Props for digging up this relic of hot wheels history. 20:45 i have found way to many of these at thrift stores. Not one had functioning lights. There are a few other castings with fun gimmicks that i can think of: Side Kick: weird sliding cockpit thing that is activated by pulling on the exhaust. The Heavyweights Series: a bunch of work trucks that were released in the early 70s, each with a unique moving feature. There is a commercial for them somewhere on youtube that emits dangerous levels of charm. ConVertAbles: odd series of cars that do weird things when put in hot water i guess. Idk, all of mine are broken. Ford Taurus Stocker: A red Nascar that was exclusive to the Ford Auto Assembly playset. It can be taken apart into 3 pieces, the base, body, and engine. Its extremely rare and obscure. Sizzlers: Motorized hot wheels! Some came with a huge bumper that is hilariously called the "Mouse Mustache". Circuit Crashers: Monster Trucks that explode when crashed! Crack-Ups: cars from the early 80s that have flipable panels that show damage when you crash into them. Tech Trax: very short lived series of cars that could bend in the middle and gave them a sort of suspension, or that was the idea anyways. They never really worked. Hot Wheels ID: Cars with micro chips in them so that you can download them into a racing game. Pretty short lived series as nobody cared about the game. Steering Rigs: Semi trucks that would turn the cab from a steering wheel mounted in the trailer. They're tricky to get the hang of, but satisfying when you do. Revealers: The cars themselves are dayglow and reek of the 80s, but they came wrapped in a paper that would supposedly dissolve when dipped in water. Also, the packaging would give you a Dairy Queen coupon for a free ice cream(expired in 1984). Get one and see if a DQ will let you redeem it. I cannot wait for the Color Shifters video!
Oh no! There were even more examples that I had listed but it looks like youtube never posted the edit! I'll see if I can remember most of them. Top Speed / Solar Flares: Translucent plastic cars that can twist in the middle. Hot wheels said it made them better on the track, but they are actually way too lightweight, causing them to crash too easily. X-V Racers (1980s): Gyro powered stunt cars. Not much is really known about the operation of these cars even though they are fairly common. Motorized XV Racers (1990s): same concept as the Sizzlers cars, but lighter and faster. Scorchers: spring powered cars? Not exactly sure how these work, all of mine are broken. Power Command: Pull-back-n-go cars that can be locked in place, then launched by tapping on their rear spoiler. Shift Kickers: same concept as Power Command, but they are launched by "shifting" a lever on the top of the car. Mini Race Timers: micro-scale hot wheels that could be worn as a watch and displayed the time in their windshield. Flip-Outs: Cars with spring-loaded flippers on the bottom. When crashed they'll flip violently into the air.
There's another 1 Hot wheels tank called invader. It has a gimmick to shoot. But some years later, the invader does not comes with a bullet attached anymore
I think they probably discontinued the use of the bullet since it was rather unreliable. I remember having 2 of them as a kid, and while one of them worked okay (about 75% of the time), the other one never shot farther than 1-2 cm and often ended up getting stuck halfway out of the barrel
Our very first UA-cam videos were filled with a Hotwheels video racer. The part about it that frustrated me the most as a kid was the lack of storage, It could only record for a couple minutes. @@pixelcat29 I think I saw that before somewhere(maybe no one of the Hot Wheels tho) with detachable train cars and cargos. Pretty sure there also was a playset with rail, station and stuff.
I have a three-way tie for my favorite gimmick cars: The first are the Turbo Glo series of cars released around 2006, which were basic rechargeable electric cars that had underglow-style lights in the base of the cars. They got a few of their own track sets as well (though the second one, Street Duel, seems to be much rarer than the Turbo Tunnel set) before being canned in 2007. It would be nice to see them brought back, preferably with the ability to change the color of the lights via some sort of remote. The second is the Rumblers series from 2008, which were already covered in this video. Admittedly, it would’ve been nice if these particular vehicles were fully compatible with regular Hot Wheels track sets (they required their own dedicated track sets to be used correctly), but otherwise the gimmick of having oversized engines that shook and glowed red when rolled was a fun distraction. The third and final series are the Tech Trax series of cars released only in 2004. The gimmick of these cars were that they had both special functions - some could twist on an axis, others could bend in the center - and were customizable; More specifically, you could take apart the cars and add or remove small metal weights that changed how the car performed on the track based on weight distribution. This weight distribution gimmick worked in tandem with the Tech Trax track sets (it was basically an attempt by Hot Wheels to imagine what a futuristic, highly customizable version of their Hot Wheels tracks would look like some time down the line), which itself featured a bunch of customizable track pieces and gimmicks, to create a super advanced version of the Hot Wheels cars and track system we were already familiar with. Sadly, much like the rest of the gimmicks I’ve already listed, this series was dropped in early 2005, and a lot of its later concepts were cannibalized into the Acceleracers series. And out of all the gimmicks I’ve listed, this is the one I wish Mattel/Hot Wheels would bring back, even if only for older/adult collectors and fans. It just has so much potential that it feels like a crime that said potential is just being left on the table.
I remember one hot wheeel gimmick that basically allowed you to make your own car you can select from some car bodies, wheels, engines etc it was really cool

