*Hears how you pronounce "Natsuki Chronicles"* Good thing this isn't Twitter where the radical lefties would try to cancel you for that... right after they attack someone for assigning gender to a potato without it's consent. Twitter be like: "This man is clearly trying to chronicle hate crimes as a dogwhistle for white supremacy!"
Also, lol at your comment for millenials at 28:59. I have a feeling you were just giving sincere commentary, but at the same time it can come off like a passive dunk on millenials lol.
@@gamergate2.0andbooks From this developer? That’s hard they’re all good. Natsuki Chronicles has a great easy mode so is good for learning and lets you slowly progress at your own pace. And had a ton of content. Eschatos is my personal favorite for arcade style shmups from them but isn’t quite as friendly to beginners. I just love the game.
I don' t think i i have never watched a 40 minutes video without jumping forward at some point ,this video is pure gold and with super high quality , you are an amazing youtuber and one of the few worth following , the " someone maybe doesn't like sex" line almost killed me , my complimente sir you a great job looking forward for future videos
Thanks man that's very kind of you. I have a really good time making them despite the amount of work, so they end up long, and that's after I already trim out the fat haha. I think my longest video was the Capcom Arcade Stadium and lots of people watched the whole thing there too. I'll do my best to keep up the quality and glad you're enjoying them.
I saw that! Super exciting that release is getting a physical and they are the ones handling it. Out of all the limited print companies out there I definitely prefer SLG.
Yeah it was a play on words, since the developer QUTE is pronounced the same way. Thought it was a creative way to title it. I can see lots of people watching the video and thinking hey, these aren't cute em ups wth is this? But it's got the titles of the games right in the thumbnail so it wasn't a bait and switch 😅
You and HAUSER would get along quite well. I was really blown away the game is just so good. And I've only got about 3 or so hours into it so far, so I still have more to explore. But I can see myself just firing it up and playing for fun on a regular basis with the music cranked up.
Dude, I gotta say a thank you for making this video and introducing me to this trio of amazing games that I had no idea existed before this! I'm loving Eschatos and Ginga Force, and cannot wait to play Natsuki Chronicles next! To @Hauser, thank you for these incredible shooters!!
Really well made video. I love QUTE designs and M-KAI passion in programming & design. ESCHATOS is the "modern Space Invaders" to me. It captures the purest essentia of vertical shooting, it's a journey of excellence and perfect rhythm.
That’s a great comparison and I agree completely. Eschatos is pure. And that section in the game with the homage to space invaders was one of my favorite. It will be one of my most played games now for a long time. I still have much to discover within it.
Got this yesterday I LOVE IT! it also came with Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins which was definitely worth the price all three are fun as hell hopefully they port Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles to the switch one day
Finally got into Eschatos today. First time round I played straight after completing Natsuki Chronicles (awesome game). But after being on my xbox with just Gigawing and Progear to play I was forced to play some bullet hell which I ended up getting hooked on, even though I prefer more traditional horizontals. Going back to play Eschatos I was more prepared for the quicker pace of it...sooo much fun and original, literally like being on a rollercoater. Another great upload. Will defo end up doing the whole trilogy.
I learned about these games when going through VGM I hadn't heard of before about 5 years ago, and Yousuke Yasui's tracks made me *really* wanna play them. Skip ahead to this month, I finally found the perfect clue to pick up the Seventia bundle on Steam. And I have to say. My thumbs are SORE. But my soul is happy. Ginga Force is an absolute blast, and I'll be definitely picking up Eschatos at some point.
Thanks for insisting. I bought this for my steamdeck hoping it would run (it does). This shmup is pure joy, giving you the biggest ever instant smile on your face. I LOVE the music as well.
You’re welcome! This company makes some amazing games and really the best new shmup developer working today. I’m always anticipating their next release.
@@ShmupJunkie Got Natsuki and Ginga as well. Both work well on the Steamdeck too, despite Ginga being officially listed as unsupported. Looks like I've got some serious alien killing to do. Thanks again, these are all so satisfying games.
I have just preordered natsuki & ginga, I didn't even know these were being released until I saw this video so big thanks for that! Such great content as always buddy and I genuinely get hyped to see a new video from you.
Awesome really glad to hear you jumped on these. Hopefully the video gives you a good idea of what to expect. You'll be getting a ton of gameplay and hours out of these two with their depth and content. And I'm always equally hyped that so many are enjoying the videos.
@@ralfvanbogaert3451 makes sense that last bit of content often is. But once you are so close it’s hard to resist finishing it up. The most pricey items in Ginga were high too I haven’t unlocked nearly them all yet.
While I’ve always enjoyed shmups my entire gaming life, your channel has reignited my love for this genre. Favorite shmups: MUSHA, Axelay, thunder force 3 and 4, R-type, Dodopachi series (just about anything from Cave), Ikaruga, Gradius V, Blazing Star, Crimson Clover, Progear, Life force and Salamander 2. Great channel man, enjoying your content.
Warms my heart to hear that no joke. I’m really trying to get those of us who love these games back into them as I’m the same way. I hadn’t played the genre too much over the last decade plus before rediscovering how much I enjoyed them and why. Sharing that and even bringing in some new blood has been the driving force. You’ve got good taste a nice mix of the old and more modern. Only over the last couple years did I more seriously give Cave style games a chance and glad I did, as I found some to be fantastic and become some of my favs.
@@ShmupJunkie Watching you play is awe inspiring. The scenes where you bob and weave through a torrent of bullets is insane. I am sure that you have plenty of practice and only post clips of your very best runs...but still...whoah.
@@gtssage It’s that way with all shmups for all of us. We have to do a lot of practicing and dying on any game before we get good at them. I do a lot of that in my top 5 hardest series of videos as they’re often games I’ve played a lot more so I know them well. But we all started out looking like a scrub when learning it haha
@@ShmupJunkie Based on your video I picked up Eschatos yesterday. Thank you for introducing this great shmup to me. I will surely check out Qute’s other games soon.
