SPRING BUYER'S GUIDE: STROLLING FOR BASS ( Hover Rig, Mid Strolling, Moping, Damiki Rig )

- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- Fishing finesse plastics on a jighead is taking over bass fishing! Here's what you need to know!! While this technique isn't new, advancements in forward facing sonar have caused a huge resurgence. However, you do not need electronics to fish these presentations effectively. They work equally well on offshore suspended bass as they do along the shore of a pond.
We're exploring the finesse technique known as "hover strolling", along with the power techniques known as "mid strolling" and "bottom strolling". Both are effective and after today, you'll understand how to apply them to your fishing, and which baits you should put the time into. Most of our Buyer's Guides are focused on baits and gear but today's also has an element of teaching in it, because so many anglers are struggling to understand this new (albeit old) fishing method.
Below you'll find links to all the gear the guys discussed in the video. We've separated it by category and included our favorite sizes, colors, and equipment where applicable. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

If shaking the bait as described @ 25:35 is part of the technique I would think that just extending your pointer finger down and letting the line bounce off of it would create the same bouncy action but maybe more subtle.
Great video. I think I partially jumped the gun by following Tim’s recommendations last year to Neko rig a fluke, namely the Yamamoto d shad using a 1/32 oz nail weight. It was my mid-strolling technique 16 months ago before mid strolling became popular. Thanks Tim, inadvertently you helped me to jump the gun to the future of mid strolling as Matt predicted😂. It does work when 1/4 and 1/8 oz strolling jigs with a scope shad stop working 😉
After watching this video I decided to give some of these tips/techniques a try.
I’ve been fishing a local pond that gets a lot of pressure. It’s a small pond and I’ve counted 20 different people fishing it throughout one evening. What I see most of them using is the basic spring baits ie. chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, wacky worms, ned rigs etc.. and I haven’t seen or talked to anyone who has been very successful.
My last trip out there I decided to try the mid-strolling technique with a 3.5” spunk shad. I was wrecking them! Between that and a Keitech on a flashy swimmer.
Using something different than everyone else was key. It produced 3 giant crappie and 4 good sized largemouth.
Thanks for the tips 🤙🏼
Also you’re correct. FFS is not needed!
Another great rod is the Diawa BLX 6’8” ML. It’s super light in the hand and has that great balance of protecting lighter leaders but still enough rod that a guy could run 10-12lb on it if needed.
If you do this with a baitcaster, wouldn't it basically be the same arm/wriat movements as the Alabama Shake for swim jigs?
Gonna start direct depositing my paycheck to Tackle Warehouse.
😂😂
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Lmao 😂
Flyssa with an Exist for the lighter range roller heads is unmatched combo.
Daiwa Is King 👑
You pair you flyssa with a 2500 or 3000 exist? I’ve got a p5 flyssa on the way right now and I have a 2500 exist already. Hoping they pair well
@@_Mr.Giraffe it’s a match made in heaven.
I love the core tackle heads. Well made and strong
Started strolling from a kayak last year. I use the Core rig, spunk shad and a beaver style
Br fish can be fished with the flat side down or up for a different action. The head can be fished with other plastics fairly well and has a specific rigging for the best jerkbait style retrieve.
Fx sculpin is one of the most underrated products available on the market. Sad it doesn't sell well. I need more for dropshot and strolling. Roboworm! please bring back the black and blue! I too have broken off some giants on this bait. Perfect size bait.
You guys are awesome!
I have loved the owner range rover head 1/96th with a raid little sweeper twitched near the surface looks just like a threadfin. Little V wake and small kick action. Bedding bass destroyed it on my last trip. Came off bed to eat it... 😊 🎉
Rod tap instead of shake works too. And line slap on the finger 👉 works too
Basically any dropshot bait is good for strolling too
The next thing in Japan is strolling big flat bluegill baits on big jig heads.
Recently watched a video of a Japanese guy who said strolling in Japan for bass originally came from the gambler STUD ( now the shake shad, a dropshot bait) so it's definitely been around a long time
My friend got me watching y'all. I appreciate all detailed information. I'll be watching tomorrow.
