  • In this video, we dive deep into The Shrouds, David Cronenberg’s latest film that blurs the line between grief and art. After an 8-year hiatus, Cronenberg returned to cinema with Crimes of the Future, and now he’s back again with one of his most personal projects yet. The Shrouds explores the unsettling concept of turning grief into a form of performance art through revolutionary technology, pushing viewers to confront their own fears of death and loss.
Join me as we explore the film’s themes, its controversial take on mourning, and how Cronenberg uses his signature blend of body horror and psychological tension to challenge our understanding of grief. Starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, and Guy Pearce, this film is sure to divide audiences and leave us questioning our relationship with technology and mortality.

Cronenberg has already made some of the most profound and moving films about disease, death and grief, so I'm grateful he's looking at these subjects once again as only he can. I was thinking about how grief looms over so many horror films -- one "monster" we all have to face in one way or another if we live long enough. I was glad to see you using what appears to be a clip from "Midsommar" here. Others I'd include in a "grief/horror film festival" might be "The Babadook," "The Descent," "Paperhouse," "The Orphanage," "Dead Calm," "Melancholia" (grief for the death of all life) and, of course, "Don't Look Now," the inspiration for the title characters in "The Brood," a very personal Cronenberg film about divorce and the traumatic effects on the next generation of children...
