- Deathsmiles I & II In-Depth Review (Switch, PS4, Xbox One) | Is It Worth It? In today's video, I take an in-depth look at the latest port of my favorite horizontal shoot em' up (shmup) of all time, Deathsmiles 1, and my not so favorite horizontal shmup Deathsmiles 2 Makai no Merry Christmas in their new collection! What is particularly interesting about this port is that both companies involved with it, Zerodiv and City Connection, have had some truly awful ports in that past such as the Psikyo Shooting Stars Collection and the Cotton 2 Tribute release (which had a whopping 11 frames of input lag). So the big question this time around is were they able to do this classic CAVE bullet hell justice, is the DLC worth it? or are we looking at another hot mess of a port? How does the input lag respond and is the slowdown accurate?

Could you test the input lag on that version, please?

Excellent comprehensive review that told me everything I needed to know. Glad to see the shmup getting such a wide release. It's a shame the lag is not quite as good as steam and 360 for expert players but 4 frames is more than fine for average Joe players such as myself.

Now that it's released on Steam, I'm finally checking out this review. From the Steam page, people are consistently saying that the slowdown in this port is MUCH closer to the X360 port, which is fantastic news. As a PC player, this sounds like a pretty wonderful port (especially considering CC and Zerodiv's reputations). I also see the devs in the Steam discussion threads, so they seem pretty dedicated to making a good port at least. Man, my standards for a good port these days are so low; I'm just happy they made a 1:1 port without breaking anything, even though they didn't add anything new (other than the DLC).
Speaking of which, the DLC is definitely WAY too costly. If it was $5, absolutely. $10? Maaaaybe. But $25 is nuts.
The same team that worked on this is doing Akai Katana next, which is also great considering MAME removed support for that game so it can't be emulated on recent versions anymore. Maybe there's a similar trick like SDOJ - where one is able to rename it as DFK and trick MAME into running it - but if it exists for Akai Katana, I'm not aware of it.
Edit: Saw Jaimers's tweet and apparently on Steam, it's 1f input lag. Insane! Definitely a must-get even for DS1 alone.
For sure it sounds like they made a lot of improvements on the steam version! I'll have to pick it up when it goes on sale (i'm not paying full price for deathsmiles again ha)
Amazing that between the 2008 360 version and almost 2022 PS4 version the input lag gets worse. So much for technology incrementally improving. Why can't the devs just include the retroarch run ahead latency reduction tech into these games to drop the input lag to zero?
yeah I do wonder why the ps4 version is as laggy as it is? the ps4 m2 ports are more responsive and they are using emulation, crazy.
That would require them to actually care and is not the cash grab ways.

Glad to hear this game came out overall solid. Despite having it on Steam, I really like having physical copies of games I like, so I'll be adding this to my Switch collection. Im also looking forward to trying the sequel. I dont think the graphics look too too bad, but I 100% understand your opinion of them. They come from that awkward time period where companies were trying to implement 3d elements and models into even their 2d games, and the results definitely varied a bit. Most didn't age well.
Yes ha I think cave decided to try something new with ds2 and it sorta blew up in their faces, graphics wise at least
Nice, after expecting Cotton Saturn Tribute levels of ass, I'm glad to hear this will be playable on my switch and my $100 will not just have been for the CE bonuses.

I bought it digitally for PS4, the game plays, looks and feels great in every way. It's a solid port of a masterpiece that I wouldn't be able to experience and enjoy if it didn't come to modern consoles (tough times for me too). The best part is that the game was-is available at launch WORLDWIDE and EVERYWHERE, I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it available in the European PSN!
The majority can't afford every single gaming platform (PC, next gen+retro consoles) and most people I know just refuse to go through the Japanese account - Japanese yen card hustle so releases like this should be celebrated even if they aren't perfect.
that is cool that the game has been made available everywhere on all consoles, pretty refreshing compared to all the japan only releases lately.
Yes, you make a very good point. The port comparisons are definitely helpful as a foundation, but it's always good to look at each port on its own merits since it might be the only option for someone that isnt a retro collector or pc gamer.

For me the graphics are a huge huge reason why, it s just an ugly one compared to the og version. The gameplay is pretty different but for me the graphics are the issue
I actually don't mind the graphics (which I understand why people don't like) and the scoring system was the 1st that really clicked with my brain.

