I lived by that this morning and attacked one very disorganised place in my apartment. Not a whole room - that is far too much, just one space in my living room cabinet. (I can really recommend to only go at it for half an hour or twenty minutes at a time, to net get overwhelmed!) I threw away quite some paper things (I hate throwing that away, but I really, really have to, so I bit the bullet). And I collected a few games that have their place elsewhere, took them there, just to find I had to get at that container, too - as there wasn't enough space in that. So more throwing out (a card game where the cards showed signs from playing and the box was in tatters, and a game I never played since I bought it 30 years ago - so out it went). And while I did not finish that space in my cabinet - I made it definitely better, can do the rest after I return home from work, dust it, reorganize it.
I love "not perfect but better" - and I really need to keep in mind that you cannot organize clutter! But just what I did this morning already made a visible difference to my place. One less corner of chaos. It looks organised, not perfect, but as if the things were there for a reason. I can always prettify that later

@@franhunne8929 i suggest the "multiple pass" apprach. Get things in ONE room done, in very manageable steps you choose. Then, go back to where you started and attack it again. Maybe more thrown out, or better organization.
Do remember to TOSS before you ORGANIZE. Otherwise, you are organizing clutter, which serves no purpose.
      GOOD LUCK!

I love how you make decluttering ‘doable’. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be expensive, and it can be done in small steps.

You can have a tree company spray the Silver Birch trees to prevent spring/ early summer seed fluff!
I thought that we Cottonwood Trees
Cricket? I never even saw that option. Probably because I have absolutely no cricket traits!
OMGOSH, I absolutely love the polka dots! They are perfect! Beautiful room, both of them are perfection!

I feel the lack of storage space. In my country there are no built in closets, so you have to buy furniture. I moved two times during the last three years and didn't have a wardrobe for all this time, because the budget didn't allow to buy one. I am a cricket and it hurt my soul living out of boxes. You cannot unpack if you have nowhere to put the stuff. I finally got a wardrobe for free last month and I was so thankful. Now everything is extremly tidy as I prefer it to be.

Cass, I only recently stumbled on to Clutterbug and I have been hooked ever since. You are the first person that has ever made the whole "declutter, sort, and organize" make sense for me. I'm definitely a bee, my husband is a ladybug, and daughter is a butterfly. Your categories and philosophy really helped me to understand that we're not messy, we just organize differently. Love these makeovers, they're practical and inspirational. I'm actually tackling my own home one little corner at a time and have shared your videos with others. Wins all around!

I am a butterfly, but do not have much room in my home to show off all my lovely things, and am really lacking in storage, or any where to put storage! I defiantly have too much stuff, but as I live alone, and only go out of the house to walk my dog, due to acute anxiety, I have to pay someone if I want help, or need to get rid of stuff. I did find out that Oxfam in England will come and pick things up from my home that I am donating, so am starting with that. I love watching your videos, as you are so lovely and happy and inspirational, despite all the things you have on your plate, with your own busy life. Thank you for helping us all. Blessings and hugs from Jilly and licks from Madge the black rescue greyhound, from a hot West Devon, England. xxx

I am a total ladybug but my husband is a butterfly. I took your advice and defaulted to his organization style, and now our house is more organized, and he can easily put stuff away.
I prefer visual simplicity, but I must say it has really helped me. If I could have everything hidden, I would, but then I have to tell my husband constantly where stuff is. Now that we have are organized with his style in mind, he is empowered to put stuff where it belongs because he can see where it goes. Lol 😆 thanks Cas!!!!

I sold my house last year and finally made a decision on a place and have moved (mostly) into the new place. Boxes everywhere and trying to follow your system. Purge, purge, purge baby. Thank the powers that be it is only me.
That said, this video was for me. I haven't decided if I am a ladybug or a bee. My living room: ladybug. My office and craft room: bee. My kitchen: half and half. Or maybe I am a cricket. I'm not a butterfly so at least I eliminated one type. Great video. Thank you for your wonderful upbeat personality and cheering us on.

