Jan Hammer is interviewed by Steve Raible for the Seattle television program "Seven:30". Visit the Official Jan Hammer Website at www.janhammer.com - - - - -
He's amazing. I like the theme for Nova Television, Eurocops, with Jerry Goodman "Like Children" & "Stepping Stone", Behind the Minds Eye, and Vice of course. He is a rare artist that you can dig into every album and keep finding gold!
The interviewer was fantastic. Did his research, asked great questions and clearly approached it as someone with a ton of respect for the process & for Jan. Awesome stuff.
Agreed, I was expecting the most generic "SO HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE A HIT SONG?" kind of questions that local TV news usually asks. This was so, so much better than that.
Steve Raible was an amazing television host. He is actually an ex-Seahawk (NFL football player) who had a great career as a local newscaster here. I’ve traveled all over the US and I feel our local news media here tends to be a cut above most major markets.
Seriously? He got his first big break with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, not Miami Vice, and his musical background and experience go way, way beyond what’s presented here. They present him mainly as a pop composer when he’s really much, much more
I absolutely love Jan. One of my musical heroes! But Edgar Winter was the first high profile person to use a strap-on keyboard (ARP 2600). And Moog introduced the liberation before Jan had his custom keyboard built. Also, his first big break was playing with the mahavishnu orchestra.
If you’re not right about Winter, you’re certainly close; I think Gary Wright would have been next. But the line in the intro was incorrect in that it said specifically that he was the first to use the Probe when that actually would have been the Probe’s creator Roger Powell who would have laid claim to that while with Utopia. Furthermore, what the video shows is Hammer not playing a Probe but the Jan Hammer Signature Edition Lync controller, which as far as I know was far and away the best strap-on keyboard controller in regular production that anybody ever made.
Very strange interview, must be very old. No mention of Jeff Beck, where they did some magnificent work together, and Jan mirrored Jeff's iconic playing note for note.
It must be from 1992, because Jan is talking about Czechoslovakia splitting up, and that actually happened 1993. Czechoslovakia dissolved on January 1, 1993.
I found out about Jan when I heard Bambu Forest on WNEW FM in NY. I bought the album Oh Yeah which has it on it and is well worth a listen. And I'd like to buy a meal for that family friend who convinced Jan into developing his music! Now if he could talk to Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo and convince him to get away from mathematics and go back to his music, well that would be great.
Completely outdated interview, where the host talks less than the guest and doesn't even lecture us about matters of personal taste or comments on inflated social issues no one cares about.
This is the first Jan Hammer interview I've found on UA-cam, so I'm thankful for that. Would be nice to find one where the focus of discussion is on music rather than media and technology. That would require other musicians instead of a generic TV host.
I heard that when asked " Who was his favourite guitar player", Jeff Beck answered; Jan Hammer. He's without a doubt the most guitaristic of keyboard players/soloists.
Even though this video is dated from 2018, it was probably recorded in 1992 or perhaps even 1991 because Jan is talking about Czechoslovakia splitting up And that actually happened in 1993. Czechoslovakia dissolved on January 1, 1993.
Jan Hammer did not get His big break composing the theme for that cheesy eighties t.v show miami vice . over a decade earlier His was a member of a highly successful fusion jazz and classical band called the Mahavishnu Orchestra. that was world renowned .
He is the numb.one Jan Hammer great guy so kind i met him in Milan after a show with Al Di Meola i could not avoid to shake his hand and thanks him x inspiration he gave me since 1974

Great tune man, love that album "Like Children" with Jerry Goodman, his comrade from Mahavishnu.
Schon and Hammer collaborated and made two awesome albums. I wish they’d do another album today!
Now this is an interviewer who knows his stuff.

The music legend who composed the Miami Vice's theme tune and many others, Jan Hammer.
thank you USA you save our Czech musician from fucking soviet union :)

Greetings from a Pole for Czechs around the world.

I cant believe they didn't mention the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Jeff Beck. Jan is truly an amazing genius.
Yeah, You know how main stream media is. They are, as they say, IGNORANT.
He is a talent in his own right ? Perfect intro
@@rossfraser3415 He's among the very greatest! He dresses like such a humble non rock star guy.
Mahavishnu debut........ I will never forget that record

Yes, and Beyond the Minds Eye was released in 1993.
Jan hammer is wonderful at playing that keyboard .
Fantastic musician!
