"Carrie Anne" by The Hollies is a shy tribute to Marianne Faithfull. The song was first titled “Hey Mr. Man.” They were rehearsing for a tour at Albert Hall. Marianne Faithfull was on the bill, who they had known since she was 16, an insanely stunning woman. She was brilliant at image, a pretty good voice. The sight of her raised there blood pressure, and gradually ‘Hey Mr. Man’ morphed into ‘Hey, Marianne . . . what’s your game now, can anybody play?’ But we chickened out. They made up a name that they never heard before: Carrie Anne.
This is one of the singers that was part of my growing up life, very sad to hear of her passing, so glad you were deciding to react to her today and rest in peace🙏🙏💙
Marianne was one of the key muses of the ‘60’s. She was famously discovered at 17 by Andrew Loog Oldham at a party attended by Mick and Kieth of the early Stones. Loog Oldham took one look at her and declared You’re a Star. He then told Mick and Kieth to write a song for her, now, they went into another room and wrote this track, the first song written by Jagger and Richards. They had never written a hit before, and she had never sung before. Lightning in a bottle. ✌️
This is the original version from 1964. She recorded it again in 1987 and in 2018. Both of the later recordings are slower in tempo, her voice raspier and deeper with the lyrics taking on a much deeper meaning. R.I.P.
RIP Marianne, I’ve always loved her music since I first heard her in the Sixties. It was eerie Jay how you chose to play that song today, when she passed only yesterday. The title was so appropriate. ❤
Can you imagine her as a mother, singing you lullabyes to bed every night as a child? She has the PERFECT voice for that - as you said, warm & comforting. A voice like that would also be great in a kindergarten teacher.
So strange, last night I read a tribute to her due to her passing by Mick Jagger, and then this is the first video I see this morning! And Jay doesnt even know! Fly high Marrianne.
She has recently passed at the age of 78. So many memories from the 60's with this lady. I remember seeing her in the film 'Girl on a motorcycle' at a midnight movie in 1969. Lovely simple voice with this lady, she had a very sad life after her initial fame, which led her at one point to sleep rough on the streets of Soho apparently, in London. 🙂💜💐🇬🇧
This song was released about a year or so after President Kennedy was assassinated. A lot of people imagined it was Jacqueline Kennedy's feelings and outlook after that tragic event. I believe this song was written by Mick Jagger and there was also a recording by the Stones. RIP Marianne. ❤️
RIP Marriane Faithful who passed away on the 30th of January this year at the age of 78😢. The song was written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger for her. ❤
The beautiful Marianne died yesterday. RIP. This was her first single, released when she was 17, before her voice was ravaged by drink, drugs, and hard living
“My first move was to get a Rolling Stone as a boyfriend,” she was often quoted as having said. “I slept with three and decided the lead singer was the best bet.” - Marianne Faithfull.
$he just passed - RIP Marianne, you were not only a singer but also a muse to many! The original Stones version is very beautiful as well (she was a muse to Jagger) and my old scouting friends and me are singing it for decades when we sit together. Some fun facts: it was one of the first songs the Stones wrote (they were more kind of a blues cover band before) but released it only as a B-Side the year after Marianne's version. Also: Jimmy Page on acoustic guitar!
Written by her then four year boyfriend - Mick Jagger and his pal Keith Richards. Great song with great production. You can literally hear every single instrument Thank you for a wonderful and timely reaction.
Because you're talking about covers, it's fun to listen to these three: "I Know I'm Losing You" The Temptations 1967 live on the Smothers Brothers Show was a good one. The Faces live 1972, and Rare Earth 1970. There are two versions, an 11:00 minute (recommended) and a 3:00 minute radio version. So fun to listen to the three different interpretations. Love your channel and your passion!
The song written by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) Marianne Faithfull was the original singer. . Later, the Rolling Stones recorded their own version. Jagger & Faithfull were a relationship from 1966 to 1970.
Jay, you absolutely have to see the official video for Stevie Nicks "Edge of 17!" You've reacted to the original, but the live video from 1981 is absolutely phenomenal!
I don't know any guy back in the day that didn't have a crush on her. I sure did. R.I.P. Sweetie. This was her first single. She had many hits. "Summer Nights" is one of my favorites.
Sad to hear of her passing. Very fitting to do her first song here. Her voice was so pure then. It got lower and raspy later from smoking and life. Give a listen to the title track from her 1979 album Broken English and her cover of John Lennon's Working Class Hero from the same album. It also contains The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan which you already did.
Check out Summer Nights, This Little Bird,Come And Stay With Me and Tomorrow's Calling, all great Marianne Faithfull songs.R.I.P Marianne, God bless you!🙏❤⚘
RIP Marianne. Jay, she was Mick Jagger's muse for 2nd half of the 60s. She went on to write 'Sister Morphine' with Jagger/Richards. Her comeback album, 'Broken English' from 79/80 is such a departure from 'As Tears Go By' it is almost hard to believe it is the same singer but what an album. Cannot think of the 60s without thinking of Marianne.
This was a kind gesture. Good track written for her by the Rolling Stones, she was Mick Jagger's girlfriend for a while in the 60's. RIP as she passed away Thursday.
You should listen to her recording of this song she did later in life, with all the changes of her voice it is even more beautiful and poignant than her youthful voice.
Jay, thx for choosing this song - it's one of my favorites. Still, you need to get past the mellow feeling/peaceful vibes her gentle voice gives you and really listen to the lyrics. It is deeply moving and sad -- a person watching children laughing and playing while tears roll down their own face -- the joy they feel is "not for me" -- s/he is lonely and isolated. Maybe these aren't emotions you want to get in touch with right now, but it is a beautiful expression of a place we've all been.
I know she recorded it first, although it was written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and others, but the Stones (more family) recorded it as well and it’s a bit frustrating not hearing the Stones’ version when their earlier (better) stuff is so under-represented on the channel. Here’s a push for more 60s and early 70s Stones. Their 80s and later stuff just doesn’t compare imho.
Sadly she just passed , but one song you may really like was the Metallica song "The Memory Remains" that Faithful sang on as well as appeared in the video. Great one! R.I.P. Marianne
Another female group you need to try The Lennon Sisters look under them on Lawerence Welk. They on their as young girls and still going strong. keep it up good choice
The only Marianne Faithfull CD I have is "Broken English". I like the title track, her cover of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero", and "Why'd Ya Do What You Did" (very risque lyrics). My favorite female artists are Nina Hagen, Grace Slick w. Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Lene Lovich, X, Au Pairs, and X-Ray Spex.
@robertson4619 Keith and Mick wrote it, but decided they didn’t want to record it. They gave it to Marianne. The Stones released their recording a year later. Love this song! I knew it from Marianne first, but only owned the Stones track.
Marianne's boyfriend at the time, Mick Jagger, also recorded this song :) Please check out Francoise Hardy, another female 60s phenom who passed away in the past year! You will be sorry you didn't do it sooner. She sings mostly in French but also did some English songs. Was very popular internationally and was known for her cool style as well as her singing. "All Over the World" is one of her English songs.
Jay, go listen to the Rolling Stones version of this too. They gave this one to her to sing, and she made it a hit. But they recorded it themselves as well, and it is still one of my favorite tunes by the boys.
She passed away yesterday. RIP sweet lady.
I don't think he knew there was no mention of it
No...Didn't hear... RIP Marianne. :(

