Norwegian fisherman here ... I was om my fathers 33 meter boat in 1980, 12 years old as a turist for a month, and the first three days I was down a red bucket :D. It was not until the cook convinced me to eat som wholemeal bread that I got better. 30 years at sea since, have not felt a thing, no matter the movements! Not white bread! Dark, wholemeal bread!
I watch a number of UA-cam sailing shows and after watching this episode it confirmed why I watch Delos. It is all about demeanor, attitude, humor, and just watching someone you like. Keep up the good work!
I find steering the boat manually (no autopilot) causes me to focus more on the horizon and what's going on outside my body and helps reduce the feeling of sickness and always gets me out of my "misery zone" :)
This episode took me right back to when my Dad would take me, my brother and sister out on Lake Michigan when we were kids to fish in a 18ft boat in swell and chop, much like what Delos experienced. One of us would puke, then the puke chain reaction would take place, all three of us hurling for hours. My Dad on the other hand, solid as a rock. But much like you Dan O, whoever was the worst, my Dad would tell them to drive and focus on the horizon...it worked. The worst mistake was laying down and staring at something fixed in the boat, which seemed to accentuate the rocking and rolling. @17:39 Brian is doing the hurly circle...blahhhhh
Take the wheel as soon as you feel that seasickness is starting to come. It helped my first wife. Do not wait until seasickness has fully subsided. Then she steered until she was so tired that she could fall asleep if it was quick to get to the bunk.
i know Karen, you have to deal with most of the baby duties while sailing, but man when Brian hears the baby make a noise and immediately springs up (while sick) I can't help but feel for him. I envy the level of partnership you two have established. Happy anniversary. Much love -Kurty
Not a sailor but a single dad of 4 who has had the flu at the same time as one of the kids. I think cleaning up puke while on my knees with a bucket for me to puke in was one of the roughest 2 days of my life. Kazza you are a real trooper, Brian not to bad either!!!???
11 years together. Congrats...I remember when Karin came aboard, I guess I have been here for awhile, LOL. Such a treasure of memories you are building for your daughter.
Been there several times in my past life at sea with the Royal Navy, even been seasick on an Aircraft Carrier! Nothing you can do about it until your brain has unscrambled all the messages its receiving and does a defrag!! Keep up the great videos been in my current job for eleven years guess what I have been watching for nearly the same amount of time!!
happy happy anniversary brian and karin. may you have many more happy sailing years ahead. love and hugs to sierra too. take care and stay safe always.
Closing your eyes lying down blocking your dominant ear with your arm or pillow should help with motion sickness. Not fighting the motions but going with the flow of movements is also key so being tucked between pillows or such helps.
Hi sorry to see you where all so sick! I can relate to that horrible feeling. I have left many a DNA deposit in the oceans and lakes that we have sail in. Lol. I have done childcare for over 30 years. One tip I can give you to help determine how close to the time is when your child is going to throw up is. Put you hand gently over there heart. You can feel the heart beat rise and than there mouth will start to salivate. When it starts to powered hard and fast that is when you put the buck or sink or toilet under them to throw up into. I found this works very well for infants as well. A cold compress on the back of the neck helps as well. Hope this help out in determining when Sierra is just about ready to throw up. And save you some cleaning time. I have been watching your videos every Friday for years. Thanks so much for all the work you putting into these videos through thick and thin for us to watch!!
No no no! Hit the wrong button twice! It’s always a huge like to you guys! No suggestions about seasickness. I am the king of that, even while surfing I get seasick. Once I sailed on a catamaran from Salvador to the island of Morro de São Paulo, Bahia, Brazil, time we arrived I passed out then woke up at the local hospital. I had nothing inside to throw up, felt like my stomach would come out instead! I was the main attraction of the island for few days. Every one was surprised I had survived. 😂 Thanks for the episode! Wish you guys the best! Gotta stop in Rio some point, ahn?! Cheers
I lived in Maldives when I was a kid(my parents worked there) back in early 2000s. You had to be on a boat for 1-2 days on a boat to get from the airport to your Island back in the days. The smell of burnt diesel, sea and the feeling of puking out my groin... Aah childhood! R.I.P dad, passed away 7 months ago today, took me around the world and inspired me to go out into the world
That feeling of knowing, there is no escaping those conditions for the next hours and just realizing there is not too much you can do about it really sticks with you once you experienced it. But that spot looks amazing
yep. and sitting in the cockpit staring at the horizon until you cannot hold your pee any longer and know you have to go below... I've never been out when it got dark, I'd probably lose my mind.
