    Excellent review. Surprisingly good image quality .. proves it's not about how many megapixels there are -- or the lens for that matter (people will hate me for saying that, but think about it, the lens consists of dual panels of thick, hardened glass. People who think the lens is more important than it really is with digital cameras are those who once used film cameras, as the lens was all there used to be between the subject and the film.)

    The macro facilities are awesome and worth the price for that alone. I used it underwater while on holiday in Barbados as well and was very impressed, although this was the first time I had taken an underwater shot, I managed to capture some fish. I recommend the FD1 accessory for macro and underwater shots. The camera does an excellent job in bright situations eg on the beach and I loved the panorama facility with three separate photos stitched together beautifully in-camera. Maybe not so great in poor light but all in all this is a great compact camera that I can take with me every day. I love it.

    I have the old TG-4 and I love it. But the screen on mine now has a leak problem and some of the water would get in the screen. Still I love it.

    I recently went mountain climbing up Snowdon in the UK the weather was shit raining, windy, fog, and my Mirrorless camera was badly water damaged and is useless so thought something like this might be a bit more ideal, but it seems it's not such a great camera for raw image quality which is a shame really it would be perfect with the power of a low end Mirrorless.

      @@erikafernandez4477 I have a TG-5 and the PT-058 underwater housing. The LED ringlight and filters can be used on the camera body down to 15 meters (49 feet). For deeper diving from 50 feet to 147 feet you need the underwater housing. HTH.

    One issue not mentioned is there’s no protection for the front glass, the cameras promoted as tough & shown on beaches & in rivers. These environments have sand & as there’s no way of putting a protective filter then the glass can be scratched. Getting it repaired costs around £150. Saying you don’t have to worry about anything is misleading, on every camera I own there’s a filter to avoid this issue but non of the so called Olympus Tough cameras have a way of protecting the glass from accidents.

    Although I'm pleased with the camera, both in and out of water, what really annoys me is every time you post a photo to social media it brings up in capital letters 'OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA' under each photo, which means I have to delete that off every single photo I post which is a damned nuisance. Does anybody know how to get around this?

    The log at 5:50 shows depth at 30m. I imagine this must be with an underwater case, as the camera is rated only to 15m on its own. Does the logging actually detect ambient pressure when sealed inside the case?

    I am torn between this camera, the Tracker, and the new GoPro Hero 7 Black. I am in the market for an all around action camera. Something that I can use while out adventuring but also use to take decent photos and put on a tripod to take decent videos of my dog and I doing agility and nosework. I am torn between the Olympus Tough Tracker, The Olympus Tough TG5, and the new-ish GoPro Hero 7 Black. My last point and shoot camera was an Olympus Tough and I really liked it. I have never had a GoPro, but it seems to be the gold standard brand when it comes to action cameras. I like the price point of the Olympus Tracker, but I am worried that with being a couple year old camera it will be made obsolete quickly. My biggest draw to the GoPro is the built in stability and the smaller size. Plus it looks like it will attach to things like my bike or my helmet a little more cleanly.
    Anybody have any thoughts between these three cameras?

    • @stevengoodfellow
      @stevengoodfellow 5 років тому

      improperusername I’m in the same boat, none of them seem to be very good for photography and the GoPro is much better for video. I think I’m going to wait until the new models come out this year

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 7 років тому

      "Also, is there a way to remove the 29 minute record limit?"
      It's a function of the file system. 29 minutes is the maximum in 1080 Standard and 720 Standard and Fine; 4k is limited to 5 minutes; and at resolutions between those extremes, you get between 10 and 20 minutes.

    • @iwaswithyourmom9410

      At 800 ISO or above it's a bit too noisy for anything so I try not to go over 640 ISO. Also you lose a stop if you zoom in to 1.6x and another stop if you zoom in to 3x or so, so you can only use at 1.0x to around 1.4x in lower light. If you keep this in mind and know what you're doing you can avoid too much noise.

    • @Autotrope

      For 4K video it recommends a UHS-I Speed class 3 card, that means it has the big U with a 3 in it on the card. This is also sometimes called a V30 card. This is a little more expensive than the more common UHS-I Speed class 1 card which may not work reliably on this for 4K.
      Also 4K chews up space so you're gonna want 64GB or 128GB to fit about 1hr20min or 2hr40min respectively (very rough estimates!).
      The card recommended by digidirect above is ideal speed wise it's just a question of whether 32GB at a time is enough, that's maybe 40 mins of 4K video.

      If you buy from Amazon, I always go with the Samsung EVO Select. It can be hard to guarantee you won't get counterfeits these days, but the EVO Select is an Amazon Exclusive brand and as such Amazon is buying them direct from Samsung, so you know they're genuine. I have been buying pretty much nothing but 128GB MicroSD cards for a year or two now. They go on sale for low $30. Of course cards from a reputable camera dealer should be genuine as well.

    The video may be okay, but the photos are garbage. I was very disappointed in this camera. I have used DLSR's for a long time and wanted to buy a simple point and shoot for my wife to take on her upcoming holiday so I got the TG5 and did some test shots and, well, she might as well just use her iphone for snaps. Waste of money.

    • @JohnSoh
      @JohnSoh 6 років тому +2

      The strength of the camera is its durability. For the price, you could get a second camera with waterproof case as I don't recommend taking your main phone surfing or diving if you wanted to go that route. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison.

    • @vitamincisgoodforme
      @vitamincisgoodforme 6 років тому

      How are they garbage? Unless you intend to make large prints, the samples on Flickr look fine. Plus it shoots RAW. Im tossing up between this and the Ricoh GR ii.. that has DSLR like image quality however dust on the sensor is a major problem which in turn can equate to garbage photos. It also costs $280 more. Sensor dust seems to be an issue in a lot of compacts with high image quality. This camera doesn't have that problem. Can't win them all.

    • @jdonalds2001
      @jdonalds2001 6 років тому +1

      I agree. If you don't need the waterproof features you're better off just using your phone. Sadly there really are no waterproof cameras on the market with good image quality.

    • @WACONimages
      @WACONimages 6 років тому +2

      There are enough higher quality point and shoot compacts. Try maybe an older Nikon Coolpix-A aps-c compact or the Ricoh GR. This Olympus is for use during wet, dust, mud activities. I own the TG4. If set to raw storage and using Lightroom or other software the results come out quiet reasonable all together. It can take pics when all other gear can't

    It is a great camera, but with a great failure that has no forgiveness from Olympus.
    And it is the fragility of its plastic screen, which is scratched at the slightest opportunity.
    I advise to put a protector.
    That is the effort they had to have achieved in a camera of almost € 500.

      Samsung did the same thing with their flagship S8 phone (downgraded to 12mp) and Panasonic with the GH5s (20 to 10MP). Picture /video quality isn't just about megapixels.

    • @jdonalds2001
      @jdonalds2001 6 років тому

      Olympus did this to improve low light capture. But I don't buy waterproof cameras for low light. I use it in outdoor, water based, sports. I too prefer more megapixels for sharper images. Olympus went in the wrong direction for me. I'm actually more interested in the Nikon W300 or the older TG-4.
