      My daughter has lost over 50 pounds so far with NOOM. It truly changed her habits and the way she dealt with food. The group sessions online were excellent along with her counselors. I told her, its not live to eat, but eat to live. I really appreciate this program because of her changes.

    I decluttered my kitchen with my baby granddaughter. I didn't know it was body-doubling. I'm serious. I sat her in a jumper and gave her a different toy or snack while we "chatted". We did this off and on for a couple of hours. She was happy and Grammie got so much accomplished.

      I wonder if cats count. I was working in the kitchen doing what was necessary to find the counter and going through the cabinets to make room for the counter stuff that had no home. Tossing trash and putting some things in the pantry or elsewhere to didn't need to be in the kitchen just yet or were seldom used, or to the donate box.
      They would check my progress continually. I would shoo them off, but they were back again.
      I did have a lot of success.
      So maybe cats count, too.

      @@helsheubner6414 I like to start with trash. Packacking. Things that I thought I would repair, but looking at it now I know I won't. Then some things that you know you will be able to part with. Especially if they are bigger (if you can get to it, otherwise they will wait until you dig it out). Try breaking it down into tiny projects. Perhaps there's a box of clothes you shoved in there. Try them on. If they don't fit, you can take it to somewhere it can be used. That gets the first box out and you have gotten rid of clothes you won't wear anyway. Perhaps some decor you weren't ready to let go of at the time, but since your style changed and now you are. Stuff like that. Just scan for something you can reach and are ready to part with. Once you've started momentum will come. Maybe it's something as simple as some items that belong in other places in your home that you shoved in there during a tidy.

      Though I didn't know the term (body doubling) at the time, I now realize that during my school-age years, my mom and I were body doubling for each other! When I was doing my homework after school/dinner, if I was off in my room or the living room by myself, I'd get distracted or off track.
      So we'd sit at the dining table together. It helped me stay focused (and have help nearby if I had questions about my schoolwork). She was a teacher and she'd grade papers or work on lesson plans, and I think it helped keep her company. In some weird way, it was good quality time for us, even though it wasn't very social.

    This video is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for! My basement is basically like this but on a grander scale. Things from my moms house, things that I need to look through but haven’t got through, sentimental items, etc.
    My husband and I both keep intense schedules and barely get time to ourselves so this is extremely motivating, eye opening, and hopefully what will help me get my basement (family but currently storage room) in check. Thank you Matt, Amy, and Cas for this! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it!

    • @tgayer1
      @tgayer1 Рік тому +9

      I had a hard time wanting to take on my basement, so I went through categories of items like Marie Kondo advises. First I went through all of my old clothing, then all of my old teaching materials, then seasonal decor. After that, there were just a few random things left. I brought everything upstairs, a few boxes at a time, to sort through because I don’t like being in the basement, and it was almost all going to be leaving the house anyway.

    • @nicolezawacki3491
      @nicolezawacki3491 Рік тому +1

      @@tgayer1 same with me I don’t like being in the basement. Even when I moved in I wasn’t fond of the space and now I just completely avoid it except for when I’m doing laundry.
      I have ADHD and OCD so I’ve been trying the Marie Kondo method (I even have the book and have read it) but it gets hard because if my high sense of sentimentality doesn’t get in the way, the OCD does. It’s like a walking contradiction… which makes me only want to give up quicker.
      I decided though that this coming weekend I’m going to buy 3 totes- one for keep, one for donate, and one for unsure. Then go through one box at a time while sitting upstairs and go from there.

    • @Y3w3lz
      @Y3w3lz Рік тому +1

      I agree with @tgayer1, take it in small chunks. Either just a couple of boxes/bags/piles or 30 mins at a time. The point is that whatever you decide is leaving the house you take action on right then. Especially the donations, put them in your car as soon as you are done for that session and drop them off within 3 days or schedule a pick-up for the big stuff asap if you have the option in your area.
      That works for me, at first it will feel like you're not doing enough but you'll get there... as long as you're not bringing more stuff in. Even if you have to take a break for whatever reason you'll be able to notice the difference.

    I'm down to six boxes of clutter. No where to put sewing and craft supplies (as partner is hoarder) but am sure don't need everything. Last year cleaned out attic, sanitzied, re-insulated and only put back what I really needed for home and seasonal (all organized). It seemed as if the attic breathed a sigh of relief. Everytime look at attic it is amazing. Such a great feeling.