We sail as a family with four kids. I have an easy access snack area where they can get something they fancy to nibble on anytime, this consists of dried fruit, nuts, crackers, Crisps, oat cakes and cereal bars plus fresh fruit. Fizzy water also helps a lot but only a little of that and food at a time. We do use kids motion sickness tablets on the first day of a long voyage if it’s going to be an uncomfortable sea. I try and use a homeopathic motion sickness tablet first and sometimes that’s enough to take the edge off. My kids love a place to wedge into when its rough and all have their favourite place or corner. We let them stay up when they want on passage which helps as then they sleep some of the day, having shorter bouts of woken time seems to help too. I also keep a pile of towels ready to grab if all else fails. Happy sailing xxx.
Sea sick once also but only when stationary in big swells. I feel you pain a tiny bit what you all went through is a million times worst. Glad your all feeling better, big thank you for continually showing us are beautiful planet. We just need to keep it that way. Best wishes from 🇬🇧. Think of all those in Ukraine 🇺🇦 please.
Sea sick twice. Once bouncing around upside down in diesel engine space and once in Gulf Stream. Phenergan suppositories worked well both times. Rx - probably not for 2YO's - possible side effects include hallucinations. I seem to recall hearing about a single-hander who stepped off his boat in mid-ocean after taking it. Not sure how that would have been known.
Happy anniversary! I just love your channel! Thank you for being so honest. Take it from an old seadog, what has worked for me for over 30 years, is fresh ginger. Grind up a piece and draw in boiling water. If you have a lemon add some juice and then add a bit of honey. Overdose with it before leaving and then have it a few times a day in rough seas. But do not be tough and not take a seasick tablet BUT you have to start the day before you sail. Take it for a day or what into the sail and start take again before bad weather. You now need a few sails without getting sick to get your sea legs back. Good luck!
That's exactly why I live sailing through your cruising adventures. I get seasick just from looking the wrong way. Hope you all are feeling better and Happy Anniversary. Hello from the sunny state of Florida.
Oh yeah, I remember feeling like that. An feeling like it wud never end... The only thing that helped was doing exactly what you said"sitting on Deck getting air looking at the horizon trying to get everything balanced!" I will agree that the previous cold you all had gotten affected your inner ear balance... I'm glad your on the hook in a beautiful place.. An happy Anniversary guys!! An give nuggs a hug an kiss for us!! It's been a joy seeing her growing up an doing so very well at everything!! Thanks for sharing your lives with us ✌🏼💗😊❣️
I've suffered seasickness twice in my life and I would never wish it on anyone. This video definitely brings back memories of it. Hopefully you are all doing well now.
Oooo, I know feeling too well. Afraid your gonna die, then afraid you won't. Great seeing you all persevere through it, especially Sierra. Thank goodness for the short passage. High concern for Nugget getting dehydrated. Taking Meclizine at least 4 hours before weighing anchor and sleeping off the drowsiness has worked well for me. Thanks for showing the challenges of getting to those stunning anchorages. Happy Anniversary, and many more!
Yeah... even a bit under the weather will make sea sickness horrible. I'm like Brian, never ever get sea sick, but once was unfortunate enough to join a research vessel in the the North Sea with 5m swells just as I was getting over the flu and man did I feel horrible. Scopolamine patches did the trick for me back then, never been seasick after that day. The bad thing about a 2-3 day passage is that this is the exact time that you need to find your sea legs, so by the time you feel better you've arrived.