Great video as always bro. I love Qute's style, those are games that are very newbie friendly and with tons of action and great tunes. My fav of the bunch is Ginga Force because while I haven't beaten hard mode (only 2 stages left) it made me feel a little more confident as a player and I trully felt the progress on each stage. Eschatos is great indeed, an adrenaline rush and a more straight forward experience. Natsuki Chronicles is also awesome and yeah, it's like a mix of the best of Ginga Force and a little Thunder Force for me. Can't wait to see more from Qute in the future, and I hope their hard work and love for the genre inspire more teams and developers to give STGs a chance, after all, IMO, Shmups is the purest of all genres.
Thanks man. Now that I’ve gotten to play and enjoy these 3 games I’ll definitely be looking forward to any new release by them. And also curious to see what they do next given each game has changed and evolved somehow. I’ve not touched the hard modes at all yet and hear they come into their own even more once you do. I only wish I had some more time to play them now before having to move onto the next video and set of games. Damn the backlog!
I caught this video about a week ago and upon seeing footage of Eschatos was immediately intrigued and hopped on steam and grabbed it. I just got my first ever 1cc on Original Easy this afternoon, and am pretty stoked about it. Big thanks for showing the game off!
Hey man! No worries I’m glad you caught it and enjoyed it. I was really glad to spotlight this company they’ll really fantastic. I can only look forward to what comes next from them someday. I hope Natsuki sells well. They are a weird company in that they sell health consulting services and do the games on the side for fun. So luckily they have other streams of income. It’s interesting to see the website with that and the games right next to each other.
I only have about 2-3hrs into it so far, so I finished it on advanced endless but not a normal 1cc yet. I definitely will keep playing regularly now as I just enjoyed it so much. The kind of game I can see myself playing on the regular for fun.
The greatest thing on UA-cam is this recommendation to play Eschatos. The greatest thing of the shmup genre is the masterpiece known as Eschatos. The greatest thing that came out of the video game industry is the release by Qute of Eschatos. The greatest thing that mankind has accomplished may very well be Eschatos.
Thanks for making this. Not enough people are familiar with Qute's work. Im really looking forward to getting my copies of Ginga Force and Natsuki from First Press Games.
I have some very vocal QUTE supporters on my discord so it was bound to happen, and once I loved Eschatos as much as I did it was a forgone conclusion. I'm excited to see what they come up with next someday. Whether it follows the formula they set with these last two or something completely different.
Great video. Last week I started playing Natsuki. It is really great. Just finished easy mode story. Now it is time to grind. Keep it on, you are a source of great insight and entertainment.
Thanks man. Appreciate that. And glad you've been enjoying it. Normal isn't too bad either you'll totally get it, just takes more practice runs on every stage to get it down. Plus the extra shields it throws you doesn't hurt. I've seen some video of the hard and extra modes and that's gettin' a bit beyond my paygrade haha.
Thanks man! Especially that first one if I didn’t make it clear enough 🤣. It’s only 15 bucks on Steam so I usually recommend that. The xbox360 physical is big bucks.
@@ShmupJunkie Yeah I went to ebay after watching and discovered that pretty quickly! I wish I'd had someone to tell me to play it when I could buy it at the release price! I think I'll settle for the Steam version :)
I wish I had played them back then but I missed out. So it was a treat finally getting to. If you enjoyed Ginga I've no doubt Natsuki is right up your alley too
@@ShmupJunkie I've been considering getting Natsuki Chronicles for some time now, though I've also been somewhat hesitant in getting it due to the fact that the game is basically a side-story to Ginga Force.
@@SolCresta3405 The story in both was always ok for me but once I played it more I turned off the voice since you can only hear it so much. Natsuki has a good arcade mode which I enjoyed too. It’s nice to have both options. You’ll see it’s a bit more streamlined vs Ginga. But being horizontal it’s different enough where it’s not just the same game with a side story. It’s cool how they keep changing up each game and not just remaking and updating the same code. Way more work you gotta respect that.
Love Qute, such great games that just feel really good and the music keeps you going. My Eschatos Original Normal score is probably still my proudest achievement in a shmup to date.
Yeah I would be so stoked to see it come out there, but it's not going to happen I think. Qute hasn't released a single one of their games on Switch yet, they stick to Xbox and PS4 it seems. But at least they also release on Steam which is nice. That's where I got mine.
This video gets me hyped for all three games! As always you go the extra mile with your video and don't just review a game, but the whole trilogy. Much appreciated! #QuteNatsuki4Me
Thanks and I appreciate the good words and feedback. If I tried to review one game at a time it would take forever and I may not even get to them all so I really wanted to do one big video. Plus I didn't see anything else on youtube with a history and background on all their games and Mkai so it was a perfect opportunity. Just added you to the list for the giveaway. 👍
He forgot to bring up Judgement Silversword, their first title originally developed for the WonderSwan but it's on the 360 and Steam now. It came with another game inside called Cardinal Sins. They also published a jrpg for the Wonderswan in JP but it's technically not their game so I believe it's still exclusive to the WonderSwan. Everything else is mentioned in this well put together video. Small company so they haven't done more.
@@Manic_Panic I have a history section right after Eschatos that talks about JS, Cardinal Sins, and even his first games Kyokugen and Pleasure Hearts. I didn’t get to go in depth with them for time constraints but I did a history section here. You can see it in the chapter list. 👍🏻
Thank you. It's hard for me to make a video I'm not excited or interested in, so it comes across when I am. Eschatos was so exceptional it's hard not to.
I love how Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles give me something to chew on as a shmup fan in a way that no other game does. I love shmups, but they can be repetitive to practice, in a way that limits how long I can play them in one sitting without getting bored or fatigued. I found the depth added with Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles to be really refreshing as a shmup fan, because each playthrough of a level feels rewarding. You're always getting more cash for new ship parts to experiment with, and that supplements replaying stages very well. That in combination with the ranking system makes it addicting to replay stages with different load-outs to get those tasty S ranks. It makes mastering the game a fun journey of growth, rather than beating myself over the head with the same stages in a Cave game until I get it right or whatever. It certainly helps that the presentation is so visually pleasing with its colorful ships, lasers, and environments making it super easy on the eyes.
