  • African-inspired prints are getting a modern makeover. Ankara, a fabric from West Africa, isn't just considered cultural attire anymore - it's taking the spotlight on catwalks and red carpets across the world. Onyii Brown, a Nigerian-born designer from Houston, has always admired the bold, bright colors of Ankara. She first started her brand, Onyii & Co., in her garage, turning vibrant African prints into figure-flattering wrap dresses, skirts, and jumpsuits. Since then, she has shown her colorful styles at New York Fashion Week and even received recognition from Martha Stewart. Hi I am South African and we have a lot of similar prints also used in special ceremonies. I had a Zulu friend working for me and she looked so elegant in these traditional clothes.
I used to wear a lot of the swe-swe fabric.
In East London, a city on the south east coast there is a factory that has been in production for ages.
The Dutch who are my forefathers arrived in 1652 and we have many of there ideas and crafts to this day.
Many black ladies have built up very good businesses with these fabrics.
At weddings the bride needs a few outfits to change in because the ceremony goes on for days.
I live in the UK now and miss the colour and bold patterns.
    Keep up the good work.

I think Ankara Fabric is beautiful!! ❤ Do you think people that aren't from Africa can wear it? Not the tribal or cultural prints of course but prints without meaning

Absolutely, you may wear it. In fact, many Africans will appreciate your appreciation for ankara. Thank you for asking and being cognizant of the importance of knowing that certain prints have meaning.
