Catching REDFISH from a public road

  • It’s the piscatorial equivalent of Mardi Gras. Whenever Jack Frost decides to leave his polar lair and vacation in the deep south, redfish stack up in deep-water canals and bayous all over the Louisiana coast.
    One of those waterways runs between the coastal towns of Shell Beach and Hopedale, and roads line either side of the bayou, providing bank-bound anglers with the opportunity to catch their limits of redfish. It’s a festive atmosphere that’s reminiscent of Fat Tuesday, as happy anglers crowd the roads like revelers on the neutral ground during Rex.
    Referred to locally as the redfish jubilee, this year’s event just so happened to occur on Mardi Gras day, and since most area parades were canceled due to covid lockdowns, anglers showed up in droves.
    My son, Joel, his buddy Donny Steilberg and my buddy Dan McNeil were in that mix, holding our fishing rods with fingers that would hardly cooperate due to the 25-degree air. Every few casts, we had to dip our rod tips in the water to melt the ice that would form in the guides.
    The fishing wasn’t quite as good as I’ve seen at previous jubilees, but we still pulled some reds up onto the bank of the bayou. As a land-based angler, you can’t really hope for much more than that. It’s always a festive, surreal experience.
    Check out the video for all the details.

    Use to kill them years ago like that at Myrtle Grove when you use to be able to bank fish, the colder the better . It use to be packed tho but would always catch your limit. Was one of the hottest winter holes in Louisiana for bank fishing

    i think the big question is was there a big fish kill this year? texas is going to be hit very hard.....we had it pretty bad in 2018. was it cold enough for long enough to have a repeat in southeast louisiana? what are you hearing/seeing out there?

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  3 роки тому +1

      The info will filter in as waters warm and more anglers venture out, but really, my concern is with delayed mortality. I suspect some fish will die over the next week or two as a result of the freeze. Speckled trout fishing could be pretty lean around here until next spring. If we have a good spawn this year, those fish will be recruited into the fishery next spring and summer, and fishing could be epic, similar to what happened in 1991 following the devastating kill of December 1989.

    This video is a good example of why texas closed their coast because fish pile up and it’s like shooting them in a barrel for that one group that was in a good spot. Do better and practice some conservative.

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  3 роки тому

      Similar to when speckled trout move to the coast to spawn in the spring, and anglers catch their limits casting to beaches or adjacent to wellheads. The fish are super vulnerable then, so we should close down fishing during the speckled trout spawn. Would that also be your argument? If not, why not?