Guys, I've worked for years with a travel agency specialised in crossing the North Sea from the main land to the UK. I've heard many tips on how to avoid seasickness in those years. The one tip I still feel very confident with is blocking your inner ear. For right-handed people, you put an earplug or a pluck of cotton in your opposite ear. So stuff up your left ear. And for the left-handers, stuff your right ear. That way you trick your vestibular system. Would love you to try and confirm or bust this myth. Thanks for showing your vulnerable moment with us too 🙏🏻💜
When I was 12 my parents and sisters went to Europe for the summer. We visited my Dad's hometown in Germany by the North Sea. My parents wanted to visit a little island called Helga Land. We went by a fairly large boat, about 50 tourists and crew. The North Sea was very rough that day. All I can recall of the trip is that there was vomit every where and I was certain I would die before we hit land. The funny part was that there were only 2 people who were not sick. The captain and my Dad. They were having a laugh watching all of us suffering. Going back to the mainland was not a problem. The North Sea had calmed down. Sea sickness is no joke🤗🇨🇦
Hi guys, sorry about your sick sail. Friend used a 2 axsis swivel blade hanging basket for kid. Movement stayed central even if boat did other. Hope you never get that bad again. Happy sailing. 👌❤
poor Nuggs with thoes angry eyes at the barf. Still is the fourth most beautiful, cutest little girl in the world even then! ( My 3 girls of course occupy the first 3 positions) How about the #1 non-Bowman little girl....That's better eh? Love you guys....thanx again for the escape!
Was seasick for 8 hours once on a charter fishing boat off Monterey. It came on quickly and also passed quickly, I went from sick to well in like 15 minutes. It is one of the worst conditions, pure misery! I love the explanation that it's when your eyes and inner ear disagree about which way is up. The mind can't tolerate that and has to resolve it.
It reminds me of a short night nav we did from Martinique to Les Saintes on our charter Dufour 460 a few years ago... I was sick the whole night... total nightmare... It was also the first day of sailing in a long time, I was super jet lagged having just flown from Asia with little sleep,...
Here is something to try. The stove stays stationary because of the pivot points. Make a little bed for Sierra on top of it. At least she could get a little relief from the rocking
I know im nobody but ive watched every video from the beginning. If and when brady arrives you should do a man show. 1 showing everything that is still original gear from when you first set sail together if anyhting... towels clothe sails swim gear masts engines blocks heads pumps anything that held the test of time on your boat idk might be just your sink lol. 2 What you miss about being together. old adventure stories. it would be awesome to see you two dive the galapagos again together. 3 Explain future plans of sailing and explain where each sees another in 10 years. :) just some ideas of course.
With nausea mom always put a cool wet rag on our throat while we were laying down and it always helped some and keep wetting it with cooler when it gets warm.
Great video! I loved everything about it except that you guys suffered so much. I was part of a tourist fishing excursion in Dominican Republic with 5 others. It was horrible. I was barely hanging on until the guy beside me broke out with three shots of "projectile vomiting". None of us thought we were going to make it back. Even the staff on the fishing vessel were sick, including captain zigzag. Happy Anniversary! You guys are weathered veteran sailors! For your anniversary... 🌹🌹🌹👏🏻 ❤️
Transderm Scop patch- greatest thing ever for motion sickness. Put on before you leave port and your good for 3 days in ANY conditions. Put a small piece of waterproof tape over the patch and you can swim and dive with out it coming off. You may get “dry mouth” but no other issues.
When I was 12 we visited my aunt in Panama. She took us out to the San Blas Islands. The plane flight there was great. The motor boat ride around to various islands made me sick. Perhaps that place has bad mojo. lol Happy Anniversary guys.
Glad you all survived, have been seasick, always hurts that what's making you sick doesn't stop because you're sick. Looks like it was worth it. Beautiful place to anchor.
My aunt is Swedish she sailed the length of east coast US , and Bahamas in 70s, ( also drove length of Africa in Land Rover) On sea sickness she said it is a good way to lose weight, and after a few days you feel fine.