I love this episode because I don’t feel like I fit any specific category either and have watched the videos on each personality type and I’m a little bit of each or at least 3. I love things hidden but like things to be organized, I keep things I need to get rid of, some things need to be visual, I’m either super organized or a total mess, I also have lists on top of lists of things I want to accomplish but there is so much it’s overwhelming etc. I think I want to be a type A but get too overwhelmed but if I had a magic wand everything would be perfectly organized, labeled, clean lines, etc.
Edit: my point is I’m glad I’m not the only one that doesn’t seem to fit in just one category lol

Cover the pool (with tarps if that's what it takes), and lay down tarps in the backyard - we harvest mulberries from our trees by laying down tarps because then the berries don't get lost in the grass, but it will make it way easier to collect the pods (I did the same sort of thing in January the night before my mom and I drove my truck home because the truck doesn't have a bed cover yet - all we had to do in the morning before we left was pull the tarp out by the corners and voila! the snow was out of the bed and the bed was completely dry, saving me 1/2-1 hour of work); stake the tarps down if it will be windy at all. There will probably still be seed pods that get in the grass, but it will be a heck of a lot less work to clean up the yard.

My whole house looks like a tornado has hit everything! It's extremely overwhelming! I have never been able to organize. This summer I want to work on decluttering and trying to get organized. I love the polka dots that you put up in the croffice. The big girl room was adorable. Thank you Cas for your videos.

I cannot beleive those shelves were $60 USD - that's so worthwhile an investement (if you do have the spare funds, obviously) because it made all the difference.
I have to say, that I felt this lovely lady was in an unusual position for her? I say that because I felt even her dump and junk storage rooms were more organised than most - and that Tupperware cupboard was a thing of organisational beauty 😊

Then I got pregnant, and the junk room had to be turned into a nursery, with a deadline and all! It worked out great to get old junk we weren't using out of our house! (Mostly old used stuff from family that they didn't want anymore, to help us get started with living on our own. A lot of stuff we used and appreciated, but some of it was just too much and ended up in the room of doom 😆)

This is such a realistic approach to any kind of problem. In my experience when something is overwhelming, it's best to start small and imperfect than it is procrastinate and never do it!
In some point along the way, magic happens... My momentum and self-confidence builds up and then I am practically unstoppable!
The other thing I've noticed is tat, even when implementing my first imperfect solution, I get clarity and inspiration and I find it so easy to improve things. My "imperfect" solution acts as a stepping stone towards an better one. I think of it as a first draft of a book. Without a first draft, the masterpiece would never exist ...

Enjoy cuckoo-ville! Congratulations on the new house! We had a long horrendous escrow-from-hell when buying this home but it was worth it! So, your test is the birch trees and everything else will go perfectly and you will get through this and live happily ever after.

Our house is like your birch tree! The minute we start to make headway, some catastrophe comes out of nowhere to undermine or seriously interrupt the clean-up momentum.
*** Could you do a video addressing how one spouse's organizing style, or lack thereof, can sabotage an area once it's been organized? I have ADHD and need a clear, uncluttered system so as not to become overwhelmed. My spouse has no discipline whatsoever when it comes to picking up, putting away, keeping tidy. I'd be interested in hearing how you might handle clients who have majorly conflicting organizing styles.*** Bless you for your great work and positive suggestions.

The phrase, “would you trade that stuff for this space?” hit me hard. I have so much stuff that “may come in handy,” that is preventing me from enjoying my space. That is going to be my new mantra through my own declutter.

Regarding the story at the end, hang in there!!! Maybe the storms will turn out to be a good thing? Instead of a steady trickle of the seed pods, all of them will fall down within a week? And then they will all be picked up. Every seed pod you pick up this year, is a seed pod you never ever have to pick up again. (Because you'll be gone by next June)
I'm rooting for you!!! Hang in there!!! And maybe have a contest among your kids, with a prize for whoever collects the most seed pods? They might have fun helping you, and that could bring happy energy to the whole thing. (Maybe, if they're game for such a thing)
Congratulations on buying a new home!!!! 😃

What a great room makeover for a little girl, simple but beautiful. Loved your seed pod story, we had a maple tree with those helicopter seeds, and we had it cut down ( it was dying) what a relief it was from helicopters over flowing the gutters etc.

Your story time segment completely resonated with me…geez, we have a similar tree issue in our yard but it’s Elm seed pods! My neighbor calls it “oatmeal season” because it looks like our yard is covered in mushy oatmeal after a rain storm, and we’ve had rain EVERY day in the month of June! Now, I will spend the ENTIRE month of July pulling newly sprouted Elm trees out of my lawn, flower beds and gardens. I wish we had taken these trees down years ago!!!
