As a Taiwanese and a old school ROC army equipment collector
It’s happy to see my country’s camouflage in a foreign youtube video
This camouflage cover have also given a name called garrison camouflage due to it’s design for outer island environments and use by the army outer island unit until mid 90s
But there’s also couple photo of military police using this three color camouflage cover until early 2000s
and also this camouflage cover was never officially issued by army because it’s made by civil company

For people that wanna collect this helmet cover in Taiwan, it is hard to find this helmet cover in brick-and mortar military surplus stores or flea markets now, because lots of military surplus about ROCA's "grass green uniform"(草綠服) on the market were bought by crazy collectors in 2000s(Their method of purchasing basically was buying every military surplus things they can see in stores at that time.), so most of "Position" helmet cover are sold by collectors at online C2C websites now, such as 露天(Ruten) or 蝦皮(Shopee), the common price is around NT$100 to NT$250 depending on helmet cover's condition or production year. BTW, if you are lucky, you may still can find it in some old military surplus shops or big flea markets and its price will be much cheaper.

The main reason to use this helmet cover is for identification purposes. During Cold War, many Asian countries that opposes Soviet Union adopted US M1 Steel Helmet and OG107 combat uniform. You can just compare a 1980s fully equipped Malaysian soldier with the 1980s fully equipped Republic of China soldier, you will notice there's little differences between the two. It's just the same American olive green combat uniform and the M1 Steel Helmet. So, the helmet cover is the best item to create seperate country identify at that time.
But now, things are easier because now every countries uses different camo pattern and colours.

The green and tan on the helmet seems okay. The blue though? Yikes. I could spot that blue section from 500 yards. Turn it into a dull brown and it's basically a multicam colored "dazzle" helmet.

Thank you sir, this was actually interesting. I think that the made from scrap cloth and then standardizing that is the most likely origin. It is not too bad as the pattern does kinda break up the "helmet" shape.

Just look at it this way, if you were invading an island, you are more likely looking up from a beach. What colors do you see? Green for foliage, khaki/white for rock and maybe clouds, and blue for the sky...if you are a defender you are likely dug in and looking downward, most likely thing to be seen would be your helmet.

As a retired U.S. Army Sniper, and an aficionado of camouflage in general, I'd say that most camouflage tends to blend together to the eye at distance. The best camo for hiding at 20 feet from detection might just look like one color and shaped like a human at 2,000 feet. The larger and more distinct the color differences, the better it MAY work at distance, even though it's pure crap up close. My 2 cents.

Kinmen is the Wade-Giles transliteration of the name 金門 of the offshore island adjacent to Xiamen City. In the Wade -Giles system 'K' has the same phonetic value as 'J' has in typical English speech. Thus Kin men is pronounced like Jin-mun . The widely used Pinyin transliteration renders the characters 金門 as Jin Men. The actual lexical translation of 金 is "gold" or "metal" and 門 translates as "gate". you will be more correct in future to investigate the several variances of transliteration of Chinese place names from the phonetic values of an unrelated language, Hint: Xiamen above has a slightly tricky rendering for a native English speaker. Look it up.

Wanna talk about bizarre helmet covers?
During the 80s, the mexican army introduce new helmet cover for its m1 helmets (also for their m80s and PASGT helmers, but those would came later).
They used a woodland type camo that used a lot of brown, tan and some green. They uses multiple camouflage pattern types through the 80s and 90s (some remind me of the yugoslavian oakleaf and the british DPM).

    • @FoxtrotFleet

What's bizarre about a woodland helmet cover? Is it because a desert pattern would be more sensible given the terrain?

    • @Cabula1977
      @Cabula1977 5 місяців тому

@@FoxtrotFleet I said woodland type for its colors, dark brown (or some times a redish brown was uses instead)olive Green, and kahki if i remember correctly.
Whats weird are the multiple patterns that shared its colors.
Basically, there wasnt a single pattern(3-4), nor a standardized one. The construcción of the covers also vary, some using only 2 pieces AND others 3.