The DLC will come included with the Strictly Limited physical version, but that won’t be out till March. Personally, I ‘m getting that version, but they are almost sold out.
I wasn't expecting miracles so this is good news to hear. I am interested in playing Deathsmiles 2 as I've never played it before.
An aside on Deathsmiles 1: I think the idea that it's an easy 1CC is a bit overblown. Maybe easy compared to other Cave games, but that final stage is a wall and I've gotten there deathless before and still lost a continue (on the Steam version, never played the 360 version). To this day I still haven't cleared it; I'll give it another go when my preorder arrives.
If you dont know about the refill yet; kill Jitterbug without bombing and Tyranosatan will give you a 2 lives refill. A trick that helped me clearing it for the first time in the past.
yes the ease of the game is definitely relative ha, there are still much easier shmups out there then ds1 rank 1
Just got it for switch. Your review is pretty good! Big fan of Deathsmiles! First time playing Deathsmiles 2. I must say it’s quite a bit easier than the first. Your ‘hit box’ is much smaller although makes for some crazy action scenes, especially rank 3, it does make it notably easier game.
The best version is Mega Black Label in my opinion. So many different variations you can do with your familiar. New character added. It’s also quite challenging and longer than 2. The enhancements over the first one also make it the best, since the first one is already better than 2.
On Switch there is some lag when screen gets chaotic. It leads to gameplay since you can kind of ‘matrix’ your way around the bullets when things get crazy and trust me they get CRAZY!
It’s a very colorful action filled game. Love the gothic feel even what’s presented in 2. It’s worth the price of admission.

Just picked up DS 1&2 bundle on the switch for €20. Its my first proper Shmup since rtype 3 on the super nes. Trying to get back into the genre. 🙂
I'm psyched to hear this version is at least acceptable. The slowdown accuracy is what kept me from getting into the Steam version.

Thank you so much for making this, was exactly what I was looking for. Currently trying to play Deathsmiles and it's just not emulating well on Xenia for me on the 360 platform, but it seems to have so many nice extras over the Arcade release. So was looking at Switch and I am always weary of Switch games for performance and graphics, but I would prefer to the Series X or PS4 for the portability but needed the details on what version is best and why. So while you didn't get the latency numbers for Switch, I think it's safe to assume it will probably be worse than the other modern releases.

I love DS. My 360 (Recently Red Ringed, RIP) still got the Deathsmiles Faceplate on it and it's one of two 360 games I still physically own. (The other is a shmup that's region free on the 360) I finally got to play the switch ports yesterday. DS one is just as I remembered it. Looking cool, fun to play and hard as hell even on LV1. Maybe I just suck. Also this game is the reason why I hate suicide bullets. DS2 has actually taking up most of my time so far as I'm trying to beat LV3 arranged. Something about the screen filled with bullets and in slow mo is oddly fascinating. Really curious about the DLC but it'll wait until after I'm done with DS2.
Yes DS is my fav horizontal shmup as well! I definitely need to start to get into the scoring of the game more, level 999 looks insane ha
about to buy this on the switch, i'm hyped! i'm not much of a shmup guy but the character designs and lore in this have won my heart so much that i'm willing to try and get good at one, lol

I‘ve been playing Deathsmiles on my iPhone. Easily my favorite horizontal shmup as well. Everything is just so unique and fun.

Deathsmiles 2 still has issues. The visuals are messed up still - the black level is super off (very dark) crushing all the detail in the image. And I’m not an expert on X but it seems to be the same (missing slowdown) as before the patch

@@CorinianSalame, which means that it's on both considering that they ported it to American consoles much later. I wonder if the English disc has the patch from the jump.

Deathsmiles II I actually like quite a bit but all renditions have the visual issue still so that’s a big bummer for me. The visual issue is not present on switch so if I had the opportunity I would get switch instead.

Just ordered a Japan copy on physical - it'll be here in 8 days which is Dec 30th (same day as uk eshop release date) - i prefer to have the immortals physically and it didn't cost much more.
I'll live without the DLC for now - but it's a cool option to have somewhere down the road.
Strictly Limited is still taking preorders as of now - but you'll wait til March for that.
They missed a trick by not releasing this at Halloween or even before Xmas!

Checking this out now. I was looking into picking up Death Smiles 2 as Im getting into bullet hell recently and own DS 1 and Akai Katana on the 360 (the cheaper CAVE games). Im not sure if the japanese DS2 will work on my old 360 or my Series X. Any idea? Is this DS 1 and 2 collection digital only? I didnt see a physical listed anywhere. If I remember right some japanese games work on the 360 despite it being mostly region locked. I have the OG 360 as well as a Series X, along with any other modern consoles, if physicals exist there.