Love to see new games like these and learn about companies such as MKAi and QUTE, its origins and how they became related. Eschatos looks awesome and so does Natsuki Chronicles; Ginga Force looks great too but the others are more fond to my type of shooters!! Fantastic video my friend, always a pleasure of watching them and since I was out of town, now I got to see two videos in the weekend LOL! #QuteNatsuki4Me 👍👍
Hey dude I'm glad you enjoyed it. This company has a big following, but at the same time they are new enough where a lot of us old school gamers missed their work or aren't familiar. You can count me as one of them until I finally took time to play them all. Definitely the old school flavor and I enjoyed them. Now tomorrow you have the opposite, Rtype, something everybody knows even those that don't play shooters. I just added you to the list my dude and will keep my fingers crossed for you 👍
Woo Hoo! Just completed Eschatos today, I'm honestly struggling to find many games that are better than this. I took advice from the Schmup Junkie's 7 day course for beginners and warm up with Touhou on easy mode for breakfast each day. I can get Ginga Force and complete the trilogy now.
Congratulations dude, Eschatos is awesome. And yes it's hard to find games to match once you've finished ones that good. Ginga Force is the hardest of the trilogy. Take your time and enjoy it. All of their games are fantastic. Good to know you now eat Touhou for breakfast haha
@@ShmupJunkie I can't believe I'm saying this after 19-20 hours of pure grinding on Ginga Forceto just get to level 7 on easy (easy my ass), I love it as much as Eschatos. The schmup that converter me to the genre was Sky Force Reloaded, similar in some ways to Ginga force...short levels, grinding to beef your ship up. The OST is great but not as good as Eschatos. I love how diffferent achievements give you more lives to start with like on Natsuki. Everytime I die I go to stop I end up going back for more. By far the most effort I've put into a game. I brought Raging Blasters for therapy when I burn out, lol.,
@@ianjacka469 I appreciate you sharing that with me as it’s awesome to hear you got so much enjoyment out of all three games including Natsuki. Ginga Force is absolutely hard, much moreso than the others. Even on easy. Not everyone gets on with Ginga so I’m glad you found it so worthwhile to put time into. That soundtrack is still fire. But the best part is they pull off the rare feat of combining what many consider “euro shmup” elements like grinding stages for upgrades along with top tier gameplay mechanics. Very few games do it all well. Qute really is the best dev in the game right now when it comes to that and pushing the genre forward.
Getting my 360 modded last year was finally a way for me to experience many of these awesome shooters. I'm glad to be able to play them now, especially Gingaforce and Eschatos, but I also wish I'd been more aware of them at the time they were released. Better late than never though I guess! Great video mate, really enjoyed it.
Hey buddy! You and me both I didn't play them back on my X360 either and not sure why. I would have gone gaga over Eschatos then too. I'm glad you have a way to play them and it's the reason I keep my modded 360 too (and my fingers crossed it doesn't melt 😂).
Awesome! Yes, and Eschatos released on modern consoles as well finally. Every one of their games is phenomenal. At this point any time they announce a new game it's something the entire shmup community looks forward to. They're the best dedicated shmup developer working today tbh.
You really know how to convince me for the games haha. I even preordered the Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles CDs to keep in my music collection. Can't wait to play these games! #QuteNatsuki4Me
Dang I know I'm brining the hype but that's impressive to hear. I must be doing something right. You won't regret the music CDs man they are all special. I really wish I could find an Eschatos one as it's so phenomenal. I just added you to the list so good luck!
@@ShmupJunkie I know it won't be the same as having the physical product but on steam they have the Eschatos OST for sale and it comes in FLAC files. Same quality as CDs. I bought it mostly to support the devs.
I've played Eschatos to death dude, but watching your video makes me want to replay it again and again! Still have to dive in Ginga and Natsuki, and can't wait to try that experimental take on the genre, with rpg elements. Awesome video!
Just hearing the music makes me want to play it now instantly haha. Yeah I can't wait to spend more time with it soon. Love the game. Natsuki is fun man I think you'll like it, pretty easy to get into. I'm glad I got to try them all out finally the last couple weeks.
Thanks! Last year was great for shmup releases and this year is looking just as big. I'm looking forward to lots more to highlight. Never running out of content anytime soon.
Man, I love to start my Mondays (due to the timezone difference) with your videos. I makes me feel like we are living a STG golden age right now. #QuteNatsuki4me
We are living in a mini resurgence and I’m happy to be a small part of it 🔥. I hope it keeps growing and becomes even more. Glad to give you some morning entertainment. You are on the giveaway list now my friend 🙌🏻
Really good reveiw. Man the music on the games sold me on its own. Definitely going to have to try out Eschatos sooner rather than later, it looks like it actually pulls off the 3D space well, unlike certain other shmups...
You'll dig it man I know it. And it's very much like Raystorm where the 3D is mostly effect, you're playing on a 2D plane 95% of the time. You're right the music alone is worth it. Very worth grabbing on Steam for the 15 bucks since the X360 version is so dang expensive.
I watched again this video... because of the announcement Eschatos will finally be ported on Switch soon... on the 18th of November on the japanese Eshop, then on Ps4 and even in the West soon or later... I'm so happy to be able to play it!!!!
You won't be disappointed it's quite a game. And I'm really glad too it's finally coming to modern consoles. I'll be buying it again just to support them.
