This song wasn't really about Christmas. Those behind it used Christmas to draw attention to the fact that millions of people were literally starving to death (and had been for some time) in Ethiopia due to famine and civil war - and still were months later in the summer when a follow-up concert was performed in London called Live Aid. America got on board later and released a single (We are the World) and a concert alongside the UK. This song has become a feel-good Christmas song over time. It was nothing of the sort when it was released and was a shock tactic never done before and backed by a bunch of high profile artists to get the population at large to dig deep and try and fix what governments and leaders were failing to do.
Every year around end of November, I start coming back to this MASTERPIECE!! The composition and arrangements by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure were sooooo SPOT ON!! And WHAT a lineup they were able to assemble in a matter of hours... Paul Young, Boy George from Culture Club (the singer with the purple coat), George Michael, Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet, Simon LeBon from Duran Duran, Sting, Bono from U2, the whole Bananarama trio... and of course the legendary Phil Collins working his magic on the drums! EPIC song with legendary artists! Thanks for your reaction.
The song was written by Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) and Midge Ure (Ultraxox and Visage) the lead singers are mentioned below, Live Aid came in 1985 which was one of the most amazing events in history
The verses were sung by Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Le Bon, and Bono (respectively), while the “Feed the world” chorus featured Geldof, Ure, David Bowie, Phil Collins, Paul McCartney, Status Quo, Bananarama, Paul Weller and many others.
Not trying to be a dick here but David Bowie and Paul McCartney were unable to be involved during this song's recording, but they did contribute to the cause later on.
I'm from the UK and I was very young when this record came out but I remember the genuine shock, horror, and outrage that people felt about this humanitarian disaster that was the famine in Ethiopia. Pretty much everyone in the UK bought a copy of this record even if they hated this song just because everyone in the UK wanted to do their bit to help.

To my knowledge, this song was recorded in one day and was relased within a week. All proceeds went toward the famine in Ethiopia. The song would hit number one on the charts in 13 other countries. Bob Geldof, the man who co wrote this song layed a platform that inspired both Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie to write 'We Are the World". Below is the listing you had requested. Merry Christmas beautiful! 🎄 Robert "Kool" Bell (Kool & the Gang) Bono (U2) Pete Briquette (The Boomtown Rats) Adam Clayton (U2) Phil Collins (Genesis and solo artist) Chris Cross (Ultravox) Simon Crowe (The Boomtown Rats) Sara Dallin (Bananarama) Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama) Johnny Fingers (The Boomtown Rats) Bob Geldof (The Boomtown Rats) Boy George (Culture Club) Glenn Gregory (Heaven 17) Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) John Keeble (Spandau Ballet) Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) Martin Kemp (Spandau Ballet) Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran) Marilyn George Michael (Wham!) The best thing is the way you react, the drummer is Phil Collins from Genesis and Phil Collins🤷♀, there is also Sting (The Police) and the guy in the middle: Bono (U2), merry Christmas Blessing
"The guy in the middle is the guy from U2?" 😂 Well, to the right he has Sting and to the left Simon LeBon from Duran Duran pretty much the most famous group in the 80s 😂 ("The guy at the drums" is Phil Collins, just a Legend). Then George Michael and some other guy 😂
Boy George was the orange haired singer. He was also in a band called Culture Club. Some of there big songs were "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me", "Victims", "Time", "Church Of The poison Mind", "Karma Chameleon".
In an interview afterwards Bob Geldof said, " with shipping or air cargo then trucking and on top of all that. Trying to get easy passage through countries that were in civil conflict. Most all the monies given was swallowed up. A very sad situation. It's a shame when the world gets in the way of good.
40 years 🎂 Beginning part is a sample of The Hurting, written by Roland Orzabal. He is 1 of 2 members of Tears for Fears. As for the rest of the song, written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. Mixed by Humberto Gatica. He also mixed We Are the World and Tears Are Not Enough. Not in Wikipedia. Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet played acoustic guitar. Wikipedia must update its page! The next year, David Foster organized a supergroup in Canada 🍁. Meanwhile, Bruce Allen handled the business side. Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Geddy Lee of Rush, the late Gordon Lightfoot, RIP, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Mike Reno of Loverboy and Neil Young are some of the singers. The red haired guy you pointed out is Boy George who had huge success as lead singer of the band Culture Club in the '80s.
Thanks Frank ☺️
This is wonderful. I remember when this was done. Everyone is so young. When did we all get older?

This song will live forever in the minds and hearts of humanity. A Beautiful song with an energy of compassion, love and emotion.
Great reaction.
I like what you said about empathy because many people in this world have no compassion or empathy.
Thanks!

Harry Belafonte was shocked that a load of Brits could do this song about starving Africans, he enlisted Quincy Jones and the rest is history.