Your friend doesn’t want you to save money! Lmao
@@MaineStreamFishing we not worrying about money we catch fish and use any information that we can to use to our advantage.
I have found that you can mid stroll a 4” Chasebaits curly bait grub, still catching fish when the straight tails are not getting bit! 👍🏻
As a bank angler I want to thank you guys for sharing your knowledge. I've had success on the powerbait Gilly with core tackle's hover rig doing that death spiral. 7lber
Cool. What size was the core tackle hover jig?
@@casinoGameroo7 1/32 in 1/O with the 90mm Gilly
Wow going to try this thanks!!🎣
Good info, I have been experimenting with the gilly and I think I’ll try your suggestion since my local bass are mainly panfish eaters and they can get finicky when there’s a lot of people fishing or playing in the water.
The same people that complain about how boring this is, are the first ones to pick up a wacky rig when their power fishing isn’t catching anything.
Man, sometimes this is the only way I’ve caught fish. I’d love to pick your brains about clearlake some day. This lake is a freaking monster. 60 plus boats never caught a fish on Sunday in the chamber tournament
Wow … the demiki rig started it but Jeff Gustafson 🇨🇦 winning the 2023 Bassmaster Classic brought it to mainstream. Northlands Tackle is going crazy.
At 21:45 I had some SNL night at the Roxbury vibes.😂🤣 Awesome stuff guys
Love to see pros and experts weighing in and revamping old school techniques. Thanks for sharing SO MUCH value for free.
We're happy to do it!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE NOTE ABOUT NOT NEED A BOAT OR FFS TO USE THIS TECHNIQUE! SO MANY PEOPLE ARE DETERRED BY STROLLING BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY NEED FFS OR A BASS BOAT TO USE THIS. APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU GUYS DO!
Hey guys! Thanks for the video. You mention in the video that you like the steez utility player (7'1) but then in the description you put the steez 7'6 ("the one"). Just curious which you prefer...and do you prefer these over the nrx_ 901sjr? Thanks again!
Been hover strolling with downscan recently. Absolutely killer!
Awesome!!
You can do this with a shakey head and a stick worm. My uncle taught me this technique like 5 years ago, and his son taught him before that and he leared it in tournies. Constant twitching and reeling. Also great when open hook isnt viable.
It is not meant to be solid tips rods more suitable than tubular ones for that technique??
Walleye guys have been doing this forever. Funny how angling for the two species is beginning to crossover like walleye guys now are dropshotting for walleye I think both anglers are benefiting from each other’s techniques were on to something worth a deeper look.
Great video guys. Strolling is the deal. Thanks for the detailed info.
GREAT VIDEO !
Funny!! Ive had my eye on the BR-fish for a while waiting for confirmation on my thoughts "Got it" 😂
Sixth sense juggle minnow and the core tackle heads is a kill it also works great with d bombs they get a perfect spiral
Those CORE tackle hooks are amazing. Really well made.
I agree! I started catching more fishing after using the core hooks
I’ve been using the hover strolling technique for years and years from the bank for crappie, it’s quite potent for them 💯👌🏼
Tons of success on the 1/8 oz guppy and 3.5 SS. From big bass to big crappie. Best fishing I’ve ever had the last month and a half.
Awesome!!
Any tips on tying an 8 pound flouro leader to 8 pound braid with a blood knot? Use less wraps for the flouro?
9 and 9 still works with light line for me. May sound crazy but I burn the tag end of my fluoro after I clip it with a lighter. Makes the knot come through your guides like butter. Also creates a little nub and makes your knot impossible to fail.
It’s not THE rig, but it’s THE RIG when nothing work 😂
This really is a tournament only kinda bait. It works very well because it has great synergy with the 4 sonar beams that most tournament anglers shoot off of their boats.
This is why, even when I have the drift fry and other fancy baits, I’m not really hype about it as a bank fisherman. I still use it, but I’m not gonna stuff my cart and hoard a bunch of fluke style baits and jig heads lol.