Hello! I've been watching a lot of your videos lately. Because I've had another child and it's hard to find time to play. I already have four children, dog, cat, a job and a wife. So shoot em up games are what I've played almost exclusively for the last 10 years. as there is room to play for a short time on them. also it has always been many favorite genre. I like to collect physical shoot em up games. i have most of them for mega drive, saturn, dreamcast and xbox 360. mostly the japanese version because their covers make me happy. now that I watch your videos and don't get annoyed by them. because I did in the beginning. the experience was that there was a bit of elitism in them regarding shoot em up. But now that I've watched more videos and listened to the content, it's not like that. You make fantastic content. I've noticed that I've always liked toaplan a lot and Cave. while I think several other game developers are good. Your videos have made me want to run M2's releases. I just got esp ra de for ps4 and also lime wires dodonpachi resurrection for the switch. Which games of caves released for ps4/ps5 or switch are the best to start with? if I want to start getting good at cave's game. geek out on and play for high scores. greetings Emil from Sweden
I'm a little confused with how the difficulty selection works in Deathsmiles 1. Before each stage you select either level 1, 2 or 3 which is simple, but there is also a difficulty setting in the options menu. Does one of these settings override the other or do they stack/work together somehow?

a question though: do you know if this includes the deathsmiles iix music content pack dlc that was available for the xbox 360? the artists are even credited in the iix credits, and i can't find a bgm setting in any of the options...

I've been waiting for your review before buying the switch version. This was a pleasant surprise. I thought it was gonna be a "no no no" but it seems to be an okay port. I'm not convinced though. Already own the 360 version, but it would be fun to play in handheld... I don't know...

Ha yes zerodiv def did a better job then they have in the past, I do need to give them that. But yeah I'm not sure if it's really a lock in if you already own the 360 version, I do think the handheld aspect is probably the biggest selling point for switch
My first introduction to deathsmiles is the ios version. I enjoyed it cause it had a special mode where it's kind of like an rpg? Was hoping this would have that but from what I skimmed through it seems not.
Anyways I'll just go back to playing my ios version then since I only really play that game mode (never arcade) because there's nothing more satisfying than getting max combo meter (or whatever bonus multiplier) and then one shoting everything in the game except bosses. (curse ring build I believe haven't booted the game in a long time).
I love the iOS version. The incentive to collect all the items got me to play the game several times and get good at it. I wish more shooters had this type of light RPG element.
9:36 the screen zooming issue was fixxed on switch but on the 1.0 it was as buggy as on ps4

I agree that DS1 is the better game all day (my fav side-scrolling shmup too!), but I still really like DS2. Despite having the 360 version, I actually opted to get this collection physically (Strictly Limited) for Switch for 3 reasons: 1) DS2 can now also be in English 2) DLC chracters 3) Being able to have DS playable on the go with the switch. Yeah I think ds2 is a solid game, I just don't like the way it looks ha
You missed one port. It was on mobile at one point and it had a new original character, which was this rich girl whose powers I forgot, but it was pretty nice.
Even though its a bit overpriced for the DLC, its worth every cent for me, but what can you do? Just need to experiment with the character DLC a bit more, who knows, this may be a cheat method for getting a 1CC (literally). I do know one character is similar to Rosa except the shot can now go through terrain (I think Rosalie) (similar to the wave power up in Darius) making it easier to play with and the lockon shot is not a reverse type.
Also, you can mix and match the DLC music with the Deathsmiles music to make things more fun and interesting! There were a few slowdown issues but nothing major to impact gameplay.
Finally, with the English translation to Deathsmiles II is hilarious as we now see the boss descriptions from the Japanese text! Gonna get the Switch version now because I now have an arcade stick for the Switch now making it a breeze to play shmups and more in future! (P.S. The Switch Version of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu, the Arrange A has no slowdown whatsoever and feels like a copy paste version of the steam version)

Even if you don't like Death Smiles II, which is fair enough, as a European I'm happy that they released it. The original Death Smiles was released in Pal on the 360 but the sequel was Japan only AND region locked. Btw did City Connection ever improve the lag in the Cotton releases? Specifically the PS4 versions. Would be happy to know if anyone knows.
I haven't heard about any cotton 2 improvements, I ll keep an eye out for them though :-)
They need to patch the PS4 screen options bug, because that's a graphical error that affects the games presentation how it looks and ultimately how it plays.

I have the 360 game, not enough in this release to warrant a purchase. Cotton Rock n Roll is out soon, I'll see how that one comes out.

I know it's great for these games to reach a wider audience but I would prefer to see arcade titles which have never seen a release, new games or pc only titles like zero ranger get on consoles.

My copy of the Japanese Switch collectors addition came in the other day and it just came with a DLC code along with the extra goodies (would've been better if it was just in the cart but oh well)
I know I'm probably better off just playing the versions that I already own but idk portable Deathsmiles is worth it to me. And I've kinda been buying all of these on switch anyways so might as well (yes that includes Cotton Saturn tribute..... I hope they give the input lag on that seriously)
Yeah I think handheld mode is a great reason to buy since this game is perfect for the switch being horizontal and all :-)
Slowdown accuracy doesn’t mean much to me as I mostly played LVL 3 Normal, which is very doable. MBL 999 though... different story!

