inside!", since it really was on/off for him, no matter how intricate behaviors animals were showing or what neurobiology said, animals were just programmed, soulless robots for him. He was also hardcore catholic, I guess it explains a little his Cartesian fascinations... Anyway, video about the consciousness would be nice!
Yes, I see consciousness as a spectrum. Consciousness is basically the awareness of one's own thinking, with the fundament of consciousness being specifically the awareness of one's own temporality: that one day one will die. An introspective mind will be more conscious than one that is less so.

Christianity has destroyed a lot of nordic philosophy.
