I never enjoyed Rebels and Patriots when we played it, we ended up modding it so much it became a new game! Men Who Would Be Kings are fun but as you say brutal. They have issues but less in my mind! We tried. The new Osprey With Hot Lead and Cold Steel ACW rules last week and they w ere pretty fun, we’ll definitely be trying them again. Seems like the Confeds vs Feds would be more even than the Victorian colonial wars, which were pretty much a slaughter fest for just one side, that being the poor brown people of the world at that time. I've tried some other rule sets of colonial rules, not that fun for either side actually. Perry definitely has gatlings and other colonial weapons specific to the era. American western plains war might work nicely with MwhowdbeKing for some medium large skirmish games and you could use your Union figures. Brigade Games have some gorgeous Native American figures if that's of interest. Hugs.

Sounds like you're ready to make your own rules. I think over time, all us wargamers do. No need to follow anyone's rules but your own. It's always good to see how others play but ultimately, I think you should just make your own. All the cools kids are doing it. ;) Either way, can't wait to see the battles! Keep it WEIRD.
I'm sure I'm heading in that direction. For the time being, I guess I'm just doing research enjoying all of these different rule sets. I will try and keep it as Weird as possible!

I have played both. Good mechanic's and fun games. I prefer Sharpe and really enjoyed the Sharp update rules (from the Lairdies Annual magazine) for Sudan. Having two “volleys” per firing action gives big loss/shock gives a good flow to breechloading rifle (i.e. Martini-Henery, Chassepot) Have used the spirt of the update ideas for a Sino-French War mini campaign I have been doing. Really look forward to these videos!

Rebels and men who be kings two of my favoutite games in the Rampnt series of games. TMWWBK can be very bloody if you're a native.

These are my favorite sets of rules for 18th-19th cen. warfare. There is a user made supplement for R&P to do Napoleonic type warfare.