That reminds me of a trip on the baltic sea, where I got a hell of seasick. We had 7 bf on the beam, but an old swell or 2,5m against the wind. The feeling was like in a washing mashine. After throwing up my lunch I was saved by warm clothes, salty snacks, hot tea, taking the helm and cinacerin. Love from Germany
When I was a young boy my Dad would take my two brothers and I Salmon fishing on Westport charters. After clearing the breakwater the westerly swells would be at 15 feet. Being sea sick was just part of the experience. But I stumbled on a cure soda any carbonated beverage would make you burp so I would feel sick run the side to barf instead I burped that feeling would relieve sickness in an instant. Do that a few times and the sickness is gone. Happy sails.
I know what you are talking about. I had motion sickness while flying a glider plane as the pilot, very hard to do it in that state knowing that you have to go another 100 miles to home in that state. Its still amazing how you can be puking family and still be pretty entertaining, keep up the great work.
Your daughter eating whatever that was from the jar with a spoon is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. If I had been drinking anything when she pointed at her mouth my monitor would have worn it. Thank you for the videos.
Hi Delos crew, I work on a fishing trawler up in the arctic and every time I get on I get sea sick. Well my second mate gave me some good advice that really helped me and hopefully it helps your little one. Make some toast with lots of mustard, good luck and safe travels
I've felt "squishy" twice. The worst was a day when most of the crew were sick and just watching them be sick made me me feel funky. As soon as we cleared the jetty coming into Galveston everyone felt better and we got to witness a partial eclipse as the sun was going down. Quite the memorable trip. LOL.
Hi guys - do a search on the inet on sinus and ear clearing - massage and tapping - it helps a lot with sea sickness. Do it regularly and not only when you are seasick. It has helped many other sailors. Once you have mastered it (very easy) you can regularly apply it to Nugget. Worth trying I think, espescially for the little one. Cheers
That was hard to watch with all of you sick especially the little Nugget. Before Brian said y'all caught some kind of bug I figured it had to be a combination of something not just sea sickness for all of you to get it the same time. Just glad you made it ok. Happy Anniversary you two.
This episode made me smile. Had a similar experience off the coast of Oregon, USA. Was coming down the cost from Washington to California and ran into an issue which required us to pull into port for a fix. The bar for the Columbia was closed, and the next closest location was Tillamook. We got to the entrance and was told (Coast Guard) to heave to for a bit until they open the bar. Heave to means wait around until the let you cross the bar into the entrance. So, that is what we did. What we did not know what it would turn into an 8 hour session. So, yes, everyone eventually got seasick. I had my oldest on board at the time, who was about 8 or so. She kept track of how many times everyone puked. So you have that to look forward to.... Nothing you can do but get through it. I wish there was a magic pill, but there is not.
I can't say that I've ever had much of a problem with seasickness, but I was on the water before I breathed air. I'm sure that has something to do with it. Your conditions look like a busy weekend on Lake Saint Clair. I spend most of my time standing propped in a corner and letting the boat roll under me. I also like ginger ale. My experiences probably won't work for all, but the more time on your feet with being able to see the horizon the better. The cabin is killer. Wish you all the best.
First - Happy Anniversary! Given your prowess and intuition & experience...I'm a little surprised you took the journey at the time... You have ALWAYS had it under control... Maybe it was the remnants of the bugs you all caught. If any sailing fam is capable, it's you & Kazza....
Im rearly seasick but if I get close to it: Chopped pieces of fresh ginger in warm (not boiling) water and hard tack (knäckebröd) does the trick. Also as others have said: steering the boat manually helps a lot!
Oh my...when I was in school, I worked summers on my dad's fishing boat. First trip, I would be ill for three days every summer. Still had to work. Fish guts...hehehe. Anyway, hell of a way to spend a cruise. Sorry for the little nugget. The wrist bands seem to work for me, at least in moderate seas. Don't know of they come in Nugget size. Bonine for the grownups. That'll teach ya not to spend so much time on the hook. Hahaha! 😉 Best to you on your anniversary! Thanks for bringing us along!
