  • In this video I go into detail on how the turbo system on my JDL 86 is set up. I explain line routing, plumbing, little details to take care of before introducing boost, tuning options and more! I talk about Blow off valve (BOV) line routing, oil and coolant lines, wastegate, vacuum line clamps, STI PCV valve installation washer fluid tank delete and a little bit about supporting mods. I go over how to spec out the kit online from JDL and what all the options mean. Thanks for watching and leave a comment with anything else you want to know about the turbo setup, or if you want to add anything I may have missed!
    Products I used:
    Turbo kit - JDL Auto Design
    STI PCV valve - part number 11810AA040 (available on amazon)
    ECUTEK - ECU Connect Bluetooth programming kit (available on amazon)
    Turbo Blanket - Design Engineering 010140 T3 Titanium Turbo Shield

    Love the video brother! I have a Jackson Racing C38 Supercharger 86 myself. Regardless, the detail you spent going over everything is what we really need nowadays with these cars. So many people are nervous to boost their cars but if you do everything properly and get all the proper components you need to support which FI route you go, you have almost 0 to no issues with the car.

    I did some stuff a little differently, I got the JDLv2 kit, I did also rebuild my motor. I’m running the dual radium catch cans and it didn’t occur to me about the sti pcv valve. My passenger side pcv wasn’t doing anything for the first about 3k miles then I took it out and made sure it wasn’t sticking. Now I finally have stuff coming through it. Fortunately Ive changed my oil enough times not to be concerned (I think) I changed it around 1500 miles, and a few times before that (because break in procedures for the new internals) so hopefully nothing got messed up from my oil being diluted. The passenger side pcv does produce significantly less than the drivers side from what I’ve noticed. I have to empty mine roughly every 500 miles it’s more than half full by then. (My ring gap is pretty big for future purposes) Also with the dual radium catch cans, I ran each line to each pcv, and then the other line I T’d together from each catch can, and then I ran it to the filter pipe on the turbo since that side creates a vacuum all the time so in theory it should be pulling from the catch can. Worst case scenario of my catch cans getting full is my turbo should get the extra blowby running through it lol

    • @Macurry98
      @Macurry98 4 місяці тому

      You could opt for the oil air seperator so that you dont have to touch the catch cans every 500 miles id find that a pain but it is what it is i guess 😅

      I use a couple different ones. It’s the same size as stock though, it sits a little higher than normal because of the oil cooler sandwich plate. I get filters through work so I change brands depending on what we have.

    Awesome build, quick question how does the turbo feel? Well ofcourse more power feels nice but how does it feel it terms of balance? Did you have to adjust yourself to it?

    • @henrynewgent8481
      @henrynewgent8481  9 місяців тому +1

      I’m not sure what you mean by adjust it, but the turbo feels great. The 2860 is very responsive and it pulls all the way to red line. I can feel the power increase in the low rpm’s as well. A lot of that is thanks to a great tune by CSG

    I would argue the greddy kit is better for 4 maybe 5 reasons 1: JDL doesn't port the header since they use smaller pipes to pressure the turbo more, that causes disturbance when the exhaust is trying to exit. 2: The greddy kit doesnt require you to remove the window washer bottle. 3: if you want a UEL sound JDL does make the header for the greddy kit but you must port it to maximize the turbo. 4: If you want a BOV its as simple as a quick ad on kit otherwise you get a cool flutter. The only better side i do like is Jdl Offers an AN oil return line and oil pan but this can be added to the greddy kit to make it even better.

    • @henrynewgent8481
      @henrynewgent8481  22 дні тому

    Let me if i understood, you blocked where the BOV supposed to be in to get the "chu chu" noises from the turbo? Like how HKS do?

    • @henrynewgent8481
      @henrynewgent8481  10 місяців тому +1

      Basically. The HKS kit does not come with a blow off valve, but jdl does. Because I wanted the flutter noise, and the car to maintain a little more boost pressure while shifting, I removed the blow off valve and blocked the port in the piping where it is normally located.

    • @henrynewgent8481

      I would DEFINITELY get an oil cooler. The catch can is also something to look into but not quite as important as the oil cooler. The stock clutch will start to give out over 300hp but it should be good for a bit. Oil pressure will need a separate oil pressure sensor since the stock one is a switch

    You mentioned that the HKS turbo kit is too big for the car. The reason for that is that HKS offers three different turbo sizes in Japan for this car. Unfortunately, all of the American retailers just buy the largest one (GTIII-RS Kit) that maxes out at 450hp. HKS themselves say that they do not suggest this kit for any kind of street driving, and for moderate power while keeping it responsive, go with the GT4135 kit.

    • @henrynewgent8481
      @henrynewgent8481  2 місяці тому

      Yeah this all correct. There was a few smaller things I didn’t like about the hks kit as well. Some American retailers used to have the smaller ones available but seem to have stopped carrying them

    • @haifai3916
      @haifai3916 2 місяці тому

      @@henrynewgent8481 Makes sense. I prefer the HKS kit due to its intrinsic compatibility with the HKS oil cooler and the out of the box compatibility with the Defi oil pressure sensor. The HKS kit also includes heat shields so it doesn’t melt your fan shroud and heat tape for the wires. (I’m also a whore for JDM parts) To each his own.

    • @henrynewgent8481
      @henrynewgent8481  2 місяці тому

      @@haifai3916 I wish the hks stuff for this car made more sense. I love hks as a company. I just usually find that there is something better for the same money on these cars. The hks kit only has equal length headers, I didn’t want to run the hks oil cooler, didn’t want internal waste gate, and it doesn’t come with a blow off valve (I’m not using one but the jdl kit did come with it). It also doesn’t come optioned with the needed MAP sensor, and I don’t believe they have a bolt on pre welded oil pan available either. I appreciated how the jdl kit was pretty much a one stop shop and the turbo can be easily swapped for different sizes. I’m hoping to use more hks stuff on my s13 build

    • @henrynewgent8481

      For a setup like this none of that is necessary. Most drivetrain components can hold up to 400hp for street use (with the exception of the clutch) the transmission, diff, axles etc are quite fine with a stock motor setup. The brakes are good with just an upgraded pad and rotor swap
