The key reason only 1.6% of people in India pay taxes is since Agricultural income no matter how high it is - is not taxed. Rich Farmers pay 0 taxes. 70% of Indians depend on Agriculture. So effectively your starting point itsef is 30% of the population is under Income tax. Then we have small businesses who show zero profits and end up not paying any taxes. Salaried class who work for large corporations and government are the only ones who pay tax since they have no choice.
That's why three farm laws were introduced to cooperatise agriculture. Which would have been beneficial for both India and farmers
Unlike US, India has variable income tax rates (1 USD = 83.6 INR)
Annual Income Rates (new regime)
Up to Rs. 3,00,000 0
Rs. 300,001 to Rs. 6,00,000 5% (Tax Rebate of 25,000 if income < 7L)
Rs. 6,00,001 to Rs. 900,000 10%
Rs. 9,00,001 to Rs. 12,00,000 15%
Rs. 12,00,001 to Rs. 1500,000 20%
Above Rs. 15,00,000 30%

@@ReldrikGeo That's actually called progressive taxation in Economics. Since if you have more, you can still buy the basics and far beyond that even if a big chunk of your income is taken away.
That extra rate is charged only above the last slab's limit
e.g., if you earn Rs 8,00,000 then you'll pay nothing on the first Rs 3,00,000, 5% on the next 3,00,000 and 10% on the next 2,00,000.

🤣everyone knows this but . I have a friend who owns 65acre of coffe estate and also grows black pepper in that estate..So recently when ack pepper went all time peak he earn income around 3.5crore (he did not sell pepper for past 3years) and he has no tax coz it is agricultural product..I earn 11lakhs per annum and i pay tax around 1.5 lakhs🤣🤣so, one reason to of run away from India.. And he also comes under low income category.which means he gets ration and reservations..🤣🤣
Indian people in India doesn't want pay tax. But they move to other countries and has zero problem paying taxes. In the USA indian diaspora is the highest tax paying community.

Well, to be fair, 90% of India's population does not qualify for an income tax slab. Majority of revenue comes in through the indirect taxes.
GST in important necessities is around 3% and only luxury items are slotted at 18% GST. @@ReldrikGeo
2 percent of population only pays INCOME TAX… but the government earns more from indirect tase sich as state GST and Central GSt, custom duties, etc. icome taxes although a significant part of the tax revenue make up around 30 percent of the same. The other 98 percent or at least 30 percent of the population DOES pay taxes indirectly on products and services
People above 3750 $/annum are in the top 10 % and therefore less than 5 % people pay direct taxes.
The main reason for low income tax percent is most of the people in India are really poor even to afford their day to day livelihood. There is a huge gap in the wealth
For instance if you earn 300$ a month you are in the top 10% of the richest people.
Part of the reason is many people are in informal sector and we don't have any data of their earning, they could be earning more than what stats says but they don't show their income and avoid paying income tax, it is just not taxes it is about our mentality that we don't want to pay, we think paying indirect taxes that was all our duty.
Just react some real indian youtuber like abhi and niyu , sham sharma show, gaurav thakur this type of youtuber are balanced youtuber not like other anti india youtuber whose get views from Pakistan or Bangladesh.

If you are a middle class then you are top 16%
Income inequality is measured by the GINI coefficient. And India is at the same level as Japan in this metric. USA is a lot more unequal by the same metric. Yet our media narrative has us believing that we are South Africa in this metric.
I also remember reading how India had the distinction of being the only nation in world history to reduce income inequality alongside growing the economy, because until now, no other nation managed to reduce income inequality while also growing their economy. Although I didn't dive deep in that article.
Apart from income tax government earns via property tax, road tax, GST ( 50% to state & Central) ,Liquor tax, Tax on petrol
Tax on petrol itself is around 60%
In Karnataka the tax on liquor is 85%
I make $8982 annually as an IT Support engineer in India and I don't fall in tax bracket.
60-70% of Indian economy is unorganised meaning no sales tax and labour laws are followed in shops and business. All because of our incapable and corrupt bureaucracy.