I have never been seasick, not even on a sixty foot dragger in heavy seas, but I think if I was on the water and already sick that would probably be bad. Dad and Grandpa and I just don't seem to get seasick, could be the navy and the merchant marine and the seawater in our veins, not sure. Sorry you went through this though! I think if I have a touch of a stomach bug or something hasn't agreed with me I will make a personal note to stay off the water. Happy Anniversary!
Our almost 3 year old used to get sick on our J boat and now on our Outremer. Dramamine for kids works 100% for her. Half of a tablet an hour before taking off and she's good to go. She's big into sticker books so that keeps her busy when under way. Sometimes Cocomelon story time (spotify) in a bean bag in the cockpit with a bowl of saltines or goldfish help to keep morale high! Things have gotten good enough at this point that she'll read books in her forward cabin at 10 knots going uphill!
In my experience, laying down is a mistake unless you can sleep. I try to stand in the wind somewhere I can see the horizon, but where I also have some vertical part of the boat (such as the shrouds) in my line of sight. My working theory is that by giving my brain as much feedback as possible about the motion my body is experiencing, I eventually convince it I didn't eat something poisonous; the world really is flopping around in improbable ways.
Love and miss u mates .. Aye on the Bilge and the smell of diesel fuel and other things. Abby and Joshie say hi to lil nugget and Delos family. ❤ St. Augie mates.. on the sea sickness eating little bits at a time was golden. It Helps. Have taken Meclizine, Brian after a diving trip ..was so sick on the way Back the way back in.. was so rolley .. cogrants 3 years already .. .. so love u mates
Bravo Karen👏👏👏 taking care of a toddler while seeseasick and having the strength to record it for the videos is something else!

Nothing better than Delos Fridays! Fair winds and following seas to the three of you!
I find steering the boat manually (no autopilot) causes me to focus more on the horizon and what's going on outside my body and helps reduce the feeling of sickness and always gets me out of my "misery zone" :)
Yeah man you are right! If you can manage the mental strength to make your body perform of course :)
Ah the puke chain. The ongoing puking of everyone else is the only thing, so far, that can get me sea-nauseous.
Exactly what the crusty old Aussie who taught me to sail had me do the first time I got seasick. Worked a treat.
Take the wheel as soon as you feel that seasickness is starting to come. It helped my first wife. Do not wait until seasickness has fully subsided. Then she steered until she was so tired that she could fall asleep if it was quick to get to the bunk.

Oh wow I really liked that music transition with Ramukanji after the intro!
Pretty good edit on that one right? Kiril continues to bless us with his talents :)
@@svdelos Kiril is a talented individual. I hope to see him on the Delos again.
I feel seasick just watching you. Poor Nugget, she's really a trooper.

Sierra starting to become more vocal. Your peace is nearly over, guys. Make the most of it.
Live this video, especially the old footage and editing… really cool to see those old clips!

Loved to see some of the old crew.
Would love to see them all together on the boat again. Liz, Brady, Blue etc etc
12:45 I have noticed that the best thing is to steer the boat - this way you get to both see the horizon and feel the swell in your fingertips

Hi fellow barfers, pails are for bailing frantically, doubled up paper bags are best for used food. Use it once and toss it over the side (carefully).

Hey hey hey.
I hope you are feeling better.
Brian.
Everyone has down days.
Get up.
Rock on.
I've suffered seasickness twice in my life and I would never wish it on anyone. This video definitely brings back memories of it. Hopefully you are all doing well now.

I can confirm; this has always worked with the travel-sickness of our 3 boys, when driving winding roads.

@@janicelemieux2578 seasickness ain't no joke at all. So true. And the North Sea can be a huge ass sometimes. Thanks for sharing🙏🏻😁
Sierra is going to take over this channel! That moment at 2:34 when you can see the adult appear for a second.