Just found this video the other day after 100% ginga force and natsuki chronicles!! It’s convinced me to play eschatos, so i looked on the PSN store and it’s just been announced ! So guess what….. I’M GOING TO PLAY ESCHATOS. Great reviews 👍
Your videos always put a smile on my face bc they are always a labor of love or at least that's what they feel like to me. It's 40 minutes of my life well spent. I have Eschatos for my XBOX360 but didn't put a lot of time into it when I purchased the game. Now, with your recommendation and subconscious directive, I will take it out and try to give it the love it deserves. #QuteNatsuki4Me #PlayEschatos
During last year I completed a small collection of shmups that many friends had been recommending to me for a long time, one of them is Eschatos. Since I played it I fell in love immediately, the patterns, the intensity, the transitions of the music as you advance through levels, everything in the game is very beautiful and along with Cave, and after having tried Judgement Silversword, I have tried to follow very closely everything that Qute... With nothing more to say, other than Play Eschatos. Great video about them. #QuteNatsuki4Me
I only wish I had played it long ago as I missed out on so many years of playing it on higher levels and improving. But now I have a whole new experience to enjoy. Almost makes you wish you could forget it and enjoy it again like the first. I'll be following any QUTE release like a hawk now as well with how good these games were. But really that's all it comes down to in the end, is Play Eschatos haha. Just added you to the prize drawing too. Good luck! 👍
I am not too fond of the 2.5-3D visual on Eschatos, but wow the Soundtrack is mind-blowing and the gameplay is tight, definitively I will check it out, I might change my mind on the visuals, but hey if the a game has great sound and good gameplay the visuals are secondary in my book. #QuteNatsuki4Me
I would say 95% of the game is straight/flat 2D, only the backgrounds give the impression of that. You are always playing on a traditional 2D plane. Maybe 5% of the time like you see in the video it switches to a pseudo 3d view when it transitions between things, but the majority is traditional 2D shmup mechanics. The gameplay is beyond tight and has a lot of depth, it's definitely not style over substance.
Back when Starfox came out I played the hell out of it. I actually would play it almost asleep and my friends couldn't believe I was as good as I was at it. But Starfox is an easy game. Later I got Silpheed on Sega CD and that blew me away. I love the 2.5 3D visuals if done correctly. I miss Silpheed. I wish for a remaster or sequel. I did play Silpheed Alternative for a short time on Android before support for newer mobile devices went away. 😢 The Sega CD version is always in my heart.
@@robertlawrence9000 I remember drooling over those SegaCD Silpheed shots when it released and wished I could play it. Never did though until just a few years ago when I finally got a copy and now using a MegaSD. It was impressive to see anything like it at the time.
I hope Qute eventually understand that most of their audience is on the Nintendo Switch, not the PC. I would definitely buy these games if they ported them. People in their 30s, 40s and 50s play games on the Nintendo Switch, which is a haven for the classics they grew up with, as well as new retro-inspired games.
I would love nothing more than to see them on Switch, but it doesn't seem QUTE intends to port to the platform. Not sure why. But maybe now that they expanded to PS4 after being Xbox exclusive for so long it'll happen. You know I will push that with anyone there if I ever got the chance.
natsuki chronicles is great for me because i'm not new to shmups i just never played enough to get good and the leveling and easy repetition of the stages is helping me get better.
Man, I am going to need to hit the lottery with all the shooters I want to buy lately. Then I have to figure out how to live long enough to play them all.
haha I hear you on that, the backlog is real. That's why it took me so long to get to these. At least you have a shot at winning a free copy of Natsuki if you want it.
Finally got to try Natsuki Chronicles at a friends house and I do enjoy it quite a bit. It's like playing Ginga Force from a side view lol. It's basically a sequel. Music is so similar to the other Qute games and done by the same composer so I dig it. Gonna try it again here soon! Awesome stuff!
Agreed it's very much like Ginga and I had a blast with it, even more I think. Something about it felt a bit less "grindy" if that's a word haha. And it was fun just jumping into the arcade mode too. I liked the music even more than Ginga as it had more of that older 16bit tune mixed in with the compositions. Glad you're enjoying it too and I hope they can bring it to Switch as I've had a ton of comments asking for it, so the demand is there.
I like your sense of humor man, you're not like those youtubers who are all over your face with their "humor" that instead of being funny comes out as weird (like in real life when you can tell someone is actively trying to make you laugh and the only thing that accomplishes is feeling awkward) Your jokes come by very naturally and casually, feels like i am listening to a real person instead of a character.
Hey thanks man I appreciate it. I do go a bit silly with some of my skits when I use Timmy. Many like it and some few don’t, but I have fun with it. But for these more historical videos I just want to keep things entertaining with some humor while still doing the games justice and not turning them into a joke. So I’m glad you enjoyed it. I had a couple bits in the Eschatos section that still crack me up.
Great video as always man. I also wanted to tell you, Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles are getting a physical PS4 release at First Press Games. Preorders are open now. They even have special editions of each game.
Thanks. That’s one thing I wanted to mention in the video and totally missed remembering everything else 😅. Looks like a really nice set too. I didn’t see if they had a date for it being ready to ship.
@@ShmupJunkie im not seeing a ship date either. Guess I was so excited for more physical shooter releases to exist I didn't care 😆 I'm hoping for a physical release of Eschatos on PS4 so I can...ya know..... PLAY ESCHATOS! 🤣
Great video!! I discovered Eschatos a few months ago when I built my vertical arcade cab and it became one of the my favorite games on my arcade. After watching your video I immediately purchased the Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles double pack on Steam. I cant wait to play them. Keep the great videos coming! #QuetNatsuki4ME
Oh yeah? Dang I'm going to go claim my commission now from Rising Star on that purchase 😅 I'm sure if they looked great to you in the video you'll enjoy them both. That's going to be a lot of content and game time to get through. Ginga has so much to do you don't realize at first until you get into it more. I hope you enjoy them and I bet you will. I just added you to the giveaway even though sounds like you have it, but can't hurt to have it on PS4 as well. 👍
Watching this as I'm in the middle of my hard mode run on Ginga Force. Couldn't agree more with your assessment. Easy is difficult to begin with. Normal is a good challenge. Hard is absolute hell. Fun, but hell.
@@ShmupJunkie Same here, lol. I'll give myself the credit of being a beginner at the time, but I think I have somewhere around 10 extra lives built up on easy mode stage 5. Still painfully working on that one in hard.
Holy Hell...I read your thumbnail as "quit" em up's. I though...this I have to see. The shmup's and platformers we grew up on are some of the toughest games ever conceived. If there was a set of games that made you quit I was going to have to play them. Then I realized it was cutemups...like Fantasy Zone, Stinger, Cotton, Twin Bee, Parodius, Twinkle Star Sprites (I hate this game), Harmful Park (one of my favourites), and the bullet hell Do Don Pachi to name a few. Oh my God...this game looks absolutely amazing! Okay, I have to find that code! If not, I'm buying it no worries.
Hahaha that's actually a funny name. I should totally do something called QUIT EM UPS lmao. Actually it was a play on words, it's specifically about the games made by developer QUTE, and none of them are actually cute em ups haha. You'll see as you get into the video. Really really good games though and worth checking out.