Such a beautiful song.
As tears go by today😢
I didn’t realize she passed away yesterday. 🙏💔🙏
Well crap. Mick must be rather upset, especially having lost Charlie relatively recently, too.

RIP Marianne - a great talent.
RIP. She was so beautiful. Sad life but I loved the way she reinvented herself more than once.

I had that album and played it endlessly. I didn't realize she passed away. RIP Marianne:(
As Tears Go By - written by the Glimmer Twins, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Great song. Peace out.
She was such an integral part of our music life back in the day. I've missed the early Marianne Faithful voice a lot!
This is the original version from 1964. She recorded it again in 1987 and in 2018. Both of the later recordings are slower in tempo, her voice raspier and deeper with the lyrics taking on a much deeper meaning. R.I.P.

❤❤❤ RIP Marianne
Very appropriate seeing she recently passed RIP 😢
Passed away 30th January 2025
Marianne Faithfull was one of my all time favorite British female singers of the 1960s.
This is great song well sung I think she was 16 written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards their first song as writers RIP Marianne

RIP Marianne; what an amazing life she led. You should try the title track from her seminal album, Broken English.
She has recently passed at the age of 78. So many memories from the 60's with this lady. I remember seeing her in the film 'Girl on a motorcycle' at a midnight movie in 1969. Marianne has some Beatles connections too. She sang backup on Yellow Submarine and Paul nearly proposed to her nanny.
You’ve come a long, long way from just being a hip hop fan. It has been a lot of fun watching your musical journey!
So far! I rarely listen to it anymore
@ I really enjoy when you find a beat that someone sampled and find its origins!
Great song. Rest in Peace Marianne Faithful! 🎶🎼🎵🎤🎧♥️
RIP Marianne Faithfull. What a beautiful voice. ❤

A real cutie back in the day and looked so lovely when she was with Mick and beyond. Beautiful voice. RIP Marianne. ❤❤❤
Rest in Peace Marianne. This is a beautiful song. You need to also do the Rolling Stone original version.
They recorded their version after Marianne. Their demo of it was called "As Time Goes By". I have a bootleg copy of it.
I think that Mick Jagger & Keith Richards wrote the song for her?
@@kevinfroude8679Songwriters: Andrew Loog Oldham / Keith Richards / Mick Jagger.
@johnniekight1879 I have their 1960s greatest hits on CD, it's on there, it's an awesome demo, it sounds like a proper studio recording.