Hi guys, sorry about your sick sail. Friend used a 2 axsis swivel blade hanging basket for kid. Movement stayed central even if boat did other. Hope you never get that bad again. Happy sailing. 👌❤
Happy Anniversary! Hugs to Sierra.
Thank you! Sierra sends hugs back :)
Happy anniversary!! Three years ------- May you have many more beautiful and wonderful years together. --
Brian first time to see you that sick, !
This passage will always be one to remember! You made it and made it safely. That’s success
poor Nuggs with thoes angry eyes at the barf. Still is the fourth most beautiful, cutest little girl in the world even then! ( My 3 girls of course occupy the first 3 positions) How about the #1 non-Bowman little girl....That's better eh? Love you guys....thanx again for the escape!
NOTHING hits better than a Delos Friday Video -- Cheers!
Thanks for posting and sharing. Rough passage! Glad to see and hear that you're in the San Blas.
It reminds me of a short night nav we did from Martinique to Les Saintes on our charter Dufour 460 a few years ago... I was sick the whole night... total nightmare... It was also the first day of sailing in a long time, I was super jet lagged having just flown from Asia with little sleep,...
I’m so sorry you all were so sick but so glad you landed in paradise!
Wow…what a cruise. I really felt for you. Especially the Nugs. She’s a trooper, for sure. Love you guys. Stay safe! ❤️
Happy Anniversary...Sierra's sea legs are so impressive. So many times in the videos her facial expressions are soooo Grandpa!!!
I had sea sickness once onboard the USS danger RANGER CV-61 when we left Japan and was in middle of a typhoon it was like that v8 commerical.
With nausea mom always put a cool wet rag on our throat while we were laying down and it always helped some and keep wetting it with cooler when it gets warm.
I am so happy to see you show this reality of being at sea/sometimes
Unfortunately kids can’t use patch
The best thing about UA-cam is that I can't smell it. It's the online sailing life for me.
Happy anniversary guys .
Even in the worst conditions you are very presentable . Always nice to see your videos . Thanks
Thank you for the videos.
oh dear delos, just watching this makes me SS... you guys are awesome!!!
Brian I’m with ya bro, never had sea sickness but I know one day maybe, not looking forward to it, glad your all got through it stay safe.
1)eat 2 tubs of YOGURT & 1 tub of JELL-O.
2)SPIN VIGOROUSLY FOR 44 SECONDS
3)CLEAN-UP SEA SICKNESS MESS
Hi Delos crew, I work on a fishing trawler up in the arctic and every time I get on I get sea sick. Well my second mate gave me some good advice that really helped me and hopefully it helps your little one. Make some toast with lots of mustard, good luck and safe travels
I've felt "squishy" twice. The worst was a day when most of the crew were sick and just watching them be sick made me me feel funky. As soon as we cleared the jetty coming into Galveston everyone felt better and we got to witness a partial eclipse as the sun was going down. Quite the memorable trip. LOL.
Brought back childhood memories salmon fishing in giant swell off La Push chumming my guts out over the side! You guys are rock stars!
Im rearly seasick but if I get close to it:
Chopped pieces of fresh ginger in warm (not boiling) water and hard tack (knäckebröd) does the trick.
Phenomenal episode y’all. Sorry it was a rough one!
Congrats on the 3 years….take care nugget
Welcome to the baltic sea here it's all the time like that. Waves coming from everywhere..
As the sea sick Champion of the World, I take no joy in your motion sickness, as I sit here watching it in my rock solid Lazy Boy chair..
Well..the good part is the outtakes of the baby nugs are hilarious...
Kiril killing it with the edits. Another great one.!
I have never seen swells like you have but a cold beer tends to assist me
Nice to see Lisa!
Happy Anniversary and get to feeling better soon
*Captain Breeyawwwwn is DOWNNNNN!* .... Like Jimmy from Seinfeld!! ... remember that episode??
lol that anchor drops perfect!
Can’t believe I’ve been following since episode 11. You guys have come so far! Cheers!
You both are beautiful'!!! Love watching from the east coast of Canada! Thank you