We thought the same thing until we gave it a try. We absolutely use live sometimes, it's our job to be proficient. But if I were to guess at a number... 90% of all our strolling bites have not been on live.
@@tacticalbassin oh yeah, I use it sometimes. I just think the hype is generated from live scope catches where you can see how well the two synergize. However, you say you catch 90% without live so maybe you can get some hype going for the non scopers lol. It’s a good technique, but good enough to get a new ML spinning combo? Almost, I almost got one 😅😅😅. Sticking with what I got for now.
Tournament only bait? That makes zero sense. Absolutely whacked em last year with no live scope with this technique.
I've been doing this for years, I don't have livescope or a bass boat . I fish from the bank or a Coleman crawdad
You guys should zoom in on baits that you guys hold up
I’m 65yrs old. I’ve used the strolling method most of my life. No Idea it was a thing.
Yamamoto shad shape worm and the Strike king baby ztoo are killer baits as well. Alot of money has been won with the ztoo
Try your MB Ronin for the Duo Bayruf
Will this work in muddy / murky water?
Stained water, yes. We personally haven't had a chance to test it in really muddy water.
I've used that Diawa utility spin for a couple of years and it's great but it's alot stiffer than I expected for a medium fast
So is no one going to talk about the jackal drift fry or the deps frilled shad ? I feel like they’re right up there with the Sakamata shad… they’re all always sold out for a reason !
Noone can get them as is
"I am on a roll, I'm feeling good today" 😂 You guys always crack me up man
This made me smile haha
i got some of those br heads but none of the br fish plastics. i made a tackle warehouse order the other day and never thought about getting any of those plastics.
As always great information, very educational and timely. Constructive comment, I wish y'all would have had a close up or cut in with the hooks/bait that you were discussing. It was almost impossible to see due to distance. I know we can look it up in the listing but not the same as you give instruction.
Ps, beautiful background but I watch too learn. Thanks for the great job that you are doing!
Thank you for the feedback! We agree that close ups would be best, unfortunately because we've gone to 7 days a week for this, we just can't pull it off... it takes more time than most people realize. But we will keep that in mind going forward.
Core tackle is a leader with many options available!
Would this technique work for a smallmouth guy who wades, yaks, and bank fishes primarily? Wondering from ohio 🤔
It should. I’m in NEO and primarily kayak rivers. I don’t think it will work in fast current, at least not well. I’d rather bottom bounce for that, but in deeper pools or side casting to cover/eddies I’m sure it’ll coax them out. I’m also sure that with current and wood it would be pretty snag prone.
Deps Sakamata and Jackall DriftFry will complete the guide
We've been doing this for years when rigging soft plastics "Wrong" you get that spiraling. Good stuff guys
Go figure! What's old is new again 🙂
It's funny, alot of us just used to call peduluming a small straight tail style bait, "Crappie Fishing". Lol
You're not wrong! Crappie fishing... walleye fishing... but geez it's effective.
@@tacticalbassin No doubt! I've accidentally caught some tanks over the years while targeting crappie, strolling over brush and rock piles.
Can you stroll a double damiki rig?
You guys are simply awesome, thank you for taking the time to do these in-depth buyers guides.
I really appreciate the information 👍😁
This was how we fished for stripers from the bank but we just never knew what it was called 😂
My biggest smallmouth last fall came on the hover shot off bank below a dam in Kentucky was just over 5lbs
Thats awesome! Congrats!! 🙌
Did y’all hear about the new GLX 6’10 jerkbait rod ? Let’s get a review need to know if I should upgrade expride lol
I'm going to try this year.
Hard not to be throwing spinning for Smallies.
Bro the raid fish roller is ☠️🥵
Good luck finding Sakamata Shads anywhere. I’ve been mostly using the Crush City freeloader and the spunk shad for mid-strolling from the bank and it absolutely works. Just got a few packs of the Raid fish roller to try this weekend. There are so many straight tail minnows on the market now it’s getting kind of ridiculous!