Mannn I usually buy my shmups on Switch but decided to be safe with this one and pre ordered the PS4 version. I was a little skeptical on how performance would be.
Gotta say that it is a disappointment that it has the zoom % bug which will undoubtedly be on disc.
Yeah hopefully they will patch it but yes it will be screen bugged on the disc, odd oversight
Is it worth it if you have a 360 Rising Star version of Deathsmiles? Number II never came to Europe, it's the weaker game but I'm rather torn - probably rather go for the Psikyo collections I reckon..
If you have the 360 version, there is no need to buy this version. I like the 360 version better and the dlc is meh

The feature missing that will keep me from buying this edition immediately is the online Co-Op. why couldn’t it be there, in this time of a complete lack of online Co-Ops in Shmups. Really frustrating
yeah no kidding, that's should be more of a thing! If you get the pc version you can do it via parsec, though the bullet hell will destroy your bit-rate ha

No I don't believe that you can. I check in game and on the website and I couldn't find a way to do so.

I still wonder why they took the decision of making DS2 a 3d game, ive tried to enjoy it but i can't, the lack of art style a crude polygons completely take me out of the experience, which almost never happens to me with any game.

I own the Steam version of Deathsmiles 1 but I will still probably pick this up because I have never played Deathsmiles 2 and I don't own an Xbox so the PS4 version is the only way I can play 2. I'm kind of on the fence about the DLC, I'll probably decide on that later. I was really waiting to hear about the input lag and I can probably live with 4 frames, I probably won't even notice the difference between 2 1/2 and 4 so it should be fine. Thanks again for the review.
Yeah four frames is acceptable, I will make a fuss about it with my own personal taste, but 4 is passable for sure ha. Also yeah I d say keep an eye on the dlc (maybe people find cool stuff with the characters) but I don t think you need to jump on it

i agree with you that its one of the best horizontal shmups out there, but i gotta laugh though about the marketing bit, its almost like japan has more artistic freedom then the west. reminds me of the letter the un tried to make japan ban "sexualized depictions of women" in manga, and beautiful enough, the head of the women's manga artists association wrong a extremely polite, but scathing reply to them about how they were infringing on womens rights, especially when many of those artists are women themselves, etc. either way thanks for the video i enjoyed it

I pre-ordered the Switch version, but I was curious about the Xbox 360 version... an occasion came so I bought a used Xbox 360 slim at an incredible bargain, I'm enjoying the game more on that console now, I must confess! I love Deathsmiles, the first, not the second one, as for you the graphics is a huge deterrent for me as well... I wish all the sprites, the level design an the background on the second could be reworked as 2d instead of 3d with the quality and beauty of the first episode!

Might get it physically on switch. Even though it probably is laggier. For me I’m usually a survival type player so not a scoring person so it’s not that big of a deal for me. 5 is pushing it but not terrible. The pc engine mini somewhat got me use to input lag
yeah 5 isn't great, but it's much much better then 7 ha.

Dude I love your videos, although I think you are sometimes very harsh on your thoughts on shooters sometimes haha. But I can see your passion for these games is refreshing in a way because I think in a way people just don't see the greatness of these games. I must say though, death smiles is one of my favorite side scrolling shooters ever too haha. I must say as far as the looks go I never resized that there must have been some great love from cave to make this game look the way it does. And strangely enough, but to my enjoyment cotton reboot kind of seems like they acknowledged the fact cave clearly praised the style that cotton stared with haha

I pre ordered the jp version, I wonder if it will include the DLC. Also day one dlc for stuff that they added to an old game is really ridiculous. Sounds like they did the bare minimum to port it and then slap a shitty DLC to it, really bad.
Yep, I feel like they should have included it in the base package honestly, and maybe charged $5 for the extra ost or something, paying $65 for the whole thing, when I already own the game twice, feels excessive.

I have Deathsmiles 1 and 2 for switch is a pretty good port
So I finally got my deathsmiles collection for switch. I always try out the game before downloading patches. And guess what. That ps4 issue with stretching the screen is present on switch before updating 🤬🤬🤬 safe to say I'm done with city connection games. Should have just stuck with my 360 copy.
Dude thank you for saying this! Just received my PS4 edition and was going to return it due to the zoom issue being on disc and exchange it for the switch version. But if it’s on the switch version cart as well then I might as well just wait for the PS4 patch’

It's the lighting, I'm using some really high contrast so it makes my eyes and hair look really dark. I could probably get more sleep though ha