(Dana K White of "a Slob Comes Clean," and Dawn "the Minimal Mom") PLUS two others who I find very helpful: Kallie of "But First Coffee," and the one I think will really resonate with your situation, Marissa of "A to Zen Life" (she talks about her sentimental attachment due to difficult childhood and loss of a parent at a young age). All 4 of these lovely ladies talk about where/how to begin when you're overwhelmed, have different approaches for different mindsets or stages of life, or different scenarios. I could never go without lids for the bins, though. I live in Florida and it doesn't matter how clean your house is, there will be bugs, especially in the garage (we don't have basements here). 😬 Also, with all the humidity and rain we get, I'd be worried all that nicely organized stuff would get ruined.
    I do use clear bins so I can see what's inside.

      I was thinking to myself, it's all well and good to keep the lids off of things you know are going to be added to often, but that very full plushie bin without a lid is just asking for bugs to move in 😰Really, anything that isn't added to often should probably have a lid. And things that ARE added to often, could still have a lid, just sitting unsecured on top, so you just lift and toss instead of plain old toss. Would still keep the dust out! Admittedly, I imagine that it's a lot easier to get a kid not to completely latch the lid if the lid isn't there to be latched. Depends on the kid, I suppose!

Having a ladybug police bf, Mr. Ultra Organized, I have also learned this from him. Lids also take 1 second to take off, and put back on. And, where you put the seasonal/holiday decor, I would have moved all of that to another area out of sight so you can have that space for more storage. We do a Prepper Pantry in OUR basement - enough food/drinks/supplies for 100 days at a time! But, I am SO proud of this couple, and their basement!

    The thing that changed for me was deciding that I would bless people with the valuable things I no longer use. Before, I always saw the value in things (antiques, collectibles) and believed I needed to be responsible and sell these things. Things piled up because I hated the process of selling. Besides, I didn't have the time to fuss with buyers. We finally decided to forget selling and just donate to people who would appreciate the item or gifting them to charities. Since then we've had so much fun gifting the things we once loved. and we are completely organized now. Win-Win.

Sometimes when I iron clothes and my mom and I are in the room together it helps. Thanks for sharing this with us. Amazing how quickly you got the basement done and how incredible it looked...so happy for them.
    I hope you kept the memory box lids though, because otherwise their memory stuff will get dusty and/or bugs/moths will get in over time. I put my lids under the boxes on the shelf of boxes I go in often and I just "lie" the lids on top (unlocked) of the boxes I go in less often, so I can still throw things in quick. But that way the box content is protected.

    The thing I find the hardest with decluttering is getting all the stuff out of the home. You can only put out so much trash and recycle each week and you can only put so many donations in your car at a time. It takes longer to get rid of the stuff than it does to clean it out in the first place and if anyone in my family sees what’s going out a significant amount of it ended up back in the house.

      It might be helpful to only declutter one room or zone the day before garbage/recycling day, so that way it is out to the curb right away. Love the term body double, never heard it before but that's exactly what I need.
    We just moved from a 1400 sq foot rental to an 1800 sq ft rental. Now most people would be dancing in the streets for that size difference. However the fact is I have been working on decluttering my house, storage shed and garage for 2 years. Hurray hurrah, I have been following you, Dana and Dawn and have learned so much and used so many of all your tips & tricks to decluttering. Sorry this so long. Any way I had accomplished 90% of decluttering the house, so packing it up and moving was the easy part, but the garage was another story. In my head i had decluttered most of what was left from my decluttering sessions but was far from physically done. My husband and son worked on his side of tools , then i cleared a wall for my son & daughter in law to stack all containers from a huge wooden shelf thst held all my totes of " to go through items" and they were like why don't you just put in storage shed at their house (which thankfully last fall i decluttered) and I said no, these totes (most of them) will be sorted and emptied! The majority of what you see will be donated! Of course their response was ok we can move it all to stoarage shed later.
    Well, first i started on day one (we had 4 days) then my daughter came to helpand in 2 days she was amazed that I actually was sorting but the majority was being donated, i told her because of you, Dana & Dawn, I knew I was ready to part with most items. She actually took probably a large tote over all to her house😊
    It truly was amazing. When my sun came back to get a few seasonal garden items (we have no shed at our new rental, so he will bring them in spring when needed, He said (looking at our over flowing my van and her big suv)ok how are you going to fit all that in the new house. We smiled and said nope it's all donations 😊, he said wow that's a great job, I never thought you would really get rid of all that. My daughter said she didn't either, but i just kept saying "donate"
    So thank you so very much fir all your kind words and encouragement, being nonjudgemental and supportive.
    Now I am on to phase 2 of the sorting as I unpack and continuing to donate so much more! By the way my husband was shocked too and now says " oh we don't need this, or you can donate this" so it's true what all 3 of you say... get rid of your stuff first snd others in house will do the same❤
