"The Borgia family is the subject of a so-called ‘black legend’, a pejorative term that has been used since the Middle Ages to refer to Spain and Spaniards.
The Borgias’ black legend is one of corruption, abuse of power, orgies, sex and murder. These rumours spread especially during the reign of Pope Alexander VI, a member of the family. Alexander was even referred to as the Antichrist. According to eyewitnesses, when he died Satan prowled the death chamber and a black dog-an envoy of the Devil-ran up and down the aisles of the Vatican. The brutal rule of Pope Alexander and his family led to a kind of demonization of the Borgia family. But it is precisely the lack of scruples, the brewing of poisons, the incest and various cruelties that continue to hold a certain fascination for us.
1. ALEXANDER VI
Rodrigo Borgia was born in 1431 near Valencia. He studied law in Bologna and, through is uncle Pope Calixtus III, her rose through the church hierarchy. As vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Catholic church, he became one of the richest men in Europe. As a cardinal he fathered four children who he later legitimised when he became pope. His election to the papacy was funded by the sale of offices, extortion and bribes of all kinds. Through an alliance with Ascanio Sforza he was elected pope on August 11 1492 and named himself from then on Alexander VI, an allusion to Alexander the Great. "

"Rund um die Familie Borgia kursiert eine sogenannte „schwarze Legende“- mit diesem Begriff wurden seit dem Spätmittelalter negative Berichterstattungen über Spanien und Spanier bezeichnet.
Die schwarze Legende über die Borgias handelt von Korruption, Machtmissbrauch, Orgien, Sex und Mord. Besonders während des Pontifikats von Papst Alexander VI, einem Spross der Familie, mehrten sich diese Gerüchte. Alexander wurde zuweilen gar als Antichrist bezeichnet. Als er starb, soll laut Zeitzeugen der Teufel im Sterbezimmer umhergeschlichen und ein schwarzer Hund als Gesandter des Teufels die Gänge des Vatikans auf und ab gelaufen sein. Die brutale Herrschaft Papst Alexanders und seiner Verwandtschaft führte zu einer Art Dämonisierung der Familie Borgia. Doch gerade durch die Skrupellosigkeit, Giftmischerei, Inzest und andere Grausamkeiten übt dieses Pontifikat bis heute eine gewisse Faszination aus.
1. ALEXANDER VI
Rodrigo Borgia wurde im Jahre 1431 in der Nähe von Valencia geboren. Er studierte Jura in Bolognia und stieg durch seinen Onkel Papst Kalixt III in der kirchlichen Hierarchie auf. Als Vizekanzler der Heiligen Römischen Kirche wurde er zu einem der reichsten Männer Europas. Als Kardinal zeugte er vier Kinder, die er später, als er schon Papst war, anerkannte. Seine Wahl zum Papst wurde durch Ämterkauf, Erpressung und Bestechungen aller Art gefördert. Durch eine Allianz mit Ascanio Sforza konnte er die Papstwahl am 11. August 1492 für sich entscheiden und nannte sich fortan Alexander VI, in Anspielung auf Alexander den Großen. "

Grâce à une alliance avec Ascanio Sforza, il est élu pape le 11 août 1492 et prend le nom d’Alexandre VI, en allusion à Alexandre le Grand. "
