A small difference between shi'i and sunni mahdi is that in shi'ism he's called "المهدي المنتظر" Or the awaited mahdi. Giving him a messiah-like status. While in sunni Islam he's someone who will come whenever the end times are near to unite muslims...mainly meaning he's not awaited. But will come whenever the end time comes. So sunnis aren't waiting for him to save them, they view him as more of a sign than a messiah

As per Quran all believers are like friends to each other helping to raise Islam, forming community, spreading God words to non Muslims and sharing good and telling people what is wrong and don't do. The main difference between Sunni and Shia in regards to AlMahdi is that Shia view him as a saviour, and they believe he never died and that he's on earth somewhere waiting for his time to reappear as per Allah's guidance. Sunnis believe AlMahdi hasn't been born yet and that he will appear at the end of times as a Muslim leader, but not as a saviour-like figure. Both Sunni and Shia believe in the Messiah though, and believe he will accompany AlMahdi.

Mahdi isnt the messiah. He will lead the army yes, but the messiah is Jesus himself. Jesus as will come back as a normal human being, not a prophet. He will stand behind the Mahdi and help him in defeating the Dajjal.
Yes, mahdi is in Sunni and Shia belief system but not in islam. In true islam, there is no mahdi belief. Quran never mentions him. Since it was not preserved, legends from other religions began to creep into it, such as mahdi and the return of the Savior Jesus, even though the Qur’an says that Jesus died and other signs of the Hour, even though the Qur’an says that it will come suddenly, meaning that you will not know it coming .

Prophet Muhammad spoke of Al-Mahdi, saying that he would have his same name and same father's name and even will be a descendant of him, meaning his name will be Muhammad son of Abdullah and he will be the prophet's descendant meaning he will belong to Bani Hashim. He is also said to be lost and sinful at first but eventually repents and becomes a great leader that will basically be the final leader before the Messiah Jesus

Mahdi is a belief in the sunni system. It was foretold by the prophet that he will come and lead the people against tyranny before the second coming of jesus.
The Mahdi isn't a messiah he's more of a Leader an actual Imam of the Muslims who even Jesus pbuh understands that this leader of the Muslims is ahead of him in leadership at least until after Fajr when he arrives to kill the dajjal then the Mahdi kinda fades from mention and Jesus takes over. Firstly, it is prudent to respect al-Ghumarī, even if he be of the moderns, he is widely considered to be the greatest Ḥadīth scholar of the 20th century, and he is one of the few in the Sunnī tradition to write an entire text on the Mahdī. He specifically chose “al-Mahdī, the Anticipated” in the title of his work. This is sufficient to disprove your hypothesis.
Secondly, we can very easily mention major classical and post-classical Sunnī scholars that have also used the epithet. Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī for instance in his (القول المختصر في علامات المهدي المنتظر) “The Abridged Summation on the Signs of al-Mahdī, the Anticipated” also employs the epithet in his title. Had you done your research you would readily know this. The argument that the “the anticipated” is a key differentiator between Sunnī and Shīʿī theologians is made by certain Salafī personalities on social media. The intention is to project a hyper-messianism onto Shīʿism and deny it in Sunnism, to de-emphasize the epochal role of the Imām and demote him to the ranks of a righteous Caliph who is quickly sieged and dethroned by the Dajjāl. The Salafī Mahdī is a fictitious, polemical anti-Shīʿī Mahdī. This is not credible in the least as it contradicts many very well established Sunnī traditions.
Finally, (انتظار الفرج عبادة) is used in the context of the Mahdī by many Sunnī scholars.
The real difference between the Sunnī and (Twelver) Shīʿī positions on the Mahdī go back to to the dispute over the succession to the Prophet (p) as either the institution of the Caliphate or the Imāmate. And most significantly: the Shīʿī belief in the Mahdī as the twelfth and terminal Imām, his historical birth, minor and major occultation, and the minor resurrection of some historical personalities (الرجعة) that happens during his reign and succeeds him after his death. As far as the signs and events that precede his emergence, the most salient of them are largely shared between both camps, but in greater quantity and detail within the Shīʿī corpora.

Sunnis believe AlMahdi hasn't been born yet and that he will appear at the end of times as a Muslim leader, but not as a saviour-like figure.