Seeing the Rumblers made me nostalgic and reminded me also of Crashers, Modifighters, Rev-Ups and Maniacs (that electronic toy with the dude you can make him vomit). Also the Super Slammers, Micromagnetics and Custom Motors (and other gimmicks with the Monster Jam subline). There is probably enough ground to cover for a part 2.
fun fact: the shark bite car as seen in 7:50 had an appearance in the roblox game Vehicle Simulator, but it was for the 2018 hotwheels collab so im lucky to get one :D
Im surprised you didnt cover the Roboriders line! Was a 2002-2003 time piece, where they literally had little robot figures, fully posable, that mounted onto car bases. Came with weapons and parts to transform them, sort of, into cars! Heck, they had their own tracks and even a movie! I saw the vhs of it at an antique mall a few years ago, still kicking myself for not buying that weird find.
one of my favorite gimmicks is when they had the rapid transit, they are like, trains meet hotwheels, you can attach cars and in theory make it as long as you want.
Yeah, there is another kinda recent one called Cloak and Dagger. There are other older ones like the Hyperliner, Volkswagen New Beetle Cup and Morris Mini.

18:53 I need the Hot Dogger AAAAAAAAAAAAA where buy
pongon videos are the definition of weird but clever

PONGON! if you want to get rid of the drawing on the car at 7:13, then use hand sanitizer, it works, i've fixed stuff with dat before.
Or something that contains alcohol, just don't try beer, it's a bad idea

The bendy hot weels bracelet and necklace drip goes HARD as hell ngl
Seeing the Rumblers made me nostalgic and reminded me also of Crashers, Modifighters, Rev-Ups and Maniacs (that electronic toy with the dude you can make him vomit). Also the Super Slammers, Micromagnetics and Custom Motors (and other gimmicks with the Monster Jam subline). There is probably enough ground to cover for a part 2.
I FORGOT ABOUT THE MANIACS DUDE
Ughhh I knew there would be tons that I forgot... I'll see if i can do a part 2 sometime
I can’t wait to see more about those color shifters!!!!

Babe wake up, Polygon Donut posted a Hot Wheels video
alternative ending:she says who’s “polygon donut?”
@@Mrduckythethird Alternative ending 2: You don't have a girlfriend and it's all in your head
I have used the "See Me Rollin'" in DnD before lol. Nothing like letting a toy car determine how much damage Magic Missile does.
fun fact: the shark bite car as seen in 7:50 had an appearance in the roblox game Vehicle Simulator, but it was for the 2018 hotwheels collab so im lucky to get one :D
They were called Robo Wheels I thought?
Were they?? Right, yes, they were! After doing some searching youre right, my bad. I miss those things. @@Xbell-The-Road-Rippers-Expert

one of my favorite gimmicks is when they had the rapid transit, they are like, trains meet hotwheels, you can attach cars and in theory make it as long as you want.
woohoo!! pongo donut back!!! time for the silly!!!

There's an openable body gimmick hot wheels which I've owned back in the day, it's called Ground FX.
Yeah, there is another kinda recent one called Cloak and Dagger. There are other older ones like the Hyperliner, Volkswagen New Beetle Cup and Morris Mini.

_Ah yes... Pongondonnon talking about Heated Rollers._
(This is just what I need to give my brain something to gnaw on that doesn't upset it - it's been very skittish lately...)
Edit: I would absolutely watch another Hot Wheels video about Hot Wheels that aren't actually cars
Edit 2, electric boogaloo:
14:07 with over 150 million views, I guess I shouldn't be surprised Polygon has heard of my latest obsession, but it jumpscared me anyway
Love the painted nails :3

I actually have this! A while back when I was younger, my grandmother allowed me to take it from her home (because she took care of me most of the time at the time), and now it just sits in a room in my house, never being used. It still works, just a bit broken.
I remember there was a line of hot wheels that turn into balls, if I’m not mistaken it was call “ballistic”, but I’m not sure, also want to say about the rapid transit, hot wheels that I miss and I think were a cool concept
Unrelated but I remember using the exact stock photo at 6:04 for a science project I did about RNG. Nice to see it again.
10:30 monsert energy‼️⁉️ corbonater hotwheel‼️⁉️
