  • Practice your close voicings with this famous jazz standard "Take The A Train"!
Close voicings are often called "rootless voicings", or - when played in the left hand - "left hand voicings".
For maj7 and min7 chords we use 9th chords (maj9 and min9) without the root. For dom7 chords we use guide tones + 9 and 13, again without the root.
You can also use these left hand voicings to comp, so a backing track can be helpful to practice along!

Best tutorial yet to prep for pro playing. Keep them coming. Someone to Watch Over Me. East of the Sun(West of the Moon). The Nearness of You. The Way You Look Tonight. Fly Me to the Moon. Giant Steps(just kidding). Any of the above would be great. Thx so much.

Why just kidding on giant steps? Because it’s so fast? lol I love that song but it would be a nightmare to learn.

Another great lesson. If I ever become a convincing jazz pianist it will be be because of this channel. I love the efficiency of the delivery. You don't wast a second of our time. By the way, more stuff on walking bass would be good if you're wondering what to do next

I am so grateful to you for this. I grew up playing classical and always have had trouble making up good voicings, I am such an overdoer and I always try to voice the flat five of the d, but your voicing are so easy-going and sound INCREDIBLE! I need to learn from that