@@ShmupJunkie Sorry for the length but I think this is important. I haven't finished the video yet but there is something absolutely astounding happening in the game industry today...I believe history is repeating itself. Now, I wasn't around for the first and second generations of gaming. I got my start in the third so what I'm seeing is something I have only witnessed through many hours of research. Here goes... During the second generation Atari was the defacto king of console gaming (sales wise). They were seen as an unstoppable juggernaut but halfway through the second generation they became lazy and let greed lead them to ruin, killing the North American game industry as we knew it. Stores refused to stock consoles or games and most people called gaming a "stupid fad." Thankfully, two Japanese companies (Nintendo and Sega) decided to throw their hat in the ring and single handedly revived the gaming industry here in the states. It's taken many years for our North American market to get back to where we were... Unfortunately, it appears Western game developers have once again become corrupted by their enormous greed and lust for power. Each year we get less and less for our dollars while they enjoy insane profit margins beyond reason...this is unsustainable and we're headed for a crash the likes we have never seen before. It won't just be here in the US but worldwide and I don't think it can be stopped (this is the bad part). There is a great deal of...not hope but actions happening everywhere that I believe will change everything. You see, for the past 15 years it appears the Japanese gaming industry has shrunk considerably. They look like a shadow of their former selves but I believe that is only on the surface. We are beginning to see a resurgence of top Japanese intellectual properties that are just as creative and amazing as they were in the 1990's. So if the crash happens (even if not) the Japanese are coming with their amazing games. Either way these Western companies will either evolve or die and I'm perfectly fine with that. I mean, what would you rather have- Battlefield 12 Modern Combat w/$200 of DLC loot crate surprise mechanics or something with an actual soul created not just for money but with actual love of gaming? I may adore all gaming across every genre (I do) but I'm not happy with most Western developers. A Japanese flood is imminent and I for one will welcome them with open arms.
Love your channel, have been watching and subbed for a while now and always appreciate the hard work and honesty you put in your work. Ginga and Natsuki can be pre-ordered physically from 1st Press as well in beautiful packaging with really sweet extras! Thanks for the video!
I’ve been eyeing those sets and am tempted despite already having them on Steam. Not sure if they’ll ship anytime soon but it’d be nice to have them physical for the future. And thanks for the feedback it’s always great to hear from everyone enjoying the work.
Yeah these specialty copies always take a while to produce, but it's good to support those small publishers and outfits. I have to review the game quickly so I don't have the luxury to wait, but when I enjoy it enough, I double dip and order the physical to own too. I do hope you enjoy them once they arrive. Can imagine the amount of gaming hours you'll get out of them... a lot. 😅
Great review thank you! I'm a huge fan of Musha and ThunderForce I've enjoyed GingaForce, can't wait to try Eschatos and Natsuki Chronicles! #QuteNatsuki4me
You know what I think... definitely try Eschatos it's awesome. There is a free demo on Steam you can download to check out too and the game is only 15 bucks. I just entered your for the Natsuki giveaway you're good to go.
yeah I would so so love to see it back on modern physical release. It's so good it needs inclusion in any QUTE collection. Maybe we will get one someday, or better yet a direct sequel with the original included! Ah ok I have to not say stuff like that and get too excited lol.
Thank you. And they indeed are. I think I am going to count up how many comments I just got saying I wish it was for Switch and send it to the dev. It's at least worth a shot 😅
I wasn't convinced from just the visuals of these games, as I tend to prefer sprites, but you completely changed my mind. I'm definitely going to play Eschatos! #QuteNatsuki4Me
I'm with you on that for sure I'm the same, but sometimes a game just transcends it all. It's damn fun no matter how you slice it and the music is sensational. You won't regret it and for the 15 bucks on Steam it's cheap. I just added you to the list for the giveaway too.
Eschatos is clearly a transliteration on a VERY specific word: Eschaton. "The end of the Divine Plan" aka "The end of the world". Great name for a SHMUP especially with the UFO motif!
Wow that's so cool to know! Never would have known that and it totally makes for a great name. I can see it in a completely different light now. Thank you for that. Reminds me of Independence Day as well and It's the End of the World as we know it. And if it's anything like this game, I'll feel fine. 😂
I teach Ancient Greek, so I can give you guys more information here, since you both seem interested. - "eschatos" is the Ancient Greek adjective that means 'furthest, last, final, extreme' - in English, philosophers and religious scholars use the term "eschatology" to describe the study of how different world-views envision the end-times/end of the world. - the neuter gender of "eschatos" is "eschaton" and was a term used by some early Christian teachers (who preached about the "end times") to describe the final phase of the world, according to how they viewed God's plan - I don't know how much M-KAI and his friends know about Ancient Greek -- LOL!! But if they made a purposeful choice to call the game Eschatos (masculine gender) instead of Eschaton (neuter gender), then it seems to me they are either A) describing the person flying the ship as the "final or last" defense against the enemies, or B) wanted a cool-sounding name for "extreme, final" and just picked the Ancient Greek one right out of a word list, or C) as SEGASteve suggests wanted to come up with a name that is reminiscent of "eschaton", the end of the world.
@@sonicmania9993 Dang I missed out on some good background on the naming I could’ve used some of this on the video. It often turns out they choose names with just a surface comprehension of their meaning. Aleste / Arrester is a great example. But if there’s ever an interview question I’d ask Mkai it would be how he chose Eschatos as the name. Usually cool sounding is the answer.
I must follow your advice and...will play Eschatos in some way or another! I think the same when people doesn't like ice cream and other things;-)) Great video, It remains for me to say: #QuteNatsuki4Me
Okay... I'll play Eschatos! :) It was already on my list anyway ^.^ Ginga Force is not for me, but I'm interested in Natsuki Chronicles' arcade mode. Love your videos mate. They come off very organic and entertaining
Thanks! And Eschatos is definitely your speed if you’re looking to just jump in and play. It couldn’t possibly be much more fun. I’m a big proponent too of having the option to just quick play a game like this, and I think they realized it too it was smart to have an arcade mode in Natsuki. Glad you enjoy them man I’m having a blast making them too.
