- Today we are looking at Barnes Castle located 3 miles North East of Haddington, close to Athelstaneford on the slopes of the Garleton Hills. The castle is known locally as The Vaults. It was built to demonstrate the wealth of its builder Sir John Seton.

What a fascinating static insight into construction techniques and technologies of the day. Its like the Staffordshire hoard of saxon gold, all broken military related pieces. Youd never destroy these things to figure out their guts but we dont have to. Thanks for sharing!

For reference, the Castle of Barnes if completed, would have been built in the 1600's Spanish style of a "Cortijo", which Sir John Seton was enamored with following his time as Master of the Household in the service Philip II of Spain. Our family line, the Seeton's of Nova Scotia, are descended from Sir John Seton of Barnes, Lord Barnes, and from the second son of Sir John Seton 4th of Barnes, also John Seaton younger of Barnes, and after the loss of the Irish Estate in county Longford, settled in county Tyrone before immigrating to Nova Scotia in 1822. The Seton's of Barnes are one of the least documented of the family lines, where most writers not having been able to correlate records simply wrote that "the line went extinct", and which is incorrect. Sir John Seton of Barnes had two sons from his marriage to Anna Forbes (Sir John his Heir, and George who was the noted Doctor Sir George Seaton of Hailes scholar at Cambridge, Oxford and St. Andrews), and he also had an illegitimate son Hannibal Seaton who was the 'Hanable Seatoun', Burgess of Haddington who had a numerous family, and who was gifted a sum from his father's Will from his Estate by his uncle Robert, 1st Earl of Winton, and was connected with his half-brother in the Irish Estate of Moneylagan.
After Sir John Seton Lord Barnes, there were 4 generations of Seton's of Barnes (5 in total), where the family kept their seat and principal residence of St Laurence House in Haddington. The second Sir John Seton of Barnes had significant troubles with his eldest son Alexander Seton, while he was away attending to his Irish and caught up in the Irish Rebellions, as well as when he later returned home. Sir John 2nd of Barnes was succeeded by his second son, Sir George Seton 3rd of Barnes who was a Justice of the Peace in Haddingtonshire and who had significant legal challenges from his half-sisters over the Estate of Barnes and those in Ireland, and he passed the Estate of Barnes to his eldest son, Sir John Seton 4th of Barnes early as a minor as a measure to protect it from loss from the family due to those legal troubles.
Sir John Seton 4th of Barnes had two son's from his first marriage, James Seton (the noted Vice-Admiral and Governor of the Island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean) and John Seton, younger of Barnes (noted as married by the Dean Mr. William Annand of Edinburgh as noted in the Edinburgh Marriage Register). Sir John Seton 4th of Barnes also had a 3rd son Henry Seaton from his short second marriage to Lady Margaret Hay (who pursued an inheritance for her son from George Seaton of Barnes, after the death of Sir John), and where Henry Seaton was noted in America and settled first in Gloucester County on the Pyanketank in Virginia, and who was the ancestor of the Hon. William Winston Seaton (who was erroneously noted in America as descended from the Seton's of Garleton). The last Seton of Barnes was George Seton, 5th of Barnes and the de-jure Earl of Dunfermline who 'proclaimed The Pretender' in the 1715 Jacobite rising, which involvement although granted a pardon under the Union Seal, on 20th February 1716, lead to his liquidating the Estate of Barnes. After he was "set at liberty", the aged George Seton 5th of Barnes settled peaceably at his house of St. Laurence House in Haddington, and passed away shortly after 1732.
Andrew Seton of New York, was also descended from the Seton's of Barnes family. He was initially a Merchant in London and involved in the partnership, 'Hasenclever, Seton, and Crofts' in London, and noted for his involvement in Jamaica trading dating as early as 1759, and was a partner in The American Iron Company. James Seton engaged with his cousin Captain Arthur Forrest to command the ship "HMS Elizabeth" as a ship bearing a "Letter of Marque" against France, along with the latter ship "Cacelia." He settled in New York until the American Revolution, after which he was forced to relocate and settled in Fernandina in then Spanish controlled Florida, petitioning and receiving a large grant of land and estate from King Charles IV of Spain. His son and heir Charles Seton, Esq. was the first Mayor of Fernandina, Florida, and known also as "Don Carlos Seton, or Carlos Seton" in Spanish-Florida.

Would seem that Barnes's castle was intended more for a show of wealth and opulence rather than to be a proper defended structure.
