The dealer quoted me $2424 to replace the alternator. I purchased a new one and installed it with the help of your great directions. Of course that didn’t fix the charging problem. The battery is grounded to the body of the car, not the engine. There is a ground strap that connects the engine to the body on the left side. The connection at the engine oxidizes making it resistive. I cleaned both sides of the ground strap connections. After ohm’ing out everything to make sure it has a good connection, everything started working properly. Literally, a 35 cent star washer fixed the problem. Hopefully, this will help someone.

The body of the car should be grounded to the engine. On the left side of the engine is braided strap. With an ohm meter test that the body and the engine are near 0 ohms. You will have to scratch off the oxidation on the aluminum block to get a good reading. The engine may also turn over slowly, since the starter current also goes through that ground strap. Good luck.

What do you do if you can’t get the front end to move? Everything is unbolted and it seems like it should move but it doesn’t. I’m working on a 2014 Mini Paceman though.
Question Regarding the service mode bolts . Would you need the service mode bolts for the front end modular service mode to remove it? Or can you get enough clearance to get the alternator out with the frame hanging on ? (I don’t have the bolts and need to change the alternator ) thank you :-)
The bolts are to hang the front end so you don't damage anything or have to drain coolant. It's too heavy to hang on its own. You can support from underneath somehow maybe.
Mod MINI thanks for the reply! I got some bolts today from advance auto parts . I got some M8-1.25x100. Hopefully it’s not a special thread pitch and it fits .
@@ModMINI did it yesterday, I kñow I don't need to remove alternator, I was just concerned about limited room for any kind of a tool to release the tensioner. Hello Mod MINI I have a question : is it normail that the check engine light still a little (5sec) after I start the engine ? MINI COOPER S R53 120kw (2003)
I have 2003 mini cooperS. The battery light came on, power steering stopped working. I checked the alternator there is 14 volts. I checked 100amp fuse under the fuse box, there is continuity. I checked wires surrounding power steering pump, everything seemed to be normal. I exchanged a used power steering pump (not sure if good or not). Now I’m wondering if there are any other diagnostic tests that I should do? I checked the fuses inside the car as well. Please reply as soon as possible. Thanks, Max
this video is for alternator for gen 2 MINI. If not an alternator, suspect battery problem. If you are talking about a gen 1 mini with power steering pump, check for voltage at pump, if present, you have a bad pump.
If the pump has an issue will it give me a battery light? Because I have 14 volt at the alternator. I checked the two big red wires, I have battery power. I checked two small wires on the pump, one has battery voltage, and the other when I start the car has 14volts, and I think the 3rd one is a signal. Please let me know if this pump can give me a battery light on?

Not 12.8, but 8 millimeter socket, 12 points.
You can definitely get it out the bottom without removing the front end. If turbo, then yes removing the upper radiator support will help cus you’ll need to remove the charge pipe. If n/a you can prob remove it without removing rad support. I wish I could send a pic but wayyyyyy easier from the bottom.
Great video. thank you so much.
Awesome vid! About to tackle this job on my fiancee's daughter's car.
Is your DB alternator still holding up? Seriously considering it as an option since the locally sourced units are quite a bit more expensive.
Haven't heard any complaints from the owner.

Awesome video. One quick question:the tool to release the belt tensioner is it a 32mm special wrench? If not, what wrench to be used on the same bolt size you have on yours? Thanks
It is a special tool. I don't know the wrench size.
@@ModMINI thanks. i ended up buying the tool. but it seems to small on the photos for the same "bolt size" you have on that mini from the video.we will wait. thanks for the feedback.
@@Frederico710 I just changed tensioner and belt today. Tensioner was 30mm and I did not need that special tool. Only used normal wrench. Not much space to do it sadly. And I have same N14 motor as in video.
Great video was just wondering my alternator has gone on my mini clubman s 08 are the alternator the same as mine on the mini cooper s that's n14 engine thanks
You should verify parts interchange for your own car. Check realoem.com and shop for that part number.
Help! I can't budge the E10 reverse torx bolt blocked by the AC line with an 8mm wrench. Just can't get enough pressure on it. Gave up to avoid stripping it. Any suggestions? Hopefully others have ran into this. If I have to move the AC line how do I do that? Thanks!!
I used the wrench that he used but i had to cut about 1-2 inches off the wrench with a dremel tool to make room for leverage.
Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks for information
Thank you
perfect. thank you.
What do you do if you can’t get the front end to move? Everything is unbolted and it seems like it should move but it doesn’t. I’m working on a 2014 Mini Paceman though.
Boom! Subscribed. Awesome video.
good vid.
Find an M8 nut on the car somewhere and try to thread it. It's possible that it's a 1.5 if I measured incorrectly but I think it's 1.25.
Mod MINI thank you :-)
Very helpful ! I used this video for a lot of reference. I my alternator back in today . The MFE bolts I got worked just fine .
Lifesaver
#Mod Mini, do you need to follow The same process to replace just the belt ?
No. You would follow a process similar to this, but do not remove alternator. That would be extra work.
@@ModMINI did it yesterday, I kñow I don't need to remove alternator, I was just concerned about limited room for any kind of a tool to release the tensioner. I've ended up using block of wood & pushing from the bottom up on the pulley while my mate pressed the locking pin in from the top. Easy peasy and no stupid money tool required !
Hello Mod MINI
I have a question : is it normail that the check engine light still a little (5sec) after I start the engine ? MINI COOPER S
R53 120kw (2003)
Normal. That's how you know the light isn't broken
@@ModMINI thnx bro you r the best
Just earned a sub from me great video
Help me fix my Mini next. It needs everything 😂
Mod MINI Please note, this is a generation 1 Mini.
*Awesome!*
You can disconnect the compressor and just move it out of the way and the alt. will have enough to swing out of there
just found out my 2010 r56 is in need of an alternator. lights get dim during idle and get a little brighter when the engine is revved up.
Everything is pointing to my Alternator. 😢