I will keep my fingers crossed they don't take forever to ship as I know sometimes that is the case. In the meantime maybe you'll get lucky and win the prize. You're IN. 👍
If you are looking for some new ones, definitely Play Eschatos you can't go wrong. As if the video didn't drill that into one's head already lol. And you're IN for the prize 👍
I wanted to tell that you were right, I played Eschatos! First, I bought ditigital on the Japanese Eshop... than, I bought an Xbox 360 because of the many shmups and I played also on that console! Spread the magic mantra, Play Eschatos!
Oh man would I love to see it on Switch and even PS4. Just a modern console. Not everyone uses PC or plays on Steam, so I'd think at least on Switch it would sell well enough to be worth it.
#QuteNatsuki4Me The bundle with the two games exist on psn store also... the Ps4 is lacking shmups so those games are a great additions to it. Thanks for the great video, I just discovered a new developper :)
You're welcome! That's good to know you can buy the bundle on PS4 too. That's a ton of content for two games combined. Just added you to the list for an entry to win! 👍
Hi @ShmupJunkie ! Once more, thank your for your fun and detailed review of this Qute Trilogy including Eschatos ! I started searching Eschatos on Xbox 360 before realizing it was not listed on Xbox Series X compatibility chart. No problem, I’lol buy it on Steam. By the way, #QuteNatsuki4Me !
Yes! Steam is by far the best way. Only nine bucks and it’s wonderful. Only other way I know is for Xbox360 and it’s really expensive. By the way, we already did the give away for this one it’s all over. It was about a week ago. But there will be more for future games! Devs have been very kind to give out codes for me to give away.
Excellent video as always! I hope many more ppl play these gems. I thought I got scalped when I picked up Eschatos on 360, but i soon fell in love. With the Wonderswan games included, it's an amazing package and worth every penny 👌 #QuteNatsuki4Me
Thanks man! And I will admit that I loved it so much I went and found me a physical copy of the game haha. So I got it on the way and will wait to play those earlier games that way. I want to have that physical in case Steam goes by by one day. It's too good a game. And you're IN for the giveaway.
@@ShmupJunkie Good call! Sometimes (ok..a lot of times) a game just deserves a place on the shelf. When the digital apocalypse hits, we can still enjoy them lol 👍
After all 3 of these OSTs I don’t doubt it. Now I know I can look forward to more of the same in future releases. I was looking up some of his other work. Any other specific stand outs you recommend?
@@ShmupJunkie Yeah man, check out Mamoru-kun Curse. It has a bit more of a whimsical sound but you'll hear his style immediately. I haven't dug up the osts for the anime fighting games he did, but I'm sure they beat too. If it wasn't for Manabu Namiki, Yasai would be my favorite shmup composer XD
I want this game badly that #QuteNatsuki4Me is definitely for me. I am completely blown away by how clean it looks. It's like Thunder Force IV, UN Squadron, Radiant Silvergun, and Blazing Lazers were all thrown into a blender with a touch of Final Fantasy/Phantasy Star for good measure. If this game does not set the bar for all shmup's to follow...then I don't know what will. Thank you for sharing this with me. ;)
Just added you to the giveaway list and if lady luck doesn't smile on you, hopefully it looks good enough to pick up anyway. It definitely sounds like your type of game from what you just wrote so you'll enjoy it. Not everyone likes or wants a hybrid shmup but I enjoy it myself too. And it's got the Arcade mode for quick plays. So it ticks all the boxes. I'd be happy to see more games like this done right.
@@ShmupJunkie I would as well and thank for including me! Yes, this is something I can really get into. I never know about these games when they hit so I love it when I find out about them.
This was really good! I found it especially interesting that M-Kai chose such bizarre platforms to release on like the twilight years of the MSX, the Wonderswan, and the Xbox consoles. Seems to be working for him and Qute though! I’m so out of touch with a lot of newer shmups so videos like these are super fascinating to me. I’ll probably dig through some of your older retrospective videos too.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it too. I think MKai's choices were based more on availability at the time and budget than anything else, at least with the MSX, being what he had available to use. And the Wonderswan seemed like a good idea given it was using a unified C language, as he wanted his new games to be more easily ported elsewhere in the future. And turned out the wonderswan wasn't a great choice, but in the end it got him hooked up with QUTE and the rest is history. Do hope you enjoy some of my older stuff, I did a couple fun historical videos too like one for Compile, and am working on one now for RType. I prefer the older shooters myself as well, like Gradius of course, but some newer games that still feel right to play hit the spot, especially Eschatos.
@@ShmupJunkie That makes a lot more sense now! On paper, both the Wonderswan and the Neo Geo Pocket were so much nicer than the Game Boy, but Nintendo's stranglehold on the handheld market just wouldn't budge. I'm definitely very curious about some of the more niche shmup histories like Compile and Toaplan. I was really into shmups in the late 90's/early 2000's, but once Gradius and R-Type "died", I kind of fell off. I'm slowly getting back into the genre though so I look forward to using some of your videos to get some recommendations, haha. Keep up the awesome work!!
@HAUSER Thanks! I’m slowly wading my way back in, haha. I love the Gradius and R-Type series so R-Type Final 2 will be an insta-buy for me and good re-entry point hopefully! 😁
I like Eschatos a lot. I bought that one at launch from my favorite (now sadly gone) game store ever, The Game Trader in St Charles, MO (the original, not the sad imitator that followed). Brian, the owner, had me sold on it, having told me about its connection to Judgement Silversword on Wonderswan, the shooter that had been published following a development contest in Japan using the WonderWitch software. I love how much of a departure it is from the manic shooters that were all the rage at the time, as it has a totally different flavor than anything else on the 360. My one friend in real life that also digs shooters immediately fell in love with it as well after trying it. Just a great game no matter how you slice it. Now if only I coild figure out why I like that messy game, Strike Witches, so much...
We all have that one game store we loved going to and is long gone or not the same. It's that way for a place called Game Dude out where I live, which is somehow still around but of course just a shadow of it's former self during the days I'd frequent there regularly. Long before the Eschatos day, it was there for me to buy all my Turbografx games at the time, already trading and reselling and upgrading there. I totally missed Eschatos on 360 not knowing how good it was at the time so I am thrilled to finally discover how good it is... in no small thanks to friends egging me on to play it.
