I installed a mod where someone put Rambo as a Specialist, and my base game campaign ended with my Rambo operator having almost the same medals mentioned in Rambo First Blood Part II. Two silver stars, four bronze, Distinguished Service Cross and the Medal of Honor. Only didn’t have the Purple Hearts as I didn’t get shot. It was neat to see.

The original Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six game (the one from 98’) is also great and was ahead of it’s time. I remember playing it as a kid. I remember my first exposure to flashbangs was through that game, I not knowing what a flashbang was threw one at the front door of the first mission and expected it to blow up the door and instead I got blinded and as I began to regain my vision a enemy with a shotgun opened the door and killed me and I screeched so loud. This is still my favorite Ghost Recon game.
It’s as hardcore as classic Rainbow Six, but since I can quicksave, it’s much easier to learn as when I inevitably die, I only have to redo the last few seconds rather than the whole mission.
Also, there is a mod that lets you show your gun model, but it is a bit finnicky.
EDIT: Also, small correction: The yellow part of the threat indicator isn’t friendlies, it’s pointing towards where enemies are if they’re not close by. When it turns red, it means enemies are close. It’s simply a way for you to know where enemies are, a gamified way of showing data from satellite imagery, through the wall sensors, motion trackers and the like.

I would love a modern game that kept the pacing and feel of these early Ghost Recon games. A modern Hidden & Dangerous game would be similarly awesome. I'd also love Rainbow Six to remember it's a tactical co-op game, not a fast TTK Overwatch spinoff... but Siege sold so well I have limited hopes for that franchise to return to its roots. Basically, if somebody programmed better AI and added missions/ scenarios in the Tarkov engine, that'd be a blast.

6:24 The yellow is not friendlies, it is pointing to the bad guys afar. It helped a lot to find the last enemies on a map or to make sure that a section of the map was clear. And the central disk is red when an enemy is close, but it obviously do not indicate the direction.

You also have to remember the quality of the monitors/TV was no where like it is today. Back then you would have the quality of a CRT and you can see the small dots where it would determine the colors. This made it harder to see the enemy and would mesh the textures together. In some cases gave you uncertainty in some situations in the game.
During multiplayer there were sniper vs sniper scenarios where you couldn't tell if there was an enemy in the dirt/tree/rock/pillow that was just out of visual range so you could barely see anything. You could not guess and take a shot at something you weren't sure of otherwise you would surely be shot by the opposing sniper. Todays R6 games are arcade compared to these older games. I mean go look at Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear for instance, the trailer/intro is awesome.

The OG tactical shooter. This, alongwith Rainbow Six is what defined the Tactical Shooter/TacticalFPS genre. I remember how I was once visiting another city and stumbled upon a small CD/DVD store. I went in and bought a CD that had a compedium of the first 3 GR games in it. At that point I did not know what it was. But playing it was an experience in itself. To this day I absoloutely love it and refuse to believe anything beyond Ghost Recon: Phantoms is a Ghost Recon game.
Here's a recommendation, try the Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed MOD. It's even more hardcore than the vanilla game.

You should see if you can get the PC version of Advanced Warfighter working from 2006. I a lot of people skipped over it for the console version, but the PC version was developed by a totally different studio and was more like the OG game than any other game after. I beat it in co-op with a friend and we went into it without expecting much and ended up feeling like the PC version was an underrated gem.
I'm not sure where you can even get it anymore or if it even works on windows 10, but it'd be worth seeing if you can do co-op. It would make for good content.

I love Ghost Recon, I still have the original CD. There are so many mods available and these can in turn be easily tuned. I clearly remember a mission map with 100 hidden snipers . Extremely hard until you started to remember their positions. Downsides were that silenced weapons meant nothing, AI would just come towards your position regardless. AI would also sometimes not react to their comrade dying right next to them. Also, with multiple mods, you would usually have to modify config files because of the way weapon slots worked or you wouldn't see all the available guns. Oh, Minigun with each projectile having the same effect as tank shells anyone?

I got this from a great friend years ago and I used to play multiplayer with my little bro. From dual stealth missions to personal grudge matches the game was a strange transition in gaming from old tank control run and gun games to adding new stealth elements based on visibility and sound. The only other games like that were stuff like Thief and Counter-Strike. The old Ghost Recon maps were fucking huge for the time and you really could disappear for hours and not see who you were playing with. And you had a split screen and the resolution was like 244p. Imagine shooting at ants.
