  • This is a collection of old time radio episodes of Lights Out from 1936 to 1942. The quality varies for obvious reasons but I tried to filter the rougher episode and avoided including repeated stories.
I hope this collection of eerie tales can provide some moments of levity in these dark times. Stay safe and stay inside if you can everyone.

I think it was Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) who said, "I love it when someone turns on the radio (in our times it would be the television), because it reminds me to go read a book". These are well written and the acting is on point. Better than that really?ality crap on tv.

The best thing about listening to these is you're getting a great chilling story while you can mosey about and get things done instead of sitting in front of the idiot box without the mundanity and uniformity of an e-book. Best of both worlds.

Been a fan of radio drama since I first discovered it almost 15 years ago and its wonderful seeing so many people, especially the younger ones who never grew up with radio shows, discover these treasures.

    • @nihilioellipsis

I am also pleased that younger people are into it. I grew up listening to them on the radio in the 70s. When these younger people encounter them, they have no trouble recognizing the quality. The storytelling is so good. I think those younger people are going to have an easier time discriminating between good and bad movies and TV also. There is lots of TV and movies that are far inferior to great radio drama.

I agree, they are intense. Arch Obler had a knack for creating grisly stories. Other shows in this genre typically depended on ghosts, but Obler focused on the cruelty of one person against another.

As grim and grisly as these are, I've read that the earliest Cooper episode were REALLY extreme. Supposedly only one episode from the Wyllis Cooper period exists...does anyone know where to find it or has heard it?

The youngest of three, I am so fortunate my father was born in the 30’s and raised us old school. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and listened to more old time radio than I watched television. I feel it’s 100 percent the reason I have a great imagination. Love all those shows and even though my family has passed, it keeps me close to them.

I'd like to imagine that the "most played" graph is the way it is because people couldn't take the tension, especially considering some of the ghastly stories before, and had to skip ahead to hear how "happy ending" turned out.

The spider gets my hackles up. But the real recording of a Halloween night in a castle for Armed Forces radio is fascinating. It's a testament to the power of the mind and imagination. The true power of the theater of the imagination.

The Chicken Heart and the Dark are not original Lights Out episodes...They are from a 1962 LP of Obler's horror stories called Drop Dead. The original Chicken Heart has been lost for many years, however the original script is available online.

Thanks for some lite entertainment during the long drone of covington scientists terrifying my kids with (your all going to die)! Again thanks pal.

The almost last story reminds me of the live TV Analog play and also the longer movie called 'Patterns'. Great play/movies. It's a story about an executive employee who worked for decades for the same company almost from the beginning of it who then is treated so badly emotionally he ends up dying of a heart attack at work. His name is Mr Briggs and the evil boss is named Mr Ramsey instead.
It's a white collar story of how businesses/employers will treat loyal long term older employees like dirt just so they will quit as they bring on younger ones to replace them.

Old man rant alert, before DVR’s Satellite radio, streaming and UA-cam you’d have to know the time something would be on and I would set my alarm to watch the TV version of Lights Out 4:30 am mon - fri and since where I lived OTR was on only 30 min everyday it could be months before you’d hear another episode of this. Oh bread was a nickel just kidding. Rant over.