@@ShmupJunkie I don't think I'dve given it a shot had it not been for the Game Trader. I was mostly keyed in on the Cave stuff at the time, but being that that store was the only (but tremendous) store in hundreds of miles that carried just loads of imports and oddball stuff, it was the cornerstone of my game spending for about 15 years, and I trusted his judgement. He had a good read on me and what I liked to play. It's where I bought my Neo Geo AES, PC Engine Duo-R, PC-FX, Wonderswan, Japanese 360... and lord knows how many countless other games and consoles. Nowadays I'm pretty much stuck with online ordering to get stuff I don't have. Such is life!
@@NLSagat believe it or not BG is older. JS was made early 2001 for Wonderswan portable. A lot of the BG ships actually are from Raizing’s first games Sorcerer Striker, Batrider etc.
hahaha, you know it was going to originally be playeschatos...but since it's a give away for Natsuki I wanted to try and use something with the name. I'm saving spacedildos for a special occasion 😂 You're in for the prize 🤘
I always found crazy how long it took M-Kai to make games for a commercially relevant system. Starting on the MSX when the MSX was too old to the point of being archaic but too new to be considered retro-cool. And then going to the wonderswan that about 20 people on the planet owned one, heh.
Dude you absolutely HAVE to play Eschatos. Don't think you need a crazy PC to do it on Steam and it's only 15 bucks. You would like Natsuki too and you're on the list to win it now. Maybe you'll get lucky again. Nah that first time was all skill and dedication.
Thanks for the Essay... Wishlisted all their Games on Steam... The Natsuki "remember the R-Type" Level... Stage 4 brought Tear into me Eyes... because in this Level the Kiddie Gloves flew off... on easy...
Thanks! Yeah, even though I really like even my first videos, they are quaint... sometimes I'm like man what was I doing or thinking haha. It's definitely come a long way and hasn't even been a year yet. I keep trying to make improvements with each one without going overboard where I can't produce a video in a week. It's a ton of work as you say, but at least I'm enjoying it.
Hey, 13:27 is identical to the part the Bloodstained 2 when the game become a shoot em' up near the end game. People there probably have done a homenage.
22:09 sounds like the low rank, high rank and G / Master rank difficulty structure found in Monster Hunter / hunting games. Hunting games were quite the hot stuff at the time.
I never actually played a Monster Hunter game, mostly as I just didn't have the time to invest. But my boy played it a lot for a while. I imagine that didn't have much of a novice or easy mode either.
Bummer! Yeah the game is just so expensive. It's a shame it's not also released on PS4 or some other current gen consoles. It deserves to be on everything.

*Hears how you pronounce "Natsuki Chronicles"*
Good thing this isn't Twitter where the radical lefties would try to cancel you for that... right after they attack someone for assigning gender to a potato without it's consent.
Twitter be like: "This man is clearly trying to chronicle hate crimes as a dogwhistle for white supremacy!"
Also, lol at your comment for millenials at 28:59. I have a feeling you were just giving sincere commentary, but at the same time it can come off like a passive dunk on millenials lol.
what another games like this do you know? thank you for natsuki project
I'm just getting started to buy shmups which one should I get
@@gamergate2.0andbooks From this developer? That’s hard they’re all good. Natsuki Chronicles has a great easy mode so is good for learning and lets you slowly progress at your own pace. And had a ton of content. Eschatos is my personal favorite for arcade style shmups from them but isn’t quite as friendly to beginners. I just love the game.
Couldn’t agree more. Eschatos is incredible.
Looks horrible!!!
@@AleksanderNevskij47 Looks can be deceiving :-)
Strictly Limited Games is releasing a physical cart for Eschatos. They are also adding the two Wonderswan prequels as bonus games
I saw that! Super exciting that release is getting a physical and they are the ones handling it. Out of all the limited print companies out there I definitely prefer SLG.
I read it as Cute 'em ups
Like Parodius and Cotton haha
Great content still.
Lol, I was expecting to see Harmful Park!
Eschatos is my absolute favorite shmup, so I'm glad to see someone else sing it's praises.

Nice! Even farther than me. I've got several hours in and finished it on normal so far, but still plenty more to unlock.
@@ShmupJunkie It gets pretty grindy late game, though. Prepare to invest some serious time if you must have all the weapons.

Damn the backlog!
buys game, hits like, buys soundtrack, still headbanging and playing this hours later! thanks for the review.
Hell yeah, sometimes a soundtrack helps make the game and Eschatos is one of them.
I caught this video about a week ago and upon seeing footage of Eschatos was immediately intrigued and hopped on steam and grabbed it. I just got my first ever 1cc on Original Easy this afternoon, and am pretty stoked about it. Big thanks for showing the game off!
Awesome. I'm glad I could get yet one more person to play Eschatos. I discovered it late myself and it quickly became a top 10 for me.
Thanks man
I just found your channel and rekindled my love for shootemups. I just natsuki chronicles and I can't wait to try it out!

I still gotta 1cc Eschatos, it definitely deserves more effort than I've given it. Great stuff as always.

I have some very vocal QUTE supporters on my discord so it was bound to happen, and once I loved Eschatos as much as I did it was a forgone conclusion. I'm excited to see what they come up with next someday. Whether it follows the formula they set with these last two or something completely different.

@@ShmupJunkie That’s true. The gameplay is another thing.
Love Qute, such great games that just feel really good and the music keeps you going.
My Eschatos Original Normal score is probably still my proudest achievement in a shmup to date.
Just bought Eschatos thanks to this video
And I hope you enjoy it. I adore that game. Did you get it digital or physical from SLG?
@@ShmupJunkie The game is currently discounted on PS store so I got a digital copy there. Been playing it for hours!
Eschatos is confirmed for ps4 and NSwitch in physical format
The worst thing about Eschatos - it’s not yet on Switch. It’s a perfect candidate for the platform!