It's 100% ridiculous but they're not all created equal. You're throwing the right baits 👍🏼
Thanks guys 👍
Could u still mid & bottom stroll with a daiwa steez 7.6 the one? I have some of the baits mentioned in this buyers guide
Yes, you can 👍🏼
Cool thanks! Don’t want to buy a new rod for this technique. Now I will focus on getting a new chatterbait rod & some tactical bassin underspins.
I’ve caught some of the biggest bass ever bank fishing with a hover stroll rig, some of the biggest crappie too 😂
Walleye fishing 🎣 for bass 😮
100% and it works!
Chuckin & windin baby!! Let's Go!!
Looks warm by you, nice
Walleye fisherman have been doing this for years bass guys are always late to the party then take credit for the idea like its revolutionary. Not you guys just the industry in general
Why do y’all not talk about the 6th sense juggle minnow and 6th sense in general
We haven't done very well with the Juggle Minnow so far and we definitely do include/review some 6th sense baits.
@@tacticalbassin ok
Juggle minnow smokes em look at Millikan that’s what he uses. A lot of these dudes hate on Millikan cause he’s the real deal and most people are jealous of him. Not saying that here but just in general.
*adds 31 items to cart* 🛒
😂🤣😂
😂😂😂
Gussy was winning tournaments doing this before it was cool. Im glad you guys gave him his props
No hover juggle!? No love for 6th sense lol
Someone has to make a bait in this category that has a mylar strip in it. That way, every time it rolls, it'll let out a flash
Already made couple of different ones. It’s your job to find them 😂
@@Daiwa_Is_King huh?
@@frankwestphal4525 you have to find them they are already made. Do you understand now ? 😂
@@Daiwa_Is_King Did your dad beat you?
At what point do you just use a bare hook without any lead on it. Those 1/96th weights are basically weightless. So just go there. Hahah
It's not weightless just lighter than normal. It's to use 3-6lb test like bfs. Just smashed them last Thursday on the 1/96th owner RR and a Raid Little sweeper. It was so natural but would still cast 50'
Didn’t we used to call it video game fishing?..
Only when done with a graph, this is highly effective fishing blind as well 👍🏼
@@tacticalbassin yeah with 2D sonar. Simpler times…
Gotta love seeing in the past nothing but baitcasters on deck maybe maybe 1 spinning rod to the deck full of spinning rods 😅
😂 What a change!
Ugh... the wife and daughter spatting before school. Time to retreat to Tactical Bassin! 😂
BTW, that "catch your breathe for a moment" 😮 I don't think that came out as intendedl. I hope there was a little conversation after the video.
Somebody has some nice property yall have in the background
Walleye guys been doing this before ffs. It’s crazy how we as bass fisherman don’t learn from other species fishing like marine, Muskie and panfish. We need to learn not to be stuck in our own world.
Moping? Sounds like my teenage daughter.
She must be Canadian 😂😂😂
Damn ...i wanted a Dad Joke 😅
I use a bait that no one talks about for this technique and I’m gonna keep it that way 😂 !!!! Man oh man is it deadly I’ve already caught 2 eights and a double digit this year on it. Countless 3-5lbs and many of species of fish that can’t resist that action.
I saw a post on Hookup Tackle and they said the 6’10” medium Shimano expride was made for mid strolling. Yall have any experience throwing that rod?
😴

So tight lineing renamed
Boring 😴 jig head minnow is the most boring topic in bass fishing although the most popular at the moment. This is a bad “phase” in fishing.
Basically walleye fishing 🎣 technique 👌
It's definitely not the most exciting but it is highly effective. However, we've adapted it for blindly covering shallow water and it's really fun in that application.
It’s pretty exciting when I am busting 25-30 lb bags all winter on a medium light spinning rod in deep water.
It’s just the last thing I’d want to do when from March-June. Lots more “action packed” ways to get bit that don’t need a fairy wand.
Bass don't care about your feelings