Yeah I would be so stoked to see it come out there, but it's not going to happen I think. Qute hasn't released a single one of their games on Switch yet, they stick to Xbox and PS4 it seems. But at least they also release on Steam which is nice. That's where I got mine.
It's now on Switch! JOY!!
Man, your positivity is contagious! Thanks for another great video. I love Eschatos and the WS stuff. Excited to try these other titles.
Thank you. It's hard for me to make a video I'm not excited or interested in, so it comes across when I am. Eschatos was so exceptional it's hard not to.
@@ShmupJunkie Do you have a Discord?
@@AlchemistTongueDrums Yes a good one. Great group and we do a caravan competition every so often too. Here’s a link discord.gg/YmcybMJz
I just added you to the list my dude and will keep my fingers crossed for you 👍
@@ShmupJunkie many thanks!
I have been binging ur channel today!!! Glad u did this video, i just got ginga force and natsuki chronicles for ps5 and they run great!!!!
Great videos. I love how you go in depth on the mechanics and especially pro and con deep dive.

That’s awesome and you won’t be disappointed. Very traditional compared to Ginga and Natsuki, but it’s a total banger! I hope you enjoy it.
Made it to level 25 in Eschatos so close to beating it i am blown away how amazing this game is

I have played Eschatos and LOVE it!
Now, excuse me, but I’m going to go play Eschatos.
Thanks a lot. Now I want to go play it again too haha. You're IN for the prize. Good luck!
Steam Deck?
natsuki chronicles is great for me because i'm not new to shmups i just never played enough to get good and the leveling and easy repetition of the stages is helping me get better.
@@ShmupJunkie Gotta be honest though, the boss explosions in this game are a complete copout lol!
@@AzrialAlaria I can’t remember them at all so I guess that answers why 😆
I like your sense of humor man, you're not like those youtubers who are all over your face with their "humor" that instead of being funny comes out as weird (like in real life when you can tell someone is actively trying to make you laugh and the only thing that accomplishes is feeling awkward)
Your jokes come by very naturally and casually, feels like i am listening to a real person instead of a character.

Oh yeah? Dang I'm going to go claim my commission now from Rising Star on that purchase 😅 I'm sure if they looked great to you in the video you'll enjoy them both.
Glad it wasn't just me thinking Ginga started to get pretty tough on easy to begin with! haha
@@ShmupJunkie
Sorry for the length but I think this is important.

I cant wait for my copies ginga force and natsuki chronicles but it may be a while since im getting them through first press games
Yeah these specialty copies always take a while to produce, but it's good to support those small publishers and outfits. I have to review the game quickly so I don't have the luxury to wait, but when I enjoy it enough, I double dip and order the physical to own too. I do hope you enjoy them once they arrive. Can imagine the amount of gaming hours you'll get out of them... a lot. 😅

Amazing!Ill be checking these out man, great video thanks
You're welcome and please do. They're some fantastic games. You know where I'd start : )
- "eschatos" is the Ancient Greek adjective that means 'furthest, last, final, extreme'
- in English, philosophers and religious scholars use the term "eschatology" to describe the study of how different world-views envision the end-times/end of the world.
- the neuter gender of "eschatos" is "eschaton" and was a term used by some early Christian teachers (who preached about the "end times") to describe the final phase of the world, according to how they viewed God's plan
- I don't know how much M-KAI and his friends know about Ancient Greek -- LOL!!
Another great video my man!

With the Wonderswan games included, it's an amazing package and worth every penny 👌
#QuteNatsuki4Me
As a VGM connoisseur, I can assure you that any ost composed by Yousuke Yasui will be banger-city
@@vgm4ever Namiki did some incredible recent work on GG Aleste 3 that really helped give the game its personality.
@@ShmupJunkie
I would as well and thank for including me!
Just curious.....in battle garegga there is also a silversword ship, can there be a nod from this game as i assume BG is the older title?
@@NLSagat believe it or not BG is older. JS was made early 2001 for Wonderswan portable. A lot of the BG ships actually are from Raizing’s first games Sorcerer Striker, Batrider etc.
I bought Eschatos on Switch when it released on that console. Good stuff.
#QuteNatsuki4Me, although I'm a bit surprised #PlayEschatos or #SpaceDildos wasn't the code in the end.
hahaha, you know it was going to originally be playeschatos...but since it's a give away for Natsuki I wanted to try and use something with the name. I'm saving spacedildos for a special occasion 😂 You're in for the prize 🤘
I love your channel of shootemups one of the best i love the way you review them
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoy them and I thought this video came out really well.
Nice video. It's like a triple threat review in one.
They all look worth trying out to say the least. And FINE, I'll play Escatos, you win :v
If you Play Eschatos then my mission is accomplished 😁
I always found crazy how long it took M-Kai to make games for a commercially relevant system.
Starting on the MSX when the MSX was too old to the point of being archaic but too new to be considered retro-cool.
And then going to the wonderswan that about 20 people on the planet owned one, heh.
Yet another awesome video man 👏🏼 Natsuki gave me that Thunder Force VI vibe 😍 I guess I have to play Eschatos now 😅 #QuteNatsuki4Me
Dude you absolutely HAVE to play Eschatos. Don't think you need a crazy PC to do it on Steam and it's only 15 bucks. You would like Natsuki too and you're on the list to win it now. Maybe you'll get lucky again. Nah that first time was all skill and dedication.
Yet another awesome vid! Keep up the amazing work Junkie!!!!
Thanks! Glad you dig it and I'll keep doing my best. Already started on the next one. 😓
That last game was giving me some serious Border Down vibes.
Big time. You can tell it was very influenced by it. I was thinking that while playing BD for the Dreamcast video.
Thanks for the Essay... Wishlisted all their Games on Steam... The Natsuki "remember the R-Type" Level... Stage 4 brought Tear into me Eyes... because in this Level the Kiddie Gloves flew off... on easy...
#QuteNatsuki4Me
Love seeing the evolution of you videos, man. You put a lot of work into your content and it shows.
As someone with no gaming PC and only an Xbox the price of Eschatos breaks my heart
Bummer! Yeah the game is just so expensive. It's a shame it's not also released on PS4 or some other current gen consoles. It deserves to be on everything.
